Short video this week, guys! If you've followed our sailboat search this far, you'll know we took our time to find the right boat, and even with a significant drop in our budget, we were stoked to find this Tayana 37 project boat here in Florida. She's a beauty but she needs a lot of work!
This is our first night on the boat, and we wanted to share it with you, instead of a traditional episode, since this is a day we will all remember!
Thanks for being here!

Congratulations. She really is a lovely boat. It’s good that it is raining now so that you immediately know what needs to be sealed up. I’ve heard it said many times that raining on the day that you get your boat is a sign of good luck. Someday you’ll fully heal the deck and it will be even more awesome than it is now. 🤙🏼

Lay out some tarps and use some gorilla tape to cover the deck where its leaking. Next check all opening holes through the hull for corrosion and seepage. Plan on replacing all discharge tubeing from the head & galley. Pump out black water tank. Get more than one sump pump. Get emergency patch kit for any hull leaks. Make sure VHF Radio is operational and AIS WORKS. Get spare pump empller and tools fore mechanical maintenance. Get plenty of fuel filters & oil filters. Water tank check install filters. You can never have enough epoxy to stop leaks.

The first day he was a mess and fell a bunch then he did it perfect and he’s been good ever since! I did buy him those glue on soft claws for his front claws on each foot but those things wore through in just a few days. One more comment after watching some more of your video. I have a shower in the head of my boat but I don’t like getting it all wet because it’s not a dedicated shower. I have one out in the cockpit that I love. I usually shower when I’m underway and it is hot water. If I’m in a marina, I have tapestries that I hang from the sides of the Bimini with heavy duty clothes pins and I still shower in the cockpit. That way I don’t have to dry the head out every time I want to shower. You can get those in RV stores for the outside of a camper and just cut a hole in the cockpit and they install flush so it’s not anything you will be bumping into and it has a little door that closes on it.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
I’ve installed those myself into megayachts- you heard me lol 🤣 They had some serious trust in me that even I didn’t have. 🤣😂🤣 But yeah we do have two wash downs on the boat. The forward is raw water for the anchor and it leaks somewhere in the plumbing down into the boat and is wetting the wood in the front of the V berth so we use it minimally. The one in the cockpit is supposed to be freshwater but these are the flush mount ones that you use the weird plastic adapters for, and the old adapters and new adapters are different- and we don’t have the right adapter for that one. lol we’re getting there!!

Looks nice. About the size I would look at for longer trips or live aboard (35 to about 42). The 29 we have is fine for a month of holidays, quite comfortable in fact, but any longer and further from land, storage becomes an issue. That is, we don't need more living space but for longer trips, we need to be part freighter. Not that we would begrudge the extra living space... ;) And I really should mention that part of the reason we are quite comfortable is that we are anchored for at least part of any day, meaning that the beach is part of our front yard.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 7 месяцев назад
Hahah I understand! The Tayana 37 has fairly decent storage for its size, especially when you factor in the pilot berth. We don’t “need” to use the pilot berth for its intended purpose, so we can store things in it for long passages. However, if we want to bring a third or 4th guest aboard for those passages, feeding 3-4 people and loosing that storage space, may become tricky. There are some large pockets in the salon you could shove rice into, though. Haha
@lenwhatever4187
@lenwhatever4187 7 месяцев назад
@@TheSirensLog According to yacht designer George Buehler: "Guests are like fish, they start to smell after three days." He designs his interiors for a couple. Any extra beds have another primary purpose so that guests don't feel _too_ comfortable. That way they leave of their own accord... All kidding aside, we do have a family of 4 and do use two pilot berths to sleep all of us, though my youngest son has become reluctant to holiday with us for more than a few days due to other social activities. Our 24 year old always wants to be with us. I should also note that this boat is much more "roomy" than the 23 foot craft we were camping in before with four people.

The engine has actually been very well maintained. Its the least of my worries. It's just systems that haven't been used in a while that are giving us trouble. Shower sump, hot water heater, windlass, etc. She's been a motor boat for 3 years or so. It even came with a brand new set of sails that have never been on the boat. Found a receipt for them from 2020.

@@TheSirensLog Hey guys. I think I found a boat! Went to have a look at her to see if I could find a reason it it priced the way it is. It was a rainy day so deck leaks yes but only 2 and a few drips from forward hatch. So i made an offer that was accepted. It is a 1985 IP 27 priced at half of what i see others listing for. I do know older island packet have a chainplate problem as they are molded into the hull but I see the manufacturer has a external fix drilling right through the hull and existing chainplate utilising both a new one on the outside of hull and the orignal. I will call them to confirm this. Next step will it run and what doesn't work. It was just put back in the water after having the bottom done. Honestly if it does not run at 12K as well maintained as the boat is I don't care I can fix that and drop my offer. Just a little worried. Am I missing something?
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
@@simplecountrydrummernice!! Truth is- of course you’re missing something! But everyone is missing something when they buy a boat so don’t let it worry you too much at that price. Hahaha You can pretty much assume a complete refit and a potential repower. Just have some money in your back pocket and be ready. Important- are you buying through a broker? Because that should entitle you to a sea trial and survey. Even if not, it could very well be worth paying for the surveyor to come out and then you have a detailed list of all of the obvious things wrong. He will dig deep and you’ll have a thorough understanding of the boat- but he won’t find it all. That’s normal. I always recommend a survey. I’d call around and get quotes. Then you know! Prices on boats are dropping too. Definitely ask if the boat had ever had a salvage title, or if it’s ever been sunk. You’d be surprised! If it has- be ready to replace all the wiring, every piece of metal in the bilge, every pump…. And there will be a lot you have trouble accessing. But definitely have a good look around at wiring and plumping, look for corrosion, look inside in cabinets and under stanchions for rot and leaks, look for water marks. I know you said it isn’t leaking but if it was and there’s rot, that’s something you’ll want to tackle.
@simplecountrydrummer
@simplecountrydrummer 6 месяцев назад
@@TheSirensLog LOL no it has not sunk on land from rain or in the salt water. That would have been obvious to me after a decade and a half working on boats and no matter how good you clean it up or try to hide it the musty smell never goes away. The chainplates are the big thing and I think he knows about them. you have to remove all cabinetry grind them out of the hull replace and re fiberglass. VERY costly, like 12K costly to make it look like it never happened if you don't know how to do fiberglass work. New ones can be bolted to the outside of the hull with the old ones in place and it will work. I spoke with an engineer at Island Packet about it today. I don't know about down there but here surveyors are not technicians and they don't assess the engine. Sometimes I would get the call to do that. They are good at finding things wrong but cant troubleshoot anything. I don't really see the point in paying some guy to walk around with a fancy moisture detector that knows less about boats then I do and has no clue how to fix them. Thank you so much for your input
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 6 месяцев назад
@@simplecountrydrummerWell I’ll be honest, I just sold a Beneteau that didn’t appear to have been sunk and didn’t smell, and it had literally been laying on its side on the beach just a few years prior. There was only minor corrosion on the pumps that were accessible, but when the surveyor started really taking things apart to dig deeper to see what problems may have been caused, he found all sorts of things that weren’t visible or apparent to any of us. Just be careful. Yeah, our surveyors aren’t allowed to fix anything, and some surveyors here don’t do engines and some do. Around here, you just have to call around and see who covers what. Same goes for rigging. We’re boat people as well and could have surveyed the boat ourselves, and we kinda did! We spent half a day tearing into it, as was allowed by the broker. We then paid for a survey o confirm our findings and see what else. Honestly, he found pretty much the same as we did, he just went deeper and found a few additional things but for us, it was just the ease of having a solid list, something to show insurance companies, and also to catch anything we missed to couldn’t access. In the end, as always, once we had the boat, we found ALL the problems that even a survey wouldn’t find. 😂 that’s just how that goes. Good luck with it!! Let us know how it turns out!

I’m so excited for you guys. Those are gorgeous boats. I have an old sailboat in the Northwest and I run a dehumidifier in it when I’m not there. I have it sitting on the counter with a hose that runs into the sink. It’s a good feeling, knowing that dampness is being taken out of your boat. You might consider it. My dehumidifier is big which I’m not crazy about but I think they kind of have to be to really get the moisture out. I put it in a storage locker when I’m going to be underway or taking the boat out because my boat is only 32 feet and doesn’t have that much room. Good luck. With your guy’s skills, I know you’ll get that boat squared away.

we were in isla mujeris years back in a ct 41. a 36 ft cheoi lee double ender with four on deck pulled in next to us. could see the a/c water pumping out and we were envious of the comfort they enjoyed. soon two more came up on deck, then two more and more. ended being twelve kids packed into that little boat. were students on spring break with daddys boat out for a sail from texas. they had missed the yucatan mainland and were lucky to hit the island we were on. every evening they all packed back into the conditioned boat and you could almost see it swell as they went below. dont know how they found room to sleep, but would have joined them if asked to get out of the heat and mosquitos.

Find the leaks .... Use a chinagraph pencil to mark them and make a note . Then before a big storm hits rig a big deck tent ..ASAP. 😂 good luck 🤞🏼 its what your wanted. 😉🧙‍♂️🇬🇧

That's basically what we did! I bought new teak deck sealant (the biggest areas of leaking are quite obvious) but the tube was so solid, I couldn't get anything out of it, so we just tented it. Once everything dries up again, I'm going to try to properly repair parts of the deck to get us by.

I think you will enjoy working on the boat and making it yours. The arm chair salors will tell you all kinds of negative things if they had a boat they would to busy to bitch about how you are doing it wrong lol.

So what is the plan once your back to your home marina? Assume y’all will leave it a slip and work on it there versus a lift onto the hard. Pros and cons to both approaches, just wondering…
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 8 месяцев назад
Once we get it home, we will go to the slip and just do as much as we can dockside, since there is still a list! There are endless things to do. As soon as we can (hopefully sooner than later), we will tackle the rigging first, I'm sure. We will work through the summer- Hal is a fishing guide and is second generation owner of that company, so that sustains us through the summer, and I'm a yacht broker so I need to sell some boots! We will just stay busy through the summer, working on the boat and working up some cash! We don't have enough savings to just quit our jobs in the busy season, so we have to utilize that. BUT we live in a gorgeous area, and we can do local trips in our area and still enjoy the boat as it is. There's no solid plan, really.

Port Townsend has awesome people that work on wood boat If you’re ripping the teakdeck for new can roll liquid silicone or liquid membrane to stop the damage I know it a sin

PT is a LONG way away! We may order the new chainplates from them, but honestly we'd want to do something about this deck and rigging before we do a trip that far. Gotta do it all in FL once we're home.

When you watch RU-vid from Sampson boatworks you discover awesome talent from that town Side note another boat worth saving is yanekee too if you have AIS would love to it is now Owner don’t really give a crap about it sadly would love to have a business model to make money with it

@TheSirensLog 8 месяцев назад
Yeah, I actually know Leo personally, and we worked on Adix together. I don't get much into any of the RU-vid channels, honestly, I'm so busy with this one and our second one. hahahah So I don't keep up with what he's doing but I get the notifications. hahah But yes, PT has it all. I worked on a 1935 Colin Archer that spent a good deal of its life getting refit in that area as well. Where is the Yankee II? I'm pretty sure we will have our hands full for a good while with this one! haha

Not long well it is June 6th 2024 I found your channel and it intrigued me I saw the one about yourself's so I know you can do the repairs I am watching at the moment Tally Ho, Sailing Melody and Ship Happens No There's a Rebuild to be wary of but they tackle it like two champions just like yourself's so I've subscribed and looking forward to seeing this new boat of yours taking shape into a full sea fairing boat and looking awesome so here we go so all the best from John from Rugby UK.

@@TheSirensLog wow , I thought maybe yours was 3-4 yr of production. If your is really early then maybe the teak decks were done different or the deck might not have been cored just ribs maybe. On the lord Nelson trawlers the screws were supposed to have been put into where the ribs were so they did not go thru the deck or into the inside. You never know , the exploration might be interesting. Some Taiwanese boats decks were not cored with balsa but small blocks of mahogany! It rotted though if wet . Have a good trip around to other side , you should be able to get thru at marathon maybe it has a high bridge Cheers Warren
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 7 месяцев назад
Yeah, and Bob might have the answer to that deck question! I will see what I can find out. I'm plugging a few leaks and we have rain on the forecast for the next 10 days straight (it always changes but...), so we will see how bad she is after that. Still have to do a bunch of fittings and such but these big problems areas will be tighter at least. Thank you!! We would go through Marathon but we want to hit Dry Tortugas and do a little diving, so we will go around anyway. Even without sails, no point in not having fun along the way! hahaha
@Cheers_Warren
@Cheers_Warren 7 месяцев назад
@@TheSirensLog yup dry Tortugas could be fun but it’s a long way without sails and you can get some nasty weather , but you will have a chance to see what the engine is like before you have to decide. Any temporary reinforcing you could do to make rig a little more usable???
