Hey man I've been following your channel and I've enjoyed seeing your reactions to discovering all this great work. I'm relatively young like you and I've been obsessed with music from this era my entire life. If you care to check them out, I have some suggestions of what I think are the essentials from this time period. I figure you're going to need a library of content to draw from so you can keep this up for a long while. I look forward to seeing you dig even deeper into some of the greatest music ever made. Here is my list of "must-listen" albums from the 60's and early 70's (I'll keep it to one album per artist and exclude ones I know you've listened to): In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson The Velvet Underground & Nico - The Velvet Underground The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars - David Bowie Paranoid - Black Sabbath The Doors - The Doors Close to the Edge - Yes Are You Experienced - The Jimi Hendrix Experience Who's Next - The Who Highway 61 Revisited - Bob Dylan Sticky Fingers - The Rolling Stones A Night at the Opera - Queen Fun House - The Stooges Forever Changes - Love Odessey and Oracle - The Zombies The Village Green Preservation Society - The Kinks Cosmo's Factory - Creedence Clearwater Revival After the Gold Rush - Neil Young Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen You were probably going to listen to these anyway: Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd Physical Graffiti - Led Zeppelin Magical Mystery Tour - The Beatles Some others: What's Going On - Marvin Gaye (soul album but fantastic and as conceptually brilliant as many of these rock albums) Pink Moon - Nick Drake (a little bit of a more mellow singer-songwriter album but one of the best of it's time) If you want to hear some of the most killer live concerts ever put to tape you need to check out: Live at Leeds - The Who Made in Japan - Deep Purple Live and Dangerous - Thin Lizzy Concert movies you'll obviously fucking love: The Song Remains the Same - Led Zeppelin Live at Pompeii - Pink Floyd Basically any clips of The Who or Jimi Hendrix playing live That turned out longer than I thought it would be. Sorry for the book.

Would you believe Pink Floyd made this album just down the hallway in Abbey Road Studios at the same time The Beatles were making Sgt. Pepper? In fact, the guys in Floyd visited the Fab Four one day as they were finishing up Pepper. It's great that you've reacted to these two groups amazing albums! This was when rock-'n'-roll was transformed into Rock music. In my opinion, the great psychedelic albums of the year 1967 were Sgt. Pepper, Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Are You Experienced (Jimi Hendrix), The Doors, Disraeli Gears (Cream) and The Who Sell Out (The Who)!

Chapter 24 was actually inspiried by the ancient Chinese book I Ching. It's one of the oldest books that has survived and offers a lot of interesting insight and wisdom. It's really cool how many bands delved into eastern philosophy, I think it reflects in the music a lot from that time

This is currently the only Pink Floyd album that I've listened to, I haven't even heard Dark Side yet because I want to go through their discography in chronological order. It's a really whimsical album, insanely psychedelic, and it had a really big impact on one of my favorite bands, an experimental pop band called Animal Collective. Some of their music is the weirdest music I've heard in my entire life, and some of their other music you could easily hear on a pop radio station. And its basically all good music! Also, very excited for Black Sabbath reactions!
@psychedelicpiper999
@psychedelicpiper999 22 дня назад
Animal Collective is one of my only favourite modern bands. I got into Syd Barrett’s music before I got into them, and I definitely picked up what a massive influence Syd was on their work. I remember when “Centipede Hz” first dropped, and thinking it’s one of the greatest albums I’ve ever heard. MGMT’s self-titled album had the same kind of effect on me, too. “Dark Side of the Moon” and after is nice, but severely overplayed. By that point, they had the most basic rhythm section that almost sounds like it’s click-tracked. I think that’s the main reason why I’m tired of it, and why I even prefer The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper” over “Dark Side”. They’ve also sacrificed the improvisation for tighter arrangements, and a lot of the time, it’s plodding. And the dissonance is largely absent, with only sprinklings here and there to add an ominous effect. So don’t expect anything insanely psychedelic by the time you reach that album. But it’s a classic in its own right. And I absolutely love “Meddle”. Syd’s solo albums are very much worth checking out. And so are the albums immediately following “Piper”. They’re hit and miss, but there’s definitely some gems where Waters was writing philosophically, and not straightforward and politically like on the most famous albums.

Oh, man; thank you for going back and checking out “Piper at the Gates.” You are the G.O.A.T., of reaction channels! If you feel the need to hear more Syd era Pink Floyd, check out the singles: Arnold Layne, See Emily Play, and Apples and Oranges. Two outstanding tracks from his solo work are: Octopus (It flows with psychedelic bars), and Baby Lemonade. Have you ever listened to Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland double album? Cat is 60s slang for a guy, just like bird or chick means a girl. Which doesn't mean that Syd wasn't talking about an actual cat like you thought. I'm just saying. Lyrics with Syd are somewhat Alice in Wonderland-ish where nothing is obligated to make logical sense and yet you feel something has been communicated. He's creative to a point that it can be hard to follow. Specially hearing it in a different century. Psychedelic rock arguably began with Pink Floyd, which is to say, began because of Syd Barrett. People may argue this but essentially Pink Floyd was so different in its musical vision that immediately bred attempts by other bands trying out counter intuitive lyrics with mind provoking titles. Band names changed significantly mid 1966-67 and beyond.

I hear, maracas that sound like cats tossing their litter box, guitar noises that sound like meowing and scratching, and the Secret Agent man riff, is the “soundtrack” of the cat on its journey about the house. Listen to it in that manner, and you hear the sense of humor of Syd. It’s how I hear it after listening to that particular track countless times.

I think The Scarecrow song all comes down to that last line where he says "life is not unkind, he doesnt mind." Even though the scarecrow is stuck in his one spot and cant experience the world, at the same time the world isnt being unkind in his life so hes okay. I would guess this is Syd implying hes experienced alot of unkindness in the world and while most poeple wouldnt want to be a scarecrow in a barley field; Syd sortve envys that existence because of what hes been through and going through.

When the Beatles were working on Revolver at Abby Road, Pink & the gang were also working on a record in the building. David Gilmore wandered over to the Beatles work area and watched. He said they were working on material far more advanced than anything Pink Floyd had in the works. He was influenced into writing whatever he wanted instead of listening to the company executives. This important moment of discovery soon changed their method and choice of material.

Sid was the main songwriter at this time, and as the only guitarist in the group, it really meant the band had to step up if they wanted to carry on. There is a stunning live version of Astronomy Domine on Ummagumma a few years after this that is even better. I really appreciated their second album, 'Saucerfull of secrets', it was the first to feature Gilmore on guitar and there were still many songs written by Sid, so it really had the hard psychedelia like tbe first album, but we also started hearing hints of what was to come with the writing partnership of Gilmore and Waters. I wish there was more of a catalogue with Sid, his writing was really out there, quirky, fun and dark all at the same time..

The name Pink Floyd comes from the given names of two prominent blues musicians, who Barrett loved: Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. FYI

It's not an album I'd listen too often, but it totally sinks you into the 1967 psychedelic atmosphere. It's not Pink Floyd everybody knows but still worth listening to if you're into 60s. Great reaction, as always :D

Syd Barrett and David Gilmore are both on saucerful of secrets (the 2nd album). He wasn’t intended as a replacement is this was the only point in the band’s career where they has 5 members at once. Syd Barrett then underwent the mental health and drug problems you discussed in the last video. The other note worthy members that made absences are Richard wright on the Final Cut (1983), before returning on the follow up album, momentary lapse of reason (1987), as well as Roger waters who left the band after the Final Cut. This means after the wall (1979), the band remained a trio the rest of their lifetime.

While Pink Floyd were recording this album , In the next room there was The Beatles recording Sgt Pepper ;) Pink Floyd became popular for their live shows and extended jams / songs ... Which David Gilmour maintained like the Pulse Concert.

Love your videos - they feel like showing a pal your favourite albums, and they actually take your recommendations seriously, offer amazing insights, and make it feel like you're listening with fresh ears! If you'd like to hear some more classic psych albums from the same era (but are more accessible than this and Smile), you have to check out Are You Experienced (Jimi Hendrix), Odessey and Oracle (The Zombies), Disraeli Gears (Cream), S.F. Sorrow (The Pretty Things), and The Doors (Self-Titled). The other 60s albums that are must-hears are The Village Green Preservation Society (The Kinks), Velvet Underground & Nico (Self-Titled), In The Court of The Crimson King (King Crimson), We're Only In It For The Money (Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention), and Safe as Milk (Captain Beefheart). Above all though, you need to check out the big post-Beatles solo albums (Plastic Ono Band, All Things Must Pass, and Ram) because those will take your appreciation of John, George, and Paul to the next level. Keep it up man!

1988, in the middle of the Indian Ocean on an aircraft carrier, I was trippin' balls on some acid a friend sent me listening on headphones to PF's "Relics" compilation album of the Barrett years, while watching the 1980's version of "The Fly" with Jeff Goldblum. Closest thing to a bad trip I ever took.😂😂😂

Not only the best floyd album (and floyd have many masterpieces). For me, is also the best rock album, for many reasons (lyrics, the music itself, all songs are masterpieces, it is groundbreaking, has diversity between the songs and, at the same time, a strengh sequence and unity etc, etc). The best

The Siamese cat in the song was a cat that used to hangout at the studio. For an idea of why the lyrics are like they are you should think about stories like Alice in Wonderland. There was a period where writers made up words for creating surreal scenes. Pink Floyd grew up in the shadow of that era.

I enjoyed this so much!! I applaud you for venturing here from the faraway land of 2020's rap! Imagine being these guys after Syd left and trying to figure out what to do next! Syd went on to record two solo albums with help from the band members - and there are a few other tunes from that era that never hit an LP that are worth hearing. Scream Thy Last Scream & Vegetable Man come to mind... (Pure Syd Barrett brilliance) "Relics" has most of the early singles, some of which are truly great. The next few albums after Piper are understandably uneven, but contain some brilliant mind-expanding stuff! I love side one of Saucerful of Secrets (Introducing David)! SO chill and so spacy (up to the last track). Side two has Syd, feeling jilted and writing about it on the final track. "Ummagumma" is... well... out there. It has a great live version of Astronomy Domine. Speaking of mouth effects... "Several Species of Small Furry Animals In a Cave and Grooving With A Pict" on Ummagumma is pure mouth and tape effects. "More" is a movie soundtrack with a few good cuts including the hardest thing they ever recorded - "The Nile Song." Atom Heart Mother has the all-instrumental 24-minute Atom Heart Mother Suite that presages the similarly proportioned Echoes (which you should ABSOLUTELY hear!!). Some nice tracks on the soundtrack "Obscured By Clouds" which with its first use of synth hints at DSOTM. And then, of course, you have the rest... www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/pink-floyd-recorded-their-debut-album-right-next-to-the-beatles.html/

I’m a huge fan of Syd Barrett, love his guitar work and voice. I also love that you mentioned collages - as an artist Barrett specialised in collage, and applied that approach to his lyrics. You have great insight!

No it wasn't. Syd came into the already formed band of Roger Waters and co. Syd renamed the band pink Floyd when they went to a gig that had a band the same name as their early band name. They couldn't have two of the same named bands on the setlist, so on the spur of the moment he renamed them pink Floyd

I always interpreted the scarecrow in this song as a metaphor for a soldier. Like that's why he's black and green (not usually colors I think of when I picture a scarecrow in my head). Also "the wind cut up rough and nice ran around in the ground" where "cut up right l rough" is delivered like a machine gun. More stuff in it that points to this, but it's an interesting way to look at the song. Not only was it the 60s putting Vietnam in the forefront, but at least Roger Waters (and is bet he's not the only one) had a father who died in WW2.

YOUVE GOT TO LISTEN TO SYD’s SOLO ALBUM “The Madcap Laughs” . Especially if you like Chapter 24 . Songs like “golden hair” remind of that. Plenty of psychedelic stuff and interesting writing, while coming off a little folkier.

i’ve still yet to see anyone react to Syd’s solo albums in their entirety. It really changes one’s perspective on Syd’s music. He was Pink Floyd’s most versatile songwriter, and he was the first one to write really dark lyrics, not Waters. Waters is always taking credit for the things Syd started.
