Here in Ireland 🇮🇪 the new i5 starts at, wait for it €91000 . Even the bog standard 520i petrol is €72000 . WOW . I have a 2019 530e and was going to change but this i5 is €30000 more than I paid for my car 4 years ago . I’m out BMW 😢
I know mate.. I bought a used 2022 1L 100 HP Audi A1 for €32k which can be bought in the UK for 8k cheaper. I can only imagine what it’s like when you go up the price. Ireland is a ripoff for buying cars 💀
They aren’t aiming at the purchase market. They are aiming at the company car market. BIK tax on EVs saves the employee loads of money and meet companies Green targets.
BMW is getting serious with EV´s - their new platform strategy is very smart - their design language is unique (from ugly to get better) - the i5 looks different then anything else on the road quite good.
@@arturo468 its coming from everywhere - we produce electricity at home, we need solar panels on each and every home, along the highways, wind - thats more then enough. But yes it should not be coal or oil of course.
Oh, I just cannot get enough of titles of the 'can this beat Tesla' - variant... Sigh... I have an i4, and while I admit the rear seat can feel a bit cramped if the front seat is far back, but it's really not a small car! Oh, about the i5 Touring. I love my hatchback on the i4, having my previous two cars been sedans. i4 is the best!!! ;-)
It is more important to look at smaller and cheaper electric cars, but it is not your fault that new big and expensive electric cars are constantly coming out on the market, so another like from here. However, that doesn't change the fact that you also do well in this video, so from here one more like 👍
Next 3-5 years only expensive cars will appear. The EV technology will become meaningfull after they harvest the big money from the people who are eager for big screens and ambient ligth on the grill. Perhaps in Europe it will take more time, since here the people must show they can afford such funny expensive toys, but on the other hand exactly such cars are the reason rational people don't like EVs, because they are expensive, heavy and slow to charge (expesive also)
Lowest spec version ‘starting’ at £73,000 and we all know any BMW will need the options list raided so that’s going to be closer to £80,000. They really have seen you coming.
Not to bad, actually. Quite a lot of base spec. Electric seats as standard for example. But realistically, M Sport is a minimum, so at least 76k. But then again, how much is an Audi etron GT or Model S?
just don't order it or switch it off... My stepdad has an A class and moans about the ambient lighting constantly. when I suggested he turned it off he said "I paid for it, why would I turn it off" strange mentality.
I'm a long time 5 series fan and have been waiting for an i5 for a long time. BUT, this looks a bit too much like a Skoda (especially with the blacked out illuminated grill option) that makes it not look special enough for that price. I do hope the M model is called an Mi5 though...
Instead of having shortcut buttons to access functions on the touchscreens, how about losing those screens altogether and instead just styling an attractive looking interior with physical buttons for all functions. You know, like we used to have before everyone demanded their car interiors looked like an Odeon multiplex. Large screens just make any interior look catastrophically bad (see Tesla) but manufacturers love them because they are CHEAP.
I have an I4 and I just don't see this car as that much better at the price point and specs they are showing. It still looks great and I'm sure it will be amazing for the extra leg room in the back. But I'm keeping my I4.
I’ve been driving 5 series for last 20 years and like the new i5. But those prices are just over the top nowadays…I’m probably out and now looking at alternatives with better value for money in the premium class, including NIO.
@@phuketexplorer you are right. - just holding sensors, a bit of cooling still (much less though) and showing the company logo - and a crumble zone if there is an accident
I'm not sure how tall Ginny is, but it does look like a rather large car, but I guess for this segment thats what the punters want. With you all though.. YAY!!! a BMW with a sensible grill! Cheers for the walk around, there are certainly some really interesting and as you point out fun features.
Not sure what the fixation is with quoting charging speeds, as in the real world there's so many factors that reduce from the maximum rate that the car can theoretically receive
I have been looking forward to seeing this car but it just doesn’t do it for me. Can’t work out what it is, perhaps the side cills to hide the batteries. Lots of plastic on front and back as well. Might look better in the real world for me perhaps.
The only beef I have with this design is the usage of piano panels on the outside of the car. Piano panels are so overtly sensitive, I wish the person that came up with the concept would be rolled in tar and feathers. It’s not sustainable in any way on the aftermarket. The rest of this i5 is amazing though.
Are you kinding me? Tesla's intriors are covered in padded leather, suede, and wood grain. Honestly just as good as a BMW interior. Far less plastic in a tesla than a kia or toyota
Just because you slap on "supposedly" nice material doesnt mean it is a good design. They have to be sculptured and have character. Tesla literally just slapped them on without much character and thoughts in the name of minimalist design. Thats probably why Lucid CEO left Tesla and created a much nicer car.
@@rnrnrkrk994 Sculpted? Sounds like you are just making up bs. I just pulled up a side by side comparison between model 3 and a bmw interior and the main differences are plastic vents, plastic buttons, and unnecessary engine guages in a BMW. All things that I personally feel make the interior worse. BMW does have more leather color options but not something most people care for.
And to be fair, I'm not a huge huge fan of BMW design either. I hate the look of slapped on display. But other aspects like door panels and ambient lighting are much more thought out than a Tesla
4:31 What's going on with BMW and it's huge frontal overhangs lately ? The I7, I4 and new X1 all got really long noses and now even the new 5 series, why ? In the side profile it looks like a rear wheel driven Mazda now and not like a sporty Beamer with crispy proportions.
they did a great job on the design of this. there isn't any outlandish bits like the IX and the I7 takes some getting used to (though it has grown on me a lot ) this car looks slick. except of the back? that back looks like a honda or maybe a VW it ruins an otherwise handsome car. too bad i probably wouldn't be able to afford this lol
Some cool, clever technology and a class interior. What does that interior add over and above the 4 series in terms of space and comfort? It would have to be a lot, because in saloon form it's a big barge without all the practical benefits of the yet to come estate.
For sure I expect it to have more space for the backseat passengers, as it's quite cramped in the back of an i4. And the ride comfort will probably be better too.
They say the i4 seats five, but it really seats three comfortably (if the backseat passenger is fine with straddling the battery hump). There's a dearth of legroom directly behind the front seats.
@@BogeyTheBear I sat in the back of an i4 yesterday set to my driving position. it was absolutely fine at 5 foot 9 and I had plenty of legroom and just enough headroom. I can imagine 6 footers struggling. but people of average height or kids will have zero issues back there.
Nice to see a front grille but the bmws that are in my price range look terrible. Oh, and the charge ports need to be on the rear left or it's an automatic no anyway.
Prices too high. EV production in Germany slowing down due to high depreciation and early adopters satiated. Its too big for UK as current 5 series (which I drive) can struggle with multi storey car parks etc. This whole vid just sounded like a love in from BMW.
4:30 What's with the massive frontal overhang ? 😮 It's an EV or rear wheel driven car, why is the nose so long ? It looks like a Mazda or Toyota from the side, not like a dynamically proportioned BMW.
This car looks great and it's amazing how quickly the car can be charged. But this is all fine and well if the charging network can support it. At moment, in the U.K. (from my experience); the charging network is abysmal. The infrastructure is not keeping up with the number of electric cars on the road. Moreover, we need more 50kWh or higher charging points.
Tesla's already charge faster than this BMW. You get about 320km/200mi in 15 min of charging on a Tesla V3 supercharger which are located all over the place. Honestly not impressed by this attempt by BMW at all. The model 3 beats it in virtually every way at a lower price
There is also a petrol-powered version that is much cheaper, the 540i xdrive, I think. With that one you don't have to play games on your iphone while waiting to charge-up.
Way too expensive, and can we stop pretending EV versions of ICE cars are intentionally similar? It's a bad thing this is a compromised car and doesn't have lots of interior space or EV efficiency, etc
I suspect most buyers will get the dealer to set it up for optimal 'normal' driving and never touch the screen menus - let alone any of the silly gadgets.
£75k for the base car with no options and £98k for the M models without options. This isn't a Tesla rival, and if the i4 hasn't managed to topple them this certainly wont. The Model S/X sell in tiny number globally compared to the 3/Y.
I drove 5 series BMWs for 15 years because I thought they were the best cars for performance/price/style. Switched to Tesla when model S launched. This won't tempt me back. Crystal dial? FFS!
@@okkimakki Most EV cars range from 8 to 10 years, or about 160,000 km. If age is usually the unit of measure of life of a device, this is not the case with a lithium-ion battery. You can rely on mileage, but that is not enough to know the battery life of electric vehicles. Circumstances on the road and driving style also affect mileage. Thus, it is best to measure the life of an electric car battery by its charge cycle. On average the lifespan is between 1,000 and 2,000 charging cycles.
@@fa5234 you got an reliable source for that? Most hits on Google says 15-20 years, or 320.000 km. And then only some cells will need replacing, not the entire battery.
I do like the new G60 range, but I'm annoyed that it looks too much like the 2 series and I've always purchased the 5 series because the 5 and 7 are the correct BMW's compared to the others.
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 Yeah google image search the backend of the 2023 2 series and the G60. I want people with the untrained eye to tell the difference between the 5 and the 2
China will demand karaoke. As this is not a dedicated EV platform i imagine there is a tunnel in the rear along with that long bonnet, impacting the 5th seat comfort. Sorry you never got a chance to tell us about rear room. Thanks for the video.
Because they will sell non-ev versions. Likely to have a tunnel for the back seat area also, for the same reason. That is the problem with non-dedicated EV platforms.
Really? That’s ridicules for any company to do that. But that will,be the future. I heard that if you want to unlock your car remotely or use some free features we get now some companies will require you to pay a monthly fee.
75000 Pounds Sterling - what's it going to "topple" - the Tesla S which is no longer sold in the UK? BMW are playing in a whole different price segment.
i4, i5 Failed , rear seats still got a huge non sense Bump.... But well, they can At least make i4 same interior as i5. I just want a HatchBack elecetric car
I’d say not “pig ugly” but “kinda ugly”, the front still bulges out, the grill is still swollen with a large front overhang. To me it’s still a bit in your face, I took out a massive loan/lease so everyone thinks I’m important styling, people with real money prefer subtle more sophisticated styling usually.
Sorry, but the National Grid can't cope with more EVs without the lights going out. +20 years maybe, but bonkers in the near future. I'm keeping my diesel until I can't - and then I'll buy a petrol 4X4. Dream on ...
Yes in 20+ years...in Germany about 2,6 Mio Cars were sold in 2022. If all would be BEV Immediatelly, it would take 20 years to replace all german Cars. For sure similar in UK. Since only about 20% BEVs are sold at the moment...it will take 40 years and more. If the grid is not improved in this long time... BEVs Fans and BEV Haters talk as if EVs are tommorow at 100%...no this will not happen!!! It will take decades. Even Norway with 90% EV Sales still has 80% ICEs in Usage.
This car competes with Tesla Model S, a car that came out 11 years ago. BMW took a long time to come alongside. Now, how many BMW i5's will be sold in 2023? And how many Tesla Model S's? What are the ranges? Does it update at least monthly over the air? So far, you ONLY talked about female things (women talk interiors). What about the hard tech things?
History has shown that cars that are listed as “Tesla killer” or “Tesla replacements” or Tesla beater” end up not doing well, or have failed so hard they have been discontinued. EVs are the next evolutionary step in automobile advancement. E.Vs are competing against liquid fueled vehicles.
The I4 didn't hit quite right with the "grill" I don't think it looks good and yet I have feeling it can grow on you but the I5 is just beautiful to begin with
The headline of "Tesla Killer" or "Will this car destroy Tesla?" is getting old. No, nobody will. They need to stop competing with Tesla and do their own thing.
looks great, but Tesla still a fair way ahead in efficiency. companies need to focus on that. I'm not Emerson Fittipaldi or Lewis Hamilton, so I don't need lightening fast etc... I need fast charging, everywhere and great range
It does. Countless auto reviewers have commented on it. The i4 edrive40 is the best handling EV this side of a Porsche Taycan. The Model 3 is set up as a "best fit" for all conditions. The i4 M Sport has adjustable dampers with Comfort and Sport settings. So better on pot-holes and speed bumps when in Comfort, and better through corners when in Sport.
This 5 Series is high like a Bus! Next model will be same plattform as the X-Models?! All of this black plastic will make it look cheap even it is very expensive, and it will be scratchy very soon.
but what BMW still missing, is the cost of electrical cars is much lower than ICE cars.. but they forget to set the price right.. That car cost dobbelt the Tesla.
Good review of a nice looking car. I don't understand how she can be so excitet about efficiency mode, I mean all EV's have it, and the 25%, well that just mean there is alot of power getting lost i normal driving mode.
