The best collection b-sides ever by any band by many miles Why these songs never made it to the albums will still be a mystery..bought it in 94 and still enjoying every minute of it in 2023
I thoroughly enjoy your reactions to the Smashing Pumpkins. I guess it's just nice to see someone enjoy and appreciate this band as much as I have for the last 25 or so years. There's a story Billy tells where he met a girl at a party named Starla, inspiring to write the song of the same name. When he saw her again, he told her about the song, and she said "Thanks, but my name is Darla." 😂😂😂 Starla was recorded in Billy's apartment in Chicago, and during the quiet part in the middle you can hear an ambulance siren leak into the mix. I can't wait for your Mellon Collie reaction, you won't be disappointed. Heavy, sad, tender, bright, it has it all.
Not to be pedantic, but I think the ambulance siren leak was on 'Smoothe'. An irrelevance really... This was my first SP album and I fell in love with it before I even heard Gish, SD or MCIS. To this day my favourite band.🤟🤟
I was born in ‘94 and discovering this band a couple years ago was just such a blessing. Smashing Pumpkins were just a perfect cocktail of everything I grew up listening to. They were influenced by the classic rock giants my Dad introduced me to (Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Rush, etc.) while influencing almost every 2000s alternative bands I listened to as a kid. After falling head over heels for their first 3 records, discovering their B-side cemented them as arguably my favorite band ever. It’s easily my favorite record of theirs, I just could not fathom they had a full album filled with “throwaway” tracks this fucking good. There are songs on Pisces that are light years better than other band’s studio album singles!!! Anyways great reaction/review 🎸🤘🏼
Never stop doing the SP discography. I listened to all these albums as they came out and listening with you reminds of just how fresh they still are. Thank you, my friend. I hope you do Adore after Mellon Collie.
Always nice to see someone react to the pumpkins and enjoy them as much as I do! Whir has to be my favorite off of this album, and even one of my favorites from their entire discography
What I love about this album is that because the majority of it is B sides from their first two albums (the first half is Siamese Dream Era and after Obscured the second half is Gish era) so this has a mix of what I love about both of those albums. Also if you like James Iha’s voice you can look forward to him singing even more on Mellon collie, and on the closing track of the album every member of the band sings Foo
It’s refreshing to see your take on the sound of my youth. I highly suggest continuing at least through the Pumpkins 1.0 catalogue after Mellon Collie. You almost need to sail into The Aeroplane Flies High as the epic amount of b-sides from MCIS. Then you got Adore as a quieter acoustic/electric album and the grossly underrated Machina 1 & 2. Thanks for the insightful reviews!
Thank you @Tony Whitburn for giving your reaction to one of the greatest albums of all time. So many great songs and insight into what greatness we would be graced to see the band. Thanks again Buddy, Zeitgeist would be an interesting album to see your thoughts on; another great Pumpkins album, you’ve got plenty of them left to my friend!
James and Jimmy both have their own bands. Some of James's music is actually featured in The Sims 4. James has a few more songs scattered throughout the Pumpkins catalog. Both bands are worth listening to.
If you liked this, you should DEFINITELY react to "The Aeroplane Flies High", which is a box set of all the Mellon Collie B-Sides and Rarities. It was as big/long as Mellon Collie and every track was killer. But don't go with the Spotify version. It's expanded. You need to hear the original.
Always love your reactions. Smashing Pumpkins are prolific with their bsides. Tons of fantastic ones. And don't stop at Mellon Collie. Adore and Machina are vastly underrated imo.
One of Billy Gorgan’s favorites is an Oxford band by the name of Swervedriver. They had two albums out around the same time as Gish and Siamese called Raise and Mezcal Head. You need to check both of these out. Billy invited the ‘Swervies’ to tour with SP in ‘93. Turn up the volume and hold on for the epic ride.
I still remember buying this in a record store back in the day, fully believing that this was an official album release. I had no idea what b-sides even were at the time.
It's awesome seeing someone get so excited about this record... I loved it when it was released, has some of the best Pumpkins songs ever. Hello Kitty Kat, Frail & Bedazzled, Landslide (Stevie Nicks cover), and of course the amazing Starla. Speaking of, there's one performance of that song you NEED to see and hear. Put your headphones on and watch this masterpiece: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2kuWvNv7WV4.html I'm going to go watch your other Pumpkins reactions :D
Pisces Iscariot has a lot of interesting psychedelic-like guitar effects. The phaser on "Frail and Bedazzled," and "Plume," sounds really cool. Also, that long epic multi-track multi-layered guitar solo in "Starla." The drum solo at the end of "La Dolly Vita," is also amazing! I've always loved the b-sides that the Smashing Pumpkins released. By the way, James Iha has his old solo album. "Girl Named Sandoz," sounds like classic rock, because it's an Animals cover.
Hello Kitty Kat has been, pretty much, my favorite song since it came out. If I had only one song I could listen to for the rest of my life that would be it.
Great job on the review. This record has some hits and some near misses. All good tracks in their own way. It's also a perfect window of time for the pumpkins. Right before the explosion that would arrive with Mellon collie . Everything would change forever. Not all for the best. oh man though, the impending journey is a long yet rewarding one.
Just watched this and your Loveless reaction/review, have seen your Disintegration one before and need to catch up on a few others and am wondering how it is that nobody has requested or how you have not gotten around to Cocteau Twins yet? They were one of the progenitors of dream pop which massively inspired people like MBV and the Pumpkins, and even to an extent The Cure in a roundabout, contemporaries way as Robert Smith loves them and listened to them on his wedding day. Heaven or Las Vegas is regarded as their pinnacle by most, some would say Treasure but I would back up the Heaven or Las Vegas side for sure as they hit a peak there. It would be a great reaction if you have never heard it before!
James Iha didn't sing very often but when he did they were usually interesting. You should listen to '...Said Sadly' or songs off his own albums like 'Lover, Lover' or 'Silver String'.
Is Pastichio (intentional mistake) Medley on this ? It's a b-side from one of their singles I have. And by 'a b-side', I mean it's a 20+min track of quick cut edits of tiny parts of a hundred (a lot) unfinished/unreleased songs.
Nope, it was a later b-side - on the Zero single from Mellon Collie and included in The Aeroplane Flies High box. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Aeroplane_Flies_High
okay I’m really really sorry for all the requests of things you should react to, but pleasee react to “stratosphere” by duster!! It’s quite a journey and I haven’t been able to find anyone who’s reacted to it. It’s one of my all time favorites and I think you’d find it interesting :-) have a good one!! Edit: now that I think about it,, their music is kinda similar to Wilco :D
I’ve seen all your Deftones vids and there amazing reactions lol I’d check out there like Linus demo It’s not an official release but they are real demos right here in RU-vid
Would love for you to react to Duster's Stratosphere or Contemporary movement. It's slow-core alt rock. Simple songs but beautiful and authentic. Check them out!
I wish we could get a big push going for this. I know for a fact that 'Maladroit' is the single most underappreciated album in their whole catalog. Thanks for bringing it up.
I don't necessarily endorse taking any mind altering substances.... but if you happen to, you MUST close your eyes and just let Obscured wash over you while you're high...
on a nother note, your audio stopped during landslide. although this is not an original song, i prefer this version. it's night and day. Stevie nicks will always own the song, but billy makes it HiS own if only in this moment it's somehow simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time . curious to know your thoughts. since we lost the audio.
