i miss the physical rotating bezel. c'mon Google and Samsung! people like products that have that more satisfying physical connection. why keep taking it away when it was a hit in the first place? you'd think if people like it it'd be worth the extra effort to include it or maybe not?
Am I the only one who thinks this is the easiest thing and google should have done it from the start? Just have a "Hey Gemini" command in addition to "Hey Google", simple! Is it that hard to implement?
Gemini is terrible if compared to Google Assistant. Twice a day i ask to Assistant to read radio news, and it doesn't hesitate. I've tried with Gemini, and simply can't do such a simple task. That Assistant's feature is very useful, and avoids me to use 3 different apps to hear those radio news. Probably google want's to try something new with Gemini, unfortanetly giving up on some great features we've been using for years....
Stupid that software features like "averaging temperature sensors across your home" are being gated to the new generation Nest only. Why can't the current Nest + temp sensors do that?
@@Spo8 Yeah, in a hard-coded 6 hour chunk... It's not a very flexible feature and I'm bummed that these improvements aren't coming to mine. Seems like table-stakes.
That was the main reason I switched away from the Nest thermostat. Nice to see it on the new one but still bummed the new temp sensors don't have any kind of presence sensing or humidity readings..
Nervous about the streamer only being 22% faster. I was hoping they'd just toss in an old Tensor chip like Apple and charge like $200. But hopefully it runs well enough. Definitely grabbing one
IT has on-board storage of 32gb, not expandable storage of 32gb. Plus only 22% faster isn't a huge boost coming from the previous Google TV dongle which is pretty sluggish
I'm pretty sure the Nvidia shield is still light years ahead of anything out there right now. And I have the original, And this is still giving me no reason to try something else.
Honestly would rather have replaceable batteries instead. If you need to, just get some cheap rechargeable batteries like from Ikea to have to things charged. I’ve been using my chromecast everyday for the last 2 years and still have the original batteries inside. No point in fixing something that isn’t really broken.
I've been waiting for a custom app button/favorite button on a remote from any of these stream device companies for a decade now, it really took someone this long to come up with that bright idea?
To not include a USB port for playing media on a media device is absolutely wild. Semi understandable with the former puck design but a decent size box and not include it is unacceptable.
@@yonkocommander5531 USBC for power which means you'll have to use a dongle with power pass through like you had to on the previous iteration... More importantly it indicates they have not enabled native NTFS support which means a whole lot of hassle setting up workarounds to play any decent quality movie file.
It's a huge deal break, I really hope there's a "pro" version with more ports in the future. It seems like Google doesn't want you to play your own library and wants you to subscribe to streaming services instead
I mean,,, Apple TV doesn’t have one either…? I don’t think that’s the role it’s trying to play. And the previous version did support connecting USB hubs to it’s charging port, so this one might too
Doesn’t sound like the Google Home hardware will be running AI models. Rather, most AI enhancements are coming to the Home app with some potentially relying on the cloud. Absolutely hate Google’s reliance on the cloud, especially without much talk of protecting user’s data on that cloud from themselves.
@@stephen_sezsthe increase in value is very low. The new chip is just up to 22% faster which isn’t great considering how slow chrome-cast is and the new features are purely software based and will not benefit most users as most don’t have a smart home. If anything, it’s a decrease in value
You get what you pay for a lot of the cheap streaming devices run ridiculously slow. I prefer Apple TV but if I was in Google ecosystem I’d definitely be on the market for this. $99 is not a lot of money for something you will use daily for several years
So Google could set up the thermostat such that when you choose home in maps it triggers the thermostat based on distance to cool the room/home before we get home
I love the new thermostat designs...really thoughtful design clearly went into these, and I'm ok with them looking like a pixel watch (which I use anyway). I'm also really looking forward to the streamer and it's functionality within my entire smart home setup. Great video, thank you!
The Streamer is coming in Europe the same day as in the US. Though the thermostat is another story... The 2020 thermostat still hasn't been released outside the US/Canada.
I think thermostats are reliant on the communications standards that exist and Europe usually is very different from NA in terms of appliances and how they work. That's probably why the thermostats are not launched here
Does anyone know if you need to remove the backing plate from the previous thermostat or can you just swap the new thermostat into place without having to disconnect all the wires?
The big thing that I'd like to know is whether the "smart thermostat" is smart enough to allow for a single set temperature and intelligently select between heating and cooling. For example, my current Ecobee (a fairly old model) lets me select both a heating and cooling temperature, but they must be 5 degrees apart. This tends to be problematic in the spring and fall where temperatures can easily be warm during the daytime (necessitating cooling) but colder in the evening/night (necessitating heating). It boggles my mind that the "smart" thermostat can't see that the temperature has fallen below the set temperature and that the temperature outside (via sensor or Internet-based weather) is also below the set temperature, and based upon that, heating may be needed. (I think you could have a user tolerance level for how quickly to adjust.)
@@MorbidGod391 google home can control matter devices locally? Since when? I have quite a few matter via thread or wifi devices here, last time I tested like a month ago, it didn't work. Home Assistant on the other hand of course works fine when internet is off.
@@MorbidGod391 just tried using my Matter via Thread or Wifi devices via Google Home again after disconnecting the internet. As always: nothing works anymore. Funny thing is that Matter via Thread (using nest hubs as border routers) still work perfectly fine in home assistant after internet is unplugged. Google Home remains useless.
4:43 - I have an older gen Nest thermostat with temp sensors, I'd wonder about two things if I were to upgrade. 1) What's the footprint look like relative to the old models - in other words if I take the old one off the wall, and put the new one on, will it cover the same hole in my my wall? 2) I also have six existing temperature sensors. The old model maxed out at six of them. Does this new one let you use more than six at once? Additionally, will it work with the older temperature sensors?
I tried using nest smart feature on 3rd generation thermostat, it doesn’t take outside temperature into consideration, it should have an option to get outside temperature with a sensor.
Don't think the excitement over the Nest redesign is warranted. This is a huge step back in terms of design IMO. 😕 The physical knob on the Nest was some top-notch design. What a loss to abandon that.
Google home hubs are basically unusable at this point. Wouldn't be buying any smart home tech from Google, they have proven they will decrease in usability over time.
I doubt it, there's absolutely no reason to watch videos at 120 Hz. Most videos you're watching are under 30 Hz. But I'm sure they will offer a streamer pro at double the price with double the storage and nothing else
i got the 1st nest, but not sure i every looked at it and said "I should up date it" ... and honestly IF I was told tomorrow it wasn't supported, I'd get a different brand or a non-internet connected one.
The screen just looks way too big for what it's actually supposed to do. If it were billed as a home hub that *could* control your thermostat, that would be one thing. But it's a bit huge for a thermostat.
Double the price for only 22% more processing power in the streamer is really bad. I'm actually considering switching to Apple TV because the Chromecast performs so badly
I can't recommend this enough get Nvidia shield pro, I had the 2015 model until recently burned out last year. And even the 2015 model is better than most of the things out here today. Apple TV is all right but if you don't have anything else from Apple I recommend Nvidia shield pro.
Maybe second hand. New, it's not worth what they're charging. The Tegra X1 is 11 yrs old... and doesn't support many modern features (AV1 hardware decoding etc). Google should have given us slightly more to really justify forgoing the overly expensive shield however @@NeoSteelZero
Idk who's using thermostat, like I'm using my Samsung SmartThings, I can use my phone to control the temperature throughout the house, in every room, plus Samsung air conditioners have built-in dust sensors and temperature sensors. Like I don’t even need to get out of bed to raise the temperature in the room or turn off the lights or close the curtains.
No update to the nest protect. My google thermostat works. Not sure if I should run out and buy the latest and greatest. The could have included temperature sensors in a new nest protect.
STILL no info about whether or not a new base\mount is required for the new thermostat. Current Nest owners (I'm one) could really use to know if they'll need to install another mount. Why don't they talk about that????
The real question is will the Google streamer 4K rival the Nvidia shield pro. Even the first Nvidia shield TV streamer that came out all those years ago is still way better than anything on the market today.
I think it’s marmite for some, I like it cos it should have been the pixel the watch in size and not a teeny tiny pebble that I would need a magnifying glass to see the time or notifications but the Nest Learning thermostat has a nice size for its display and the bangle or digital bangle looks unique and smooth. The Nest & Streamer is missing one thing a Google Tensor chip.
Launching a really nice product only for US ... is something only Google could be capable of. :) The same they did with Gen3 thermostat ... being only available in UK and Germany ... So there is no wonder their sales are thriving.
They had 4 years and this is it? I'm a bit disappointed as the Apple TV is so smooth, fast, and ad free and constantly updated. A higher price point but still so worth it. They had all that time and could have put a Tensor G4 in this for example. I've never seen a company shoot themselves in the foot the way Google does. Known for killing off Google Pay for example, a direct name comparison to Apple Pay, all in favor of Google Wallet with less features. I don't get it!
Ecobee still beats the Nest, surprisingly. I have a first gen Nest and it died a while back and I got the Ecobee premium with an additional sensor. It has the occupancy sensor and humidity/temperature sensors.
Any word on audio formats like Dolby True-HD and DTS-X? hard pass if it only supports compressed Atmos. and any Ai Up-scaling? HDR10+? The Shield isn't looking worried yet...
This one looks more modern and more integrated into modern style homes. The older ones which i had don’t look modern anymore thus Imme buy this 4th gen :)
Little confused. Is it just a chrome cast? My Chromecast doesn't have a GUI, the background B Roll shows some sort of Google GUI. Is chrome cast a fireTV now? It wasn't 10 years ago, so I assumed it wasn't now.
You probably have, and are used to, the old Chromecast devices. The "Chromecast with Google TV" device came out in 2020, and it has a full UI and remote. This new streamer is just a more powerful version of that, and they're changing the name because it was obviously confusing for consumers (your comment proves that). This new streamer should be nice.
It's a streamer device like a fire stick but this one will run Google TV. And to be honest the specs aren't too impressive. It all comes down to how they optimize their own software
So Nest became a US only company? First no global wired doorbell and now no new thermostat outside the US? Guess my smart home will not be a Nest one anymore in the future… that google home dashboard will probably also never come to regular older Google TVs although it would be very easy to do so 😢
The whole google hardware lineup feels like a missed oportunity for years now. I still use 4 Google Home Max speakers and even though they still sound really good, the Google Assistant is getting worse and worse and is in dire need of an upgrade.
Will it work with the Nest App? I have tons of nest products and the last 2 cameras I bought would not be allowed to connect to the Nest App which really makes me mad. The Nest App is so much better than the Google home app. If this new thermostat doesn't work with the Nest App I'm not buying it
