First Pair Fitting: Super Flexible!!!

She is so lucky ! And have so pretty feet !When I tried my first pair at 10 years old, the lady didn't tried different shoes she went for the first pair that was my size... and my ballet teacher made us go on point before we finished our growth spurt so it wrecked my ankles, knees and hips. It broke my heart when my physician told me at 17 years old that I could not do ballet ever.

Josephine, could you do a video of a first pointe shoe fitting for an adult starter? would be an interesting one to watch ^_^ keep up the excellent videos!

Josephine, can you show us her in these exact pair of pointe shoes in like 2 weeks - 2 months? I'm particularly interested in how you as the fitter and her teacher will break these in for her (will you flex and "fit" the shanks to follow/support her arches?), lacing for newbies to pointe and the wear pattern she will develop on the tips, at the barre as she starts out. Etc all that fun stuff! PS let me join the chorus of LMAO my feet are exactly like that #twodifferentsizesintwodifferentdimensions ... :) :) :) :)

My feet were like these and my pointe shoe fitting wasn’t like this. I had to have a harder shoe that was tight and felt so small but on pointe they were better and more comfy...I would complain doing flat work in them because they were too tight...en pointe life was better...unfortunately i had to stop dancing because i had so many more issues Ehlers Danlos Syndrome - too hypermobile. I ended up having multiple surgeries on my feet and other joints. But I like to think that in another life i was a ballerina...because i really loved dance and did really well in it (got into a contemporary company) but now i’m in psychology and helping people. I’m glad your educating people that flexible feet = need more support and stability training!!

when I was still doing ballet I used to randomly say to people "omg you perfect feet!!" and didn't realize how weird it sounded 🤣🤣

I wish I had someone as great as you fitting my first (and last) pair of pointe shoes! I have very similar feet to this girl and I got so frustrated when my ankles would slip out of the shoes all the time because they just would not bend with my arch at all. I gave up on pointe class after a few weeks. Fortunately I had no ambitions to become a ballerina so no harm done, it was just disappointing.

i would love to have had a fitting when I started on pointe! Where I live I couldn't try the shoe nowhere!! I was so unmotivated to class because they were always slipping my ankles and my fingers were always so uncomfortable. I actually quited ballet 2 years ago because of it.. yet I may go back next year!! (sorry english is not my first language)

It looks (even when she's not on pointe) like she has really high arches. Are there specific things you look for for high arches, or is her foot flexibility more important?

Watching these videos make me so nostalgic. I used to dance as a little girl all the way into my mid teens whereupon my parents stopped my lessons intending me to focus 100% academically. It’s always be a regret I mine as I used to love all my dance classes. I remember I had to persuade my uncle to buy me my pointe shoes as my parents thought they were bad news for my feet. LOL he got into so much trouble with my Mum after we returned and I started to sew my ribbons in joyfully.

1 day I'm going to a ballet & when I do, I'll think of you, your videos & all those who modeled the shoes.

I haven’t danced on point in about 8 years now 🥺 but my feet were so much like hers! I remember shoes so tight on flat I practically waddled into class. And I’d crisscross my elastics to keep my shoes from twisting at the heel on pointe. But I really miss it!

I really could have used you back when I had my first fitting! My feet are extremely flexible, and I got fitted with such a hard shoe that I was never able to get up fully en pointe. The shoe made it really hard for me to enjoy pointe, so I ended up quitting.

This is really good to know! First- I’m sad I missed u in Portland! But, also is good to know bc I have really high arches as well, but have been nervous to get my first pointe shoes bc of fittings & just going to any dance store & getting fitted incorrectly. I even notice the heel gaping in my regular ballet slippers. I have to really cinch the front & prefer to buy small so that I feel like their secure.

I'm not in ballet, but I have feet like her, so I often wondered how ballet shoes fit on wider feet. Who knew that fitting ballet slippers would be so interesting.

You should come to Pittsburgh, PA to CAPA performing arts, some of the freshman dance majors are new on pointe and some have been on pointe for a couple years, but Pittsburgh doesn't have a big range of shoes to pick from. It would be amazing to have a fitting like this.

Like her feet my shoes are big when I’m on pointe and too small when on flat.

This is making me realize that if I actually started point training when I was still dancing it probably would’ve been hard for me to find a good shoe because my feet do the same I’ll thing and my ankles are pretty flexible but my feet are really narrow like ridiculously narrow

I had the same issues where every shoe looks too big on me! I have to buy a size down and my teacher actually asked be if I could buy the next size down below that! At which point I showed her that I could barely get them in my foot on flat 😂

hmm, this is interesting. I'm an Irish dancer and for a long time I've been struggling with my shoes being wayyy too big when i point my toes and when en pointe in my hardshoes because the shoes just don't bend with my feet and it's disappointing because i want to show off a strong arch! When standing demi pointe though, my shoes are so tight i get bruises in my nail beds. Also get terrible arch pain! My only options are to deal with it or tape my shoe around the arches like many dancers do! I know it's not like ballet, but any tips?

This is soo helpful thank you I have been worried about my shoes getting baggy when I go up on pointe, elastics and ribbons have def helped a lot but there is still lots of wrinkling of the satin. Turns out it’s because of my arches that’s the price you have to pay I suppose with first pointes 😅

As a dancer who has always done Demi point work, I have that problem with leather shoes in the beginning too they are tight flat on my instep but they fit in the heel or are too big when I go Demi pointe. I have to pick the shoes that are leather with a full sole other wise I have issues with my fit and I am not as supported in my arches comfortably for me to go Demi and feel comfortable.

Exactly like my feet...looks pretty but REALLY REALLY hard to work with...

i test for pointe next year and i have pretty flexible feet so im really trying to work on my ankle strength because i have a lot of range of motion in my feet and ankles which makes balancing alot harder because i get wobbly so i hope i can strentghen them enough for pointe

I'm 19 and never danced, but I'm really thinking of starting ballet when pandemic gets better. Looking at my feet (really flexible, my friend that dances ballet envy me a little bit ~I swear I'm not making this up!!) they are kinda like hers, even though not as much. I love ballet since I was a little girl, but never got the chance (and money) to take classes. It'll be interesting. Of course I would love to get en pointe but that wouldn't be my goal, I just would love to dance after years and years of watching videos and not being able to do the same things ballerinas do!

I am a ballet teacher and have a low-tone dancer w/ increased range everywhere (I'm also a physical therapist) with beautiful feet who was put on pointe by her previous teacher, but I feel she is much too weak to be on pointe yet. My question is, this dancer just got a new pair of pointe shoes, and her big toe is flattening w/ complaints of pain. There is no twisting of the shank. I took her off pointe, but for education's sake, what would you consider the issue to be?

I have flexible arches but very strong ankles with compressible metatarsals, so it was a hot mess to find the right shoe. I liked a softer shank because my feet would cramp up with a harder shank and a more narrow and longer vamp that was stiffer so I wouldn’t slide in. With flexible feet it’s such a hassle for shoes because I literally felt like I was doing all the work instead of the shoe working with me. At first glance they look normal until my teacher saw me stretching my feet one day and was like “uh yeah we’re gonna need to get you refitted”

Well, I have pretty flexible feet too and I just broke my first pair (without even knowing first) I just prepared them to look good with my feet and that I feel safe and comfortable in them, so maybe (and I'm definitely not an expert) the shoe has to be even more softer? But I think it depends on the person, right?
