@@DoesNotInhale Skrillex helped changed a lot of music, both with his solo dubstep and EDM, to his production. He even has good post-hardcore/screamo with From First to Last.
15:12 I second this. I feel skrillex's reputation as "the wub wub robot fart guy" is one he doesn't deserve at all. Out of the mainstream dubstep era, I found some of his work was the stuff that aged by far the best, some of which I still enjoy to this day. In the music production community, skrillex is almost worshipped for his crystal clean mastering and sound design, which you can hear if you listen back to tracks like Try it Out or Bangarang. That being said, it doesn't seem like he's the best at organizing collabs that he really meshes well with, especially in DGTC, and please remember that skrillex is not personally responsible for AJR.
@@avik9661 I regret to inform you, my good zoomer, that dubstep before Skrillex was robo wub wub UK garbage. Though the flavor may be different, it hasn’t actually changed much.
the history and evolution of dubstep into brostep is one of my absolute favourite music topics so skrillex dipping back into the genre some classic uk dubstep fans considered him to have contributed to have destroying is so interesting to me. i also love four tet.
I didn't know much about dubstep and its origins besides knowing some tracks here and there, who skrillex was and some artists like the bug. I knew something happened for dub and skrillex to be so different yet share a lineage. Then I saw that timbah on toast video, by the end I was actually mad, heartbroken and nostalgic for a genre I didn't even actively seek out before. It's nice to see skrillex reflecting on his legacy.
Joker is the reason Skrillex had a career. He's up there with Burial in terms of influence in electronic dance music. And imo that song is one of the standouts of the album
Tears is one of the best dubstep, maybe even electronic in general, tracks I have ever heard. I was even impressed that my headphones could produce sounds like that
Quest for Fire having a cool surrealist painting as a cover and Don't Get Too Close being a generic-looking Pixar-esque mofo really speaks volumes about the material on both albums
I really appreciate you giving an EDM artist a shot, but as someone who's been deep into dubstep since 2014, dubstep is not dead. There's so many incredible artists right now but because people hear dubstep, they think of 2010 Skrillex and instantly call that sound dead because they never saw the sound grow. Think about it, it's been a really long time in music since there was a new genre of sound before EDM/Dubstep. Of course things aren't always gonna age, the genre itself is like 20 years old. And the people who are associated with dubstep stopped making it a while ago and went mainstream, so people think it's over, but it's not.
Yeah it's always a bit funny whenever I hear "dubstep is dead" or opinions about heavier electronic music being irrelevant. I think that people forget that things still exist even when they're not in the spotlight of pop culture. Some of the best produced and interesting music has come from the electronic music genre over the past 10 years.
I would love to see his reaction to artists like Space Laces or Chime. the sound design alone for them is really something to behold, and I cannot understate how many new dubstep artists absolutely blow the generic wubby 2012 brostep sound out of the water. the genre definitely evolved and keeps giving us mind-blowing bangers.
@@asongeveryday Yes, but I feel we gotta work up to Space Laces a bit. His Glitch Hop style is still a bit of an acquired taste, but once you get it you absolutely love it. I've heard some of Chime's stuff too but it's been a while for me.
@@WiloPolis03 Right, and some artists I've heard actually prefer that. It makes it feel more memorable when you stumble across an artist you love rather than some mainstream stuff shoving it in your ears and telling you to enjoy it.
@@wheniztheendMost dubstep is about distorting sound so much...they basically become square waves??🤣you either just started making music or you're trolling
Correction there Brad, dubstep is very much not dead, much like how the older dubstep scene kind of vanished after Skrillex brought in the brostep sound, what has been left behind are essentially three or four major directions that are derived off both brostep and its lesser talked about cousin, riddim: Future riddim, tearout, colour bass, and modern hybrid trap.
Why a dude as unlikable as Ronnie Radkie has simps I have no idea. At least Nicki Minaj, Eminem, and even Chris Brown have some kind of talent. What the hell is Ronnie's appeal?!
@wooyaa8152 Same - QFF is for listening and vibing/partying to the music, DGTC is for vibing/chilling with friends and letting the music fade into the background. (Although QFF > DGTC all day everyday)
It seems like a lot of the problems with DGTC is just that it's not what you'd expect from skrillex. especially after Quest For Fire is a solid raw comeback album while DGTC seems to be made to be more poppy and mainstream
Dubstep isn't dead. Also skrillex didn't create dubstep. This album is amazing and skrillex went back to more UK dubstep roots (where dubstep was really first made). Joker was an OG dubstep producer. I hope im not the only person who thinks you should look into more UK EDM and dubstep. Once again DUBSTEP IS NOT DEAD
Haven't listened to neither albums, but the Quest For Fire snippets actually got me super hooked. You can hear the UK Garage influence. Going to listen to this tomorrow.
Quest For Fire is such an amazing album and one of my favorite albums of this year so far. As for Don’t Get Too Close, I’ll admit that coming back to it, it’s starting to shrink on me quite a bit…
Bradley, saying the words "Dubstep is Dead" is primo cringe, lots of good inventive stuff out there and it's actually having a bit of a creative renaissance in some pockets, dubstep is mad sick bro edit for recommendations: SVDDEN DEATH, Infekt, Space Laces, Hukae. And that's just scratching the surface
bruh dubstep is not dead the sound has evolved so much. I recommend that you listen to the Halycon Enchanted Vol. 1 compilation as it birthed a new dubstep sound called "future riddim" which combines melody with heavy and crazy sound design
I hate it when I hear people say that dubstep is dead. Just because the genre is no longer mainstream does not mean it doesn’t exist. Also the dubstep of today is nothing like the dubstep of ten years ago. The genre has evolved and changed so much since then and there are so many amazing producers.
@@DoesNotInhale they definitely popularized it and color bass doesnt count cause its a whole different thing. I mean I7 and oolacile way back were doing it but they released on halcyon in the future
I agree that Halcyon releases are dope AF but it doesnt make dubstep - brostep -- colour bass less dead...The best artist from there have like 50k streams - month on spotify, its dead AF. And its sad when I look at reddit and I see a lot of young talented producers geting into these generes and waiting to eventually blow up, but I dont think thats gonna happen to soon. I mean, music is ciclic, probably like in years or decades someone will ressuct the dubstep vibe and blow some songs, but I dont think its gonna be a thing.
@@venom_mist yeah i was grinding the dubstep and bass music scene for years but its just not possible to blow up to the mainstream i get that. thats why im producing stuff for rappers now
Don't Get Too Close at first sounds a bit generic, but i think with a couple listens, just how clean the production is is sensational. Every track to me has at least one element that really sets it apart from the average pop rap, and the features work really well in the first half. The second half tho feels like every feature is the wrong one.
I feel like if you're a fan of any of those first album songs, you'd like BMTH's highly experimental album "Music to listen to~dance to~blaze to~pray to~feed to~sleep to~talk to~grind to~trip to~breathe to~help to~hurt to~scroll to~roll to~love to~hate to~learn Too~plot to~play to~be to~feel to~breed to~sweat to~dream to~hide to~live to~die to~GO TO"
Happy people are loving Quest For Fire as much as I am. I've relistened several times and still get hyped from the songs. Don't Get Too Close is a pretty solid project and I think it shows Skrillex can make a good pop album! He definitely needs to strengthen his songwriting muscles though and give more direction to his features, but it has me hopeful for his future output. I can easily see a future album with a more confident/refined approach to its songwriting that could be something truly amazing.
not about the album but i feel like your videos are getting funnier and funnier. like i get some real genuine laughs from a lot of how you interact with chat now and i feel like youve really grown as a creator !!
Quest For Fire is Skrillex demonstrating his mastery over sub bass as a producer, in a variety of forms. Bass house, UK dubstep, hybrid trap, whatever the subgenre, it still has that sub bass thesis to tie it all together. Don't Get Too Close has nothing to tie it all together besides a general vibe of "lower energy" and it really hurts for that. Skrillex's greatest strength is his production. QFF utilizes that production skill as its uniting element, and DGTC feels like it wants to utilize it too, but it always feels so forced so it can still fit under the umbrella of Skrillex. If he wants to be a pop producer, he needs to cut ties with that EDM drop style for it to sound natural, because this ain't it.
Bobby Raps is the goat, you maybe know about Corbin (aka Spooky Black). They are really good friend. Bobby Raps ghost wrote alot of big songs aswell :)
honestly i think it's just a matter of having put out this really exciting and fun album, then following it up almost right away with one that just didn't hit those same marks (and maybe wasn't even intending to). i also kinda think that there are parts of dont get too close that almost sound like they're intending to hit the same vibes as quest for fire, which makes it really easy for the majority of people to listen to both albums and compare them directly to each other.
Brad, Dubstep isn't dead 🙁 It's like 10x more fleshed out than the mainstream stuff from 10 years ago and it has evolved into many different interesting sub-genres. And some of the most innovative and creative producers ever are active in the dubstep scene right now, e.g. SVDDEN DEATH, Muerte, Space Laces, beastboi or Hukae. If you think the sound is "dead", please consider giving these artists a chance and hear for yourself. No offense 🫶🏽
Quest for Fire is excellent and continues the: slow burn, productive come-away Skrillex has had from the classic yet dated style of 2012 dubstep. Has amazing sound design and cohesion. Don’t Get Too Close is weird for me, I only enjoyed about 4-5 songs on it genuinely, but that title track outro, man idk, it does something for me. Almost reminded me of how I felt back during that “old school” era. Guys talented tho, whether or not Skrillex is able to maintain a new generation of listeners or not, I’m all here for his return to the main stage.
I get it, Quest For Fire was his more producerly project, but Don't Get Too Close is his attempt at doing a Khaledesque project but with him actually producing, hence why he produced it but took a back seat and got big names.
For the record Skrillex was never really dubstep. He made brostep and complextro, both of which had more or less relation to the original dubstep movement but were basically completely different
It's definitely nothing like Burial but it def feels less out there and douchey than his old music. It's more down to earth and nice too. It doesn't provide the profoundness of the music I usually prefer or the creative depth, but it still sounds like he's kinda got back to the actual dubstep roots a bit and it feels more appreciative about the genre too. If Brostep is the equivalent of a dumb Jock, this is that Jock Maturing and developing more of a genuine tone.
Disappointed that you didn't do a thumbnail with you pointing to both albums with your arms crossed and a raised eyebrow. But this thumbnail is actually pretty close so props for that
goddammit, Quest For Fire is such a banger of an album holy- Tho Don't Get Too close however... it's something alright... aside a few tracks like Selecta that I can name I enjoy
Quest for Fire's cover art gives me 70's prog rock vibes. Might be that I forgot exactly how Argus by Wishbone Ash looked like, but that's what I'm going with.
Pretty sad to see the Anthony Green feature on such a stinker of a track, his solo work and Circa Survive are both excellent but people will be less inclined to check that out when you feature on something so bland.
