You obviously don’t appreciate his music but I think apart of it is because you really didn’t understand. When I hear this song I think of back stabbers. I believe Kurt Cobain was come and reveal who you really are.. hope you go back & listen to it again maybe get out of your comfy zone.
Kurt Cobain one of the forefathers of grunge! Also Jay Z sampled some of the lyrics in this song for Holy grail. The song is based of mental health and instead of trying to fit into society you "come as you are" (be yourself). People spend their whole lives trying to fit in with society that and they eventually hurt themselves to the point of going crazy and killing themselves. He made this song to tell people to simply be yourself, be the freak, the loser, or whatever your are and be at peace with it. Kurt struggled crippling depression, asthma, ADHD, and some chronic pains and he was a mess....not that many guys from that music scene is left.
grunge is a fashion statement, Nirvana is a punk rock band. they sound nothing like Pearl Jam or Alice in chains, two bands Kurt Cobain hated. Soundgarden would be a better comparison but those two are still very different bands. Nirvana is a mix of The Beatles, punk rock, and a little metal and some new wave. They sound more like The Pixies than any of the Seattle bands.
@ENDLESS NAMELESS No, he actually liked Eddie Vedder on a personal level, said Eddie was super nice.. He was friendly with the Alice in Chains guys as well. He did heroin with Layne Staley and Mike Starr when they were all booked for a show in Brazil.. but from a strictly musical perspective he hated those bands. This isn't my opinion, these are things Kurt Cobain said publicly. He didn't like that style of music. He did realize a lot of the same people that liked Nirvana liked those bands though.. for that reason he generally didn't make a big thing of it. But he actually did like Soundgarden. He never saw PJ or AIC as "competition". He struggled with fame and success to begin with; he probably would have preferred those bands to be more famous than he was.. in his letters, he said his dream was to play in a great band and not have to deal with the fame that came with it, like the Pixies. He saw AIC as a glam metal band that started wearing flannel to get famous. He called them "fake underground music". He thought they were posers. He saw Pearl Jam as a bland corporate rock band that was being pushed by the music industry to capitalize on the "grunge" aesthetic. You can look all of this up it's all on record. Cobain did a lot of interviews
@@waynetables6414 The flannel was a decision made by their label. They claimed to not want to do it, but trusted in their label about it being the way things were done. Nirvana had the same label and never bowed to the pressure to put on a fake persona to get famous. It's understandable why he would say what you quoted.
One of the first rock bands i started listening to and my favorite rift from them! The bass and guitar combo of this song is 🔥🤘 Awesome seeing you react to these bangers 🤘
@FgH When he said "his band" he meant Foo Fighters, which was originally Dave Grohl. It was meant to be a solo band after Nirvana disbanded making the Foo Fighters "his band" because he created it.
The lyrics, "Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach" were taken from a campaign in Seattle that encouraged heroin users to soak their needles in bleach after injecting to reduce the risk of spreading HIV. The phrase for the campaign was actually "If doused in mud, soak in bleach." The lyrics as used by Cobain could be about tolerating everyone no matter what they look like - black people being the "mud" and white people being the "bleach." In this song, Cobain sings over and over, "I don't have a gun." Less than three years after the song was released, he committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. This was an eerie turn of events, but it's unlikely that Cobain had suicide on his mind when he wrote the lyrics. The gun could be a reference to a time when Cobain's mother got mad at her husband (Kurt's stepfather) and threw his guns in a river. Cobain says he recovered some of them, sold them, and used the money to buy his first guitar when he was 15.
Nirvana producer Butch Vig says that this is one of his favorites from the album. He says that Cobain used the same effects pedal on his guitar that he used on "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to produce the "trippy, psychedelic, watery effect." Vig told NPR: "I think that song is about acceptance, and about misfits. You're cool no matter how screwed up you are. 'Come As You Are' is an ode to accepting someone for who they are."
See, this is why Cobain was one of if not the greatest lyricists of all time. His lyrics are so multi dimensional and you could interpret them in a myriad of ways. For instance, the way I interpret the lyrics "Come doused in mud, soaked in bleach, as I want you to be. as a friend" is in a more literal sense. Meaning You could be dirty(sinful, troubled) or you could be clean(A good person) and I'm going to accept you for you either way. It i think it pertains to the main message of the song this way. But, Like you said, there is always another way of interpretation and neither is wrong. That's the beauty of Cobain.
Kurt’s voice over the memoria part where he says “AND I DON’T HAVE A GUN” gives me chills P.S. to me, I’ve always felt the “I don’t have a gun” lyric to be as I’m not going to force you to be what I want you to be, but I’d be happy to take you just as you already are that’s just me
It's often hard to really identify the thoughts or ideas behind lyrics in a Nirvana track because a lot of it is very surreal, kind of dreamlike, and it often only makes sense in an abstract way where you have to fill in the gaps yourself. It's almost like that feeling when you're just about to fall asleep but not quite there, and you have bizarre and illogical thoughts that disappear when you try to focus on them.
I truly feel so blessed, so fortunate to have grown up with Grunge music, and definitely feel so lucky to have seen Nirvana in Concert 3 times. Still easily the greatest time for Music, and one of the Greatest, most influential Bands of all time.
Nirvana was all about the lyrics, and yet they refused to let their own interpretations hold a song back, and that is the beauty of it, they share a piece of their world, and people look through the hole and see what resonates with them, one song can tell many stories. Nirvana was music for change, whether it be anti-racism, sexual assault, mental illness, gun violence, corporate greed and wealth inequality.
It makes sense, if I heard this today for the first time I’d probably have the same reaction. It captured a mood and a vibe in the time that it came out, and I’ll always be able to feel that sense of nostalgia when I hear this song, so that why it’s great to me.
I don't think so. I think it could even be more relevant to day than ever, seeing our culture is chalk full of mental illness, drug addiction, societal acceptance, and being an outcast.
Tf are you talking about? I first heard this song some years ago and I absolutely loved it. He just didn't love it, but for me it's onw of the best songs of all time, despite not having heard it in the 90s.
Nirvana is my favorite band and has been so since 1992. There's something hauntingly beautiful about Kurt's voice. Their music has helped me countlessly thru the years in my darkest hour.
I love that you aren’t only stuck in one genre, but you go outside of the box to listen to other genres even if they aren’t your absolute favorite. I respect that about you👍🏻👍🏻.
This isn't really a modern day banger, it's classic rock. Nirvana is one of the most influential rock groups of all time and it's songs like this that paved the way for a lot of other bands.
Yeah but Nevermind is kind of the line between classic and modern rock. It's over 30 years old, but when you look at rock n roll from the 50s to today... Basically everything up to 1991 sounded one way, then Nirvanas nevermind is the first modern rock record by todays standards
A lot of the Seattle sound (grunge) was about drug/alcohol abuse, mainly heroin. I've always thought of this song as being under the influence and blindly trusting people who will just hurt you/use you.
Hey kept saying he’s doesn’t have a gun for multiple reasons but there’s a theory that he was saying that because he was having suicidal thoughts and he didn’t want anyone to worry but shortly after he did commit suicide by shootings himself in the brain
Hey bro, I’m from Australia and I just wanna say I appreciate your appreciation for music! I don’t really know what patrion is but you need to check out ‘Wild Eyes’ by Parkway Drive.
We need to do some old school right ... absolute #firesquad🔥 RIP ... legend ... what a nice morning and see layed reacting to a classic legendary piece like this one
Their songs were always weird to me lyrically I never knew wtf they were talking about. Also, I was a little disappointed to not see any comments about him using a gun to end his life when one of his most popular songs he sings “no I don’t have a gun, I swear I don’t have a gun” 👀
A lot of nirvanas songs are up to interpretation and Kurt cobain made it like that on purpose it’s actually genius. Some songs actually have a sort of loose meaning or meanings tied to them but for the most part you basically come up with the story on your own which is pretty 🥳🧱🥗🖍🥖🥛🫕🐔🧃
Right? They don't have any rhythm or rhyme-scheme. He's just grumbling words to an off tempo guitar riff. I'll never truly understand the Nirvana hype, but everyone has their style of music I guess...
The bass guitar here is what pulls this song all together. Nirvana is arguably the most influential band of the past 35 years- every alt-rock band has been influenced by them. This song grows on you with repeated listens- it's really a good expression of the 90s in a way. Oh, The drummer for Nirvana is Dave Grohl, the singer of Foo Fighters.
Man oh man the early 90's and the grunge that came with it was such an amazing time to become musically aware. Glad to see and hear you getting to experience what Kurt Cobain had to offer to us LayedBakDFR.
Swinging from the chandelier is an idiom that is often used figuratively to describe someone who is excessively extravagant, exuberant, or highly energetic in their actions or behavior. The phrase implies a sense of wild abandon or unrestrained enjoyment.
An amazing thing about much of the music in this time period is that the lyrics have MULTIPLE meanings. They are metaphorical and many times about multiple people or even everyone not just a certain central figure.
I used to think this song was referencing a drug deal gone bad, “come as you are” meaning “don’t look suspicious” and “I swear I don’t have a gun” either referred to an undercover cop or maybe robbery.
You should listen to Foo Fighters All my life, monkey wrench, times like these, the pretender.. really any of their songs. The lead singer is Dave grohl. Use to be the drummer for this band nirvana. He is a rock legend. One of my favorite musicians EVER.
Not gonna lie, I subbed for watching a hip hop centric guy reacting to rock and other genres . It’s very interesting to watch your reactions to these other genres
yoo amazing video you should listen to Plateau too if you'd like to have more impression regarding nirvana. Again great video have a nice day and focus on you on 2022
Some interpret it as a false comfort sort of song; "Come as you were, the way I want you to be," can be seen as past tense, "I don't have a gun" is probably a lie to get the person closer. This person is most likely a betrayer and the song's protagonist could be the would-be killer.
COME AS YOU ARE : BE YOURSELF, "I don't have a gun" means I won't shoot at you, I won't judge you, JUST BE YOURSELF & DON?T BE AFRAID... 'cause "I don't have a gun" -- That's how most people interpreted the lyrics _ Grunge Generational fenomenon: Be yourself, no matter what! Don't be superficial. Go deep
I think this song, and a lot of Nirvana’s music, was very much of the time. It’s tragic we never got to hear how their sound would have developed over the years had Kurt still been around, but we did get the Foo Fighters so I guess that’s something.
I think this is one of Nirvana's weakest tracks. They had so, so many great songs - this to me is their most milquetoast track. I'll take Smells Like Teen Spirit, Heart Shaped Box, Lithium, Aneurysm, Scentless Apprentice, School, Negative Creep, Sappy, Oh the Guilt, Milk It, and probably 60 other Nirvana songs over this one.
@layedbakdfr when he says ... come as you are .... and after he make the statement that he doesn't have a gun like 100 times .... is like saying ... dude I'm not a threat ... I won't bite that kind of stuff ... after he says ... come as I want you to be .. as a friend ... an unknown enemy ... at the end ... he is letting you in and declaring he don't have methods to defend himself , in reality ... he was pretty chill ... very harmless and calm about trouble...
Jarred Benton has a song called “As You Are” where he absolutely murdered this sample. I’m not super crazy about basic battle bars, but he did his damn thing on that one.
