I got some Ice Spiker Pro’s a while ago and had wanted to bust them out for ages but the good spring weather hadn’t allowed me too. It all changed yesterday when the Beast from the East arrived bringing snow and ice. I figured it was the perfect time to fit them and hit the trails….

Yesterday, mount two tires tubeless on tr rims without a sealant, just let them sit a little. Went for a walk for a hour and a half, came back and found one of the tire of the rim....)) one of its bead, the Kevlar bead failed....Lucky it wasnt on the road or trail....Good lesson, let the new tires to stay for a while before riding ;)

Well you really don't need the spiked tires after the first snowfall. You should keep your mud tires on until it's been back in plus celsius and frozen again so there's ice in there, thats where the studs come to play. :)

Clear some things up: -studded tries are for ICE, and, to some extent, MUD. they don't help you much in snow. -fat tires are for snow, might help a bit on ice -fat, studded tires are maybe the safest for really bad conditions of snow and re-freeze (re-freeze is often much slicker than "regular" ice) -studded road tires work pretty well on plowed trails and roads; the studs aren't full-time contact, so they don't wear down as fast, but they're there on cornering, or the wheels begin to slip. If it's really icy, you can deflate the tires some to bring the studs more into contact. I can vouch for studded road tires being worth the investment. You won't do well in deep snow, but the rolling resistance won't beat you to death on longer rides.

Try a wind proof breathable cover on the helmet. It makes an enormous difference keeping the noggin warm yet allows the sweat to escape. I see that in your shed you have a lot of helmets, so modify one for winter weather, doing cutouts for your camera and light mounts. For really severe Wyoming (US) winter riding, I use an insulated snow boarders helmet. I also have a dedicated winter bike, an old '84 Trek Single Track MTB retired to being a lowly ice commuter with Kendra 2" studded tires. The Swedes do bring an interesting item to the discussion with the potential for buzz-sawing tree roots and breaking soils.

-4°C is perfect winter temperature. We've had a lot of that in Oslo, Norway this winter :) But Ice Spiker Pro is just too skinny with 1-2 meters of snow in the woods :) So it's been Fatbike time here since December! But it's getting warmer, can't wait to get the trailbike out for a ride. Off course with 2.6" ISP :)

I've been winter riding for a long time here in Northern Ontario Canada. Minus four made me chuckle, as I've been out there in minus 35. We have a fair bit of slush in my neck of the woods, so I don't know how these particular tires would stack up. The trails are most likely too snow covered, and I'm not sure the snowmobilers will appreciate me on their trails. Might just go with a fat bike and call it a day. Good vid, will watch some more for sure. Happy New Year and happy riding!

HAHA love how you were like ok I got more snow in Canada, it was what I was thinking but it's still fun no less. Never had studded tires, but looking in to it so thanks for showing extra grip. Wonder how they do on ice with a layer of snow on top (or was there ice under your trail?)
@77bassett77
@77bassett77 6 лет назад
With ice spiker pros it's not a bad idea to ride a few kms on a hard surface at fairly low tire pressure. It seems to help with the studs setting in properly the interwebs are full of people who lose a lot of studs and it seems the problem is less prominent with the procedure above.

What would these things be like in mud? Pretty awesome I assume? We don't get much snow where I live, but our trails are incredibly slick over winter, heaps of clay and roots, considering trying some of these tyres. I would consider going out of my way to do a couple of days in the snow if I got some of these, but don't think I'd have a lot of fun on my worn Hands Damp.

if there is ice studded tyres is a must, I have Switched from Suomi Extreme 2.1 to Ice Spiker Lite Skin 2.25, huge difference, the Suomi tyre was too flat and had to be run att high pressure to not fold, and cornering was not great cus they are flat and narrow, but they were durable, but not tubeless, but now I run Spiker Lite Skin 2.25 tubeless, Cush Core , so I can ride as hard. But this winter 2019/2020 was quite mild so only few weeks with snow, and now it's no snow.

They’re called studded tires FYI. Studs won’t increase your traction by much on snow rather they help you on ice. A soft rubber compound and snow-specific lamelled knobs will create the snow traction...

#ScottyLaughland Just FYI you need to ride on the Ice Spiker Pros on low tire pressure (tubeless to avoid pinching) on asphalt/concrete for about 20miles to "bed" in the studs. If you don't do this the studs will fall out. I know you are sponsored so you can easily replace the missing studs or just get new tires but I thought I would let you know and others on here as well. I have been running Ice Spiker pro's for 2 winters and LOVE THEM! Especially on ice :)
@matthewalexander-brown3900
@matthewalexander-brown3900 6 лет назад
liquidSpin in cooler weather and ice packed snow you run lower pressure, not in wet heavy sticky snow, or - 4 Celsius. The pressure depicted in Scotty's video is ideal for the conditions.

Big fan of spiked tyres, living in Sweden and all... However after riding in snow for a number of years now, you realize how much they shred the nature. They leave marks on roots and rocks on the trail and in most cases the forest around Stockholm are classed as national parks, so leaving stuff in a worse state than you found it is a big nono. Most of the people i ride with have stopped using studded tyres in the forest opting for changing the route to someplace with more snow instead of ice. Spikes are useless in snow anyway. Gotta be a little more careful on the commute to and from the forest though... Love your vlogs, keep shredding!

Schwalbe tires are underrated, I would run Maxxis because I just followed the bandwagon, but Schwalbe tires I think just offer better performance and are overall better quality, I have the Schwalbe Pro 1 (Road), Nobby Nics, Magic Mary, and Hans Dampf and they have all been better that the Maxxis equivalent. Only thing I have found with all these tires is they are fast wearing
