We finally got our hands on a prototype of the new VPL-PHZ10 WUXGA laser projector, Sony's 4th generation laser projector. The VPL-PHZ10 is poised to shake up the current professional projector market - not just because it will be the most affordable high brightness laser projector, but because in may cases it will be at or below the cost of lamp-based projectors.
So how does it look? The short answer is incredible - even better than we had hoped for.*

The Panasonic PT-RZ570, how are black levels at lower brightness? Any visual light pumping with the 'Dynamic Contrast' option? Does it improve black levels and contrast?

In comparison to other business class projectors it is very decent. Compared to home theater or small theater projectors is is not very good. It is better than most 3-LCD business projectors but not compared to serious home theater projectors. Since this model is usually used for powerpoints and classroom use I cannot say how well it handles the light pumping as that would only really show up if watching a movie in a more light controlled environment which I have not done.

What do you think about the NEC NP-P502WL ? They say that one is good too?

Yes, its just lower resolution (1280 x 800 instead of 1920 X 1080). It will exhibit the same challenges most single DLP business projectors have in that it will trade off color accuracy for a brightness specification. The NEC is fine for most power points and data but you may want to consider a 3 chip system if you are looking to display photos or videos.

How do they get such a bright 5,000 lumens image in such a small cassis? I can't wait until this comes out. I was actually thinking of getting a 5,000 lumens projector on e-bay. I guess i'll wait for this now and buy it brand new since it's affordable. And I don't have to worry about diminishing light over time? That's good. No more bulb projectors.

Exactly how they do it we do not know at this point but it really is amazing. Keep in mind it's Sony's 4th generation of laser projector - and each generation has been improved upon. We do know that this generation has a new optical engine design.

Why is the NEC showing scan bars / noise scrolling up the picture but I don't see this on the Sony

The DLP color wheel causes visible banding to cameras, but most people do not see it with their eyes.

Do we know the official release date yet? Our group is debating whether to hold out for this projector, or to give in and get a high-quality lamp-based projector because our current one is fading fast.

We don't have an exact date, but Sony is indicating June deliveries for those who get their orders in by end of May.

While the VPL-PHZ10 is a great projector, and there are a few scenarios where it might make sense as a home theater projector, it does not have 16:9 aspect, nor does it have the black levels and contrast that the VPL-HW45ES has that are advantageous to a dedicated theater or media room. -Mike Bollinger

Correct, but keep in mind the W version is the WXGA version so not full HD quality, but great for the price.

But no mention of whether this is capable playing 3D BRays. Now that TV manufacturers have abandoned 3D capability, up until now, projectors seem to be where the 3D world will have to go in order to display 3D movies.

Correct, this is not a home entertainment projector but is used in conference rooms and classrooms where 3D is almost never requested or used.

HONESTLY IT HAS BETTER QUALITY OF LIGHTING AND DEEPER BLACKS THE LEFT PROJECTOR (NP-P502HL) WILL ALWAYS MAKE A PROBLEM LCD PANELS, SONY PROJECTOR FOR MORE THAN LASER, IT IS LCD AND THAT WILL BE A PROBLEM. THE BEST TECHNOLOGY FOR PROJECTORS IS DLP

So the NEC id s diifferent class of projector designed for bright areas like classroom and conference rooms with lights on. Color accuracy is not ideal for HT, movie, and gaming applications.

Panasonic does build a very good and reliable product! Until recently, however, the closest thing that they had that would compete with the Sony VPL-PHZ10, was the PT-RZ370, which is 1080p, and only 3,500 lumens, and the cost was about the same as Sony’s that was 5,000 lumens and 1920 x1200 resolution. Now that the PT-MZ570 is out, they do have a great projector that is 5,500 lumens and full WUXGA, with interchangeable lens options. -Mike Bollinger

The NEC NP-P502HL is a great classroom projector but not ideal in a controlled light space due to lack of deep blacks and accurate color due to the color wheel design for bright lights.

Sorry, we hoped this would only be seen as a "first look" and now have extensive experience with this projector and hope to do a calibrated and uncalibrated (since most classrooms are never calibrated) comparison in the future.
