Do you like to hike? I love getting into the backcountry to hike! I present my hikes on this channel as a way of giving viewers some idea of what a particular trail is like in terms of difficulty, aesthetic beauty, flora, and sometimes fauna. And I'd like to think I make it a little fun along the way.
Not into hiking? Into sleeping? You might find you get better sleep watching my videos! Ask your doctor is watching Uncle Joe Hikes is right for you!
the importance is to remain calm which is what you did! I had a bear encounter in the middle of the night in the Green Swamp in Florida. I crawled out of my tent and threw some tinder to fuel the mellow fire at 2 am and I started banging on the fire ring while it circled me in the saw palmettos it growled and clicked it's jaws but eventually it left when I started singing Led Zeppelin's Immigrant song..true story ...ever since I am always bear aware carry my bear spray with me all the time now...the secret to surviving is not show fear if you show fear the animals look at it as weakness...always remember we are at the top of the food chain.
Wow! I bet that was intense! Given the proximity to the campground bear spray was probably in order. I wasn't unprotected, though, but luckily this was a positive experience for me, at least.
The older I get (56), the more I realize the importance of hydration as well as electrolytes. I drank 2.5 liters on a 11 mile mountain run/hike last weekend (Rabun Bald/Bartram Trail) and ran out 8 miles in. Had to use some of my buddy's supply. Not to be preachy, but please don't underestimate our need for hydration!
Yeah I've started carrying electrolytes. Now if I can remember to use them! What happened to us, Man? We used to play outside in the 90's like it was nothing!
Hmm, the fact that the bear knew your name tells me your subscriber and view numbers are deceivingly low. 🤪 Glad your encounter was benign, I'm hoping for a similar one up there.
Your video as usual was outstanding. It came out at a great time too. I always look forward to your videos but this one was special. I fell 20 odd feet this past Thursday and my hiking for this year is pretty much done as I broke my leg and back. You have become my eyes on the trail now so hope you have more coming soon.
Great trail Uncle Joe! I’ve hiked and camped it many times. It’s fairly easy hiking to the falls with a gradual down hill. It kicked my butt coming back. HA!
Yeah there's something about that trail that kinda wears you out. Funny how you can come off that trail and feel like you hiked something with more elevation.
Hi! How much time it takes you to reach Bly gap and came back to the Blue Ridge Gap point? Just as a reference :) I'm planning to do it by August. Thanks!
That's a good question. I don't recall exactly and having a group would certainly impact that time. It's about 3mi each way so probably 4 hours with good break is probably what to expect. It's about an 800' climb up over that 3mi so not bad. You gotta get pics at the iconic tree!
Yeah, looks like them Keebler elves have all left the country, lol. Once your body gets use to low carb you should feel a whole lot better.I have to eat low carb since I'm diabetic and I keep my daily carb intake to 20 grams or less. Great hike Joe!
Yeah previous attempts to do this have been unsuccessful as I've had some negative side-effects. I'm doing it a little differently now starting with cutting specific carbs and limiting my intake in general.
Only twice. The first time it was a small bear running away from me. On that same hike, the day before, another hiker caught up to me and said a bear was on the trail between us. The second time was on the Holden Cove Trail heading up to the AT. If you check out this video at the 24:56 mark I see a bear up a tree getting acorns. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LT8hJK1A_yc.htmlsi=z6AZMXhOgGTGDmqc
Despite having spent my teen years in Gilmer County and hiking all over north Georgia, I never did hike Rabun Bald. One of these days I'll make it down there for the climb.
This is one of the more tougher routes. Of course Beegum is trivial. Taking the Bartram eith from the North or South is nice, though both are a little longer.
Don't think it was a bear digging in that log. You'd probably see some claw marks. Not sure, but wondering if squirrel? IDK, just my thoughts. The squirrel in my area leave small holes in the yard like that. Not sure about logs in your area. I'm guessing the logs were sorta decayd some too.
Thanks Uncle Joe. Did this loop to the top of Blood in March 2023. Chose it because of your videos, and it was a great day. Got an early start and went up to Jarrard Gap first, and loved hiking with all of those young thru hikers (I am 67).
