Man, watching you young servicemembers produce these vids for each other .... advising each other ..... well, sometimes nowadays I may get a bit worried about the state our United States is in right now .... but when I see you wonderful people doing wonderful things with tools and equipment we only dreamed of back in my day .... it fills me with great joy! Dude, I soak that stuff up like a sponge! Thank you! :)

Quart size Ziploc bags and you can save space without bringing boxed items, like the oatmeal, keep them in the individual bags and squeeze out the ziploc air and presto...especially deployment which you need several months of essentials. Open the pod bag of laundry and squeeze out the air. Save the ziploc bags for opened or unfinished snacks to preserve and extended shelf life or use them for anything that starts leaking like shampoos, etc. Always have a few quart size ziploc bags. Nice video.

You are good. I would be proud to serve with you. DE Bradley, 1968-1970. Lotta nice touches on your rack. My happy place was my rack, auto cassette deck, 120 volt dc converter to 12 volt, headphone Jack soldered in mounted to overhead rack. Nothing back then like today. Film caught up with us a week after the first moon walk. WESTPAC 2x. Very good time of my life

If you were in a workcenter with a tight group of people, you could also store stuff under the deckplates. Yes, the meals can often be bad at times, folks would bring a few cases of cup of noodles and store them where they could. For those that have never been underway, I have seen milk with lumps. If you are working a late shift, you can miss midrats, if they have anything. So, yes, the cup of noodles can be a nice thing to have.

The number 1 thing I needed was highwater flip-flops. At least 1 or 1.5-inch soles. I needed them to keep the scum in the shower from oozing up between my toes. The scum was so bad I actually found a High School ring buried in the shower floor. The showers were disgusting on all 3 carriers I was on in the 70s. Number 2 would be Gold Bond powder. When you get hot and sweaty every day working the Flightdeck jungle rot was a serious problem. Without talcum powder, I would have suffered.

AGREED! We didn't really have too bad of issues on the small boy with shower scum, luckily but if the rocking wasn't allowing the water across the drain it would build up for sure. Powder and powder spray can definitely be a life saver from a world of hurt

I wanted to ask about sleeping so close together, does anyone snore? Bc I do have a snoring problem and seem that would total piss someone off others after everyday retiring to sleep
@owensmatt
@owensmatt 2 года назад
Good question; YES, ALOT of people snore in berthing and it does get very annoying. I can almost guarantee there's someone that is even worse then your snore. It's surprising how many people snore when they sleep. A lot sleep with their ear protection or many get seen by medical to help with the snoring.
@dereksuddreth8672
@dereksuddreth8672 2 года назад
What's even MORE ANNOYING than snoring is some IDIOT catching crabs on Liberty in your berthing compartment and NOT GOING TO SICK CALL before it spreads to someone else close by. We had 60+ guys in forward berthing and luckily no one on the port side caught them. However, 3 sailors did, and everyone had to tie off their mattresses topside to be sure the critters were eradicated....

The ship store on board a CG is very small. There's certain snacks you can purchase but once they're sold out (aka in a day or two) you have to wait until the next replenishment of supplies and hope they ordered more ship store supplies to be on that supply ship. It's safe to always prepare and get your own before relying on the ship store.

My son is right about to head out to the fleet to Virginia. I'm trying gather some items for him to take. Real question and pls be honest. How often do people steal & do fights often break out because of this? Do people ever get reported for stealing? I heard that they even break into locks? Will I be able to mail my son items while he's on a ship? Will there be communication or will he be allowed to have his personal phone. Can he have a lil palm size speaker out there? Are laptops allowed? Will he be able to have his own vitamins/supplements out there? Is there any way of him being able to purchase things out on the fleet that he may need? I heard restroom are pretty disgusting or so are the showers. Can he take his own medicine like Tylenol or ibuprofen out there? Will he need a pair or two of civilian clothes? How do yall do it to prevent motion sickness? Sorry for so many questions but I'm trying to get as much information as possible.
@owensmatt
@owensmatt 2 года назад
I will make a video covering all of this; thank you for the comment.
@wighty5860
@wighty5860 Год назад
1. Theft does happen, the extent will depend on the ship. Most of the time, it's from people leaving stuff out in the open or unlocked. If it comes to breaking locks, normally the ship will take that pretty seriously. I haven't seen locks being broken off on any destroyer I've been on. Larger ships might be different. 2. You can send mail when your son is out to sea. How often they get it will depend on what type of ship he's on and their operational schedule. For us destroyer/cruiser Sailors, normally this will happen in port unless we're sailing with a carrier. Expect any mail to take a long time to arrive. I've had my parents send me snacks while on deployment. I even had a laptop mailed to me onboard while on deployment. 3. All Sailors will have computer access and a ship email. So long as the emails don't get out-of-hand there's usually no problem using it. Just be aware it is a government system, government accounts and government hardware; they can take a peek at any emails sent. 4. Speakers/laptop. Both are allowed onboard. Any electrical cord needs to be safety checked before use. Depending on his NEC, his space might not allow any device that is wifi/blu tooth capable due to security concerns. Many people use speakers while they are cleaning out in the passageways. 5.Heads (restrooms/showers). Berthing cleaners "should" happen every day where the whole space gets swept and swabbed. How well this is done varies greatly by ship and berthing. If he has good leadership in the berthing, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. 6. All ships have a Ship's Store for Sailors to buy a variety of things: Snacks, drinks, uniform items, toiletries, ball caps, belt buckles, etc. How much variety and how big the store depends on his ship. On a carrier, it's almost like a 7/11 size. On a destroyer, it's probably 10 feet by 15 feet in size. 7. Meds. OTC meds aren't really frowned upon. I would keep it to something like motrin or tynenol. But ship's medical can get them a few pills if needed; including cold/fever/decongestant type meds. Motion sickness pills/patches can also be handed out. Vitamins/supplements are also ok. 8. If there are no planned port visits, civilian clothes aren't really necessary. For deployments, yes but he needs to keep in mind of limited space. For me, I usually take 2 pair blue jeans, 2 pair of shorts, 5 shirts (include one or two polo shirts just in case), 5 pair of "civilian" socks, 5 sets of PT clothes w/ socks, one pair of out-in-town shoes and one pair of PT shoes. Also carry a spare towel and wash cloth just in case one drops on the deck.
