This is my first trip out with the Wilderness Systems Pungo 120. I took this out on Lake Lanier and was really impressed!

I have used the Pungo 120 for 3 years now and bought my wife a brand new one last March. We live in the midwest and spend a lot of time on small rivers in the Ozarks. We love ours, best kayak I have ever owned/used. A little pricey but well worth the money. We often do 3 day trips with our kids (one in each yak with us) and have no storage problems. Summer time ultra light gear of course.

Cool! I'm hoping to take a multi day trip down the Suwanee River in mine.

Great video. I have been thinking about picking up a Pongo 120 for the past few months. Not only did you help me make my decision, but I also enjoyed your commentary! Thanks.

James Ford It's a great kayak. I buddy of mine just picked up one too. I've had it out about 8-10 times now and really like it.

Is it safe to kayak on Lake Lanier with all those speed boaters running wild? I guess you have to stick to various creeks around the periphery

I've not had any issues. I tend to stay close to shore. There are places to put in that are more limited in traffic too. The only time I cross the lake is if I want to get to something interesting so I'm not really in traffic very much out there.

Joe - Nice review. Is your Pungo the standard or the Ultra-light?
@UncleJoeHikes
@UncleJoeHikes 7 лет назад
I believe it's the standard. It's about 2 years old now. Is the UL new?
@Christopher_Stevenson
@Christopher_Stevenson 7 лет назад
Not sure if the UL is new. Same design, just made of different materials to come in 7-8 pounds lighter. I'm hearing the UL hull is more subject to cracking on rocks and such. I'm torn between the Pungo 120 and the new Old Town 126. You look comfortable in the boat. May I ask your height and weight? I'm a big guy at 6' and 220 lbs... I'm thinking I can fit in a Pungo.
@UncleJoeHikes

I'm just under 200lbs / 5'11".

Why the 120 and not the 125? I am thinking of getting the 125.

Hi Joseph, Do you use a Gimbal with your camera? Your video is smooth and doesn't bob with the kayak?
@UncleJoeHikes
@UncleJoeHikes 8 лет назад
No I don't. It's often in my hand though.

what kind of kayak did you come from before the pungo? I have a 9ft vibe sit on top and I'm really interested in the pungo 120, y biggest gripe with my vibe is storage compartments and it's slow, extremely stabile but at a speed cost. the pungo is 3 feet longer and 3 inches narrower but only a couple pounds heavier. what do you think? are you in Georgia? I'm in SC just across the river from Augusta. so did those trees ever fall? I love watching your videos, what kind of camera are you using?
@UncleJoeHikes
@UncleJoeHikes 8 лет назад
+Timothy Smith I had a Perception Caster 12.5. I have a video in my channel of my first outing in it. The Pungo is much faster. Also, you can stay dryer in a sit-inside. I am in GA, near Lake Lanier. I haven't been back to that area but I doubt those trees fell. I need to get back over there when the weather warms up. The camera I am using is a Sony Action cam. Specifically, the HDR-AS200V. I really like it. I bought a Hero4 Silver but sold it. I like the Sony better. Video compares well but it has much better sound pickup, comes with a standard mount, and can be mounted without putting it in a case (unlike the Hero). I find it a bit more versatile.

+Joseph Polk LOL I ended up seeing and watching that right after I sent my comment :) Awesome, looks like a good area for outdoors activity up there. I'm waiting for the weather to warm up so I can get back out on the water too, cold weather doesn't do well on a sit on top lol. I looked that camera up, and it looks good. I have a GOPro 3 and an SJCAM 4000 (GoPro knockoff) but the audio quality isn't too good on them, especially in the waterproof housing. How long does the battery normally last you?
@UncleJoeHikes
@UncleJoeHikes 8 лет назад
Yeah if the housing is on the Sony it's not so good. If you watch my Three Forks to Hightower hiking video you can hear how bad that is. It was rainy that day and I was afraid it might get too wet. It's "splash proof" though so now I risk it unless I'm on the kayak. The battery life is pretty good. I shoot at 1080p at 60 and it holds up pretty well. That said, I carry a spare battery.

I'm a little late to the party, but do you think this boat would suit a bigger guy? I'm about 6'4" and 260, and as much as I'd love a kayak, most of the boats I've looked at have been next to impossible to get in and out of. I'm considering the 140 to do a little fishing out of and to take for overnight to weekend camping trips. Thanks!
@UncleJoeHikes

+Chris Koski Its my understanding that that's one reason for the 120 for those who find the 100 a bit too small. It should accommodate you fine. The 140 adds a bulkhead to the front as well. The nice thing about the Pungo is that if you remove the console you have a very large cockpit.

Thanks for sharing. I was looking at this model today and thinking about getting one for me and another for my wife. The salesman told me that there would be room in front of each of us for our three and four year old. Sitting in your boat, do you think you could comfortably sit a child in front of you?
@UncleJoeHikes
@UncleJoeHikes 9 лет назад
A small child yes. It comes with a removable "dash" compartment. If you remove that a child can fit there.

Thanks for the reply. I kinda beat you to it. Our local shop had two at a deal I couldn't pass up. I actually ended up with the Pengo 140...same size cabin though. I got the loaded on the rack, went home, loaded up my wife and kids , and after fitting their PFDs and applying sunscreen we were on the water. What a great afternoon. Thanks for your video. It was a great help for me. My three year old son is already asking for his own. I look forward to more of your float reports.

Been curious about a direct comparison between the 120 and the 140. Since you've had them for a year, what are your thoughts?
