Now watch Heart with John's son Jason play this at the Kennedy Center Awards. The musicians honored never know who us going to play what song. That same night singer-songwriter Carole King was honored and Aretha Franklin sang "(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman." Carole co-wrote it with her then husband and Aretha was the first to record it on her soul music debut in 1967. Carole re-did it for her monster selling album Tapestry in 1971. If you want a rabbit hole that will fill most of the rest of the year, try Rush. If the vocals don't bother you, the music should carry the day. And starting with their second album they replaced the drummer with lyricist Neil Peart who is with John at the top of greatest rock drummers lists. Robert Plant on harmonica on When the Levee Breaks.

Nice. Is PG their "White Album," then? Not just cos it's double, of course, but cos of the SPECTRUM of it, the Range...Beatles had "Honey Pie" and "Helter Skelter" in that particular magnum opus. Zeppelin has, on PG: From the beer-spilling honkytonk groove of "Boogie With Stu" to the bone-crunching urgency of "In my time of dying," oh, and throw the Astral Funk of "In the light" in there as well. just: WOW.

Some fun facts about the album: Black Dog uses very complex time signature changes and the main GUITAR riff was written by bassist John Paul Jones Battle of Evermore had guest vocalist Sandy Denny singing with robert, with lyrics based on Lord of the Rings (JPJ on guitar and Jimmy on Mandolin) Stairway to Heaven is by far the bands most appreciated and well known song, with non sensical lyrics from robert Misty Mountain Hop’s lyrics have referenced to The Hobbit, and are about an incident of the police busting hippies for weed possession Four Sticks’s title comes from the fact that bonhams used four drumsticks in the recording When the Levee Breaks is a cover of a 1929 song. The drums were recorded in a big round stairwell with the drums at the bottom and the mics at the top, with added reverb and echo effects. The drumbeat remains the most sampled in hip hop history. LZ IV as a whole is often considered the bands best album

Ok because of this video I like ‘Going To California’ a whole lot more than I did before. Great song, you said it. And correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t When The Levee Breaks a cover of a really old blues song ? Those police sirens you were hearing were Robert Plant on harmonica. I still can’t get over watching you hear ‘Stairway To Heaven’ for the first time. I’ve heard it a million times and even that song can wear you out. But watching you hear it for the first time really brought back what made that song so perfect in the first place.

The song Rock & Roll was an extra, thanks to Bonham, & it was written & recorded in about 30 minutes. On the song Four Sticks, Bonham was playing with 4 sticks, 2 in each hand. He was getting frustrated with the timing, & trying to play with 4 sticks. He took a break from it, & started ponding out the beat to Rock & Roll, & then we also got Rock & Roll on the spot. Four Sticks sadly was only played live once, & it’s only audio, would have loved seeing him play. The Battle Of Evermore, is in reference to Lord Of The Rings, the only song to have another vocalist singing, Sandy Denny a folk singer, using her beautiful vocals. Stairway To Heaven, a must see live MSG (1973), is & has been considered the best Rock song of all time. It has been played more then any other song, & has been number one or two on top lists of 100 to 500 song lists, for over 50 years. If you really love Bonham’s drumming, you need to watch his 20 minute drum solo live, called Moby Dick. That solo shows why he’s the greatest drummer ever, to think he plays that over 200 times, during 3 to 4 hour long nonstop concerts is amazing. Page is the greatest guitarist, he needs to play like needing to breath, & he certainly does especially in the lives. Plant is the greatest vocalists, his range tone & textures, suit each song as needed. JPJ amazing on bass keyboards & mandolin, & anything else needed. When The Levee Breaks, that’s Plant on the harmonica, & he plays it so beautifully. He only plays it on a couple songs, which is to bad, wish it was a few more. Yes not a bad song really on any album, maybe a couple not everyone’s favorites, but certainly don’t suck. All four each not just GOATS, but The GODS of music. I’m so glad you are loving them, & so many others your age, don’t mind the long songs either. Thanks for your reaction

Stairway to Heaven defined Rock Radio in the first half of the 70s because it was played daily for years. Stairway was played on radio so often that even LZ got tired of it. Later in life, Page admits it's their masterpiece. Page wrote the music. Plant added the lyrics almost immediately when he heard it. I think it's the greatest song from the rock era. After all these years and countless hearings, I still enjoy listening to it. There is a Led Zeppelin tribute at the Kennedy Center where the group Heart performs Stairway with the members watching except Bonham. I know you would love it.

I absolutely LOVE Led Zeppelin, & have for about 50 years, there’s a couple songs I don’t care for either. Compared to other bands, there’s a hell of a lot more songs to love. LZ 3 got criticized heavily by critics, but then critics back then never said anything nice about them. Critics & media lied about them, that that Zep rarely gave interviews, & wouldn’t do TV. Their fans loved them & we still do, imagine that, in our 60’s & 70’s & we are still rocking to them. Yes you do need to see Since I’ve Been Loving You live at Madison Square Gardens (1973), when you pick the video, under it it says something like AC/DC that’s the best camera views. The live of that is so amazing, their lives are actually better then the studio, more solo & some added vocals. They loved playing live for their fans, so they gave them extra.

Btw the reason Jimmys guitars sound like that is cause he did layering “multi-tracks”, so he would record the same guitar lick like 3 times and play them over eachother

Also I maybe talking a bit too soon, but the band I pray you’ll listen and react to soon is Rush, their first album actually sound a lot like Rush

So awesome to see you discovering these classics bro! I'd encourage you to keep going with Led Zep, for years I've felt that even though Led Zep 4 might be objectively their best, Houses Of The Holy is my favourite. They were really having fun with that one

"Been a long time since Book of Love" is a nice little call back to the 50s song. "Oh I wonder wonder wonder wonder... who, who wrote the Book of Love????" It wouldn't be the only time songwriters would reference that iconic classic in thier songs. I don't know why, but I love that.

Oh mannnn imagine being able to listen to Stairway to Heaven for the first time, so jealous. You have to add the the live version from The Song Remains the Same, one of the greatest live performances of all time.

I don't think anybody has ever said anything bad about this album. There's a lot of things I wish I an experience again as I did the first time.: A Big Mac, Empire Strikes Back and Led Zeppelin IV.

Glad you truly enjoyed this album! Their next album “Houses of the Holy” kicked them up to the stratosphere. Jimmy focuses his efforts in composition on the album, and it shows on the first three songs . they are absolutely masterpieces, and you will be blown away yet again. And John Paul Jones with his piano work on “No Quarter“ will mesmerize you. You’ll get to hear their ensemble chops as they start to get funkier with their sound, pulling from James Brown and reggae styles, in their own way. They are not so heavily influenced by the blues so much on this album, but they open up their sound, in a most glorious way to become more worldly. And then, of course, is the double album “physical graffiti“. They recorded too many songs for a single vinyl album, so they decided to dust off some of their unreleased recordings, to fill up a double album. And it does not fail to impress all the way through. I’m pretty sure you will love that album along with Houses Of The Holy just as much as IV. They are testaments to just how good rock music can sound when all the cylinders are firing. They were an engine. By the way, after completing your reaction to Houses Of The Holy you might want to consider watching their 1976 film called “The Song Remains The Same“. They are not actors, and they are definitely not the wacky characters that the Beatles portrayed in their movies, but they were allowed to film a short fantasy sequence, including their manager, Peter Grant. Visually speaking, they look exhausted because they are at the end of their 1973 tour, but it is still a remarkable document in time to see how, they interacted with each other on stage. Worth watching, and worth your. I recommend doing this before moving onto physical graffiti.

The * start--stop, start--stop * style of the song "Black Dog" was inspired by a song called "Oh Well" by Fleetwood Mac.

I consider Plant 🌱 the male Janis Joplin! He can vary his vocals so much it’s amazing what he can do and only JJ had that kind of power. In my humble opinion. 😮

PLEASE DO THE VELVET UNDERGROUND NEXT!!! Arguably the most famous band that didn’t actually make it big at the time, but became HUGELY influential as time went on…start with the Banana album: ‘The Velvet Underground and Nico’.

Paused at 20:06 just as "Stairway" ends and I have to make this comment. It's amazing to thing just how much the song "Stairway to Heaven" kicks ass and rocks considering the drums don't come in until the 5th verse!

Like I said on your first Zeppelin reaction...when you listen to them thru the years, you will see their growth. This album was THE. SHIT. I told ya, I, II, IV, and Physical Graffiti are my deserted island set of Zep. Houses of the Holy is damn fine in its own regard, a helluvan album. But not quite deserted island material, for me, anyway. Knew you'd dig this one...everyone does. Great reaction, man. I can't even remember the first time I heard this shit. 😂😂😂 F'k'n' long time ago. As I mentioned in reply to someone's comment above, if you wanna check out a killer harmonica tune, check out "Whammer Jammer" (Live Full House version) from J Geils Band. Magic Dick on harmonica was a madman.
