Remember the 10 minute tune up from muscle mustangs? That’s pretty much the first mod my father and I always did. Then frame connectors, gears, driveshaft, & shifter. The Foxbody will always hold a special place in my heart after all the years of wrenching on them with my dad.

I just bought a 92' LX 5.0. I have to wait til tomorrow to go back and pick it up. I feel like a kid on X-mas Eve. Your videos are helping me pass the time. I have looked at dozens of Mustangs over the last year. Finally I found my car. My Brother and I are Fox guys. My late Father and I both worked at the Ford assembly Twin Cities plant. Dad had a sweet 66 Fastback he bought brand new straight out of the Navy. Ford {and UAW} provided our family and myself with a good life.

Everything you mentioned is spot on. My second mod was a short shifter with aluminum bushings. Shifting feel was on another level . Ended up with Ford Racing long block installed. I moded my LX over the years to the tune of 375 HP at the wheels (naturally aspirated) after aaaallll the bolt-ons imaginable were installed. . Wow what a ride. It sat on Eibach specifics and Bilstein at the corners chrome 18 inch Cobra R wheels. I could fill a couple pages. Great vid. Took me back :)

I have done 3 of these 5 things (subframe connectors, 3.73 rear end, and equal length shorty headers with a catless X pipe and magnaflow racing mufflers) and these 3 things made the biggest improvements of all. I am aware of the benefits of underdrive pulley and upgraded alternator but just haven't gotten them yet. Great video, spot on list

Thanks for insight.. I picked up a 92 GT Vert last spring. She had been sitting for about 5 years, good condition but needed TLC.. the only mod it had was Flowmaster mufflers. My first mods were the Maximum Motorsport full sub frame connectors, BBK rear upper and lower control arms, and MM K member. For me handling was a priority. I then continued with cold air intake (from fender) 3:55 gearing, and a full 5 lug front and rear disc swap w/ KYB/H&R shock/spring set up. I have a nice Bimmer but find myself wanting to drive her ('Stang) all the time. Now time for a little more speed.. She's a keeper and a looker and wouldn't trade her for nothing.

Your suggestion about the gears is spot on. I did cam, intake (84 carb car), headers and exhaust. I could tell a difference, but when I put the 4.10 in, it was like being kicked in the tail when I would mash the loud pedal. It was a bigger seat of the pants feel.

+1 on the gears. I had a new '93 Notch back in the day. The 5.0 scene was hot in the early 90's, and every one had the simple bolt ons...I sunk my money into a set of 3:55 gears and it was hands down the best money I have ever spent on ANY mod to this very day. The car was literally a different animal. Ahh, the good old days... Great video.

Each group costs more. I want to go fast. 1. Remove air intake silencer and add proper filter 2. Advance timing 3. Bypass EGR preheat 4. Remove screen on MAF sensor if you have one. 5. Adjust TPS sensor to in spec. Next 5 1. Cooler thermostat 2. Full synthetic oil 3. Colder ASF32C plugs and open gap 4. MSD coil (engine will nose over early if you don't especially with 4:11s...) 5. Underdrive Pulleys Next 5 1. Short throw shifter 2. Aluminum clutch quadrant 3. 373 Gears 4. Weld a bead between tack welds on front subframe upper/lower THEN add subframe connectors. 5. Headers and mufflers Next 5 1. Alernator 2. Electric fan 3. 1:6 roller rockers 4. Hone out stock throttle body 5. Box weld control arms I want it to handle now 1. Energy suspension bushings all over 2. Strut tower brace 3. Springs 4. New Shocks and struts 5. Low profile rims and tires I want it to handle better and hook now 1. Global west Trac link 2. Panhard bar and remove upper control arms 3. a bit more camber 4. Move battery to the back. Back to the engine. 1. Aftermarket heads 2. Aftermarket throttle body 3. Aftermarket upper/lower intake 4. Aftermarket cam 5. higher capacity injectors and MAF 6. Fuel pump By now the car will be known as a serious threat on the street, Drive around Camaros in the corners and handle them with ease in a straight line.

My list from having an 89 GT and a 2k GT and plenty of Mustang friends... 1)gears. Don't fear the gear. Don't be afraid of 4:30s if it never sees the highway 2) Taurus alternator. It's a cheap junkyard swap. It is the 130a 3) Taurus electric fan. More go-fast junkyard goodies 4) Long tubes with full exhaust. Save up if you are broke, no sense in building the exhaust around a shorty set up only to go long tube later. 5) Steeda Tri-Ax. This makes a world of difference over that stock worn out shifter. Very solid mechanical feel. Stop bolts let you bang gears without trashing the forks. Other good mods are, Upgraded brakes, H/C/I, bigger throttle body, larger intake with bigger MAF, lightweight flywheel and driveshaft, uppers and lowers, real performance springs (not eBay "slammed" springs), CC plates, Steeda ball joints, drop tie rods. Past that you are adding more than basic mods. That list will be a good start into getting your Mustang respectable but not overdone. Over the top has been done before. People respect clean.

Good video. Subframe connectors are really necessary, even for completely stock cars. When I put mine on, I noticed the difference even going over speed bumps and crummy roads. Before, the whole car would lurch and creak. Feels a lot more solid now. Next chassis mod after subframes would be torque box reinforcements: Wild Rides Battle Box or something similar. I did these at the same time as upper/lower control arms.

prushimush Man I agree 100%, mine was like a new car. What subframes did you go with?
@prushimush
@prushimush 6 лет назад
I ended up getting LMR's house brand full length subframe connectors. They're full length weld in connectors with seat platform braces. I think they may be a little thinner than MM subframes, which I probably should have coughed up the extra $60 for, they are nice. I boxed off the ends with sheet metal before putting them in. Old foxbody cars(that's all of them nowadays) suffer from metal fatigue, saggy unibodies, and even rust in my case, which further harms the factory-weak unibody. My fox body isn’t starting rite now because when I bought it couple weeks ago it came with a sound system electric fans and a alarm system, I need to buy a new alternator is the 130 amp enough or should I go with 200 amp???? Couple days ago I removed the alarm system since I don’t need it

If you have an AOD car, along with the gears is a reprogrammed valve body, so the trans will let you upshift gear by gear, and more importantly will allow the car to stay in OD without shifting down at WOT! Now you can use those 4:10's!

I've always figured, suspension Wich should include, shocks, springs, subframes and control arms. If you can get them all and get them installed. Good tires, and exhaust. Just the basis for a start. Agood handling car. They got power from the start. As time and money allows you can move onto adding more HP.

Only mod from your list that I have not done is the 130 AMP Alternator. I replaced my upper & lower control arms as well. The 3.73 gears on my AOD made the biggest difference.

My main mod to 1990 notchback was tear stock heads off for port, polish, 5 angle valve job and mill 30 thou at E.T Automotive Garland Texas. Flow masters and off road exhaust too. 3 to 4 car gain to 80 over other mustangs with simple bolt ons. Would love to get another stock one and just do 3:55 gears and 4-5k Paxton supercharger if they still have those. Then need subframe connecters forsure. Centerline wheels to finish off.

Always been a ford guy all my life but yeah I’m a new foxbody owner. 1986 Mustang gt convertible w 86,000 miles all stock and clean. First mods I did: plugs, wires, cap rotor, coil. Tinted windows. Air intake headers.. taking her slow and easy. So many damn mods that need to be done: shifter, rear gears, underdrives, tires, sway bars, coolant hoses, bigger front disc conversion, drum to disc rear etc.

I always hear the first mods you should make to a car is better brakes and better tires. There’s probably a good reason for that.

Any suggestions on where to get those subframe connectors installed? Do u think a local exhaust shop might be a place to start? Not knowing any wellders in my area, i just dont know where to have them welded on! Ive got the max motorsports full length for my 98 Cobra. But no luck getting them installed yet. Agreed about the fox body! Those 5.0s were the best of that era! I still regret selling the one i owned (88 LX 5.0) in the 90s after losing my license.

I have an aod 92 hatch and I put new cam, new speedo gear, shift kit, solid cam n lifters, new alternator, 3.73 gears, underdrive pulley, in process of getting new twin 40mm turbos, GT40 heads, shorty headers, and later will be new pipes, new front brake system (is a 5.0 in a lx car) and I’m only 16 and have bought everything myself. Any suggestions on future things?

You forgot lowering springs,add that to the suspension list. I would have added a short throw shifter(night and day for me)and brake upgrade(5 lug conversion optional). Ive had 3 foxes,just bought another one full bolt on. I had a bone stock to the silencer 92 notch i bought back in 2003 with 64k original miles for $2600,i got the deal of a lifetime and still my fav car to this day.

I had a 1990 GT with Canfield stage 3 ported heads, Holly systemax port matched to the heads, Z-303 cam 75mm mass air, 75mm throttle body which my intake was ported to 75mm, stock. 308 gears. I never get a chance to run it at the track though. What do you think the car made HP wise and with traction what do you think it would have ran in the quarter mile? Oh, it was a stick car.

@joebeez1287
@joebeez1287 6 лет назад
How about a video on welding in subframe connectors? I'm getting ready to do mine, but I understand to do it properly, you need the wheels to have weight on them - requiring a lift. Any shade tree mechanic ideas for keeping the suspension under load, and yet have enough room to weld in the subframes? I would really hate to have to farm that out - I've done everything else myself.
