From what I understand regarding this song, it's about a bad relationship [not necessarily romantic] that seems to have elements of domestic violence in it. it's from the perspective of the victim of that violence or emotional abuse. The 'gap' he's talking about is like a dissociative state where he is neither here nor there - and the survival at the end in my opinion is where they finally decided to fight back.

I find that I don't bang my head with Tool as much as I tend to sway. I always thought it was unique watching Maynard on stage and how he moves his body throughout the song, then after a while I find that I kinda tend to do the same thing. I thought it was just an element of the performance, but it's really just sort of how the body adapts to their music.

It’s ok to overlook Maynard in Tool the instrumentals is Tool. To appreciate Maynards vocal range you need to delve into APC , Puscifer Maynard in Tool is absolutely gold, but even Maynard has said that he is just a back drop to the instrumental. Some of Maynard’s best vocals is on Puscifer. The hole is Deep, the journey is long Just saw Tool in Chicago last night. I have some advice for anyone that’s gonna see them yet this tour.... stay away from the bootleg videos till after you see them. Don’t ruin your experience. Great concert, not their best set list, but I’ve been spoiled The bar is real high for me. Tool is definitely a 5 ⭐️ ticket

Danny Carey is all about polyrhythms. And Tool is both a very orchestral band and all about odd time signatures (7/8, 9/8, 5/8 etc, and not 4/4 like most basic music is written in).
@troystiefer7986
@troystiefer7986 4 года назад
The drum patterns are called POLYRHYTHMS. You can see videos on youtube on what they are. You use mathmatic ratios to achieve them and that why Danny Carey is so good. If you watch videos on how POLYRHYTHMS work, it will make you appreciate how complex this music really is.

When it comes to keeping up with the odd time signatures I've found it's easier to just chill and let it wash over me and not worry about whether I'm keeping up or not, the rises and falls are just so new and different that I can count on them to keep me guessing. I think that's what I love about them, and progressive rock/metal in general. Keeps you sharp! Because once I've learned those rhythms I know where to anticipate the changes, and all of sudden it's a great ride that I'm so there for. Once you've finished reacting to Tool you should give Tool's ol' grandaddy a listen, King Crimson. I suggest Frame by Frame from the early '80s Discipline Album era, I was addicted to that song for weeks!

DREW FORTUNE - I believe this lyrically to be about the the relationship between Mother/Child. With lines like, choke this infant here before me, I saw the gap again today (vagina maybe before child is born), what is this but my reflection, you didn’t need to shit on me (mothers sometimes shit during child birth) . . . And maybe also about the edge that many of us, as parents, are pushed to with the difficulties of raising children. Thanks man!!

your commentary on this was wonderful. quick story: I've just about been listening to 90% Fear Inoculum since the day I got it. Love it. I went to see them October 13th and when Pnuema came on, I hit 95% of their time changes when I was rocking out to it. lol. I thought that was pretty cool, because as you say, you need to hear it many times to know when the time changes come in. Strange a bit, but something satisfying about it. They're great artists, and truly world class live. I hope if you ever get a chance to see them live, that you take the opportunity.

I get the he/she relationship interpretation of the song. I even get the man/God interpretation. What's always taken hold and violently shaken me is the interpretation that it's a confrontation with yourself, that confrontation being some form of internal or external struggle that's difficult and uncomfortable to acknowledge. Due to the intimate nature of the Salival version, I think this perspective comes across more clearly.

I'm in Cincinnati Ohio and finally, I get to see them tonight. My 15th concert in 20 years. It's an experience, not just a concert!

Drew, there is a video of a live performance of this song in which a fan gets on stage and is promptly jiu-jitsued by MJK. MJK spends most of the song on the kid’s back, riding him. It’s def worth a watch.

I was in salt lake at the show where the live salival version was recorded. I was 16 years old then. I’m now 39 😕 I’m old as fuck, but this album has been my absolute go to album since it’s release! ÆNIMA never gets old! I can still jam it front to back without skipping a second of it... tool is easily the greatest band on the planet! Catch them live! Pay for the good seating! It’s life altering

Salival I believe is in reference to the album all being live songs. Now if you were say- it’s all live all-and then say -Salival- they sound incredibly alike. Just my thought though. Remember to spiral out with compassion, self respect, and friction.

You're analysis is so keen, for a youngster. Haha. I'm really enjoying, and sticking with your reactions since Fear Inoculum. Don't worry that Pushit evades your attempt to head bang. I've been listening to this song since it was released, and I'm still learning the nuances and lyrics. BTW, it's okay to skip (-) Ions. It may be the closest thing to a shit Tool song, just for the simple fact that it does not know when to give up. I'm certainly open to other commenters' opinions, and maybe I'll learn a new appreciation for (-) Ions. But for now I vote skip it.

Don't worry if Tool doesn't immediately click for you - I used to HATE Tool. The music just didn't make sense. But one day, it did - and I've never looked back. :)

Always an amazing track to give a listen. Every song from their album, Salival, is live. Great reaction and all great comments at the end. The band uses a lo of polyrhythm, tone layering and counterpoint - all of which are used heavily in classical music (which is a few hundred years of music).

Personally I think the live Salival version of Pushit rivals Pink Floyd’s live Pulse recordings. It’s just one of those performances captured in time that cannot be excelled in any way. It must have been amazing to see it live

If when I say I might fade like a sigh if I stay, you minimize my movement anyway, I must persuade you another way. iirc Maynard has said that Prison Sex, Stinkfist, and Pushit are about the cycles of abuse, and Pushit is about finally seeing the abuse for what it is and saying "enough" something along those lines anyway

I think its funny when people say they cant headbang to Tool, you just have to have a polyrhythmic headbang. Idk I just havent had a time where I could close my eyes and meet the beat, even if I've never heard a song. Anticipate the way the flow goes. Spiral out, keep going🤘

They lull you in to a trance. They make you comfortable. Once you've found that comfort, they drag you on an unfamiliar journey through the unknown, and eventually you end up on the other side, safely and forever changed. Tool is definitely an experience.

Its better to get to grips with this version first, as when you do hear the Salival rendition, you will hear the changes, and paces made , and prolly end up just likin em both anyway. I utterly love the Salival one- you can absolutely hear where they were going with more progressive sounds, taking them to Fear Inoculum today. Theres still a lot to absorb with this one,and its a mammoth voyage to happily take. The mid section, when it calms down a bit , is very atmospheric. I remember seeing Tool at their first Irish show- 2001, in Dublin, SFX Centre. This was a huge centerpiece of the gig. And like everyone else, Im hoping to hear news of a Dublin gig next year!

interesting that you say that listening to tracks from the new album make you want to pay more attention to their older tracks. I grew up with their older tracks and had difficulty appreciating their new album. I listened multiple times to give the benefit of the doubt and began to appreciate the new album, but their older stuff I appreciated and magical immediately. Thanks for this perspective, makes me understand their genius in the new one.
