Helluva dog. Hope sometime it gets on wild birds on the high plains. Excellent gunning.

Thank you! We do get out on wild birds each fall/winter! He’s turned out to be an absolute pleasure at home as well as in the field!

Great video. That Brit is doing an awesome job out there. Looks like a great time. I’m looking to get a Brittany soon, are you happy overall with the breed?

I am happy with the Brittany! He’s a great dog both in the field and house. We competed in our first field trials last year and he made it to the finals of the National Championships. Unfortunately we didn’t win by some mistakes on my part... My wife and I agree that after our setter passes we will only have Brittany’s. He’s good with the kids and our cats too.

Nick Massey That’s great to hear. Congrats on the field trials. Many Brittany owners I’ve talked to have had nothing but great things to say. The only concern I’ve heard is their energy levels can be very high which can lead to bad behavior if they’re not worked. Have you experienced anything like this? Do you leave them unattended at home for 5-7 hours? In the house or only outside? I got a decent sized yard, my folks have some acreage and there are many parks around my house. I’m just hoping I can keep up with it energy level and give my dog the amount of exercise it wants. Realistically I can only take it out hunting 1-2 times a month.

Dylan Miller I am in about the same situation as you basically. I can only run him about 1-2 times a month as well. He does have a lot of energy but it doesn’t cause any trouble. However, every dog is different. In my experience and others that I spoke to prior to getting him, I have had or heard of any issues of trouble.

Nick Massey awesome thank you for the info. Any books or training you can recommend? This will be my first bird dog

Dylan Miller no problem! There’s a ton of info out there. I used Scott Miller’s dog training video. I will say the most important thing I’ve learned about training bird dogs is be patient. It can be frustrating at times but be patient and they will slowly get it. Some are quicker than others, but repetition and patience is key.

walker w I got him from a breeder in Guntersville, AL. I can’t remember their names honestly. He’s 6 now going on 7, but i think they still breed them.

But way too much talk and whistling for wild bird rough hunting.

Yeah was really young when I shot this one. He’s now a multiple field trial champion and loves to wild bird hunt. I really don’t have to say much to him at all in the field these days. I really have never had a dog that is so much in sync with me in the field as he is! Thanks for watching!

You guys are shooting close to that dog I would be worried I would shoot it I have a Brittany and she is about 15 months old and she hunts great

Eddie Schall thanks for watching! The camera angle makes it look a lot closer that it actually is though with it being on my head. I shoot closer to him than I’ll allow other people to, just due to my shooting background I know exactly where my gun and pattern are going to be before I ever pull the trigger. However, gun safety and especially safety for my dog is of most importance to me for sure! We love our Brittany and will probably only own this breed going forward. He’s great both in the house and field. I wish I would have owned Brittany’s growing up as well. He and I are headed out to KS this week to try for some wild birds. I’ll try to film some of the action if we get any!

Nick Massey cool, I hunt stocked pheasant most of the time because that is what is close to me and it is very fun. also what kind of shotgun is that, a franchi?

Eddie Schall That works too. That’s what we do as well both pheasants and quail. I have a membership here in TN that I work my dogs on pen raised birds. So when we get the chance to get out on wild birds it’s a blast! The gun I was shooting on this hunt was my Winchester 101 .410 Shotgun.
