FIRST REACTION to AMORPHIS (Amongst Stars) ⭐️🤘🔥 

It was me. I'm the one that made the birthday request. Ha ha. Thanks for doing it, by the way. As for Anneke. As others have said, she's one of the pioneers. Also, technically you already heard her once. She was the pre-recorded vocals on the Devin Townsend "Kingdom" song you did. Amorphis started out as an atmospheric doom/death band that quickly started adding more prog and rock influences with each album. The guitar player was their original vocalist on their first two releases (with a guest vocalist on the second album for 'clean' singing). After that, they got a full time clean singer and their guitar player did the occasional death growl stuff. Eventually, that clean singer left and they got the guy you saw in the video. At that point, the guitarist stopped doing vocals altogether and their current frontman handled clean singing and growls.

Amorphis - The Bee

Now that you've done Nightwish and Amorphis, it is time for one of the greatest (Finnish) bands out there: Wintersun. "Time" and "Sons of Winter and Stars" - Live Rehearsal @ Sonic Pump Studios. Trust me on this :D

The female vocalist is legend-for-hire Anneke van Giersbergen. She's a trailblazer for European female metal singers. Started in The Gathering before going solo and doing lots of collaborations. She's done individual tracks with Amorphis, Moonspell, some stuff with Aryeon, guested live with Within Temptation, no doubt many more. Her most truly epic work (imho) is with Devin Townsend. Try Grace, live at Retinal Circus, or Hyperdrive live from the By A Thread concert series.

Not gonna lie, I'm living for all of the Finnish content on your channel. So many good songs and bands I never though would ever get reaction videos, let alone analysis. Love this channel, but you already know that. :D

Anneke is beautiful with a voice that suits a beauty. She has exactly the qualities I and a songwriting colleague were looking for but never found many years ago. It's not difficult to find a good vocalist but it's difficult to find someone who has "that".

Yaaay, more Finnish bands on your channel! ☺️ I'd suggest you to also check out a band called Insomnium, and songs like "Valediction" and "While We Sleep" 🖤

As a lover of the Finns this made me very happy. You should try "The Bee", "House of Sleep" or "Silver Bride.". Amorphis have been around for a long, long time actually (since the early 90s) and switched styles a fair few times as well as vocalists before they settled on their current sound. The really early work is actually straight up death metal, then they went 70s prog/psychedelic for a while and left metal, but when current vocalist Tomi Joutsen came in they brought back some of the metal elements and growls. I think their current era is definitely their strongest (from Eclipse onward, when Tomi joined).

If you want to check out more Amorphis, I recommend "The Bee." It's a great song for sure. It's a lot more on their heavier side.

Yay! Quick Click! The female singer is Anneke van Giersbergen; it was hearing her band The Gathering that convinced Floor to sing metal - thanks Anneke! She now has her own band VUUR and does a lot of solo work and collabs like this one. She appears sometimes with Arjen Anthony Lucassen (Ayreon). Fabulous singer. Great review. Check out "The Bee". You'll love it!

Thank you I have a long list of suggestions : - for a more middle eastern sound you should check out Orphaned Land, it's a great Israeli band, listen to Like Orpheus (the video means a lot to me as I'm a muslim hijabi girl) - Apocalypse Orchestra is more of a medieval metal, they only have one album so far and it's amazing - Skàlmöld is an icelandic band that also did a concert (two actually) with an orchestra and it's absolutely epic, you can see that the musicians really enjoy themselves - Wolfheart is another finnish band by another very talented Tuomas, it's (or was?) a one man band, it's melodic death so a bit heavier than what you usually listen to but it's worth it - And plague flowers the kaleidoscope by Ne Obliviscaris !!!!!!! Listen to this it will blow your mind, it's part of the curriculum at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music I'd also love to hear you talk about some of your favorite songs and bands :D

Tomi Joutsen is one of my favourite male vocals. I found that Hellfest 2018 was a great live recording of Amorphis' set, if you are interested in seeing them playing live. I would love for you to check out The Bee or Silver Bride. Anneke van Giersbergen is incredible as well - she is frequently a guest on a lot of other musician's projects, but check out her own stuff with Vuur.

Anneke and Tomi are a delightful combination. I think Tomi has such a damn smooth clean vocal and then he just pulls those roars out. Can confirm he sings with that level of modulation live. They started out as death doom/melodic death metal, which is probably the mixing you're noticing, I find they do a great job of mixing the wall of sound effect of doom metal with the more melodic motifs. Final thing from me: React to the bee it's my fave by them.

Amorphis has been around since early 90'ies and they are really versatile. Their lead singer Tomi Joutsen has (for my opinion) best low growls. They are so deep. If you listen Death of the King or The Bee you can hear it really clearly.

Congratulations, you've just met another one of the four Dutch "queens" of metal (your first one, obviously being Floor). She inspired all the other three as well as many other metal female vocalists. The remaining two, by the way, are Simone Simons from Epica (another great symphonic metal band you should DEFINITELY listen to) and Sharon den Adel from Within Temptation (they started as gothic/symphonic metal but have since turned more rockish). All of them are friends and have collaborated in several occasions. Sancta Terra is an Epica song featuring Floor, Somewhere is a Within Temptation song featuring Anneke and The Valley of the Queens is an Ayreon song featuring Floor and Anneke. All of them well worth a listen. Also, as many others have suggested, you should definitely check out Anneke's first band, The Gathering (their most famous song is Leaves) as well as her collaborations with Devin Townsend (Grace and Ih-Ah, for example). (PS. I suggest you start with Epica and go for either Sancta Terra live with Floor or Consign to Oblivion to get a better idea of they're capable of ;)

Amorphis is one of my favs!! My husband's band got to open for them for two shows in early 2017 as part of their tour in Canada. Two more songs to listen of theirs would be Sampo or Skyforger from the Skyforger album

The flute was in fact tin whistle played by none other than Chrigel of Eluveitie.

I dig the use of the extreme vocals in this song FAR more than when that's all that's going on. It really brought impact and helped the song stand out. And, I mean, Anneke is just great.

There is one thing wrong with the harmonizing of Floor and Anneke in Ayreon's Valley of the Queens...... It's about 15 min to short.

The singer Tomi Joutsen is from my home town, he was a youth worker when my sister-in-law was youth centre age, I've seen him perform with his first band in mid 90s in my school and more recent years in the supermarket buying groceries with his kids.

As you can see, most of us love our Anneke van Giersbergen. If you want see more of her I can suggest you the song that inspired so many young females singers, Strange Machines - The Gathering, with the young Anneke. Also, you can see Floor Jansen sing with her model in the show of Ayreon. Most popular it's the song Valley of the Queens

The guest lady here, Anneke, was a major influence for Floor to become a metal singer, so we should really be thankful to her (and her band The Gathering) As for Amorphis I've listened to this whole album and it's amazing, at some point I will have to checkout their previous work. And BTW they are touring Europe with Nightwish after the COVID is over (sadly for me they don't do the South American leg)

I love that I'm rediscovering old favorites thru their new material and thru your analysis, Chase. My introduction to Amorphis was My Kantele, when I was 16 or 17, although it was a few years old by that time. 😅 From what I'm hearing now, I might have to work through the back catalog! ❤️

I've loved Amorphis for a long time, one of those lucky discoveries. For a band who've been around so long and have released so many quality albums I've always been dumbfounded that they're not bigger than they are.

i hadn't heard this before but the drums are so cool! i loved how, even though the time signature has an odd number of counts per measure, the drummer's doing his snare accents on every other beat, so ONE-two-THREE-one-TWO-three-ONE-etc. i'm not sure if i've heard that anywhere before, but it gave the song a super unique feel. at first it almost made me think they were switching back and forth between 3/4 and 2/4 time. great song.

Amorphis is one of a kind. They draw lyrical inspiration from the Kalevala, 19th century work of poetry from Finnish folklore and mythology. You should check out their other songs, like "The Bee", "Silverbride" and "Death of a King".

That is Anneke van Giersbergen. She used to be the lead singer for The Gathering and doing lots of collabs with other bands. She is an amazing singer. I strongly recommend you search 'Ayreon - Shores Of India' the live version from the Electric Castle concert ( maybe also do a reaction to it :D )

Just fyi, the flutework on that song (and other songs from that album) was done by none other than Chrigel Glanzmann vom Eluveite's fame. He has worked with them on their last two records. it also might be of interest to you that the Amorphis' vocal producer used to be Marko Hietala from Nightwish. Both bands seem to be good friends with another as they are planning on touring together for the second time already. Hope that I'll be able to see them at the end of the year. And fwiw, I'm not going there because of Nightwish, but because of Amorphis. (love both, but as far as I'm concerned, Amorphis are one of the all time greats

I recommend the old 90's Amorphis. Especially the album The Land of Thousand Lakes is a masterpiece. My favourites from the album are Elegy and My Kantele (❤️!!!!). By the way, kantele is the national instrument of Finland. 😊 My Kantele tells a compelling story of what is a kantele made of.

The Bee is well worth checking out. The whole Queen of Time album is great though. Daughter of Hate is probably my pick. For a more folk-type sound, Tree of Ages from their previous album is excellent. Also just going to leave this here - they're supporting Nightwish in the winter. Tickets booked. (Please, world, let this event happen.)

There is only one Anneke Van Giersbergen. There is a Dianne Van Giersbergen, but they aren't related. Dianne Van Giersbergen sings with Ex Libris. But she and Anneke have both sung on Ayreon records. And Tomi Joutsen has a fantastic voice. Try "Death Of A King" by Amorphis. 🤘

You should introduced yourself to another amazing finnish band: Poets of the Fall. His voice is like a wam knife slicing through butter... Whatta metaphore!! But so true!! Songs like Carnival of Rust, War, Locking up the sun, My dark disquit, Dancing on broken glass or a slower one Where do we draw the line, Cradled in love, Moonlight kissed.

Love some Amorphis! Had not heard this track before. Since you have stepped into the realm of melodic death metal, I think you would enjoy some of Opeths older work.

Anneke van Giersbergen is a legend of female fronted metal bands in Europe and Latinamerica... many great singers like Floor Jansen, Simone Simons, Marcela Bovio or Cristina Scabbia say that she was one of the most great inspiration in order to join to the world of metal music... Mandylion, her album with The Gathering is iconic... Amorphis, great band btw you must react to first albums like Carelian Isthmus and Tales from the Thousand Lakes, mostly doom metal albums with some death metal touches, specially the first one... 🤘😎

Anneke is an absolute trailblazer, incredible musician. Amorphis' compositions are always great, too. PS: the guy that does the growls in Eluveitie (Chrigel) did the flute parts for this song!

Finally some Amorphis! Together with Insomnium, Ensiferum and Wintersun it's part of my personal quartet of favorite finnish meldoic-death metal bands. They are such a great live act and my last band I saw live in 2020. As with all prog-related bands it needs some time to get into and then every song is a treat. One of my favorites and quite underrated song is 'Brother Moon'

The Bee by the Amorphis is a must to react🤘

You should check out Anneke's work with The Gathering. They had a pretty unique sound. Their two most popular albums (Mandylion & Nighttime Birds) is what could best be described as "atmospheric doom metal". I haven't really heard any other band that sounds like they did on those albums.

Amorphis has been around about 30 years now and it is amazing how they keep evolving all the time. There's plenty of good songs around, but I would also suggest one of their newest production, The Bee.

Great reaction Chase. Love how you filet a track on the go. Anneke's vocal qualities are indeed quite unique and you're only very superficially scratching the surface here. I'd love to see you check one of her more signature live performances with The Gathering to get some full insight in both her and TG's musical talents and uniqueness. Her repertoire is massive so be picky. Best focus on their TG25 show with songs like 'Travel'. Enjoy!

I've been on a musical journey around the world this year. This makes it so I have listened to stuff from all over Europe. I have been loving Japanese rock and metal, but just today added Tunisia to my list. The band is Myrath and the song is Believer. Musical discovery has been the best part of 2020 for me.

They supported Nightwish a couple of tours ago and they're joining them again, all being well, this winter :)

That sweetness in the guitar work is something of a distinguishing feature of Amorphis, along with the duality of Tomis vocals. His screams are some of the darkest around imho, while his cleans are very clean

Very cool song. Loved the 3/4 time signature and epic key shifts. And her voice was so sweet and beautiful! Sometimes the lighter brassier female vocals get on my nerves (thinking of some of the stuff you hear in pop these days) but her voice was very nice and expressive.
