Me too. So many great lines in this. I just love the internal rhyme in "Romeo? Oh you know, I used to have a scene with him." And this line always made me smile: "All I do is miss you, and the way we used to be, All I do is keep the beat, and bad company." I don't know if that expression (to "keep bad company" - to hang out with the "wrong crowd" so to speak) is common anymore but I just like how the word "keep" is kept away from the "bad company" so that even though he's saying yes he is keeping bad company, he's being subtle about it. He misses her.... (and oh yeah by the way he's out there having a good time...) Finally, there is an Indigo Girls version this song that is quite good and makes clear what the actual tune is. (Don't get me wrong, I like Mark's vocals too but once I heard the Indigo Girls version, I could sing along with Mark in the car way better than before!)

Nice job! Keep up this journey... had me cracking up with the "mellow" reference... Just wait... I'm looking forward to it. My Dire Straits story... It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 PM... A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won 2 tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's Brothers in Arms tour show (1986) at the Boston Garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no he looks at me and says would you want to go? I respond in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day... we picked up the tickets at the door... I couldn't believe it they were sixth row Center on the floor I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second Encore song, it was really a very well-done show I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

Love this song, Daniel! Glad you checked it out. Other tracks to react to on this album are Expresso Love, Skateaway, and Tunnel of Love. Also, check out tracks from the underappreciated Love Over Gold album - Industrial Disease and Telegraph Road are awesome, and the production on that album was beautifully done. Knopfler's fingerstyle guitar playing is pretty unique in rock music. Offhand, Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac is the only other major player that I can think of that uses this style.

LOVE Telegraph Road. I can't help but compare it to JC Mellencamp's brilliant Rain on the scarecrow. Basically, an English version of same sentiments.
@SilverBoxStudios
@SilverBoxStudios 3 года назад
@@craigcoleman967 As great and impactful Rain on the Scarecrow is, it's primarily aimed at the struggle of the farmer in this country with strong words and visuals in the music video to support it. As where Telegraph Road can be any rundown city or town that time has moved on from. Its emotion is driven by the music being played and you supply your own images from your personal experiences making it, in my opinion, a far more personal song to the listener.
@craigcoleman967
@craigcoleman967 3 года назад
@@SilverBoxStudios I love both songs and they're obviously very different stories but a lot of sentiments are mirrored. For me it screams, "how could something that started with so much promise be allowed to decay to this?". Whether it's the farms of the US mid-west, the coal mines of England's north or any other frontier, they are both stark accounts of our ability to rape and plunder for our own greedy needs then to cut and run and move on to the next goldmine. I find them both very personal accounts. I don't have a farming background but I feel the pain in JCM's words.

A story about misunderstanding the song "Money for Nothing". I'm from a family with 11 children. My sister told me that for the longest time she thought Sting was singing "I want my own TV" (He sings "I want my M-T-V"). Someone could have written a song about us called "I want my own chair." I'd advise against reacting off music videos, not just because they're distracting (and often plain awful), but they also often use radio edits (not the case here but that was probably luck rather than design), so just a heads up. Anyway, Tunnel of Love from the same album (Making Movies) is a must from these guys - actually the whole album bar the awful closer (Les Boys), also Telegraph Road from the follow-up is the definition of epic, most will tell you to do the Alchemy Live version of that one, but studio or live it's great either way (unlike Money For Nothing, which I never need to hear again, so please don't react to that...I beg you...hahaha!).

Knopfler's two other most played songs are Brother's in Arms and Piper To The End. The later was written to commemorate is uncle a British Piper who died in the D-Day invasion. If you've liked Sultan's and Romeo and Juliet it's hard to see you disliking these two. Mark has written dozens maybe hundreds of songs and someday he may write a bad one but not yet. Skate away might be my favorite song from them. The bittersweet fade out guitar on this song is my favorite part. Knopflers solo work is beautiful and relaxing. Great Sunday AM music. Try My Shangrila.

Knopfler’s guitar work is so excellent! He can rock out, as in the live “Sultans of Swing” or soft and downright pretty! Very underrated!

If you've ever experienced a relationship that went from great to terrible and back and forth, of course ending badly, this song tears your heart out all over again.

Talking about Romeo's you may want to check out Thin Lizzy's track Romeo And The Lonely Girl - a gorgeous song that will introduce you to the world of Phil Lynott and the best hard rock band ever. Dig deep. It will be worth it.

There are lots of classic and amazing DS songs to check out, but my favourite has to be a B-Side, called "Badges, Posters, Stickers and T-Shirts" ... See if you can find it ...

I love the dobro guitar he uses for his guitar sound.

Telegraph Road is an epic story and the lyrics are very sophisticated. It is a bit long but worth the wait. This video doesn't help really, better to just listen to the song.

A personal favorite of many is "Tunnel of Love". The last third of the song is an extended crescendo-ing Knopfler guitar solo that moved someone to observe "Knopfler doesn't play guitar solos. He writes stories".

Their best live performance is either Telegraph road or sultans of swing from the Alchemy concert
