SSL has just debuted its new DeEss plugin, and we've got the complete walkthrough on SonicScoop. It features a new "relative threshold" control to keep its sibilance control consistent, not matter how loud or soft your audio.
Charles Hoffman takes us through every knob and lets us hear it in action.
Big thanks to SSL for helping making this detailed look at their new plugin possible. Check out DeEss here: store.solidsta...

I just got the SSL De-esser with a Harrison vocal plug-in for a great deal. Both working well.

I’m glad people are still coming up with good solutions for sibilance control. It’s maddening to hear otherwise good content being ruined by a narrator or voice talent hitting S sounds so hard, it’s unlistenable. I’m looking at you, NPR!

Interesting. Seems like they’re bringing a couple new functions to the table. - Brightness & Clarity w/ one knob after taming sibilance - An adaptive threshold to “set it and forget it” - Blend of sibilance & full signal reduction - Oversampling (which is often not featured in de essers) 🤔Now I wonder if I can accomplish this with plugins I already have (Ableton FX Rack) or if this would be a useful/necessary purchase.

Great synopsis Collins! Let us know if you find a good workaround with stock tools. But often, I find a custom built tool enhances workflow a lot, even when more complex workarounds are theoretically possible. Thanks for the great comment. -Justin

@@SonicScoop Well as you can imagine haha, after doing this for years and investing so much money, you start getting a lot more judicious in spending haha I think the function of Ableton provides a visual workaround (effect racks & macros) but yes, I agree with you. A stylized tool is very convenient (and potentially worth it!) After thinking about this (in my honest opinion) the only thing I can think of that has an adaptive threshold & suppression response would be Soothe2 by Oek Sound. Configure the response curve of Soothe & there you go. Follow that up with a multi-band exciter/limiter for the top end and you would get pretty close to the results. Possibly better? Idk (Something like Tupe actually could provide pleasing results using the emphasis filter!) Ha! I might actually consider making this into an Ableton effects rack! The most attractive components to what SSL made tho (imo) is the adaptive threshold & compression, plus the brightness compensation. But let me know what you think!

Love the concept but the color scheme is a miss, especially considering it’s a visual tools sometimes, great sound though

Do I need to pay in order to buy an iLok USB?Because it doesn't accept my iLok it tells me to enter a redeem code

The "redeem" button is in the top right of the iLok app. You might have to be in "available licenses" tab to see it. I think it has a check mark or three dots on said button. A window will pop up with the same number of characters slots as your code. Hope that helps!

I believe Danny has some good pointers here that should work for demos and trials. The process should be the same. If you continue to have trouble, please contact customer support for SSL or iLok. Here’s SSL’s: www.solidstatelogic.com/support-page/contact
