Huge Kate Bush fan here and absolutely hated her when I first heard her music. Don't let the idiots in the comments get you down - you're allowed to have your own tastes and if you piss some people off you're probably doing it right! So many 'reactors' pander to what they think their audiences want in their reactions.

Before that, some older ones, like Wow, Oh England My Lionheart, Babooshka. Maybe even check out her Live at Hammersmith Odeon 1979 concert. The Dreaming from the album of the same name the nicely illustrates the evolution of her weirdness. Running Up That Hill was probably her biggest hitand also shows her dancing matured. Later video became increasingly important aspect and Bush involved herself with directing them. Experiment IV is a later song where the video is an integral part, directed by Bush herself (and a surprise appearance by a well-known actor). The Red Shoes goes even more into that direction, it's basically a short film. Then she went on hiatus for 15 years.

The Hounds of Love album is ranked in the top 100 of all time, especially because of side B. Those 30 mins in side B come from another dimension.

I agree with you Daniel. The fact is you won't like every single piece of music you listen to and that's ok. Kate Bush, I like her but she is an acquired taste, I think. Listening to all styles and genre's of music will make you a well rounded listener but again you don't have to like it all and that's cool.

You should check out the entire Hounds of Love album, make sure that, when you get to the B side you hear the whole suite of songs. One of my favorite albums, although my very favorite album of hers is the even more experimental The Dreaming which includes Suspended in Gaffa (the other songs are even better).

For a great vocal performance from TV see "This Woman's Work" (1989) - RU-vid" from the Terry Wogan Show. Just her singing and playing piano. The song was written for the 1988 film She's Having A Baby, and was covered by the singer Maxwell in 2009. Many people only know that cover. On her albums she plays piano and synths, and usually sings backup vocals. The video of her duet with Peter Gabriel for his song "Don't Give Up" is also popular.
@RandyHall324
@RandyHall324 3 года назад
You bring up an interesting point. Many of the songs you've reacted to are songs that, even back in the day, were "radio-friendly", and were expected to become popular. You'd buy the album because of a hit song or two, and then at least be exposed to the "deep cuts" that would never have achieved the same popularity. For me, often those songs would become my favorites, sometimes because the hits would be overplayed, but also because they simply grew on you after repeated listenings. The first time I ever heard Kate Bush was when Running up that Hill was on the radio. Loved it, and a few years later bought her greatest hits album - the first tune was Wuthering Heights, and my first reaction to it was almost completely based on her vocals, which struck me very differently than what I'd already heard - it took me several listens before I started to love it. A lot of my very favorite songs are those that didn't hit me immediately. I'll often find myself watching a reaction, and thinking, "that's fair - but you may change your mind after another listen or two". I'm sure you can think of a few yourself. Always enjoy your thoughtful reactions as well as the variety of music you react to!

I loved her the first time I heard her on SNL in 1978. It was her first US television appearance. She sang "Rolling The Ball" and "man with the child in his eyes." I was recently reminded the actual title of Rolling the Ball is "Them heavy people." I have a vivid memory of her writhing around on top of the grand piano singing the words rolling the ball. Those are the words that stuck with me. Her performance of Man with the child in his eyes was mesmerizing. Kate's sound and presentation was definitely different than anything I had ever experienced before. I didn't dislike it, though. I just sat up and took notice of the musical genius I was being introduced to via Saturday Night Live. Amazing! I get it if the first exposure to her is a little jarring. Give it time! As you say, she will grow on you💃

Daniel, I love a wide range of music, all kinds of artists, but listening to Kate's music is not like listening to anyone else's, it transports you to another world. She is truly unique, so many other extremely talented artists consider her a genius. The Hounds of love album is her masterpiece, it is truly mindblowing, the A side, is a sample of some of her hits. The b side has to listen to as a suite of connected songs, I don't believe any other artist in the world would be capable of putting this together, she works on a completely different level to everyone else

We were exposed to a lot of experimental, unusual music at this time, it kind of became the norm, if that makes sense. I can totally get that it's something you have to take time to absorb. Nobody is ever going to love all the same music as anyone else, I don't know why people get so precious about it. Music should bring you joy, and it's as unique to every individual as fingerprints.

Although I fell in love with Kate Bush right away at hearing Wuthering Heights, don't worry about not falling in love with her right away. There's sooo much to listen to. You should try reacting to her more "rocky" songs like Hammer Horror, Don't Push Your Foot On the Heartbreak, Violin, Full House, Breathing, Pull Out The Pin (with David Gilmour doing some of the vocals) and James and the Cold Gun. Cheers from Tel Aviv :-)

My journey with Kate Bush started in 1978 and I feel privileged in having witnessed her first ever TV performance in “Bios Bahnhof” on German TV. At that time, she played 2 songs, Kite and Wuthering Heights. I found kite an odd song, but when hearing Wuthering Heights, I was blown away and have been a fan ever since. Later when I was older, I bought all her albums, and I was very sad when in the mid 90th, she vanished for a long period. Interestingly, because of discussions in newsgroups on the Internet at that time, that brought me to Tori Amos, as people suggested she had kind of a similar vibe. I have since also become a fan of Tori Amos.

Thanks for returning to this artist. Kate Bush is my all-time favorite musical artist. However, I first encountered her with her first album and she didn't click right away for me. I listened to a cassette tape of her that I had bought and just didn't like it. I think that she was just so different from what I had heard before, that I couldn't really process it. I decided to listen again before returning it, and on second listen, it was somehow the most amazing thing I had ever heard. But everyone likes different things and some or all of Kate may ultimately not turn out to be to your liking. Kate is hugely influential on an amazing number of artists. From Prince, who performed on one of her songs, to Big Boi, from the hip hop band Outkast, to Adele, to Maxwell (who covered her song This Woman's Work), to.... well, her influence in the music industry is huge. She is really creative and has managed to maintain control of her music and its production. She takes years between releases, crafting her music until it is what she wants to release to the world. As for what order to listen to her work, that is kind of tough to say. As you found, her 4th album, which Suspended In Gaffa came from, is possibly her most inaccessible work to newcomers. What I would suggest is probably to listen to some of her better regarded songs without really worrying about the order. If you keep exploring her work, you will get a feel for what you want to try. As for specific songs, I would suggest that you give This Woman's Work, Cloudbusting, The Man With The Child In His Eyes (one of my absolute favorites) and Running Up That Hill a listen. That last one is probably her overall most successful song commercially. If you want to explore further, what was originally the 2nd side of the Hounds of Love album, which the song you just reacted to came from, is a thematic cycle known collectively as The Ninth Wave. I think you would get a real kick out of listening to that in its entirety, as it kind of tells a story when listened to in order.

I've loved Kate Bush's music since the first time I heard it. Hounds of Love is at the top of my list of the greatest albums. But I never saw her videos, until after I was a fan, and I'm glad I didn't because many of them are so weird that they detract from the music. The drumming rhythms on this album are awesome, as evidenced in this track. As for the interesting ending --- many of the songs in the concept album run into each other without pause

Kate's never afraid for her range of music to be unpredictable and a little 'out there', and it isn't always everyone's cup of tea so it's fine not to pick it up immediately (or ever!) because you react honestly and that's what makes your content worth watching. I think I was lucky being of an age when her music was gradually exposed to me album by album to allow a semblance of order and some much needed breathing space rather than diving straight into the middle of it all, but hopefully if you stick with it you'll be rewarded too.

You are experiencing what a lot of Kate Bush newbies go through; she has 3 basic music paths and while I love them all, they are not for everyone. You seem to relate to the path that explores the intensities of love, unrequited or complex. There are too many of this path to list but I think the ones that will really move you are, "This Woman's Work", "The Man With the Child in His Eyes", "The Kick Inside" and "Wow". If you want a song of hers that is interesting and just plain fun, try "Them Heavy People".

I have always loved that not everyone likes kates music or not all of it. She is unusual and unique (best way to be) and has always been brave enough to experiment which has inspired other musicians to also take risks! Glad you are being honest Dan and understand her stuff sometimes needs a few listens and it grows on you but makes it long lasting as you can hear her songs years later and still hear new sounds! So multi layered and uses just her own vocal as backing singer unless a males voice is required. Yes I am a life long fan and the Soundscape of my life!!!

Kate Bush the Ninth Wave ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_256xd9N27o.html 'The vocal was performed live while filming Kate lying in the huge water tank at Pinewood Studios. This was to create a sense of realism, as the character in the song is lost at sea. However it became more realistic than Kate had imagined. She spent so long in the water during the first day of filming that she contracted mild hypothermia. She recovered after a day off and carried on filming. Everyone agreed it had added to the authenticity of the performance.' from Kate Bush Music.

My first encounter with the music of Kate Bush was when my english teacher played "Wuthering Heights" during english class. I guess we were reading the book by Emily Brontë, and she wanted to broaden our horizons. The majority of the class thought it was a strange song, but I was immediately spellbound by her voice. It just felt so right. It's great to see that you continue to explore her music. I agree with you that "Suspended in Gaffa" is not the easiest/best song to start with. Her singing was a shock to most people when they first heard Wuthering heights however what was not clear at the time was that the singing style was exaggerated even for Kate as she was playing the character of a Ghost! Those of us who were around at the time have had 45 years to get used to it and to love it. Other songs illustrated her vocal versatility and though she has always been enormously expressive in her phrasing the majority of songs are nowhere near as shrill as that first single. She is also a tremendously intelligent writer and arranger as well as an accomplished dancer. Genius is an epithet too commonly bandied about but when you look at her whole body of work it is probably justified. Suggest ‘Wow’, ‘Man with the child in his eyes’, ‘Running up that hill’, ‘Cloudbusting’, ‘Hammer Horror’ , ‘Army Dreamers’, ‘James and the cold gun’, ‘Breathing’ ......... the list goes on and on.

Kate Bush can be a challenging artist to get into at first listen. Her style is so eclectic and varied that if someone is expecting a standard pop or rock song they're going to be somewhat taken aback, and not sure what to make of her music. But the more effort you put in, the more reward you get out, with repeat listens and deeper dives into her full body of work. A truly outstanding artist whos music really sticks with you and gets deep inside the longer you let yourself marinate in the music.

Kate is a national treasure here in the UK, her strangeness and artistry never really translated over in the US. In 2016 Kate Bush played 22 shows in London at the Hammersmith Apollo after not playing live since 1979 and sold them all out in record time. I was lucky enough to go and it was the most unique show I've ever been too, truly a one off artist. I think with Kate You need to listen to the albums. If I was advising a first Kate listen I would start with her first album The Kick Inside as it's a little less challenging than most of her catalogue.

The main thought I had for your first Kate Bush reaction was that you jumped into the deep end of her catalog and reacted to one of her songs that was REALLY out there. I would have gone with something more accessible. I think if you want to get a good sampling of her style, check out her compilation album The Whole Story and then proceed from there. Hounds of Love is her most successful album ever, and this, the title track, is one of my favorites by her.

A lot of good suggestions here re: what direction to take with Kate. I remember entering a smoky mid-80s college apt, visiting some know-it-all 7th yr grad student who was obsessed with Kate. I listened carefully and just didn't get it. But it stuck with me so much i bought an album and listened again and it just hit me. Now, I'd suggest Hounds of Love is the most accessible but I love The Dreaming - there's nothing quite like it. So, I perhaps do a full album dive into 1 early, 1 mid-career and one late career album, more or less (note she didn't release any new music between 93 and 2005). So, Lionheart-2nd to Hounds -5th to Aerial-8th. Or Never For Ever-3 to The Dreaming-4 to Director's Cut-9. Regardless it will likely be a rewarding journey whatever path you take.

Anyone I ever met that knew anything about good music loved Kate Bush. Admittedly I had a lot of catching up to. I started with her greatest hits album called The Whole Story. Well worth it. And did you say Bowie? Yes!!! There is a certain order of his albums that I would encourage to understand the arc of his artistry. In order I would recommend starting with Hunky Dory, then The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and Spiders from Mars, then Aladinn Sane, then Diamond Dogs, then Young Americans, then Station to Station, then skip to Low, then Scary Monsters, Let's Dance, Heathen, The Next Day finishing with Blackstar. Lots to love besides these, but this will give you a good sense of what and how he influenced so many other artists and music lovers over the decades he was with us. Fasten your seatbelt! Blessings Daniel. Peace.

Hounds of Love - is her break out album in 85-86'. You have to listen to side 2 all together - it's all connected. - BTW Go back and listen to "Suspended in Gaffa" again and also the whole album ( Especially the title track "The Dreaming" ) - it does take more than 1 listen - you get to know her that way!

I feel like you're right. For most people, Kate Bush takes getting used to. But for me, the first time I heard her (and it was a full end-to-end listen to this full album), I said something like "Finally. Music for me." LOL!

Like Joni Mitchell, Bush was her own producer. She has her own studio and takes tons of time to complete an album. The opening of the sound is from the film Night of the Demon.

The Dreaming album is definitely odd. But I grew to love it. But you don’t have to love everything that’s suggested to you! That’s what’s great about music!

Almost Anything from 2005's "Aerial" would be great. Sea of Honey and Nocturne being the leads. Sensual World is an incredible video . Love the use of bird and bird like sounds in so many of her songs

I had a thought in the 1980s that many Kate Bush songs fail, but she was reaching so far with them that she still is fascinating. Two Kate Bush songs I think you should hear are "Breathing", which has a very unique POV. It's sung from the perspective of...well it isn't that hard to figure out in the song, so no spoilers here. The other is "Army Dreamers". Also, if you haven't yet heard Laurie Anderson, I recommend "O Superman", which might be her only "hit", though there is a lot more to discover.

Daniel, I'm so glad you returned to Kate. As I have said, she is my all-time favorite artist, but I do agree, it takes time to really understand and process. (And don't worry about the fanatical fans who send backhanded insults at people who don't like her). She is definitely an acquired taste. Hounds of Love happens to be one of my favorite songs by her. I find it to be a beautiful love song. Knowing that you are intelligent, and appreciate good musical construction and intelligent lyrics, I'm going to recommend a few Kate Bush songs that might be different than what others suggest (although I will say This Woman's Work is a pretty amazing song emotionally, and you definitely need to listen to it sometime.) But I know you like some prog music (and did you know she has worked with both Peter Gabriel and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd on multiple occasions?) so I'm going to suggest some songs from her that are more challenging. I would recommend Pull Out the Pin, Night of the Swallow, and Breathing. Then, as others have suggested, I would HIGHLY recommend you listen to (and react to) The Ninth Wave, which is the entire side 2 of the Hounds of Love album. The songs on side 2 of that album are a concept that tell the story of a woman trapped in the water over night. Incredibly powerful, complex, and many think (as do I) it's her magnum opus. All that said, I would be super interested in anything you reacted to from Ms. Bush. Thank you.

Yeh, "Cloudbusting" is great. "Running up that Hill" was another more accessible hit off the same album. I think Kate Bush really is nothing that necessarily clicks immediately with the listener. It took me a while, and I know enough people who don't like her voice and/or music... BTW I think it is good to be honest with reactions. This is what spurs discussion. I certainly do not simply come here just to see you listening to artists I like and be simply confirmed in that you go "oh, yeah that's really all totally great". :-) Side note: The Futureheads did a fantastic indie cover of "Hounds of Love"!

my own experience I fell in love with her imediately after "the man with the child in his eyes" and "Wuthering Heights" but, some people it is a process, I'm gonna compare her to artists like the Beatles in that every album and phase was completely reinventing herself, and yep she has a nearly 4&1/2 octave voice . this whole album"HOL" is a masterpiece she wrote arranged recorded and produced herself in her own studio, I'm gonna say the path for most people falling in love with Kate's music and art "running up that hill" "Cloudbusting" "this woman's work" "the man with the child in his eyes" and "breathing" BUT SINCE YOU'RE KIND OF A PROG FAN side two of HOL. is a suite of songs as a whole concept piece called "the ninth wave" so I'd request you listen to some of her songs then at some point hit "the ninth wave" in one sitting 😜

Kate Bush is far more than a singer which I think gets lost in studying her records. Her writing and arranging are extraordinary, but beyond that, she is a producer and a videographer who has studied dance, mime, and stage magic and incorporated them in both live performance and video. My suspicion is that when she is writing and making audio recordings, she never loses her focus on the visual, making the recordings something that can be visualized in a special way. Hounds of Love is often pointed to as possibly her best but I think The Sensual World is pretty extraordinary, too.

Good man. Glad to see you persevering with this artist. Honestly , you haven’t touched the sides yet. And for a man that likes lyrics, you have so much to discover. ( check out Cloudbusting from the same album). Let’s get emotional on the next one - This Woman’s Work or her duet with Peter Gabriel, Don’t Give Up. BTW, her music is always peerless: the videos however were often poor and rarely portrayed the lyrical and musical intensity of the song. ( check out Army Dreamers to substantiate this). Well done again, Daniel

Kate's 'hounds of love' may have some relation to the poem 'The Hounds of Heaven' by Francis Thompson, which Kate being British would know. My favorite poem.

I am a huge fan of Kate Bush.....She is a true artist. She is a legend.......She is a goddess of music......her music and videos speak of things from another world especially the world of Love. She takes tribal drumming and Bohemian music and forms songs that are palatable for the Western ear. Genius work from a genius.

I'd like to add another recommendation for "Cloudbusting." The official video features the actor Donald Sutherland. The song is based on a book she read, which also makes a brief appearance in the video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pllRW9wETzw.html

So glad you came back (as I just have here). My reason to come back here is to ask if you have found "Women's Work" yet. Kate Bush can use simplicity to create deep emotion. I am just finishing Hemmingway's 'A Farewell to Arms' and heard again 'Women's Work' and am devastated. You will very much like her song. The final Hemingway scene involves child birth and how the man feels. Her song is all about that scene. Her song, with that in my mind, brought me to tears. No spoiler alert for either one.....but you MUST go there.
