@@grokur9714 yes and then by the time you get to his solo stuff you marvel even more because a very large portion of those are just wonderful also. the writings, the melodies, the genuine emotion is his voice and then his super emotional very skillful guitar pours it's heart out for you. i love golden heart! another pure love song. the man can sure write them so i love the work and career of mark knopfler...a giant in my book. he also surrounds himself with many other truly gifted people so the whole package is fantastic....and doesn't grow old.........

Your reaction videos are perfect. You don't interrupt the song as others do and your analysis at the end is full of interest. This is one of my favourite Dire Straits songs and contains my favourite song line - "all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme". For me there is no other band in the world to match Dire Straits, and Mark Knopfler is beyond compare as a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter (also a truly nice and humble man). It is great to have the pleasure of hearing their music along with people who treat it with so much respect.

Sorry for the third post, but Mark knows film music. The song Somewhere from West Side Story features the line "there's a place for us" and West Side Story basically tells the Romeo and Juliet story from the view of two rival street gangs.

Wow, I'm surprised you guys hadn't heard this one before. I'm kinda jealous that you're hearing it for the first time. It's a stone-cold classic and probably my favourite Dire Straits song and certainly one of my favourite love songs. Production, musicianship, melody, vocals, lyrics... not a bum note to be found anywhere and the whole vibe of the song is just wonderful from beginning to end.

Always loved this one, and the way it distills the sort of flowery romantic language that you'd associate with the Shakespeare play that it's named after down to one of the simplest human expressions imaginable, namely 'You and me, babe...how about it?' - what I like to call tough-guy romanticism at it's finest, yes? (Reminds me of some of the softer Ramones tunes like 'Danny Says' and 'Baby I Love You' in some ways...).

It's the little things about Knopfler's songs that have always amazed me. (This includes his impressive solo albums as well.) This song, for example, keeps utilizing the song from West Side Story (Somewhere there's a place for us) as well as invoking the love song from the 1960s version of Romeo and Juliet (a time for us.) Given that West Side Story was basically Romeo and Juliet without Shakespearean language, you have a song inspired by two movies. (Tunnel of Love? That's the Carousel Waltz in the first few bars of that song.)

Yes! This is good! Sins you done the two great, “Sultans” and “Tunnel”, you should try the other two pure Strait songs, where the sound is SO Straits. Telegraph Road and Once upon a time in the west. You can really se Knopflers journey as a writer and guitar player along the line. Telegraph Road is simply the greatest song in the world 😊

If you want an emotional rollercoaster, perhaps some of Knopfler's angriest lyrics AND best guitar work, try "It Never Rains" (last song on the 'Love Over Gold' album). You come in expecting a nice little song, you come out shaken and dazed. One of my favorites.

Although I liked Dire Straits at the time, I didn't like this song first time I heard it, I heard it again a few years later and its one of my favourite songs of all time. Its a complete mystery to me why I didn't like it first time round.

Definitely my favorite song of theirs, and the album has a lot going for it, but It'd be my 3rd or 4th choice if I were to put on a DS album and listen to it straight through -- "Love Over Gold" would be first, then their self-titled first album, then either this one or Brothers in Arms depending on my mood.

I think this is a nice ballad and a well crafted song lyrically and musically. It features nice guitar work.Shawn , good point you made about the song's length but sounding like a shorter time span because of the quality of the song. Trey, I like your explanation of the lyrics. Nice reaction, the song grows on you but you can sense the quality. R+J is Shakespeare that most schoolchildren study and the ultimate star crossed lovers, so his lyrics are great in giving it a contemporary feeling that works. I suggest rather than listening to the studio versions you listen to the Alchemy live versions where many of the classics were played and have almost become definitive. The audience adds something. The other song that has taken a classical literary theme is Kate Bush and Withering Heights another British classic from a famous book. Tunnel of love is much better on Alchemy, but the most amazing song I think is Telegraph Road, which should strike a chord with Americans. The Alchemy version is just as good if not better.

Dire Straits live versions (as on Alchemy) are usually an 'extended' or expanded version of the studio album, sometimes substantially different. But they changed over time, too, so in discussing a 'live' version it's often necessary to say which performance is being referenced. The Alchemy album had some of the best live versions, IMO. Sultans of Swing, Tunnel of Love, R&J I think. But 'Going Home' (aka local Hero - Wild Theme) is a case in point - their 1993 live version (on the On The Night album) is so beautiful it leaves all other versions in the dust.

Stef that is a great one but you really need a good damn set of headphones to really enjoy it a lot of times it's so mellow and the beginning till Mark lays down a few good old licks on the Stratocaster a lot of people get lost in that cut.. cuz they're not really listening to the soft vocals that he's laying down. but you're right it is a damn good song from love over gold

There's no tempo changes. There are intensity changes. It's called dynamics. It's missing in most modern music. To slowly build a song, and many times bring it back down and build it up again. Leave the listener wanting....

why does it sound like a Bruce Springsteen song? 🎹🎹 E Street Roy Bittan on keys here damn look who produced this album along with Mark Knopfler? Springsteen Stevie Nicks Tom Petty and more legendary producer Jimmy iovine. Jimmy needed some keys and he knew exactly who to call so he called professor Roy. another reason why way back when I first started hooking up with you folks I said making movies has always been my favorite album still is.

@@ReactionsToTheClassics tell you one thing Shaun if you were addicted to MTV in the early yrs take a look at skateaway from Dire Straits it was an MTV favorite later a VH1 favorite it played all the time... everybody remembers the roller skating girl in the trucks in the taxis..

This album is basically frontloaded. Two great songs to start off. Other ones are still solid but not as good.
