***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

Kevin, Wondering if you could pre-make the cage & sell them as a 2nd income for the quail?? Make just the panels 8ft x 2ft bottom & make the front & back & end, ship them flat to the customer. They can make the end supports & then they can screw all the panels together? Kevin, you could be known as the IKEA man of the " Quail World"! This would work for a lot of people that do not have a workshop or skill to build??? 😁

I like that the cage isn't over engineered. Keeping it simple. The quail don't weigh much so no need for extra structure and material. Something tells me you may need another one soon.

Awesome job Kevin ! You talked me into raising Jumbo Quail. I got my hot plates for my brooder yesterday. My Brinsea incubator is coming today. All I need to do is build a brooder and cages and order hatching eggs from Zach ! Thank you for all the inspiration and awesome videos !
@tropicallivingoverseas5202
@tropicallivingoverseas5202 2 года назад
Be sure to apply selective breeding. Some "jumbos" won't be so large and if you let them breed, you'll eventually end up with regular size quail.
@losttreasureprospecting5019
@losttreasureprospecting5019 2 года назад
@@tropicallivingoverseas5202 are you meaning to keep only the larger birds for breeding?
@tropicallivingoverseas5202
@tropicallivingoverseas5202 2 года назад
Exactly. Jumbo quail are just regular quail that have been chosen for breeding because they are slightly heavier. Failure to do that and your quail won't stay "jumbo".

Some engineering advice. Make the floor end of your cage ends the same as the top; that is to say the crossbars should be 1 1/2” off the floor. The rails should be 8’ and attached the same as the rails forming the cage. Since floors are seldom perfectly flat, having only four legs making contact will allow the cage to settle securely to the floor and no rocking. By offsetting and overlapping the rails and crossbars at the corner will make them stronger and will eliminate failure from fasteners colliding at the same intersection. The angle braces will benefit from this as well as they will be attached at different heights.

rather than having to clean the poop off the floor , would a shelf built under the cages, where you could slide in plastic low rise bins to catch the poop and easy to slide out and empty, not sure if you would use wire again to make the second shelf for the bins, depending on the cost or just the frame and staple a trap on and you can just sweep the poop off into a bin, keeping the floor clean. no bending over and you can hose down the tarp if needed. just a thought!!
@katherinez9654
@katherinez9654 2 года назад
Just a thought…instead of using cardboard under the pens, I would go to a local flooring store or a box store(Home Depot, Lowes) and get some remnants of a thick grade loose lay vinyl. You can collect the poop off of it and then hose it off and lay it back down. It has fiberglass in it and lays flat. I use it to line my kitchen cabinets and my canning cabinets. It’s wonderful.

Kevin, I am new (newish) to Quail and every time someone asks about Quail hutches I tell them that your build was a main inspiration for mine (my hutch is a blend between yours and Slightly Redneck's since mine have to be outside). I tell them to look up your video. Today, I'm making a playlist of those who have taught me about Quail. This is one of the first videos I'm adding. But I noticed, this doesn't seem to be on your quail playlist. I had to search to find it. (not complaining. Just letting you know to maybe add it). You and Sarah have inspired and taught me in so many ways. Thank you.

I followed your channel as well as the coturnix channel a while back. Cool to see you take on Quail. The DIY by Terry is now triple the cost for materials. Luckily I obtained a free undercounter fridge and will turn that into a chest style incubator. In late January I'll be looking to Myshire for hatching eggs. Love that there are so many great channels put there for self sufficiency!!!!

Thank you for explaining each step so thoroughly and going through all the materials required. As a newbie builder it is very frustrating to go into one of the big box stores and going to the screw section and seeing wall to ceiling shelves with no idea what you really need. Zach uses plastic coated wire for floor bottoms I believe. Have you ever used it? I imagine it costs more.

Hens usually are 1.5 to 2 yr laying time, but it depends on the type of quail obtained. If you go to Myshire Farm Zack has a complete grow out on his web site for all his quail sold, it’s very informative and can be downloaded and printed. Several questions I hope you will answer. The first being, can you raise and keep quail outdoors in the winter with bedding in these cages or an area for them to go into when they want to get out of the elements? Second question, I have a very small backyard, less than 2500 sq ft if you include the areas I have set aside for my garden areas. Can these be moved and places over growing plants and allow the dropping and all to drop around and on the plants during the early and mid growing season? Can you get quail chicks and not have to incubate your own chicks? Thanks in advance!
