Bentley will be just fine on the boat. New Year’s Day, 1985, I sailed out of Longboat Key on an Islander Freeport with a Hot school teacher and her 55# Blue ChowChow. We spent a year crossing the Atlantic slowly. When we arrived in Gibraltar, the school teacher left the dog, the boat and me but not in that order. The ChowChow sailed with me for another 17 years on 3 boats including a sail to Cape Town and Rio. I would never sail again without a dog onboard.

Awhhhh that’s amazing. Hahaha Did you do anything special for him in hotter places? Being Floridian and knowing the heat, it’s always been so “normal” and when I had my cat Chloe (bless her little soul) and lived in the VW bus for a while, I would get her the lion cut and she LOVED it. Plus she enjoyed the beach and all that so it worked for her. Of course, you’re not supposed to shave these dogs, so… and he is a Florida dog! My friend had a chow chow when I lived in the Virgin Islands and he did alright, though occasionally she’d shave him too. He does get hot and loves his AC, I just don’t know what to tell him when we get underway on the middle of summer. Hahaha 😂 We need bigger solar panels! Hahah

Pick up a couple of big tile sponges from one of the big box stores…. Great for soaking up water in odd shaped spaces, then squeeze out excess into a bucket … whole lot better than messing with old towels and easy to clean up and store for next use

Hey you’re totally right about that. Ya know, sometimes ya don’t think about the most basic things because there are 500 other things to think about and you’ve already left the boat for supplies 8 times today and you’re not leaving again so I’ll be damned if ya don’t do the job with what you have, kind thing. @@TheSirensLog Ain’t it the truth, I’m about to run errands for the stuff I forgot to pickup Friday… On the bright side, y’all have hot water now… the unit you pulled out looked very tired, unit put in looks purpose built marine, hope it performs as good as it looks!
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 7 месяцев назад
You say that, but we can't even really use the hot water because we can't shower in that head! The previous owner painted the head and painted the grate down and the sump pump doesn't work and under the grate has blackwater in it from a leak they didn't fix, and because of the ongoing leaks, the bulkhead is holding water and it can't air out being painted, so.... running that shower head through the portlite and taking showers on deck, I'm afraid. @@RicCross

That 90 degree fitting the head discharge ine needs to be removed--shit does not move well through 90s--a garanteed problem area. You can either add more hose for a curve or use a Slow-curve 90. Best to rplace all that 1 1/2 sanitary hose with new, routing is critical---Mikey

congrat!…trust me, you have no idea where the water is actually penetrating the decks …that water runs all over the place before finding an escape spot into your boat …sure hatches and masts leak , but i’m pretty sure you’ll be chasing them until you remove all decks and hardware and such… she is a beauty! i’ll be watching and hopefully find you with more pleasure than pain…

If you haven't already ordered the lifeline netting, look into buying netting from a professional fishing net company, they sell it by the pound. I bought 5 pounds at $15.00 a pound, enough to net my '38 Pearson, and have enough left over for hammocks, cargo nets and more. I bought mine from a company in Mississippi, fast service and good quality.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 7 месяцев назад
Hey! Was it from Netsand more.com? I was actually in communication with them but I started to think I wouldn't be able to get it shipped here in time before we leave the dock. Bentley is actually doing REALLY good on the boat and everyone on our dock has assisted in helping him learn to stay on the boat, so I *think* we may actually put off the idea of getting the netting. For now, anyway!

Hose clamps eventually will come loose from hoses hardening. If the hose has the length to cut off an inch then I like to put a wrap of butyl tape around existing end of hose and put a new hose clamp on it and tighten. The butyl tape helps keep the clamp from piercing the hose. Works on power steering hoses too! You two both attacking the projects will make for some interesting discussions, lol.😮
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 7 месяцев назад
butyl tape, solid recommendation. There's no length to cut. It's tight in there! I suspect sometime this year this entire boat is goin to get re-plumbed.

My brother was a commercial salmon fisherman on the West Coast before he passed. He had a husky named Huckleberry who jumped ship about 5 miles off shore and swam to the state park, was not missed for a bit. The next day my brother retrieved him thinking he had swam to the nearest land and found him eating hotdogs at a camp site near the beach with a group of boy scouts. This dog always did his poop duty on one spot on the fore deck that was easily washed off. He floated like a cork.

The vent cover you bought is meant for a floor vent, so there are no holes to mount it for a wall vent. You can either drill holes in it for mounting screws, which I don't recommend, or get some silicone sealant and just put some large quantities inside the 4 corners to hold it in place. Good luck.
@haltarpley9237

It had 4 holes. It is two pieces. A plastic piece that snaps into the brass cover. The plastic base screws to the wall and the brass cover snaps onto that.

Thread tape goes the opposite direction. It is applied the same direction if you want to tighten the nut or bolt. Then it stays where you put it rather than bunching up and leaving a gap sometimes. It will work both ways most of the time, it will always work if up put it on "righty tighty" Unless you have rare left-hand threads.

Please do not get rid of Bentley. He is beautiful and a keeper. No one will even think of trying to board your boat with him on deck. That's wonderful. Consider the couple who had a catamaran in Grenada last week and were boarded by 3 escaped criminals who are suspected of killing the couple and stole the boat. The boat was wrecked shortly after being stolen and police arrested the 3 suspects. Violence on the boat was apparent but the bodies have not yet been recovered. The couple was from Falls Church, Virginia. As a sail boat owner I have a dog for this reason. 🐕‍🦺 Be safe. Cheers. S/V Cork~Texas🇺🇸⛵

Looking good, I missed as to why you can't sail. If its a rigging issue I would think it OK to sail in light conditions ,at least with the head sail. A 1000 mile trip under motor is a long way, over that distance you will stir up the fuel tank and find out what lurks in the bottom as with the Engine sump. So have plenty of filters. As for the deck , there is nothing wrong with giving it a sand , especially as you are going to replace it down the track. Old Decks collect water in the tiny recesses , a sand helps shed the water. Maybe even do some re-caulking . Obviously where its paper thin there is nothing you can do. All in all the ship looks in good shape.

Port chain plates. One has a crack and the other just looks iffy. I plan on using the jib or stay sail to help the engine but, only if the wind is putting the weight on the starboard side. Thanks for watching.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 7 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! Yeah, the surveyor called us after the survey and said the chainplates were a lot worse than we all thought after zooming WAY in. We want to change the chainplates out anyway and put them on the exterior where they should be anyway, and we went through the logistics of doing that here and ultimately it's too much to do here and now. It's better for us to get the boat home where we can be working and making our summer money while tacking these projects in a place we have all the resources and tools. The deck! ohhhh man. Yeah, we're back and forth about what to do with the deck. I reckon if someone will sponsor us the caulking (because THAT is a lot of money and that's what makes it not worth rehabbing), I'd be on board with pulling the seams and re-seaming and sanguine and sealing. In the mean time, I've cleaned and brightened the teak, and today I'm going to patch the deck in the places where it's obviously taking on water, and then I'm going to seal it with Starbrite's version of Semco. (Thank god we've been sponsored by Starbrite for over a year) That should help as a quick fix to get us home.

A new 42 foot Hunter! We were docked in San Diego, California. We motored to Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico. My wife being the smart one said “ if we are going to motor everywhere, why don’t we buy a power boat”? When we got back to San Diego… we put the Hunter up for sale! There is very little wind along the California! The only place we could sail we in San Diego bay… the wind would funnel through the bay and it was fun to day sail there! No trade winds!

Mine didn’t . On the right top there the pressure relief. And under it on the bottom left is a drain like an outdoor faucet. That’s plastic. The company sells an anode that gos where the drain is . Remove the drain and install the anode . If it has the anode you can tell it has a little metal cock and not the plastic faucet valve . It’s a known problem in all the cruiser forums . The paper work it comes with recommends you purchase an anode. Maybe they changed ,it was two years ago . I welded it and it started leaking again .

That is a floor vent, hence no screws. Gravity holds it in place when you set it on the floor, where it belongs. You really want to purchase a vent that has directional louvers like the one you removed. Maybe just paint the old white vent. I purchased my wooden vent from Fisheries Supplies. Always replace rusty clamps with quality stainless clamps. Check every hose and clamp on your boat and replace anything defective.
