Its a great spot up there and like yourself not been up for years. Will be intersted to see how you get on with the camera, as got one and sent mine back ;) Would have thought Murray would have got the new Scarp to try as he has been the main user of one for donkeys years.
What made you return it? 🤔 Yeah, Muzza would be the obvious choice, Andrew Park tagged him to a post on Insta about it. I'll message him in the new year.
@@WalkWithWallace Sent it back because at times gimble would jerk and stutter, so think mine had a defect. Also not too keen on the out of focus background. So between the two will stick with my Action 4 for now.
Excellent video Robin, Beinn an Dothaidh is a cracking hill. Early in my solo hillwalking career I also had a navigational nightmare on that hill, and after becoming lost in the fog attempted to get back down, but found myself on the top of the steep crags surrounding Coire an Dothaid. After much head scratching I resorted to blowing my emergency whistle, and almost immediately a guy appeared from the mist and asked if I needed help! He guided up to the summit and back down again, an absolute gent. He saved me that day, after which I resolved to learn to REALLY read a map. I did so, becoming an army map reading instructor, coming top in my class on the practical testing. My experience on Beinn an Dothaid is one I will never forget.
Just had a look at the map and can see where you were. Sounds very similar to our mistake but yours escalated a bit more. Ironically it was then I decided to invest in learning to read a map too. 😆 Must catch a lot of folk out.
Will look forward to the next one Robin. Just a shame they did not go ultra with features too such as zippable solid panel on the door, better pockets etc. Well done on showing us around though and giving us some ice!
It’s very easy to talk yourself out of a solo camp so good on you getting out. Talked myself out of a camp on Friday night and now regretting it considering the conditions I missed. It’s much easier to have the company as you mentioned. Remember doing Beinn an Dothaidh and getting lost myself. Those Bridge of Orchy Munros cover such a large area!
Cheers mate. I really appreciate your help. It's a headnipper to be sure. The only reason I haven't pulled the trigger on the Durston is the relatively high tax/duties. Saying that it balances itself out in comparison to the Scarp. I think it'll be the Durston. More hit and run friendly I'm thinking. Thanks again for your help. Safe trails. 👍
@@WalkWithWallace I’m doing the Berwickshire coastal path in a few weeks so I imagine it being pretty windy. I might put shrink wrap on the soulo’s zips if n I fancy getting a sleep that is 😂. Any recommendations for a good pitch on that route will be appreciated 👍🏼
Great video Robin, a lot of good things about the way you filmed that. I’m still loving the Notch li but always dreaming of something slightly bigger and tougher 🙈 ATB 🍻
Thank you for the feedback, as it was the Pocket 3's first video. Plus the HoverAir. Ah the Notch, I liked mine a lot, but naturally fell out of favour. Then I got the Durston. 😂
@@WalkWithWallace yeh they increased around 1 in lochaber. I was camped between aonach mor and cmd. Made cmd more interesting than planned the next morning.
That's a fantastic spot for a camp Robin. I was up there in mid February this year for a hike on a blue sky day with hardly any snow about. Looked a wee bit fresh the next morning in that wind. Great effort getting a summit camp at this time of year! 👍 Looking forward to your drone and camera reviews. ATB Derek
Cheers Derek. They're a fine pair of mountains and I left Dorain for a future camp. The morning wind chill was a killer. Need to do the wee drone review first.
@@WalkWithWallace it's been the bain of this past Summer, everyone I've taken time off work, it's been so windy, can't remember when I've had to change plans and muck about so much
Cracking camp. For the record, I get the same. Especially on the winter camps, can get a touch boring on your own. Always looking for someone to tag along with in winter. Plus as you know, safety in numbers. Always that wee niggle in the back of your head in winter
Glad I'm not alone in those thoughts. It's always nice having Kev a couple of metres away in his tent for a blether. Could take my dog on the solo trips but she feels the cold being a Staffy.
Wonderful video Robin and awesome views mate. We had a slight dusting on the high tops in the lakes last Saturday. We was up on Fairfield. All the best mate Dave.
Cracking wild camp mate. 😎👌 Looked a cauld one. No too cauld. Any colder then ma Lanshan might no cope. 😉 Should be awright in the 4 season inner. I mind going to the West Top anaw for the views and the peace. 😉 Scarp daft eh
Hi Robin, That was Munro number 13 July 1989 for me happy times! How was the Omni heat jacket? It's all change up there now I think the building were you could kip inside is now a cafe, I hope to get up in next few years to do some Etive climbs, hope batman IE Kev is on mend soon as you make a great double act! Kind regards Mark Shaw.
Cheers Mark. They're a fine pair of Munros, I need to go back for Dorain. 😁 The jacket is excellent for keeping warm when not moving, but it can be too warm when walking, it's not the most breathable. The hood could be a better fit too. Hopefully back out with Kev before the end of the year.
@@WalkWithWallace Yep that's the one thing that's making me hesitate, everything else about it seems spot on. Think it's time I binned gopro, just had enough of the niggles and pocket 3 plus osmo action 4 would do everything.
Wow Robin! A whole mountain to yourself, with those wonderful views! Tell me though, does making the film and talking to us help you feel less alone - or does it just not bother you? I think it might be a bit spooky for my liking.
Talking to the camera definitely helps, a lot is cut out of the final edit, particularly if I think I'm waffling. 4G signal helps, watch a bit of RU-vid or a podcast.
Great video Robin. As you found, the magnet flysheet door tie backs on the Ultra are hopelessly inadequate - and dangerous if you are cooking in the porch as the door material can come down so easily. An easy mod - much stronger magnets are available on e bay for less than a tenner for half a dozen or so - same diameter as on the tent. I just used some DCF tape to stick them over the existing magnets. Works well - but this really shouldn't be necessary and I had to do the same with my TT Notch when I bought that 3 years ago. I would hope Tarptent will note the problem and sort it for the future.
Cheers David, the magnetic tiebacks are woeful. I did feed this back and they said they’ve addressed it, with longer tiebacks. Tbh I prefer to have no magnets on my gear in case it plays havoc with my compass.
@@WalkWithWallace I've often wondered about the potential impact on my compass. I also had a water bladder for my day pack that had one to hold the tube to the rucksack chest strap. Took it off for that reason.
Stunning location Robin , proper shock to the system well it would be for me 🥶 , I know what you mean about sacking it off if you go solo 😂 I was going out this Thursday but the forecast is shite wet and orrible . Drone footage looked bob on to me and so much easier to carry and use. A bit fresh in the morn tho atb Dave
I was last wild camping in July, I was still in summer mode. 😂 Wet and orroble isn't exactly inspiring, unless you want some clickbaity titles and thumbnails. 😁 Drone is definitely acceptable.
Cracking did that Munro many years ago on a wonderful snowy December day the views across Rannoch moor from west tops were the best great to see you out and about thanks for the video …Kim Jong Young
That would definitely work, pity you have to do that, the toggles on the inner door are better than my original Scarp as it didn't have any toggles. Just two bits to tie it.
Aye. I had a quick look there but the prepay option on Kaviso seems to have vanished for now. I'll check back in a bit. Choking to get back oot. Thanks again.
Hi Robin. Great video as usual. I'm still stuck down the tent rabbit hole but have narrowed it down to the Scarp 1 or the X Mid 1. I'm mainly conflicted because it'll be for the Cape Wrath. If you had to pick which would you plump for. Nae pressure. Nae imminent rush. Cheers. 👍
Cheers Jack, re tents. If I was picking a tent solely for the CWT then hands down it would be the Durston. The Scarp is just a bit heavier and the rod ends take up valuable space in your pack. The Scarp is the better allrounder for summit camps, nights away.
I hold on to the P as well mate. Always feel better when it’s dealt with though!!😂 The Scarp tents seem really good. Almost pulled the trigger on one a couple months ago but went for terra nova laser compact 1 instead (on offer so was half the money). Happy with it. Swings and roundabouts I reckon. You got more winter camps in the planning? Cheers
Why do we do it? Even in the house I hold onto it, not as long as in the tent mind you. 💦 😂 Can't grumble if you got a heavy discount mate. No plans, just play it by ear with weather and if I'm solo or not.
@@WalkWithWallace Haha yeah I’m the same. Like a camel! Especially when you’re in your warm bag. Feels like a mission to get it sorted! Look forward to seeing your next adventure. Feel like I’ve not been out for ages so need to get that sorted.
@@summitwithstevie6934 aye got the GoPro Hero 11 still, touch wood it's a reliable one. They're two very different cameras, if you want a GoPro replacement, right now I'd get the DJI Action 4 over any GoPro.
Good work Robinski... Solo is good, holding on to pee is baaad... Thatz the trade off with these newer fabrics... they're bloody noisy... Oh... get me a code for the drine will ya please.. I sent aff for one and received a watch... Honest... 😂
Haha, cheers Jimbob. Must admit I'm more than happy with silnylon. Never been sold on DCF and the dury is out on TNT. Will test it a bit more though. 😁 I'll see what I can do. Lol
@WalkWithWallace nope. Up top. The second top, is covered in garnets, semi precious stones. Have to look closely at the schistic rock, but there are loads, red ones.
Good stuff Robin , good to get the first winter camp in . The conditions looked suprbos lol ...The scarp ultra looks sound , is the material similar to cubin ? Hows the DJI pocket 3 ? Pity i couldn't make it , got the plumber and the leak turned out to be a loose fitting on a radiator ...Nice one mate ..cheers Stevie
It's bit different, there's no weight saving benefits to the TNT Ultra, purely strength. Liking the Pocket 3 and the footage that came out of it. We'll hopefully get a camp in before the new year.
Been watching your videos for a fair while now, keep coming across them and recognise the voice each time so thought I would finally subscribe lol. Camera work/quality is top notch, what do you use?
@@WalkWithWallace can definitely see the difference, really good quality images which in turn makes it a real good investment, keep up the good work !! Hope to see more vids soon!
I do not like winter camping - but that setup looked quite cosy! I'd be interested to see how much extra weight you have to carry to camp snugly in winter.
Hi Robin, lovely vid and a cracking camp spot.⛺️👍 loved to hear your thoughts… I’m ditching my Hero11, fed up with it freezing and it’s crap low light capabilities. I’m undecided about the Osmo action 4 or pocket 3. I see you were using the pkt3 and quality looks excellent. Pros with the action 4 Waterproof Bomb proof If dropped Cheaper Pros with pkt3 Sensor size for low light Super stabilisation with gimbal New mic system. Just your honest thoughts on the pkt3 Thanks ATB Frank
How's it going Frank. 😁 I think you've nailed the pros and cons on both cameras. If it helps I've got no regrets buying the P3, the creative capabilites are endless but you need to ask yourself what would you use on the bad weather days if you sell the GoPro? I've got my H11 to fall back on, fortunately it rarely freezes. 🧐
@@WalkWithWallace thanks for your reply Robin, appreciated.👍 Really my biggest concern with the P3 is if I dropped it. I’ve got a habit of dropping the GP and as you know there bomb proof, whereas the P3 with the mechanical gimbal could spell trouble if dropped. Now a DJI Osmo action camera with a 1” sensor would be ideal🤣 Thanks again for the intel The jury is still oot just now.🤣 See what the prices are like come Black Friday
@@hikingwithfrank315 yeah, that one drop could be costly. I religiously put the P3 back in its protective case as soon as I'd finish recording, I thought it would be a faff but was fine. No need to attach a selfie stick or tripod. never dropped the Sony ZV-1. 🤞🏻 🙏🏻 Haha.
@@WalkWithWallace cheers Robin, I’m being swayed the more you reply🤣🤣 one more quick question. When you say no need for a tripod, what do you use for the walk towards/away from camera then.? Curious…
Hi Robin. One of your subs here. I see you got the rab alpine 600. Im thinking of getting a down bag to reduce pack size and a bit of weight. Ive got a winter synthetic one now, its warm but its a beast. So do you use ur rab as your main winter bag? Do you find it warm? Could you get away with wearing just base layer and staying warm in freezing temps? Finally dose the alpine shed feathers much? it kinda bugs me with feathers flying around the tent, so hopefully it dosent. Sorry for all the questions. Thanks man. B
Alright mate, the Rab Alpine 600 is a solid bag but it's not full on winter so I'd maybe feel cold spots in it if the temperatures dropped below -9°c. My mat only rated to -10°c. It would definitely do you the milder nights. I was warm last weekend, dropped to -4°c. Sadly all down bags shed feathers, even my PhD bag but the Rab isn't bad.
@@btryan1000 have a look at the Alpkit Pipedream 600 too, similar spec to the Rab Alpine 600. I'd tent either unless you want something that goes a few degrees lower still.
Looks amazing 😍 whats your opinion on the rab alpine 600, is it true to its temperature rating etc? Can get it in go outdoors for £212 with member card and also getting an extra 15%. Thinking its worth taking the plunge so i can get out hopefully late feb/early march
I’m really happy with the Alpine 600, although I’ve only had it down to -5c, I was toasty warm. It’s also tad bulkier than what I’m used to carrying but that’s to be expected. For £212 I’d take the plunge.
@WalkWithWallace thanks Robin! Yes sounds perfect. Don't think id want to go when it's any colder than-5 anyway 😂 all the best! Here's hoping for some decent weather windows soon
@WalkWithWallace thanks Robin! Yes sounds perfect. Don't think id want to go when it's any colder than-5 anyway 😂 all the best! Here's hoping for some decent weather windows soon
Nice one Robin back to a place you can actually see. Good of Tarp tent to send you the tent - but then again they learn from you guys. Certainly an issue there with the door. Apart from the wind an alright night I'd say - definitely a good descent with the frozen bog. Yeah, we like that. Well, good going. Mark
@WalkWithWallace You're not alone. I've two left on the mainland and one is Sgurr a'Coire Beithe in Knoydart so reckon will be Munros and the odd Graham until March or so.
@@Bikepacking I'll get clarification on those if or when I do a review. So far I prefer my original silnylon version however the stretch of the TNT material is superior and it doesn't absorb water. Trade off is pack size and noisier in the wind.
@@WalkWithWallace so it packs smaller .. ??? Dam it noisier in the wind that not good one reason I decided against hillbrugh tents to loud …but i see then dont offer a choice of inner for that model
