zensei999 You must be new to audiophile headphones and the audiophile world, that cable and others are made out of extremely conductive materials and have VERY good quality, also, the majority of those jacks have solid gold plating so that would amp up the price quite a bit as well.
Harman Kardon's headphones aren't very good, the UE9000 sounds too similar to the UE6000, which sounds pretty terrific for a $200; likewise to the M-80's. There should be no reason why the D600 should be compared to the aforementioned headphones and I'm inclined to agree with you. I'm sure they sound great, as I'm eager to try the D600 myself vs Mad Dogs. The D7100 on the other hand is a different ordeal. You're paying twice the cost of the D600 and the charts on Innerfidelity look horrendous.
I've read that the D7100 isn't nearly worth the price upgrade from the D600. Sad Face. I wonder what Denon's reasoning behind the new line was because I've read that their new line just doesn't match the "legendary" sound from their previous line (D2000, 5000, 7000). As for the appearance, personally I greatly prefer the more classic audiophile look with the full-on wood earcups than the new urban-style, but that's just my 0.02.
I've read a lot of what has been said at Head-Fi and although they sound good, the price jump from the D600 to the D7100 doesn't justify the difference in sound. The measurements at Innerfidelity look horrendous for a $1200 headphone too.
Well.. i had them on my head yesterday and staight from iPod 5gen pretty poor soundstage with boomy bass. Even worse from Fiio E11! Then i had plug them to Denon PMA A100 integrated amp = amazying!!!!! This are great hedaphones with great soundstage and awesome bass performence. They just need good amp. Not powerfull but sonicly talented. Somehow my D5000 plays superb with Fiio E11 while d7100 alre really poor on that. D7100 on PMA A100 was better than D5000 on any amp. Strange, wright?
I'm just comparing them because they're geared towards the same market. The h/k actually sounds quite good but comfort was horrible, the UE is more comfortable but none of the gimmicks work well enough (skipping/hissing in BT and unbalanced sound in NC), even some slight channel imbalance in passive mode was thrown in as *bonus*. I'm not defending the 7100 as I haven't tried it, but I'm glad we share the same view about the 600, some ppl just lump them together and bash them both.
I think we can stop debating about the looks. Clearly Denon had something in mind by ditching the classic Dx000 styling. As far as sound goes, I've tried the harman/kardon NC, UE9000, M-80, etc. and I can't help but laugh at the people who think the UE or V-Moda line sounds better than the D600. They must be either trolling or deaf, or both. Momentum I didn't bother because of size. Comfort wise the D600 also wipes the floor, all the others hurt the top of my head after 1.5hr or so, 4hr for D600
At the $1200 price point, these headphones are extremely overpriced. The Ultrasone Edition 8, Audeze LCD-2, Beyerdynamic T1 and the Senn HD 800's all out-perform these. Also, btw, that's not an aluminum or magnesium shell. It's PLASTIC. The build quality is nowhere near the similarly priced german-made competitors. You'd have to be crazy to choose these over the D600's considering how similar they are in everything but price. Great unboxing though.
if you have the right amp, the HD800 certainly doesn't lack bass. I have Woo Audio WA22 with EML 5U4G, Ken Rad 6SN7 and TS 7236 tubes, its audio heaven. I have the LCD2, its way too heavy t wear for long time and sound too dark with alot of bass compared to HD800. The HD800 is a very very good balanced headphone if you have the right amp.
hello hifiguy528 i hope you respond to this i am looking for headphones to use everyday like at school and stuff and i am wondering what is the best headphones for me to get i listen to all kind of music kinda from frank sinatra - musicians nowdays im thinking of headphones between 1-200 dollar what do you recomend
Me too, I own the D7k, and find the new D7100 very ugly. Too much plastic. The D7k looks way more classy. Denon's new design and materials for $1100 is like trying to sell a beats looking "young" headphone to an audiophile crowd where majority of the people should prefer the old classy look.
hey man i just subscribed i been looking at headphones reviews for quite sometime now and i constantly come across your reviews on youtube suggestions and thoughts even on head-fi.org and i have mad respect for you and your opinion i appreciate the reviews
When is your review for the Denon AH-D600 coming out? no rush, just waiting so i can decide what to buy. Either Denon AH-D600's or Sennhiser HD650's, which one is better for electronic music? Classical? Thanks Hifiguy, I love your videos.
@satfgk, Agree Sennheiser Momentum is one of the best sounding portable, but have you heard the Beats Studio 2013? Tested them today side by side with my HD600, simply stunning noise cancelling and balanced sound!
Hey hifiguy528 i was wondering what to get the fanny wang 2000 or should i get the pioneer 1500 please anwser fast im thinking bout buying my headphones in a week!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
The Denon AH-D7100 was my first high end headphone, I like Denon and use a Denon surround receiver but the cheap plastic design of the AH-D7100 has really aged badly.
do you need an amp to drive these headphones? how is the bass on these, i have beats and want to upgrade to something with better sound quality but i still want heavy bass.
And people say Beats are overpriced... never will understand "audiophiles" that bitch about the price of Beats yet they spend thousands on their equipment+headphones...
I have been looking for a new headphone because the headphones I currently have lack bass. Can you please do a review on the new audio technica ath ws99 solid bass?
Did see these just as I was making a decision which to buy...glad I got the d7000 just as they stopped making them..*apple certified* ?? uhh that says a lot..
Dang! These are some pricey headphones! At this price point, are people really going to be using these straight out of the headphone jack of an i-device?? Most people who can throw down this kind of money for headphones will more than likely be using a decent headphone amp. Those are some very handsome headphones!
agreed, these look like a joke in comparison, a $1000 dollar headphones is supposed to be used with your $1000 dollar amp and $1000 dollar DAC at you house, using it with your iphone... idk doesn't sound right, kinda like Ultrasone's ED8... but those look really beautiful IMHO, not sure about these
I would buy them but do they sound great for the 1200 that you spend in reality I don't give 2 shits about the accessories I care about the headphones and how they sound so are they worth it cuz I am trying to find the best headphones ever
The ear pads are worthless, I've had to replace mine twice at $200 per set. But! These are the best closed cans out there. 50mm edgeless drivers. They get going after 200 HRS burn in time. With a good head phone amp, sound is comparable to the front row of a rock concert.
I've not heard a better portable headphone than the Sennheiser Momentum. This includes the D600, D7100, K550, Focal Spirit One, Amperior and many others. The Momentum is a lot better than the D600, actually.
But overpriced for what you get. My D600 is clearly inferior to my cheaper Momentum and, from memory, so is the D7100. The Momentum has a more balanced sound with tighter bass, smoother, more natural mids and treble.
I hear that these are not good compared to the D7000. I wish Denon wouldn't push the new line so hard, the price of the old Denons are extremely high, but the new ones just don't have the awesome value of the old ones.
Audiophile headphones that don't need a fancy amp to sound? Mmm that's interesting,i'd like to know how it feels like to have 1200$ headphones in my head playing music from my iphone...
Neither. Get an Audeze LCD-2, a Beyerdynamic T1 or look for a used D7000 instead. The HD 800 and D7100 are extremely different in sound but neither sound natural or neutral.
These are NOT the best headphones ever..And not really worth the price tag..They are great !! DOnt get me wrong.. But +1k for headphones? These arent quite there
I really like Denon, but the fact that they put their premium 1200 dollar headphones in the same case, color an all, as their 450 dollar pairs is kind of stupid.
