First Sunday in September
By Alan O'Dwyer
The first Sunday in September,
Always an occasion to remember,
Up at dawn to start the day,
Packing the ham sambos, the flashks of tae,
Someday we’re bound to go all the way,
Sure why not this year, the way that we play…
Headin’ down to early mass,
Outside men talk about “waiting in long grass”,
But then again, isn’t their half-back line pure class,
Praying to God; please a win for our men,
Promising you’ll never ask him for anything again…
Back home, a fry thrown up on the table,
You’re told to eat up but you’re not able,
to put another mouthful into your belly,
your stomach in knots , your legs are like jelly,
Mam says even she’ll watch it on the telly...
Up to the big smoke on the train,
The carriage so noisy it hurts your brain,
Did you just hear what your man was sayin’?
Great to get away from the ball & chain,
Staring out at the ever-changing terrain , nose pressed up against the window pane...
Suddenly thrust into a world of consternation,
It’s as if the whole nation just poured into Heuston station,
Somebody somewhere shouts “Hats, flags and headbands”,
You look up at your father, tighten your grip on his hand,
Tickets seem to be in great demand; “Would you do a swap for two in the Hogan stand?”
You struggle to understand this chaotic wonderland…
Overworked barmen covered in sweat,
Pour pint after pint - they all look bet,
More cash behind the till than the national debt,
Familiar faces on the TV set say their full-forward is a massive threat,
You’d struggle to find a hurler that is finer,
But our full-back is built like a freight liner,
We should probably head in and catch the second half of the minor…
Stooped old men with oily white hair,
Speak of hurlers you never heard of but you don’t care,
Because your county is finally there!
You catch a glimpse of Croker as you round Mountjoy Square,
Today at last, some silverware,
You look to the heavens & mutter one last prayer…
Ticket in hand, worth more than any legal tender,
You see Jones’ Road in all of its splendour,
Then you pause to remember,
That this year your county is a genuine contender,
And today is never a day for surrender,
Sure isn’t it the first Sunday in September

I'm an American but the purpose of this video can be relatable to any sport in any country and sporting culture the world. every country has something like this, the feeling that two teams playing for the biggest prize in the sport and in the land for glory and pride. it's a magical feeling and when it's your team who are in it, you get the feeling that maybe just maybe this year IS the year. fantastic stuff.

Yes but this is amateur representative sport, players are playing for the love of the game and their home county and club .The fans will know at least one player or know someone that knows that player, perhaps works with a player be father mother sibling cousin aunt or uncle. Its more than your team its sense of place and pride of place not sure you can get from pro team made up of millionaires from the other the side of the world and the team could be playing in another city next year.A player could play and win in front of 82000 and be teaching your kids or serving you drink in their pub the next day.Not saying that one is better than the other, but there is an uniqueness to irelands gaelic games that is uncommon in modern sport .60minutes did a segment on hurling which explains it better, but the video has been removed from yt unfortunately.I think it may be burried under adifferent name somewhere This video is the first sunday in september which is hurling final the third is for gaelic football both GAA governed games both 82000 sellouts and both of course amateur they are many videos here on yt .Note thats 11000 more that were in this years superbowl stadium,Yes there millions more watching on television and its not played in the same stadium.Usually there are also the highest sports attendence in europe the weekends there played more than barcelona man u real madrid and very few outside ireland in europe even know the sport let alone that they are on.Quite something for amateur sports organisation

irishlongsword boland that is what I find interesting about the gaa, in today's world of overpriced and superficial athletes you irish have maintained your traditional sports and kept them ametuer while having a huge audience for them. hurlers and gaelic footballers I imagine are down to earth people who you'd love to have a beer with and that you could strike up a conversation with in the supermarket. not to mention that hurling is on national television and I've heard gaa tickets are incredibly affordable too. the gaa are a example to the rest of the world on how a sports league should be run, not greed, not rule changes to make the younger fans intrested, not taking the fun out of the sport. just playing the sport as it was meant to be played by people who play it because they love it and have a passion for the love of the game.

GAA promotes the use and revival of the irish language and other aspects irish music and dance.Any rule change needed a two thirds majority up to this year and now 60% which shows how democratic and community based it is.However it does have some skeletons in its closet such as the ban on its members playing sports of english sports such as rugby soccer and cricket though removed in the 70s has left a legacy of tension between it and these other sports. For the future they are worries the game is becoming more and more demanding on amateur players effecting there careers and personal life.Gaelic football .Irelands population is increasing but not the GAAs players numbers they have not gone down though but you would expect there to be more clubs infact there is a decline and many clubs are merging. Its more than just sport its profound social change .Families are smaller and rural depopulation really effect the GAA being a family and rural based .Ireland in the last few decades has become home to immigrants more familar with soccer than our games though they are a few players coming through it represents a huge challenge for the GAA.Competition from rugby and soccer is huge particularly rugby which has seen huge growth in the last two decades. The games are getting too defensive particularly football which does need some rule changes ,because the game is not fun any more and crowds are declining because the competition has a lot of mismatches built into the system which needs to be addressed however the GAA being such a traditional organisation change comes very slow .The GAA is such a strong organisation in ireland that it will adapt and hold its own.but it can't be complacent.Lastly pro sports are also taking quite a few players which the GAA can do nothing about even if it wanted to because the market is too small as regards sponsorship and TV money.

I was at that Final, Tipp won the Minor and Senior double that day, pints in Gaffney’s afterwards to celebrate, then down to The Palace bar for the night as many Tipp supporters did. A wonderful day. 🟦🟨
