I've seen this loads of times but for some reason I burst into tears at the opening scene. Donald Sutherland's such a charismatic actor & his relationship with Kate Bush's character in this is incredibly touching. Wonderful track & video.

You will be blown away by the opening track 'Running up that Hill', a song about wishing to swap places with one's lover, in order to come to a deeper understanding of how we hurt one another. The video is also stunning. Side Two of tbe album is a seven piece epic called The Ninth Wave. This is an incredibly powerful thematic piece about being stranded in the sea, trying to stay awake in order to keep from drowning. The depths of the water below become a deep descent into the unconscious. The protagonist seems to have 'crossed over' and is going through a vivid, out of body experience, witnessing living loved ones but being unable to communicate. She then meets herself from the future as an old woman, who implores her not to die, because then the elder woman could not exist?!? The journey reaches an incredible climax and life-affirming resolution.A true masterpiece.. Please check it out on your own time or react to the seven parts if you can.

@@toddmathers5075 She also wanted the album to have two titles!! 'Hounds of Love' and 'The Ninth Wave'. But that is something they can't do because of album release cataloging. I'm of the "just the music" opinion. But...this video is among the exceptions. It follows the story of the song beautifully. And Donald Sutherland in it too? Very cool. Kate hung out with some cool folk. Like, Eric Idle of Monty Python too. Her word with Peter Gabriel was of course superb. And of course David Gilmour, without whom we might never have gotten to hear Kate Bush. He supported her early. And since we're naming names, for fun you could listen to "Why Should I Love You" from her album "The Red Shoes". On keys, guitar, bass, vocals...none other than Prince. Blessings.

That was the well-known actor Donald Sutherland (father of Kiefer) playing Wilhelm Reich (that's rye-ck). When I saw Kate Bush live in 2014 this was the second encore and last song of the night, and the whole audience was standing clpping alone with the beat and singing "Yeaheyeahyo..." with Kate conducting. A brilliant end to one of the best concerts I've ever seen (and I've seen them all, except the Beatles). Next time you react to her I suggest "This Woman's Work" next.

Big shout out to those who recommended this masterpiece, knew this would be a better choice for you after Wuthering Heights. I did smile, laugh and nod when you said "wow ... this is gonna turn into my favourite song by here, isn't it?" Now the divisive high pitched girl voice has now pleasingly been replaced by her richer tone of the mid 1980s to early 90s, matured like a fine red wine. You pleasingly picked up on the increasing layers of drumming as the song progress. Always a pleasure to hear this masterpiece again, alongside your enjoyable reaction and analysis. @Johro66
@Johro66 2 года назад
The song is about the very close relationship between psychologist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter, told from the point of view of the son. It describes the boy's memories of his life with Reich on their family farm, called Orgonon where the two spent time "cloudbusting", a rain-making process which involved pointing at the sky a machine designed and built by Reich, called a cloudbuster. The lyric further describes Wilhelm Reich's abrupt arrest and imprisonment, the pain of loss the young Peter felt, and his helplessness at being unable to protect his father. The song was inspired by Peter Reich's 1973 memoir, A Book of Dreams, which Kate read and found deeply moving.

The one song that needs its video is "Experiment IV". It was an early video and the song is meant to be experienced with the video. The second side of that album is a concept one, The Ninth Wave. Wilhelm Reich went crazy - but when? That depends on which of his theories you support. Check out his wikipedia page for more. As for "orgone". it is a form of energy that most people can't interact with as we have armoured ourselves against it. There are some people who follow his fringed science, but no one had actually made it work, I'm glad you kept with Kate Bush after being disappointed with your first encounter with her music. I hope you do that with Chris de Burgh as well.

Reich had crazy theories almost from the get go. I'm sure you've read his Wikipedia article. I don't see his orgone energy theories as particularly original. They're kind of an applied method for harnessing Chi energy or tantra. And, BTW, they do work, at least, in a physical sense. As I wrote above, my mom was one of Reich's young students (before he really went off the deep end, pushing his therapies as a cancer cure). She used to give me Reichian massage. Basically it's a kind of accupressure applied to the area in the vicinity of the spine It definitely worked for me at times, in the sense that it could producea powerful, energetic/tingling feeling of release + a kind of blissful/pleasurable feeling for a while and a definitely sense of relaxation, longer term.

Guessing no one will know or remember this bit of 90s trivia, but this shows how cool Kate Bush is :- The UK house/rave band Utah Saints had their biggest single (UK No 4) with the song 'Something Good' by sampling the chorus from this Kate Bush song. It became a 90s rave classic, as shown by the video having 4 million plus views: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ixMWhpg0iXU.html I remember the group saying they asked her permission for the sample, and she agreed. Utah Saints were apparently well happy that she liked their song ... and shows how awesome Kate Bush is, considering that their house music could not be more different from Kate Bush ! 😊

Can't imagine this song without the video for some reason, as that's how I was introduced to it a millennium ago on MTV. And, what's not to like. The concept for the video was conceived by Kate and Terry Gilliam of Monty Python fame and directed by Julian Doyle ("Brazil" "Time Bandits") and Donald Sutherland gives a great performance. For some reason I can't seem to watch this video without shedding a few tears, and, for me they're kind of personal. My mom was a student of Wilhelm Reich for a while in the early 1950s. Not only that, she used to sit in one of Reich's orgone energy accumulators while she was pregnant with me. It was this pyramidal shaped box. She used to tell me that she could only sit for a half hour or less because of all the energy she felt while inside. I've no idea if this box or any of Reich's other inventions were frauds or if he was onto something; I'll only say that I've always felt a sense of excess energy growing up and beyond. My mom also used to do these massages to my spine area when I was a little kid. I've no idea how they worked but I can attest to the fact that, when she did it long enough there was a strong sense of release and kind of euphoric, tingling feeling up and down my spine. Reich gave the name Orgone energy to an invisible energy system located parallel to the spine that he believed to be associated with a pyschophysical energy of the body; it could cause blockages related to pyschological trauma and, with proper manipulation---release. It was also associated with sexual energy. Reich described this in great detail and an an entire school of psychotherapy therapy emerged from his (Reichian Therapy). The word "Organon" used in the song refers to a property he purchased and lived on in Maine, which was also where his cloubusting experiments took place. Orgone energy, as conceived of by Reich is actually quite similar to the thousands of years old energy systems mapped and still relied upon by Hindu & Tibetan (Tantra) and Chinese (Chi) practitioners and referred to using concepts such as sushumna (chakra system) chi energy system, Central Channel/"Uma" (Tibetan), etc. In fact, Uma Thurman is named after the Central Channel by her dad Robert Thurman, the Tibetologist and former professor at Columbia University (been very fortunate to have met Bob several times). Lastly, the arrest by the FBI in 1941, depicted in the video was most likely the result of mistaken identity. Seems there was someone else named William Reich, who owned a book store in New Jersey that sold Communist books. He was released after a month and never tried or accused of a crime related to his arrest.

Daniel... Daniel... Magnificient artist you chose to react to today (Waaay to many "to"s here!!). The whole "Hounds of Love" is a great album, and Cloudbursting a perfect example of what this incredible artist was able to come up with. An accomplished, singer, dancer, writer... I've been in love with Kate Bush since I first heard "Wuthering Heights", years ago. The funny fact is that I had just discovered Peter Gabriel's 3rd album and that's when I connected Kate Bush's voice with the backvocal lady on "Games Without Frontiers"... While I'm at it, I would recommend "Evie" by Stevie Wright (part I, II & III)... a beaurtiful musical tryptich from downunder ;) And I'm gonna push my luck, since @Britton Parnel talked about performance artist (which, he is absolutely right, KB is a perfect example of!), I'm gonna vouch for a "performance video", "Formidable" by Stromae. Powerful.

•Some Extra Lore• It describes the boy's memories of his life as Wilhelm Reich's son on their family farm, called Orgonon, where the two spent time "cloudbusting", a rain-making process which involved using a machine designed and built by Reich - a machine called a cloudbuster - to point at the sky. The cloudbuster was intended to be used in a way similar to a lightning rod: focusing it on a location in the sky and grounding it in some material that was presumed to absorb orgone-such as a body of water-would draw the orgone energy out of the atmosphere, causing the formation of clouds and rain. Reich conducted dozens of experiments with the cloudbuster, calling the research "Cosmic orgone engineering". Wilhelm Reich was an Austrian doctor of medicine and a psychoanalyst, along with being a member of the second generation of analysts after Sigmund Freud. He moved to New York in 1939, after having accepted a position as Assistant Professor at the New School of Social Research. During his five years in Oslo, he had coined the term "orgone energy"-from "orgasm" and "organism"-for the notion of life energy. In 1940 he started building orgone accumulators, modified Faraday cages that he claimed were beneficial for cancer patients. He claimed that his laboratory cancer mice had had remarkable positive effects from being kept in a Faraday cage, so he built human-size versions, where one could sit inside. This led to newspaper stories about "sex boxes" that cured cancer. Following two critical articles about him in The New Republic and Harper's in 1947, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration obtained an injunction against the interstate shipment of orgone accumulators and associated literature, believing they were dealing with a "fraud of the first magnitude". Charged with contempt in 1956 for having violated the injunction, Reich was sentenced to two years imprisonment, and that summer over six tons of his publications were burned by order of the court. Basically they stole all his research like the American Goverment did with the likes of Nicola Tesla.

Of course I bought the album but discovered it was a different version.....so I bought the 12" single ...it was yet another different version.....Neither were the mini-movie version. I've searched for it on record but it doesn't exist ...Mainly the part in the film - indoors showing the pendulum and Kate singing - "It's you and me daddy" 3 times followed by those haunting strings again. - I ended up buying a vhs video of Kate Bush Greatest Hits The videos - and Cloudbusting was on it.. Brilliant ! I still have the video & my vhs player is still connected and working alongside my dvd player. This is my favourite Kate Bush song.....My next favourite + video is "The Dreaming" with it's Australian Aborigine feel to it. So glad you got to watch this version. The different versions are subtle, so no great jolt - I just happen to like that section I mentioned that is missing from any record. Great reaction. Thankyou.

Kate Bush was one of the first real multi-media artists. Madonna practically stole her live show (but not her music, thankfully) back in the early 80's and everybody in America was agog with her, when Kate had been doing dance, mime, acting, character building in her concerts and videos for 5 or 6 years already. As a Kate Bush fan it was disconcerting to to see, but knowing Kate is the ORIGINAL original, my heart still glows with the warmth from the hearty hearth that is the Wonderful Kate Bush.

This is cool. I've known this song since so long and I really love it but I never researched its meaning, behind the lyrics and video. I thought it was just Kate Bush's active imagination that had created this story of a rain machine. Now I enjoyed the song once more and learnt something more as you took us through the song's origins. Great stuff! I might need to check the actual inspiration of a few more of my fave songs now, just in case I missed something... lol

The song is amazing on its own but the video is the icing on the cake: great visuals, storytelling, and acting (with special guest Donald Sutherland, such a charismatic actor)

I usually agree that a music video can be distracting to the sonic experience of a great tune. Kate Bush is just about the only exception to that rule, for me. But you should watch the videos every chance you get, like you say, you can always have it both ways.

I have suggested this before, but if you like Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell, you should try Laura Nyro (Stoney End, Stoned Soul PIcnic).

Bush hit a sweet spot in the 80s with relentless drums propelling the songs. "Running Up That Hill," the opening track from "Hounds of Love, " is my personal favorite, and I think Kate at the absolute top of her game. The video of that song is a must-see, IMHO.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but this song was inspired by her reading of the biography of the son of Wilhelm Reich, the great German psychologist and philosopher who emigrated to America in the runup to WWII, and was then arrested by the FBI, for his wild ideas and assumed political leanings -- which are incredibly interesting. Sutherland is playing Wilhelm Reich, and Kate is playing his son, watching him be arrested. Organon was the primal life force that Reich posited, and the machine was meant to gather this cosmic energy. He may have been on to something -- much like Nikola Tesla and his overunity free energy devices -- which have been hidden from us for over a century now.

So glad you came back to Kate Bush. As many have said, there are so many layers of depth to her music, and i will say again - you should listen to the entire Hounds of Love album, because side B is a concept called The Ninth Wave - telling the story of a woman spending a night in the water and struggling to survive. I would also suggest doing the video for Hounds of Love, the title track, which is a fantastic allegory of a young woman falling in love. So. Much. Kate.

Great reaction! Really appreciate your deep analysis which, in Kate’s case, I think absolutely should include the video! Noticed your t-shirt! Not sure if you’re aware or not (maybe so), but David Gilmour of Pink Floyd was instrumental in Kate’s emergence, supporting her at the very beginning. I can’t think of a much better vote of confidence than that one! Keep up the great work!

Another good reaction. I like your approach - a helpful short preamble, not too many interruptions while playing, and then good research/analysis afterwards. As to the question of whether to watch Kate’s videos on first listen, I would say yes every time. As well as a great songwriter and vocalist she is a performance artist trained in dance and mime with a keen interest in literature, film and art generally. Drawing from all these influences her videos are carefully crafted to reinforce the mood and messages of the song. Having first watched and read the lyrics you can then just listen second time round with less distracting mental images but with greater understanding of what the song is about. I’ll leave it to others to suggest what to watch/listen to next. There are just too many great songs/videos to choose from. If you are going to visit the second side of her acclaimed Hounds of Love album (“The Ninth Wave”) you can of course choose to focus on individual tracks. But ideally you should regard this side as a single concept work with several sections. For more info on Kate Bush there is a very good shortish RU-vid video from Professor of Rock focused on her.

The video of this song is different from the album version. It is longer and was released in the US as The Meteorological Mix. It is different from the 12" mix which was The Organon Mix. You should check the album version out as it really is great too.

I find this long version tedious musically but it's a good song and an interesting concept. There's an interesting article on Orgones over on Wikipedia. Of more interest musically is 'Orgone Accumulator', a song by the space rock group Hawkwind. Here's that track from their classic 1972 double album "Space Ritual". You really should check them out, they started in 1969 and are still going today. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x4Ve4rrnfz0.html

Daniel, Kate Bush isn't for everyone and her incorporation of dance and theatre drives some people around the bend. I've enjoyed her ever since I first heard Wuthering Heights. I did not know Donald Sutherland ever made an appearance in a video like this.
