You remind me of the very 1st Mcintosh peices I had. I live in Detroit however I found the peices on the side of a Main Street 4sale, I find out from the guy they'd been used in his uncles bar and were in bad shape were painted over including the wood cases It was a mc 2105, a c28 preamp and the environmental Equalizer. I had to sell them due to hardship. I currently have an mc 2100 ive decided to go ahead and sell. Great video thanx for sharing 🔥🙏🏾👍🏾👍🏾

What other speakers would you pair with this setup? I’m trying for a modern/vintage take on the sound. Thanks again! Keep the vintage Mac stuff coming!

You haven't lived until you laid eyes and hands on a Bose 1801 82 pound 250@8/400@4 ohms power amplifier with HUGE meters, bigger than the Mac's, and red LEDs for peak power readout. That was my first really serious amp driving four Bose 901s, two per channel, in the early 70s. You haven't heard prodigious fast bass since then until open baffle subs came into the fray.

You can fix graininess with a 2mm diamond shape from chocolate wrapper plastic with the foil paint coating. You have to glue it onto your tweeter domes on one point for best vibration (with PVA or water based glue so it can be removed). Iol Serious, l do it with gritty sounding full range drivers. Adds kHz and smooths out the sound. Silky treble, to match the grainy Mac amp.

Jay, I agree with what you said at the end, the distortion makes it sounds grainy. The tubey sound that we hear and like in tube gear is the distortion, tube distortion is easy to listen but SS distortion is intolerable.

Does this MC-2505 employ autoformers on it's output? I know that some of the Solid State Macs did. That might explain the "tubey" sound. 💡
@Jayiyagi
@Jayiyagi 3 года назад
yes they did and they still do on the modern ones (most of them). But the sound is definitely different haha. I guess that's why we have people preferring the older McIntosh sound and some preferring modern
@FireTriode
@FireTriode 3 года назад
@@Jayiyagi Agreed. Transformer interface/ saturation can play a large part in the overall sound. "Tube" sound has a lot to do with the transformers used. It also greatly helps to match the amp's output stage impedance to the speaker load. I sometimes use vintage Jensen autoformers with my OTL amp to drive electrostats (most of the time it's mated with my KEF LS-50s) and it allows the amp to "breathe" better.

Gotta disagree with your logic that being the first SS amp after a history of tube amps will sound more "tubey". The circuits are totally different and nothing from the tube amp that is carried over to the SS amp will make it tubier. If anything a lot of people think it took a few years for people to figure out how to make SS sound smoother and stay away from really early SS stuff (not talking about classic receivers from the 70s - those are sorted and sound great, more like SS from the 60s).
@mattbonaccio3522
@mattbonaccio3522 3 года назад
I agree with you and I think that's generally true of early solid state amplifiers. It bugs me when people compare 1960s solid state to tubes and say it sounds similar! I don't think that's the case, for the most part. BUT, you also should consider that McIntosh has a habit of using autotransformers on the output of their solid state amps, which, while not really equivalent to the output transformers of a tube amplifier, certainly do help to create that signature McIntosh sound which could be said to have a certain tube-y character in some ways...
