First passes on our "BUILT" 307 Cu SBC!! How Fast is it???

We head back to the drag strip to put our upgraded $300 unknown milage 307 Cu Small block chevy to the test. What impact does $1600 in top end speed parts make on a little cheap small cubic inch mystery motor and was it worth it? How fast is our junk yard '70 rescue project now? Did we quite possibly make the most fun, cheap, and reliable bracket car out there?

Guys People can say what they want about a 307, But Back in 1975, My friend had a 68 chevelle with a 307, I was 14 he was 16, I grew up working on Motors, I rebuilt his motor, I did a real rebuild, I file fit the rings, Honed the block Plastic gauged,all bearing,s I put a 488 with 292 cam, biggest I could go without doing head work, Heads were Canadian Power packs 194 /150 valve Ported, 373 rear posi, 650 double pumper, at Lebanon Valley raceway, Car ran first time out 118mph 12.6 Not bad for a 14 year old.

Nice !! Man, the younger guys don't remember the shaming one got in the high school parking lot / auto shop class if you had a 307 Nova back in the mid 1980's HaHa ! I bet it would actually go a little quicker with the small valve heads slightly massaged and a smaller intake like the regular Edlebrock performer or factory iron Q jet one off a 327 or early 350. Low buck sleepers built with junk factory parts are big fun.

I remember back in my younger days my dad built a Chevy 283 cu with a hi rise intake dual 4 barrel carbs and built 400 turbotranny was running low 12's in a quarter mile and this setup was in a 4 door 1974 Nova with its complete interior due to it was are family cruiser vehicle. I'm now 55 years old but damn the late 70s and early 80's were fun.

Man, my cousin had a 307 in his Camaro that absolutely ripped! I remember it had a crane fireball 290 cam in it. It was a 4 speed car and it would practically break the leaf springs hitting second and third gear. Saw 120 mph more than once in it! He swore up and down it was a stock 307 except the cam, intake and headers! One weird note; it cranked over like it had no compression and the power didn't hit until 3 grand so maybe he wasn't lyin'.

Worth every penny, you can't build a 13 second sbc 350 for what you have into that underdog sbc 307. Another thing I noticed is the open headers, some collector pipes will get you a few more HP. 18 to 24 inches should be good for as much as 20 HP with the right length? Plus they'll help keep your shifter cable a bit cooler. You might want to route the new one above the cross member too? You got to do every trick in the book to find every little bit of power when you're running less cubes, every little bit counts. If you have a good test street across the border, nudge, nudge, wink, wink, you can figure out what RPM the transmission wants to shift into 2nd. Hold her in first at WOT until you can't feel it pulling anymore(or 6,500 RPM which ever comes first)and take note of what RPM you're at then shift into 3rd while letting off, you don't want to get a ticket in Canada.😁 Or if you think you're clear, see how it feels shifting into 2nd. The factory bottom end with the short 3.25" factory stroke should be good to 6,500 RPM. The guys back in the day claimed they could rev those 327 rated at 350 HP to 7,500 RPM all day long. The only difference is those had a forged crank. The 307 has the upgraded forged rods that got better bolts after 1968 when they increased the main and rod journal sizes. There is a few more tricks to add as well if you want to try to see how far you can take the 307? A couple more are mentioned in the comments on the first video.😎👍
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852
@itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 24 дня назад
Oh yeah, I just remembered how to figure out what length you'll want the collector pipes.🤔 Start out with about 30 inches of pipe for both sides, paint them with cheap spray paint. Where the paint stops burning off is where you cut the pipes. This should be the optimal length. These will help pull the exhaust out which in turn will draw harder on the intake charge during the overlap cycle helping to fill the cylinders better is what these will do for you.😎👍

Go to a muffler shop and buy a length of pipe to make header collecter extensions about (one foot will do). cut the back end off the pipe at about a 40 degree angle take the piece you cut off and turn it about a 180 degrees and weld in back on the pipe,. Do not weld it on facing down , (turn it towards the side of the car and slightly downward) you will then have a turn out to get the gases off the shift cable ,if you have any hedder wrap, wrap the shift cable with a piece of it. Don't forget to check the plugs to see if the jetting needs adjusting. Yeah... ditch that bargain catch can. You might want to try a 1 inch carb spacer, plastic would make for some heat dissipation for the carb too. Think about a small generator to run a fan to cool off the team and cool the engine down between rounds, you're gonna need one when you start going rounds. I'm just saaying!!!!!!!!!

With that little 307, you need a 2800-3000 stall converter, and 3.91 gears to make it fast but still streetable (sort of). 3500 stall and 4.11s would put you DEEP in the low 13s or high 12s.

I expected about a 14.5 @ 92. The 13.9 was surprising! Glad ya had fun, kid. That's what matters. I got my initiation in May of 1995, at the brand new Mission Raceway, in Abbotsford, BC, in my roached 68 Charger. First pass was 15.2 @92. I was so disappointed! But I'd forgotten to remove the air cleaner! 2nd pass was 14.7 @97! With gears, a carb swap, and tuning, I later got the car to 13.39 @ 106, on street tires!

great work! where in Jersey? I grew up in Middletown, going to Englishtown on Friday nights street night in the 80's/90's. 300-400cars, massibe amounts of 3rd gens and fox bodies. The Nova is great, a 307 is just a 327 minus .125" bore. I always wondered if the bores are thick enough to go to 4" like the legend of the early 283 blocks thick enough to go the full 4. an LS1 makes tons of power with a 3.905" bore, so you did the right thing and put some air to it. looking forward to more!

With that power level there's absolutely no need to run open headers, you'd actually gain some power with some 18+ inch long collector pipes and some straight thru mufflers! Also at that power level track temp should make no difference for you at all,you're not running enough power to worry about the track getting "hot and greasy". Also sounds like you could really use a bigger better cam in that motor! But enjoy it and keep at it, you'll be adding a nitrous kit in no time!

Having fun is what it's about. back in the 80's i ran a 57 Chev with a mostly stock 350 and glide that would turn low 12's. Trouble-free...Saturday morning I would check the fluids and load on the trailer and go racing. Never really even had a reason to lift the hood. And then I wanted to go faster....the fun ended. One small bit of advice though, put an air cleaner on it. Good luck and have fun.

@Hatch'sRecreationalEngineering- Im a new subscriber, and a drag racer for over 30 years. Congratulation's🎉 on your 1st, 13 second 1/4 mile, and your 1st sub 2 second 60 ft., in the same Pass! I know your just starting out, but try shifting 200 Rpm higher in 1st gear going into 2nd gear, until your time doesn't improve, then go back to your best shift Rpm, try this in every gear, as each gear may like a different shift Rpm. Depending on if this Nova is just going to be a drag car, i would find out what Rpm is the optimal shift point. Once you know that, you can then use your Best Mph( if your Best is 99Mph, i go by 100Mph, for my calculations), the optimal shift Rpm, and your Rear tire ht., to calculate the Rear Gear Ratio, that would give best E.T., or MPH. They will be close, but i prefer going for quickest E.T., as thats what drag racing is, well and having fun with family, and friends= the BEST! I ❤ that your family, and friends, are so excited, and supportive! Its so great to see how excited you are as well! Gear ratio example: If your best was 99 Mph( i would use 100 Mph ), and your optimal shift Rpm is 6,000Rpm, tire ht. Of 26", and your going for quickest E.T., i would use a rear gear ratio, for the 1/4 mile of 4.30's. If you have 28" tire ht. In the rear, i would get 4.56's. Also get a Hi-Speed Tourque Converter that is rated 2,000 Rpm below your optimal shift point, so in this example= 6,000 Rpm shifts= a 4,000 Rpm (8" to a 10") Tq. Converter. If thinking about using Nitrous in the future, get a tq. converter that has Nitrous Ant-Balooning plates, and can be used with a trans brake. Also if you consider driving on the street, or using Nitrous, go with a 3.73 rear gear ratio on 26" rear tires, or 4.10s with 28" if spraying. Ask me any question you want, and i will try to help you get what you are wanting, thank you. Hope this can help you, i really ❤️ drag racing, and helping people with my knowledge!

It ran perfectly. Upgrade on ignition probably won't do much. Maybe mess with the timing a bit. What kind of gears you running in that rear end? If not at least 4:11, I'd go lower. He installed sbc 305 Vortec heads on the 307 in the episode before this one. He did cam and lifters, genuine imitation RPM Airgap dual plane intake, 1.6:1 roller rockers, double roller timing set and a 600 Holley double pumper. He's still figuring out how to drive it to get the best 60ft time and the shift points. The best pass he crossed the finish line in 2nd gear. But he still needs to know if he needs to hold first gear longer or shift sooner. Plus there is some tuning he can do to get more out of it too. Like header collector extensions and there might be some more power in the timing and a few other tweaks he can try as well before he bolts on a nitrous kit or a turbo.😎👍

I had one race with a Dodge ram 1500 with 318 and that 307 I barely out ran them the 318 could not get around My Nova with 307 but that's not fast I'm guessing 16 second quartermile. My cousin had a 350 sbc from a Camara it had flat top pistons stock flat top pistons but it had 305 ho heads. They don't have the best powerband but O to 72 mph was 6.2 seconds on stopwatch. I did not run it through quartermile but My cousin entered that 1974 Nova with the 305 ho 350 head motor I had and won a race at the local dirt track in the spectator race and won a 3 foot trophy with My sbc 350. A 883 sportster tried to co.e around me and I put speedo from 55 when I got to 129mph I put several gaps on the Harley. I don't know what it would run but I imagine e with a 125 cheater nos kit and it would be even faster. That woke My Nova up. It was a nite and day difference going from 307 to 350.

For an inexpensive upgrade, seems like it is begging for a cam. Keep the same heads and see how it does then? High 12's? Make sure the 4 barrel is coming completely open.

If you guys think that was performing flawlessly, you better stay in Maryland and Pennsylvania. The car was all over the place. The driver was all over the place. No consistency anywhere. In Alabama if you can't run within a couple hundredths at worst and you can't cut an .04 or better light EVERY PASS you are going home first or second round.

Forgive me if I'm over bearing I just feel like I'm on the ride with you and that old gem has SO much potential to it and watching you get excited about it is pretty cool !!!!! Do you have a gas tank or a fuel cell ??? A fuel cell would work better and would lighten things up some and you only need about a 5 gallon cell and much more accessible for any trouble shooting !!!! Used cells a cheaper and in good shape would work just as good as a new one !!! The plastic urethane ones work well and makes things lighter and gives your trunk a purpose !!! Also makes a good area for relocating your batteries or battery !!! Helps put weight in the back and can help with traction and weight balance !!!

An MSD6A and super coil with the 8.5 mmm wires will make a big difference !!! Change those rear gears to 4.30s and put that timing at 38° total advance and update that chassis strength so you DON'T twist anything and I bet you $500 it will run 12.80s all day !!!!! Update that cooling system too !!! Heat is an engine killer too if it gets too high !!!!
@davidkeeton6716

If he had brought his starting line temp down to 140 or less, he would have dropped down to a 13.5 provided everything else went well.

I watched a guy run three back to back 7.20s 1/8th mile in a 306 Fox body. I heard them say they were running 170°. I told them to cool it down to ambient air temp, 90°. Start it up, do a burn out, make a pass. It went 6.80. They were jumping up and down.
@circletrack7538
@circletrack7538 24 дня назад
What temp are you leaving the starting line at ??? 170 - 180 is normal for a sm blk chevy If I recall that correctly !! 38° of total advance timing ??? I believe those rear gears are choking your converter out !!! It goes then it just falls on it's face and just sort of drives out !!!! I believe the right gears will put you in the 1.70s 60' times !!! If you do that you BETTER re brace that seat because you just might do what I did and be looking up at the ceiling with both feet up against the lower dash !!! Thank God I had a roll bar in it or I would have been flat on my back !!!!! It was quite embarrassing !!!!!!
@circletrack7538
@circletrack7538 24 дня назад
In the track only ??? Get rid of everything belt driven water pump and alternator go electric pump and electric fans and a deep cycle battery and charge it between rounds will save you more horsepower and help you be more consistent !!!! Adjust front tire pressures for good consistent reaction times !! Low pressure more roll out high pressure to decrease roll out !!! The tree I believe is 60% of winning rounds because that is where the percentage of my round wins came from !!!! You DON'T need to be killer fast just steady and consistent !!! In my opinion 12s are fast !!!! I ran 10.0s and lost to more than enough 12 second cars and I was for the most part a good consistent drag racer !!!! Know the tree and your car and experience with time is a winning combination !!!! In fact it's almost like a drug , it will get in your blood and the smell of fuel and burnt rubber and oil plus the smell of the track will become your perfume of choice and will excite you and it just drives you to want more !!!!! I did back flips when I got into the 12s !!! I was a full blown ADDICT in the 10.0s and 20,000$ later from running 12s !!!!! 10s kept my attention plus I was at my financial limit even with some good sponsors !!! 9s and below are for guys with very deep pockets and extremely understanding wives or being single !!!!! I do wish you tremendous success in all your drag racing ventures and a lot of enjoyment with your posse of choice !!!!!! 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁😃😃😃😃😃

On your 14.41 time slip you ran 95 mph which goes with a 13.7 to 13.5 ET !! The guy beside went 12.69 @ 123 !!! That mph goes with an 11.0 to 10.9 pass !! The right gears are both definitely the main issue !!! You start hooking to the track with that much power next problem is chassis and frame twist !!!! Frame connection and a roll cage or even a 6 PT bar would help take care of that !!! I was splitting bell housings with a 12 PT. cage and a full box tubing frame !!! Needed to eliminate the chain and stock Motor mount location and go with a motor and mid plate set up !!! Give your headers room and totally solidifies the motor and trans and improves suspension grip and any chassis flex !!!!
@circletrack7538
@circletrack7538 24 дня назад
If I may ask where is your total timing ??? I believe now your biggest blockade to a 12 second attempt is without a doubt your rear gear ratio !!!! I think it's HUGE !!!! At least a second HUGE !!!!! Put 4.30 in that and shift it at 6200 you just might faint !!!!!!
@circletrack7538
@circletrack7538 24 дня назад
Hood snorkel and an air pan ??? If your converter is new it is just starting to break in !! Needs a number of passes to see where everything is !!!!
@circletrack7538
@circletrack7538 24 дня назад
Your killing horsepower and torque !!! You need about 8 - 10 inches of extension on those headers to make them work right !!! There is a formula to where they should be I just can't remember it in my old years !!!! The shorter headers does hurt it !!! The little technical things can be a real pain but they do add up !!!!!
