Its time to officially test the Off-Road Wheelchair we constructed out of 2 Electric Bikes. But slopes might be a different story.

Overall I'm pretty impressed with the bike. We learned some of the limits. I think airing down the tires, and getting a bit more tread on the rubber would be beneficial to going off road. As soon as the bike loses momentum, it doesnt have torque to start going uphill again. BUT on simple slopes, or flat surfaces, this off road wheel chair is a beast.

I have been in a wheelchair for 16 years. This summer we took the kids through national parks. I had to hang back while they went for hikes on trails. This would not have enabled me to go anywhere, but I could have done a lot more than what I did. Love the creative spirit and ingenuity. You guys rock.

Lower the tire pressure on the back wheels for more traction and for a softer ride, also rig the brakes so one brake lever controls both back wheels and another for the front wheels ;)

use hydraulic brakes and you should be able to split the front to both tires and the back to both tires.

@@spidennis mechanically the best easy thing is to have only 2 inexpensive hydraulic brakes like Shimano MT200, both to the front wheels. In the video we see the exact opposite, 2 mechanical brakes on the rear wheels.

60-80% of braking comes from the front wheels. You're skidding around because you disabled the front brake. One armed riders will splice the hydraulic line to run both the front and the rear for better stopping power and even braking. Overall, making the bike more playful and safe. You may have disabled it, not wanting any riders to "jump forward", but if you turn and brake with only the back wheels you're likely to skid and fall to the side anyway. The lever allows modulation of the pads so reconnecting the fronts will make it a lot more enjoyable. - Pro Mountain Bike Rider & Bike Mechanic.

My only suggestion would be to remove the clips that hold the saddle posts and either cut down those pieces of the bike frames or cover them up with a soft material so she wouldn't accidentally hurt herself when getting in and out of it. Cutting them would be the most aesthetically pleasing, but covering them up with a soft material would allow to convert them back to stock if you were to upgrade the frames to have rear suspension later on. You absolutely need to lower tire pression. This kind of tire are built to work well at a very low pression in order to improve traction. Also, be sure to use it tubeless.

For offroading you might have to add some kind of suspension in the back, so that there is no tire lifting of the ground.

To get more traction lower the tire pressure on all the tires so they can form to the ground better, fat bikes are designed for lower presser in general as the tires are less likely to "fold". Also with a lower tire pressure, it will add a boatload of suspension! I'm guessing anywhere from 15 to 20 psi but test around.

@@4wdsome444 That's a good point, with there being 4 wheels you don't need extra traction in the front to keep the wheel from sliding out from under you. But I wounder if it would affect the suspension, with the center of gravity so far back maybe not!

Hi Zack, Four ideas, 1) Move both batteries to under the seat, and 2) Cut the upper crossbar off the left bike, this will lower the center of gravity and allow side entry/exit. 3) Put some type of armrests/guards in the old seat post holes. 4) Add a second link behind the fork to stiffen the steering while taking some load off the angle brackets.

Love it! in a dream world, I'd Add two "rear wheels with electric hubs" to the front as well... AWD. Then split the controller for each side so it could turn on axis, or give the option to lock it out and crawl up the hills :). would an "suspension seat" like in a off road buggy be the answer with the current frame design? Possibly lower the pan in the current design to accommodate for the seat travel. I liked the other's in saying using hydraulic brakes. You could even make hard lines like in a car and possibly repurpose the safety valves and crossovers for the safety aspect if pressure was lost. Ha. I could go on and on! Just found your channel. Thanks for taking the time to do these!

You guys are brilliant, defo to front brakes, i think vertical bars coming out of each seat post up to the top and bent forward to provide a shelter above for the rain and from breaks yes possibly also lean both bikes in towards each other just a little bit like the wheels are on a speed wheelchair also you can put motors in front wheels also the barscoming out of the seat posts can also be a roll bar for safety.

As you mentioned in the previous video, a full suspension frame would be superb. it would definitely help traction when one of the back wheels comes off the ground, and give the bike a more suitable "crawler" feel. Another thing you can look into in the future, if you ever make another wheelchair bike, is a mid drive motor. Maybe an after market battery. DIY ebike components are much more capable. Higher efficiency and higher torque.

Very clever design. Opens up a whole new world for the user. Would be interesting to see a rear drive track system with a rubber track and bogey wheels similar to some small excavators. Traction seems to be the only drawback on some more extreme trails. Greater surface area of a track that thing would probably climb those extreme hills like a mountain goat.

For more off road traction, you can drop the tire pressure a little to get a bigger contact footprint but sacrifice range.

Hey Zack. Awesome build,,,, I would suggest lowering the tire pressure as mentioned by Aram Teran. As a full time E-FAT-bike Rider I can vouch that lowering the tire pressure works wonders for grip and over all ride comfort I have my tires running @10 psi rear and 5 psi front for off road and on road I go up a bit to cut down on rolling friction, OVERALL GREAT build, with all the negativity surrounding ebikes this is something great that you have done.......

Hey Zach, as a mountain biker and I live in Utah somoe of my friends have a plus size tire bike so with wider tread and for the tires i would recommend Maxxis Rekon tires or Maxxis High Roller II plus tires. You can order them online or at a local bike shop

Fantastic! I know that's a wheelchair but this concept could become a great off-road quadricycle. Next time use bi-suspended bike frames, a roll bar plugged into the seats posts and connected with the pedals hole-bar and seat frame (for security and for to stiffen the whole structure), four hub-motors with a dedicated controller that can do reverse gear (and regenerative brake too), hydraulic brakes (one for two front wheels, one for rear wheels), parking brake, arm rests/rear fender and maybe lights ... I would like do it myself but i haven't money...

I am blown away by the work you done here! I was just thinking about the stability of the wheelchair... Could you attatch both bikes in a (maybe) 20° angle to the seat? I'm not sure how much it would affect steering or the turning radius, but it would give the construction more stability. Maybe play arround with the angle a bit. Or maybe add a grid (like a lawn mower height adjustment system) on both sides of the chair to adjust few different angles for different tarrains. To keep it stable maybe use two pins on the grid. awesome work :D

I would have preferred the handle bar being in the middle like the regular bicycle with an option of adjusting it like modern car steering wheels lower or higer or near or further depending upon the reach.

Try lowering the pressure on those rear tires... Fat bike tires are designed for extremly low pressures. Also putting the seat more further backwards will help with those traction losses

Great work. I think you need triangular suspension. If you connect the two bikes and the seat at the crank the bikes can move around this point like when you stand up on your bike in rough terrain.

Great job! A 350W hub motor on each wheel, a wider stance, and a belly pan/bumper to protect the rider's feet and it would be a hoot for non-mobility-challenged too! A clever fold could allow it still fit in a pickup.

Zack can get the bikes to move independently in the vertical plane so when your traversing very uneven ground the two bikes move to give ground contact on all 4 wheels. Will need design changes to the coupling between the bikes and also your steering linkage. As suggested by others a crawler gear upon this would be awesome.

Heyo, for front brakes, you could run hydraulic or mechanical brake lines through the steer tubes of the forks if you have nothing obstructing. If you do have a star nut in there, you might need to get a special one to route cables through. That'll allow you to mount brakes without concern for cable wrapping.

i have some suggestions for this thing, maybe like a revision 2 whenever you create the next bike? - bigger discs considering that the brakes looked like they barely worked. maybe up the size and go for 203mm on both the front and the back? - rear shocks. FOR SURE. - go for a nicer chair maybe? - work on the brake level positioning. maybe have them facing down instead of up? these things just all contribute to a better ride experience in general.

I don't know about US but here in Finland wr have Tempur wheelchair cushions. Tempur was originally created for Nasa as seat cushion and one of the original scientist creating the material has said "I was trying to develop seating for aerospace vehicles so people could better survive any crashes or impacts." If you have those Tempur wheelchair cushions in America I'd suggest to give it a try.

need some downgearing option for moving through gravel (?) - how much power was left when you did the Y trail ? Too late in season but maybe the Timp Cave trail which is paved could get approved on a 1-off basis to test there - otherwise it's a firm no-wheels on the trail. That's a fantastic place with really awesome detail and views...

A really easy way to get extra grip would be swapping the rear tires for something like the Maxxis Mammoths. I run them on my bike and they do great in the snow, on gravel, and pretty much everything I can throw at them.

Can you allow the two bikes to pivet a little at the seat to help keep the rear tire on the ground? Instead of the hard connection on the back of seat, run a pan hard bar between bikes behind the seat then connect the seat at a single pivet at the center of the pan hard bar.

Suggestion. One possible point of failure is the steering linkage bar. Being flat, could bend and render the bike uncontrolable. You may want to use a tube (with less propensity to bending than a flat section) instead. Heck, Cambry could even slip a light aluminium tube over the bar and call it a day.

Make a rear axle for the bike and have breaking system on the axle along with the drive system. I would also suggest installing a rear shock too. And try to incorporate front brakes somehow and she'd be mint. Well she already is mint but you could make that thing a monster! Great job on the build!

Will you be making Retrofit kits, to allow folks to DIY connecting 2 bikes? What if you could cant the wheels out @ the bottom, like are on some “racing” wheelchairs (for stability)? The seat connector would be wider at bottom, and narrower at upper bike connects...could prevent tip-overs on the irregular surfaces off-road.

any way to make the frpnt as wide as rear wheels and put a dropdown ramp to the front so the wheel chair could back into the vehicle then lift the ramp to make floorboard. user would not need help getting in.

Are the engines connected to both the back wheels? So if only one engine is used at a time it wont get uneven torque?

I would add a set of the rear shocks from some other bike between the rear bottom of the seat and the frame to give some more shock absorption. basicly use the lower tube that had been for the pedals as a pivot point and then added shocks would make a much smoother ride

How did you sync the two motors? I would think the hand brakes could be mounted 180 degrees from where they are and used like a normal hand brake. Anyway, great contraption for a good cause and a great video as well!

If you get dual break levers you would be able to have 2 break levers like u have already except each would work 2 breaks allowing front and rear disc breaks and therefore improving break distance. Not entirely sure how easy the break levers are to get hold of. In the UK it is a bit of a pain and I know a guy who can find them but in the USA it may be easier

I'm thinking this would be better with two softtail trail bikes...It would probably give more traction on uneven surfaces. But really cool project! I'm sure Cambry will be happily using it frequently.

wouldnt it be a bit easier to manage steering wise if there was a bar connecting both "arms" together , it could also be used to restrain against when going downhill or heavy braking as well , if it restricts getting in and out of the seat the bar could always fold in hald and lock with some kind of arrangment

I'm new to these videos... but what about using the adjustable tie-rod ends from like a go-cart or riding lawn mower? Tie rod ends might go a long way in terms of durability.

A hub motor in each front wheel might really help in getting up hills. Basically 4wd. I’m building a recumbent pedal version on this. Maybe later I’ll make it electric.
