He told the producer to let Mann take the first solo, and he would perform the extended outro solo. “They never rehearsed it, really,” Gallen says. “Never really showed us what he was going to do, and he left, basically telling me, the producer of the show, not to worry. “And the rest is history. It became one of the most satisfying musical moments in my history of watching and producing live music.” Though Prince is onstage the entire time, he stands off to the side until the end, when he takes center stage. The history behind this: Prince and Tom were close friends. Just before this RRHOF ceremony, Rolling Stone had snubbed Prince off of the top guitarist of all time list and he was annoyed. As the story goes, Tom invited Prince to play at the ceremony because most musicians were like, “hold up, why isn’t Prince on this list?!” So, his spotlight and the way he walked off stage was a giant FU by Prince, Tom Petty, and Harrison to the music industry.
@banditski
@banditski 27 дней назад
Pretty sure that's not true. Prince was also being inducted into RR HOF at the same year so that's why he was performing here. Not as a friend to Tom Petty or George Harrison, or anyone else. From an article on this after Prince's death... According to the paper, the show’s producer, Joel Gallen, asked Prince to play the song’s solos, since he was there to be inducted anyway. But during rehearsals, Marc Mann, who plays guitar with Lynne, took over, knocking out a note-perfect recreation of Eric Clapton’s original mid-song solo. “And we get to the big end solo,” Gallen says, “and Prince again steps forward to go into the solo, and this guy starts playing that solo too!” There wasn’t time to get it right, but Prince assured Gallen everything would be fine at the performance. He told the producer to let Mann take the first solo, and he would perform the extended outro solo. “They never rehearsed it, really,” Gallen says. “Never really showed us what he was going to do, and he left, basically telling me, the producer of the show, not to worry. “And the rest is history. All the other people on the stage had actually worked with George, Prince had not. @ProsperoFinch
@ProsperoFinch Месяц назад
The way I heard it, Tom Petty was the designated band leader. Prince was a late addition to the performance, and the band had already been rehearsing for a while. Tom asked Prince if he was gonna join the rehearsals, and Prince said “No, just lead the chord changes and give me your cue” (or something to that effect) and Tom was like “okay 👍 “ Some other members of the band were nervous about that and Tom said, “Nah, don’t worry about it, he (Prince) will be fine”. Sure enough, Prince was more than fine. Fun bit: Prince’s solo wasn’t originally going to be that long. You can see he comes to an “end” and looks over at Tom as if to say “okay, we good?” but Tom gives him the go ahead to keep going because Prince was really locked in and rocking. So Prince smiles and rips it. And you can see towards the end when Prince starts nodding at Tom, that’s because Tom finally gave the cue to Prince and the rest of the band to bring the song to a close, so that’s when he switches to that strumming pattern to help end things. Despite being a solo player, Prince was a consummate musician who always served the song first

It’s not a competition like a sport. It’s art. It’s a collaborative effort by the whole band, which shined a light on Prince to culminate the masterpiece with a guitar solo crescendo at the very end. Tom Petty WAS NOT “singing over him”, and Prince wasn’t telling him to “shut up”. They played off each other and were singing in the background to keep the structure of the song in tact. It all came together in a mind-blowing finale. I didn’t think this needed to be explained, but here we are.

I'm sure I'm not the first to give all the background info on this, but it's definitely worth spelling out here: 1) While My Guitar Gently Weeps was written by George Harrison, mourning the breakup of the Beatles at the end of their time together as a band, and is considered one of George's best songs from his time as a Beatle. 2) This performance was at the Rock & Roll HOF, for George's posthumous induction. 2a) Inducted artists are given a 2-3 song set to showcase why they're being inducted, but George had passed from cancer a few years prior, so instead they organized a tribute performance for George's spot. 3) Just a side note here, but Dhani Harrison is George's son. 4) Prince was a good friend of George Harrison, 5) Prince had just been snubbed by Rolling Stone's "Top Guitarists" list that year, and had an axe to grind. 6) Prince agreed to be part of the tribute concert, said he'd take the closing solo, and told the organizers "y'all rehearse without me, I got this." 7) Magic happened.

Just to add to that, Prince was being inducted into the Rock & Roll HOF that year too (2004). He didn't just happen to be there. I've never heard he was a friend of George Harrison.

Prince was an anazing multi-instrumentalist and his gutar work was simply a part of his repertoire. He played nearly every instrument on most of his recordings and to have that ability, as well as be lyricist and composer, is beyond incredible. May he Rest In Peace.

The reason Prince went sooooo freaking hard(I loved it) was because Rolling Stone magazine released a top guitarist list and Prince saw that he wasn’t listed amongst his peers. I loved that Prince even looked over to Tom Petty to see if he wanted him to chill and Tom Petty let him cook!

Dude, can’t tell you how much I enjoyed watching you with your eyes wide and your mouth hanging open💜 But trust, Prince was not looking at Tom to get him to stop singing. That’s how the song goes. Everyone on that stage was watching each other and working together. They rehearsed. The other guys were like “Go off Prince!”💜

This song was written by George Harrison - and this performance was a tribute to the late Beatle. George's son, Dhani Harrison (at the time in his early twenties, playing his guitar next to the late Tom Petty - and looking so much like his late father, when he was the same age...) was promised (by Prince...) that he'd make him smile and laugh before the evening was over. True to form, Prince not only succeeded in his mission to brighten young Dhani's mood - he gave us all an unforgettable (and unrehearsed...) guitar solo! The Artist (formerly known as Prince...) will forever be in a league all his own - and a National Treasure, whose voice went forever quiet way too soon...💜

This video is special to me because I am a Prince fan and George Harrison & Beatles fan. I grew up with the Beatles. I became an adult when Prince came on the scene.. This performance was a tribute to George Harrison, who wrote this song,, at his induction into the Rock and roll Hall of fame. What I would give to have been in that audience!! This song was one of his biggest hits and huge for the Beatles Seeing his son there, standing in his place, looking like he was a fan rather than a musician, made it that much more special.

First time I saw this: when Prince tossed his guitar to God and then strutted off that stage like George Jefferson, I lost my shit. The man was a genius: music, style, presence. There's a story that Eric Clapton was asked how it felt to be the greatest guitar player in the world and he said, "I don't know. Ask Prince." Word.
@dggydddy59
@dggydddy59 Месяц назад
No. Where this obviously comes from is the old story, which is sort of a bastardization of an incident that actually happened, but the old story was that someone asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, and he said "Ask Terry Kath." Someone obviously just changed the names again as this rumor oftentimes gets repeated with different names, but Hendrix and Kath are where this originally comes from. Cheers!
