If you think your reaction to Annie's androgynous fashion was strong today, just imagine the shocked reaction that largely ignorant America had in the 80s when this video came out. There were many who just did not know what to make of this band, and especially Annie's look. She freaked a lot of people out in the beginning, which was a shame because Eurythmics were very much ahead of their time in some ways. Their highly experimental approach really helped set the tone for the "anything goes" attitude of New Wave. And, MTV helped fuel this by being very permissive in its early years, by allowing a huge number of envelope-pushing videos to get out to the larger public. (Also a lot of crap, too, but that's a story for another day)

This song is written by two people Annie is saying: Look around you, at how f*cked up it all is. Everyone is working some game. No matter where you go in the world it's the same. This is as good as it gets. Dave is saying: Yeah, but this is as bad as it gets, so keep your head up, and when you're going through hell, keep going. The rest is just my interpretation Visuals breakdown: At the opening they are in the boardroom of a recording label, she is giving a presentation saying that from the highest heights to the madding crowd it is the same. It is about power dynamics, manipulation, and treating everyone as a means to an end. (Annie was depressed at the time of writing, feeling lost and despondent.) When they move to sit upon the table, with eyes closed they become nothing but their marketable characteristics: she her voice, he his playing. They may be trying to find their dreams and higher goals (bindi/third eye), and catching a vision of where they want to go, but it becomes a reticule, a sight to find more marketable talent. They are being used. Waking up from the dreams of her goals as her dream was killed (break up of the Tourists), she finds she's laying on the table like a feast with a cow circling the table. She's nothing but something to be sold, her dreams don't matter. As she wakes up to the reality, the facade of refinement is stripped away - we're all cattle.

Spot-on with the pronunciation of Eurythmics, it looks harder than it is :) They were the sound track to my youth (with a good number of others ofc) and i seen them live about 4 or 5 times, they were a very good live band too. Annie was very much okay hehehe, she was (and still is) an 80's icon and she and Dave had a lot of influence on the music industry at the time. (easily top 10 biggest bands of the 80's) Eurythmics sure made a string of badass hits and otherwise great songs, good beats, lyrics that can mean a number of things to different listeners. They approached music the classic way, like classic classic.. when writing music, they made compositions and turned that into pop music. (this is also why you get all these extra instruments across their songs) One tip, and this has nothing to do with Eurythmics, but all to do with the 80's themselves.... Dont try to figure out the meaning of 80's music videos.. most of them are just weird lol.

Dude! Annies voice is a sweet dream. I saw her in concert in Los Angeles at the Greek Theatre when this song was popular. Her voice is absolutely amazing. She is so powerful that her voice when she was doing that wailing sound was echoing off of the hills. That dot is the third eye which is your view from your soul and/or to the other world.

This song and video was the first time I had ever seen or heard of Annie Lennox. I had never seen a woman dressed as a man, with a crew cut and makeup. I thought she was one of the most beautiful women I'd ever laid eyes on despite the hair and clothes. I think I was 10.

Mr. Video, if you think you were shocked by what you watched and listened to in this music video, imagine how shocked I, and millions of viewers, were when we first watched this music video for the first time on MTV in January, 1983. It definitely shocked the hell out of me. I thought to myself, "Oh my God, this is Satan himself!!!" I loved the techno-pop music in this music video, and I became a big fan of the duo, and have bought all of their audiocassettes, CDs, and videocassettes/DVDs. Note: during all of their concerts, when Eurythmics performed "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)", they would always repeat the "Hold your head up" bridge segment to finish the song.

Oh man, I fell in love with her voice as soon as I heard the first line. She is brilliant and her duet with David Bowie (Under pressure) is legendary. Could be interesting for you: Dave Stewart was married to Siobhan Fahey. She was part of the band "The Shakespeare Sisters". They had some great songs like "Hello" and "Stay". Stunning women with great voices.

In a Eurythmics interview in “Rolling Stone” magazine in 1983, Dave Stewart revealed that he took extensive amounts of LSD in the early-1970s. Even though it influenced his creativity as a music artist, it gave him bad emotional feelings after taking it, and had to stop taking it.

I was in kindergarten around the time this and Michael Jackson's Thriller came out. I distinctly recall having seen Annie Lennox on TV performing this song, and when I first heard Beat It on the radio, I was convinced it was another song by Eurythmics. I pictured a short-haired white lady singing. Needless to say, I was surprised when I first learned who Michael Jackson was. Looking back, they don't sound alike at all, but to my five-year-old self, they were the same.

Keep your head up (don't give up). When they wrote this song they were on the brink of giving up. their first album "never ganna cry again" did do well. The previous band "the tourist" did not last long maybe 2yrs. Well the rest is music history.
