Congratulations, you have discovered one of the most innovative artists, Kate Bush was far ahead of her time with her first albums The Kick Inside 1978. For her tour of life in 1979, she had a compact microphone combined with a self-made construction of wire hangers. Later on, her idea was adopted by other artists such as Madonna or Peter Gabriel and used at performances.

Not sure if this is the song I would have chosen for a first Kate Bush reaction. Maybe ease into things a bit with Hounds of Love, Running Up that Hill, or Cloudbusting. Then Wuthering Heights, Babooshka, Army Dreamers, etc.

Interesting facts about Kate Bush : 1.) Her dance instructor , Lindsay Kemp , also taught David Bowie and Peter Gabriel .... 2.) She was discovered and introduced to her recording company by David Gilmour , the singer/guitarist for Pink Floyd .... 3.) She was among the first 5 buyers of the Synclavier ( the first commercially available sampling synthesiser ) .... 4.) She recorded herself and produced her own recordings .... 5.) When she announced her return to performing after a 35 year break, the 22 - show run was sold out in less than 15 minutes

This is from Kate's most experimental and eclectic album "The Dreaming" in 1982. There are some angular tunes and hoarse singing but I like it. As for the video I never liked her mime dancing, just very old hat. Her next album "Hounds of Love" is her most accessible with 4 hit singles on the A side and a suite of songs on the B side that's her masterpiece called 'The Ninth Wave'. Definitely check out that album. "The Dreaming" is more challenging especially for someone new to her work.

First of all, well done for being 'brave' and listening to a recommendation and not choosing the 'obvious' songs that reactors have chosen to follow. I don't think there is a song that is the perfect introduction to Kate...just introducing yourself to her is the start you need. Now, here's the crux, if you invest the time in her, I promise you faithfully, you will be rewarded. You wanted your channel to be dfferent by focussing a lot on lyrics...she is the perfect subject to develop around (obviously there are others too). Esoteric is a perfect word, but one of several in trying to define her. You're clearly a spiritual person...her lyrics will provoke that spirituality, will encourage you to widen your knowledge without threatening your own beliefs. Don't worry too much about dance...thats part of her make up, she encompasses every facet of the word theatre...dance is merely an ingredient. Is she a genius? Yes, she really is. She has fervant admirers from the greats of Rock, Punk, Rap, Hip Hop, she made their heads turn...we are talking Gilmour, Gabriel, Johnny Rotten of all people, Big Boi, Bjork, Tori Amos...thats just for starters. I'm subscribing in the hope, just the hope, you take the journey...in Kates case, you can have it all.

Kate is highly influential, highly respected, loved by all, and still relevant - her 22 series of shows in 2014 sold out over 100,000 tickets in less than 15 minuets (a record for the Hammersmith Apollo). In the months before the concerts, all 10 of her albums were in the top 50 (and 8 in the Top 40 charts) at the same time. The first woman to accomplish such a feat, and she was third behind only Elvis and the Beatles.

When we first saw Kate, she was on the first episode of Saturday Night Live, sitting on a piano in a shimmery silvery/gold unitard and dance miming. Was it The Man With the Child in His Eyes? My memory fails me BUT, my friends and I all looked at each other and said, "Who is THAT?" She was completely original. We became enthralled. (Keep in mind, we grew up with Tull, CSNY, Jimi Hendrix, Yes, James Brown) The British really go "out there". Kate and David Bowie studied mime and dance with the late, great, Lindsay Kemp. They leaned towards theatricality (as if the British already didn't! Remember Ian?). Each decade has it's own flavors of trying something new. It's really a history lesson through music. I adore much of her work. The songs will begin to haunt you. Keep sampling. Try something easier for a first listen: Her official music videos 1. Running Up That Hill, 2. Babooshka, and 3. Wow (Version 1). Music videos were pretty much in their infancy at this point. I'm sure others will fill you in on the many facets of Kate's abilities and breakthroughs. Carry on, DDS!

Kate is one of the most innovative and original artists of all time. It's a brilliant song, but not one I would have recommended starting with. Check out her video of Love and Anger, with David Gilmour on guitar. I would also recommend something from her more accessible album Hounds of Love (which has a string of hit singles on side A, and a brilliant conceptual suite on the whole of side B entitled "The Ninth Wave," one of the most brilliant pieces of prog music ever done). The album that "Suspended In Gaffa" came from, "The Dreaming" was the first she produced entirely by herself and although it did not sell well on release, it is now considered a masterpiece of innovation and experimental music. Kate calls it her "I've gone mad" album. You can definitely go down a rabbit hole with Kate's discography because nothing she does is the same. She truly is a genius musician. "Gaffa" is short for Gaffer's tape, which is primarily used by production crews in live music to tape down cables. That is Kate singing in the background. Kate almost exclusively does all her own backup singing and vocal effects - she has and extraordinary 4 octave voice. And the lady she hugs in the video is her real mum. Kate's own words: "The idea of the song is that of being given a glimpse of 'God' - something that we dearly want - but being told that unless we work for it, we will never see it again, and even then, we might not be worthy of it. Of course, everybody wants the reward without the toil, so people try to find a way out of the hard work, still hoping to claim the prize, but such is not the case. The choruses are meant to express the feeling of entering timelessness as you become ready for the experience, but only when you are ready."

I loved your reaction towards the ending when her singing escalates. I remember feeling the same when I discovered Kate as a 15 year old. "Houdini" is the song where I understood her. For a dude with an open mind, you really drew back from this tune. Your body language, tone and uncomfortable chuckles reveal your perspective. Believe the people who say that our Kate is a true musical genius... and respected by other musicians around the world, inspiring Bjork, Tori Amos, and many other female artists. She was found by David Gilmour when she was 16, and already written a hundred songs. She was a great pianist, wrote all her songs, and began doing a lot of the arranging and producing. She is strange, wonderful, deep and inspiring. You’re likely not old enough to ‘get’ the art of her music and visuals. Back in 2016, after nearly 35 years out of the spotlight... as she had stopped touring... she announced she was taking a 45 day residency at the Hammersmith Odeon theater in London with 24 shows. Despite no lead-up announcement, all tickets were sold in 20 minutes. People traveled from around the world to see the show.

I do wish that she would give us a video of that night, I mean I know she had it recorded. I just don't get why Kate doesn't want to grace her fans with the show that all of them wish they could attend! I know the 9th Wave video is out there, but it's not enough. Don't know why I put 2016 as the year for that show, duh!

She's legendary for a reason. A truly unique talent. She has the gifts to compose a completely "normal" pop hit... but chose to get more and more adventurous with her music. Women hardly ever had the type of creative control Kate Bush fought for and got. Her albums "Never For Ever" and "The Dreaming" are so amazing and different and inspired so many. The Dreaming (where this song came from) is a shock to the system, but ultimately, it's my favorite album. If you're just getting into her music, her most popular album is Hounds Of Love... it's got so many hit singles on it... PLUS one of her greatest artistic achievements, the entire second side of the album, called The Ninth Wave. Well worth checking out... and a great place to start. Cheers!

This album the song is from The Dreaming, took me awhile to get used to it but now its my second fav kate album next to the Hounds of love which is her most pop friendly album. I will say this. If you thought this was weird, this is one of the more TAME songs on The Dreaming. You just need to be patient with her like i was.

I love this track ....her music always has a deep message. Kate has only ever toured twice in her long career. Her last tour Before the Dawn sold out all 22 shows very quickly. People from all around the world descend on London to see her. I managed to get a ticket and the show was incredibly amazing. Ticket prices where selling for over a £1000 on the black market. Kate Bush also set a new Official Chart record after becoming the first female in history to score eight albums on the Official Albums Chart simultaneously. Her music takes you on a journey....be patient.. you'll not be sorry. Hounds of Love is supposed to be one of the best albums ever recorded. She never really conquered America, yet elsewhere around the world she has genius status. Tori Amos was inspired by KB and speak very highly of her.

Kate said about this song "It’s about seeing something that you want-on any level-and not being able to get that thing unless you work hard and in the right way towards it. When I do that I become aware of so many obstacles, and then I want the thing without the work. And then when you achieve it you enter…a different level-everything will slightly change. It’s like going into a time warp which otherwise wouldn’t have existed.
@lewismaddox4132

Your theories are understandable but off. When she talks about having it all she doesn't mean doing, thinking, experiencing absolutely everything. She's talking about feeding her curiosity, learning, enjoying her work, a feeling of purpose and satisfying and sharing relationship. She's also talking about not just lethargy and lack of work ethic but hurdles that dissuade us from even trying, a hopelessness. I think if you listened again to the part that hit you wrong, during the final stanza when she got gutteral and shrill. Listen to it and ask yourself, "Do you know anyone else who could make those sounds?" Those sounds are the sounds of hope dying, the voice of ultimate frustration and despair. She utters them perfectly and the answer is no, no one else in this planetary system could express them with such fidelity and sincerity.

I've been listening to Kate Bush since I was ten or younger! I'm now fifty. You have to understand that Kate's early music was very "weird and dreamy".....after all, we all have weird dreams now and then. That's what "Gaffa" means...that state when you're half awake/half asleep. She also includes a lot of British slang in her songs, so if you don't get what she's saying, that's probably why. "Gaffa" was made in '82, on The Dreaming album. The lady she hugs in the video is her Mum. Listen to more of Kate's early work, you'll soon get it!

It is so wonderful when someone finds Kate. You might want to try a more straight forward song such as "The Kick Inside" or "Pulling the Pin". Cloud Busting is also good... As for her odd style of dance, for a while it seems that she was in to Gurdjieff. Her dance for "Them Heavy People" is always the same. Kate is wonderful - watch the movie "The Red Shoes", or listen to the song she did with Prince.

I think I t was a perfect thing for you to hear from Kate Bush for the first time. When I hear you try and figure out the song you make me smile. And I think of the title of the Talking Heads song ‘Stop Making Sense’. Why not just treat her songs like dreams. Let them reach you through your feelings and the ideas, memories and feelings that pop up when you hear them. Similar songs to this (because of the whimsical element) are ‘There Goes a Tenner.’ You’ll like that, it’s very easy to figure out. A darker but also fairly easy song to understand is ‘Army Dreamers.’ You say the song sounds like a circus, I think it has a very Irish flavour. Her mother was Irish. And a number of her songs have a folk Irish feel.

Kate Bush is my all-time favorite artist, and you really should check out some of her other stuff. Much of it is much more accessible, like Hounds of Love, Running Up That Hill, This Woman's Work... so many more. She really is a musical genius, writing all her own songs, programming and performing all the keyboards, and her band is always exquisite. Again -- I'm very impressed at your reaction. This is definitely not the entry point into the music catalog of Kate Bush. Many people start with Wuthering Heights (I'd recommend the version from her 1986 "greatest hits" compilation album rather than the original version) or several tracks from side 1 of the Hounds of Love album. I love Kate Bush, but some of her material is really out there. Lyrically, she is definitely worth looking at in depth. Ultimately, if you can someday get to the Ninth Wave (the entire side 2 from Hounds of Love) you will find a musical treasure.

I hope this very spiritual song finds a home in people's minds to re-emerge later. No, we can't have it all, although in youth, that is what we would aim for. That is an unrealistic ambition but common. When maturity dawns, we come to understand that. Kate speaks to Life, her other worldly voices suggest the mystical, esoteric aspect of coming to terms with Life - and the after Life. She is a holy spirit

I am glad you did Wuthering Heights, this song is kind of obscure for a beginning song. Running Up That Hill was her biggest and most accessible song in the US. As a big fan, this wouldn't be the song I would introduce Kate with. Besides the complexity of the song, it isn't her strongest. As goes for the singing to be honest. I understand others who would pick Running Up That Hill, Cloudbusting, Wuthering Heights, but I would go for a more laidback song. I think her voice is her force, her music the many different vehicles to carry it across. A better combination would be The Sensual World or All The Love.

They are extraordinarily patronising. I was offered your reaction by the RU-vid algorithm. I smiled because your reaction is the usual reaction to a first time listen to Kate Bush before she slowly seeps into your musical mind. This video is a year old now. How did you get on? Were you able to step into Kates music, quietly on your own without anybody knowing? I have always noticed in many Kate Bush videos she plays two versions of herself. One part she may appear normal and somewhat calm many times in the chorus her character changes and becomes almost manic. My favorite songs are Strange Phenomenon and Breathing. No two kate Bush albums are alike.

She was discovered by David Gilmour from Pink Floyd, collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Prince, Eric Clapton, Elton John, who all immediately agreed before even hearing the material. Do not underestimate this woman. She was the first woman to produce herself, the first to innovate the headset mic, the first to incorporate digital sample technology into her songwriting, and the first British woman to reach #1 in The UK and Europe with her own material in 1977. I confess, I am a fanatic, and many of her fans, strangely enough, are male musicians like myself. And yes, she created an epic masterpiece like all the progressive rock greats. The Ninth Wave is a seven part epic from 1985, spanning the second half of the album Hounds of Love, widely regarded as THE greatest album of that decade..no shit!!

My favorite song off of my favorite album. This was 1982? When I first heard it I was like wtf. She uses her voice on this album in many different textures. It took about two weeks and suddenly it was the greatest thing ever. Something just clicks if you dont like it at first. I think of this album, The Dreaming, as being Afro-Celtic.

I could not see the video on my ipad. The backing sounds like an elaborate German automaton i sore long ago, with jerky figures coming and going and telling some kind of story.

She has a much more accessible song from 1993 - rubber band girl. It's about as "normal" as she gets

All of her work is unique and fascinating. But the albums 'Hounds of Love' and 'The Sensual World' are the peak of her creative work, IMO. Not that she wasn't creative before or after - I just love those two records above all others and they are full of amazing music.

If you’re going to get into kate Bush you have to dive in with both feet and breathe the mist. She is a paradox balanced on a question floating on wind of wonder. For something a bit more straightforward there’s this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VjEq-r2agqc.html Kate with Peter Gabriel, ex genesis frontman.

Check out the album Hounds of Love that is more acceptable for new Kate Bush listeners . It's a brilliant piece of work. I first heard her music when I was a kid in the 70s and have loved her work ever since

You need to listen to more digestible Kate Bush songs. Cloudbusting, running up that hill, sat in your lap. The entirety of the dreaming album is genius. She is a trained dancer as well.

Now compare it to anything since then you may realise why us oldies think music has gone downhill. Its clever, inventive and different, unlike most work put out now.

As a dancer, she is trained, but cannot be contained by anything as pedestrian as training. As a young woman (I’m 58) I loved her songs but didn’t like the movement. Now I watch her and love how original she is in every way.

I laughed so many times while watching this. It is riveting to witness people taking in Kate Bush, Bjork and Tori Amos for the first time. Artists like these often are off putting initially, and then for many of us they become our favorites by far.

Wow, did NOT expect you to try the genius of Kate Bush ! A true original. (Normal ? Who cares about normal ?? ;o) BUT: i don't know what the people who suggested this as an entry point were thinking. The Dreaming - the album from which this is off - was a flop cause it was considered too weird - at the time. Yes, carnivals can be...creepy ;o) Her videos are an acquired taste (Kate Bush is more ballet than TIK TOK dancing, that's fer sure, but if you go back, try Running Up That Hill (a deal with God) video) - for now i'd stick with just the music. Around 1980, she started collaborating with Peter Gabriel, delving into "world music", more percussive stuff. Yes, she's doing all vocals - she has an incredible range. I'd sure like to see you react to her masterpiece, The Ninth Wave (girl drowns and tells the story), or maybe try something like Cloudbusting. She was discovered by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd who brought her to EMI. He plays on her 2nd biggest hit, Running Up That Hill. (Next "weird" one: Talk Talk, The Color of Spring ?, or Peter Gabriel's No Self Control, with Kate Bush on backing vocals?)
