I began walking to get back into shape after a herniated disc put me out of work for four months. My aim was to get into shape to start running again, as I had been a runner my whole life. To my great surprise and joy, I fell in love with walking and never went back to running. That was four years ago and I've remained back pain free ever since. Great advice on this topic. Walk, walk, walk, then walk some more if you having back issues. Walk on, Frank

what did you do during the initial 4 months to get better?
@Anthony-yv4fg
@Anthony-yv4fg 2 года назад
@@kfallon4 you got to rest bro.. don’t aggravate it.. drink lots of water. Once it feels tolerable.. start walking in chunks.. stay in the pain free state or when your pain feels really tolerable. It takes time then you build. Read back mechanic from Stuart McGill as well. Shows you how to move well

Guys this is solid advice what they're giving here for back pain and sciatica. I literally healed all of my pain once I started a strict regimen of walking for 20 minutes a day on a treadmill for 5 days a week for two years straight. Not only did I heal my back significantly to a greater range of mobility, but I also lost tons of weight at the same time.

All of what you say is good. I also understand how easy it is to get somewhat sidetracked when talking about this subject because each individual and their situation is unique. My wife recently had low back surgery and one of the things that have really helped her is the Nordic Walking Poles. Her posture is so much better and the muscles employed in gait are starting to come back on line. The walker she used was good to a point but her posture was terrible. Invest in good Nordic Walking Poles!

Part of what i do for a living involves a lot of walking (dogs) up to 35 miles a week. My jobs have been canceled all year (Covid). I have been really sedentary much of the time for 9 months. I had extreme sciatica pain a few years ago - got the shot. I've been good until a couple months ago. I watched this video. I checked my posture with a broom stick, took a long, faster paced walk. Wow! I walked over 2 miles and didn't have to stop to sit down once! Amazing! ,,,,i believe i was having to stop before because my posture stunk and i was walking slow because of pain. Here i go...watching more of your sciatica videos tonight. You're my two most FAVORITE physical therapists anywhere!

It works. I have been operated three times for spinal stenosis and disc, neck and lower back . 1 time in the neck and 2 times in the lower back. Eaten Ketogan and Tramadol for ten years. It took me a month to stop it. And started walking, after 6 months I walk 8 Kilometers ( ca 5 US mil ) 5 times a week, with very little pain. So yes walk, start slowly, and take care of yourself. Thank you for your video, guys! My 11 year-old son is autistic (Asperger's) and has low muscle tone. Getting him to exercise is difficult at best; often he will go into a meltdown if I ask him to do something new or that he doesn't want to do. He likes walking on the treadmill - I first got him to do that by letting him watch RU-vid videos while walking; it's the only form of exercise he'll consistently do. Avoid cycling for sciatica. I had a herniated disc (l5-s1) in 2017 and 2022. The 2nd time it got so bad I couldn't walk. Fast forward to summer 2024 I took some misguided advice like this to cycle regularly and guess what...herniated again. Bob and Brad even mention in one of their pain maker videos to avoid cycling especially while still in recovery. Do not listen to this advice! Walking is the single best thing you can do. Follow Bob and Brads advice on walking.

Great tips. Lately I've been using a sciatica belt that a previous medical provider had ordered for me. Initially I didn't use it because it was a nuisance, but it helps with good posture. Since my sciatica pain flared up on a whole new level of unbearable pain, I'm starting to learn how important good posture is when you're suffering from sciatica pain. Walking and standing are tough because I have L4L5 stenosis. Some days are better but standing straight sends jolts of nerve pain down my buttocks and upper back of my thighs...this causes my glute muscles to tighten spontaneously and throws off my posture. I also have osteoarthritis in my hip, although right now, no pain there. There is no pain in my lower back ever. How can I walk more if standing erect increases my sciatic pain? I will also get a longer dog leash as it also pulls on my arm sometimes. I'm laying in bed not comfortable at all but it's more comfortable to lie on my right hip. Sadly I have no idea how it happened as I think I did it in my sleep but I also think it's because I'm overweight. I literally woke up one morning and can't sit or turn or bend over or stand or walk downstairs.

@Lenora Coleman You have to get a long poop scooper. If the stick is on the shorter side don't bend over with the stick to pick it up, but lunge at one knee and pick it up with the stick. You'll look weird, but hell it pays off because you're damaging your back each time you bend over while it's trying to heal. The healing takes forever, mine took two years to fully recover.

My physical therapist said the worst thing to do is walk as you're exasperating incorrect movement patterns over and over again with every step that probably created the problem in the first place. I find this philosophy that is just the opposite interesting. She said to walk trails without pavement because the earth absorbs shock and not the bodies joints and you also move in different directions having to navigate around roots, sticks, branches, mud, etc.

If one lives in Mountains where close by is no long flat stretch to walk on, can one simply walk on one spot, moving arms and all? Maybe using a trampoline without jumping? Whats better? Thank you so much

Have you been stopped by the police yet and told to go home? Only the homeless are allowed to walk around in public these days. This is excellent information, however, it really does work. I find assuming (imagining or visualizing) a Steven Segal posture when I walk helps me immensely.

Please help.. yesterday afternoon I started feeling discomfort in my hip joint on my right leg. I went to sleep and couldn’t because no matter how I laid down the pain kept getting worse. Now I can barely walk and have no muscle pain. It’s in the joint but it’s so random, should I go to the hospital ?

Any tips for a fracture at L4/L5 with a grade 1 spondylolisthesis for a competitive athlete?
@crystalriver7772
@crystalriver7772 4 года назад
Bill estes I had a back injury at this level and no fracture but the grade I spondy and so difficult. A supplement that has radically helped with pain and inflammation is best price at Costco a 12 mg BioAstin. It’s Hawaiian Astaxanthin. I take one usually daily and really helps ., also Costco sells a Tumeric, black pepper and Boswellia supplement and a separate jus tumeric with black pepper and I use one each of these. My workouts have sadly changed but doable though nothing much now with shutdown and health club closed. I’ve learned though be very careful if free weights. I noticed when working out again after injury that my back didn’t like free weights because not enough back support. I carefully do some weight machines without problem. I loved leg press for years but am very concerned that this machine puts possible compression on injured area. Be very careful. Also never do stuff where you lean back or extend or arch your back. I learned on internet that if you have spondylolisthesis try to do no extensions and never arch your back. So many things. Also I find helpful to not sit on seating that’s too low. I can sit all day at work on a chair with my back straight that is a good height but like park benches are really bad and such. Careful of hamstring machines and exercises. You’ll make it. I’m probably older and can tell you you must be patient and it’s a mind battle so don’t let it depress you. You’ll learn a lot and can help others. It really upset me but I’m doing okay. God bless. One more thing. If you’re at doctor or anyone examine you, do not let them bend you backwards. Refuse this part of exam. I think this made mine worse. Be firm about this with them. I don’t believe it’s necessary.

Hello. I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. Walking more than 20-30 minutes will dramatically increase my pain and I will lose mobility. I do push through but after a decade I don’t see it helping. I’m trying to figure out how to walk it 45 minutes

When you have access to a pool, use it. Very low impact, and you can walk in various depths which can change the intensity of your exercise. Tai Chi movements, (which increase both strength and balance for your bones and connective tissues in also a great low-impact exercise, which you can practice in your own home. Many vids right here on RU-vid.

Oh Ehlers Danlos. Honestly there is no winning with ehlers danlos. It's degenerative. Best you can do is manage yourself and your pain. Do the amount of walking you can manage. It doesn't get easier but you do learn different methods to cope.

Good suggestion ! I think you could really recommend the Nordic walking using skipoles and do this in hills preferably cross country hill walking using ski poles ! Thats will do wonders to deload the spine load
@elaineculbert8594
@elaineculbert8594 4 года назад
Anders Viking Svensson - Regarding hills, if you have instability in your SI joints, are the last place you need to walk; great for cardio but not so good for back pain. If you have facet joint problems, going uphill won’t be too bad but coming down puts a lot of pressure on the worn joints. Stick to flat surfaces. The ‘poles’ are good as they work the upper body so I’m sure Bob and Brad would approve of those.

Elaine Culbert I have herniated (long time) disc L4/L5 and spinal stenosis almost put me in wheelchair in October last year ! I could walk only 100 feet at a time then must sit down for 5 minutes and then another 100 feet ..and so on ! Decided to switch approach and lifestyle ! Ketogenic diet with intermittent fasting and use skipoles to walk ! At christmas I could walk hills and flat courses for 20.000 feet without sitting ! And today I have skipole-walked hills cross country slopes for 3 hours !!

I was diagnosed with herniated disk. I’ve had two injections but my numb leg and loss of muscle control has gotten so bad I can hardly walk. My steps are jerky and I have to concentrate on each and every step so I don’t hyper extend my knee. I walk like I’m going into hyperthermia. While sitting still my calf and thigh muscles just wiggle uncontrollably. What’s going on does anyone know?
