If you want to more of Neil and Rush in action -- in a way that will blow your mind -- watch the live video of them doing their song "Xanadu", from 1981!! You will see orchestral, Progressive Rock at its finest and you will see a drum set that's even bigger than the one you see here!!
The Drum Master- Circa 1991-Drumming has the power to unite people, no matter how varied their language or cultural background might be. On a recent trek through Africa, Neil Peart had a singular experience that proved just that. "I was in Gambia, walking through a small village, and I heard the sound of a drum. So of course I was curious! I looked into a compound and I could hear the drumming coming from a curtained room. I walked up to a woman doing laundry in front of the room. She could see my interest in the sound, so she waved me to go in. Inside I found a young, white missionary from a nearby Catholic school. Sitting across from him was the commanding presence of the local drum master. He was attempting to show the missionary how to play any kind of beat. The missionary was trying as hard as he could, but he wasn't having a lot of success." After a time the drum master, frustrated by the missionary's lack of ability, noticed the other man who had come into the room. The master had no idea who this person was, but he thought to himself, "Why not see if he can play?" According to Peart, what happened next was fascinating. "The drum master gestured to me to try and play a rhythm. So we began playing together, and he started smiling because he could tell I had a rhythm - maybe not his rhythm, but a rhythm of some kind. We were playing and playing, building the intensity, and little kids started coming in, laughing at the white man playing drums. Then a few women came into the room, and everybody began dancing to our beat! The master and I even started trading fours. It wasn't a spoken thing, but he could tell that I would lay out and listen to what he was doing for a certain amount of time, and then he would do the same. It was just a magical moment." When they finished, a confused and startled missionary ran up to Peart and asked, "How can you do that?" Chuckling to himself, Neil politely responded, "I'm in the business." World Inspiration Neil's love of bicycling and travel is well known - it's almost the stuff of legend. While on tour with Rush he's been known to avoid the tour bus and bike to the next town and venue. When not on the road with Rush, he has taken his bike to the four corners of the globe, including Europe, mainland China, and Africa. Upon entering Peart's Toronto home, one is immediately struck by the fact that this man has seen and experienced locales most people can't imagine. "Here's a prized possession of mine," he says proudly, showing a raw-metal sculpture standing about ten inches high and resembling a tribal version of Rodin's "The Thinker." "It's from Africa. It weighs about twenty pounds, and I had to carry it a hundred miles on my bike. but it was worth it." Neil's passion for authentic African art is obvious. Unique drums, with their rich, hand-carved elegance, are displayed in his home with reverence. Original Chinese gongs decorate a few of the walls. The decor hints at the fact that a drummer lives in the house, shouts at the fact that a word traveler resides there. Peart's love of travel is obvious, but does actually going to other parts of the world inspire him musically? "First of all, I think travel is very important for any person," he insists. "It's affected me enormously, and I'm sure it filters down to my work. Africa is not an abstraction to me anymore - neither is China. They're places I've experienced, places where I've met people, made friends - and just broadened my thinking. "I've written lyrics that were directly influenced by my travels abroad. In a drumming sense, I've had some interesting experiences in different countries, experiences that may not directly affect the way I play drums, but that certainly inspire my feelings about drumming. And I've gotten very interested in hand drumming. Lately I've been working on playing the djembe." One way Peart's wanderlust has directly affected the sound of his drums is through sampling. "One of the small drums I brought from China is an antique that's too fragile to play. So I took it and a few of the other delicate instruments that I own and sampled them - along with many of my other instruments like my temple blocks and glockenspiel. I've built up a huge library of sounds, and they've made their way onto our albums in many of the different patterns I play." A particular pattern Neil has recorded that demonstrates the value of "world inspiration" comes from Rush's last album, Roll The Bones. "On that record we had a song called 'Heresy' that had a drum pattern I heard when I was in Togo. I was laying on a rooftop one night and heard two drummers playing in the next valley, and the rhythm stuck in my head. When we started working on the song I realized that beat would complement it well."
@@Bklynreau That is what you call a once of a lifetime experience. This man was special and traveled the world to find new things and visit new people. He is considered the "Mozart" of drumming. His drum playing was unique because he composed drums just like songs and melodies inspired by his travels. I saw him play 9 times and his solos were a MAJOR part of Rush's concerts. He is the ONLY drummer that put drums in the forefront just like a lead guitar and lead singer.
*$75,000! 24kt Gold plated!!!* *Only the best for the BEST!!!* *Neil Peart is called 'The Professor' for a reason! G.O.A.T.* 🥁 *He also wrote 99% of the lyrics!!!* ✍️ 💜💫✌🏼🎵
Best thing about Neil is that when he was considered one of the best rock drummers of all time, he started asking to learn from more people in styles he didn't know. Jazz, tribal, etc. He never stopped trying to get better. There was always more to learn. It's how you keep yourself interested in your craft, how you keep getting better. He's a perfect example of how motivation can drive expertise.
That's a gold-plated kit. The real deal. Neil is the best ever, seen him 5 times live. I'm blessed for that. So horrible we lost an amazing musician, RIP Neil 😥. Wish you were here. LOL! The washing machines are an inside joke between the band
Neil is one of the greatest drummers of all time. He didn't feel like this was one of his better performances as he was dealing with having the flu. 🤯 To see more of his drumming check out Malignant Narcissism from the Snakes and Arrows tour with Drum Solo. As for Rush songs Tom Sawyer official music video Spirit of Radio from the Toronto Sars Concert Working Man live in Cleveland YYZ live in Rio Rush are Geddy Lee Vocals, Bass and Keyboards, Taurus pedals Alex Lifeson electric and acoustic guitar, mandola, Taurus pedals Neil Peart drums, percussion and main lyrist. They are from Toronto, Canada and had a 40 plus year career. Unfortunately Neil Peart passed away from brain cancer in January of 2020. Why the dryers? LOL When Geddy Lee started plugging into the system directly he didn't need his big amps anymore. Alex Lifeson still had his so the stage looked unbalanced. They added dryers, roasting chickens, popcorn machines and vending machines. These guys have a real sense of humour! Cheers
Interesting factoid. One of the popular drummer magazines (I think it was Modern Drummer magazine) used to have a monthly vote by subscribers for who was their "great drummer of the month" type of thing. Neil Peart was winning that vote so many times that they had to disallow voting for him and made him his own category. Essentially, nobody else ever won during that time. You ask any good drummer who they idolize, who they want to be, and virtually all of them will tell you, Neil Peart. He was an amazing man, in many ways. He wrote most of the lyrics for RUSH, he wrote some fantastic books. He was probably the greatest percussionist to ever live. He endured unbelievable tragedy in his life (lost his only daughter and wife, 6 months apart). He himself died on January 7th, 2020, of a brain tumor. Tears come to my eyes every time I think of him. RUSH has been an integral part of my life since I was a teenager. Their music helped me through some of my own difficult times. Neil Peart was of course a very integral part of all of that for RUSH could not have existed without the very special trio that it had (for more than 40 years!!). Very special people, all three of them. Very talented people. Very good people. We all miss Neil very much. RIP Neil ...
Subbed for Rush! 🥰 Also why I play Bass! 🤗 I saw Rush open for KISS and went to every Rush concert in NY, NJ & CT after that! Up until their last show at MSG! 😁🐰
Neil Peart past away in 2020 RIP. HE WAS ALSO KNOW WITH THE NICKNAME OF "THE PROFESOR," AND SINCE 1979 TO 2021 IN CANADÁ, UK AND USA IN THE TOP 10 DRUMMERS OF ALL TIMES. ALSO HE WROTE 9 BOOKS AND THE LIRYCS OF RUSH SONGS. HE IS NOW INMORTAL THANKS FOR A GREAT REACTION
I told you....Neil's the GOAT!! Awesome reaction BReau!! I'm so glad you got to check him out(RIP NP). But...both Neil and Danny are ridiculous!! Listening to them is like listening to a special language, in music. You can't go wrong with Rush or Tool....period.
The drum kit is two drum kits combined. The acoustic drums are drum workshop. The electronic is roland v-drums. There is also the midi-mallet and foot triggers. The electric drums are connected via M.I.D.I. to a rack of synthesizers and samplers. All sounds are played or triggered by Neil
Neil Peart aka The Professor, wasn't afraid to learn new drumming techniques over the years. He went and visited Africa once for a little vacation and stumbled into a village. When he got there he heard this drum beat coming from one of the homes and followed the sound until he found the home. In fact, some of the villagers kind of shown him and the lady of the house saw him in the doorway and sent him to the room the man of the house was. He found the man of the house teaching a missionary how to play the African drum beat. but the missionary just couldn't get it until the man of the house saw Neil Peart and welcomed him in as well. Started teaching him, took him a few trys then caught on. after a while the villagers came to the house and started dancing. After that the missionary and Neil Peart left the house and the question came out. I have been trying to learn for months, and you showed up and got it in 5 minutes. How did you do that? Neil Peart turned to him and said, I play the drums for a living. It's my career.
Neil Peart is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. Danny Carey was influenced by Neil, same as Mike Portnoy and many others. As great as Neil was, he never stopped practicing or learning. Always tried to improve.
Ha :) The washer and dryer are because the bassist and singer (Geddy Lee) said the stage looked unbalanced since the guitarist always wanted a big stack of amps behind him. The crew does laundry during the show and they toss shirts to the crowd
@@Bklynreau in different years they had rotisserie chicken cookers on stage instead of the washers and dryers. The chickens cooked through the show and the crew ate after the show.
Don’t think it’s this kit. This was r30. The bog oak kit was the r40 kit. The documentary is awesome to watch. Never thought so much effort and care and art went into making drums. Hearing about how they can change the sound based on how they cut the wood and design it was fascinating. Then the whole part with the bog oak and Neil is priceless video we get to watch.
Neil the greatest drummer Period. If you'll notice after this set he's not even sweating or breathing hard. Now check out the Godsmack drum battle sully erna/ Shannon Larkin
Of course Neil would not be Neil without showing you where his roots of drumming came from the big band sound of the likes of cab Callaway and all the other artists of that air which are being displayed before your eyes. As a drummer myself who grew up playing big band such a wonderful tribute here and the greats of that Era
Neil Peart is Danny Carey's favorite drummer. Also a friend bought a replica of the R30 drum kit for about $40k. Neil's 1974 "chromey" drumkit sold at auction a few years ago for $500,312.
at 4:48 peart is playing 3/4 on his feet and playing 4/4 (and variants of 4) time with his hands. Total independence and extremely difficult. Check out Danny Carey if you want to see a drum solo as good.
Hey man, there are so many BETTER Neil Peart drum solos, but IGNORANT Rush fans think FRANKFURT is the ONLY Neil Peart drum solo. So sad. Great reaction on your part.
@Bklyn_reau It's hard to find the Video, when Neil played his drum solo on the album (Exit Stage Left!) But too me,it was Neil Pearts Best Drum Solo EVER!! 🤟🤘🤟🤙
