Jack is doing some interesting things, but every time I try to watch one of his vids I feel like I'm being ... TORTURED. Thanx Jehu for summing it up in 8 minutes. You should do that for all Jack's vids, I'm SURE ... he'd love it!
Brett www.collegehumor.com/post/7043774/the-theyre-good-dogs-brent-saga-is-complete should explain it. I one hundred percent agree with your calculations, don’t worry
TIP: If you total your Model 3 keep the wreak or battery pack and sell on ebay or Craigs to make a sweet profit! Don't let the junk yard have it for free!
Thanks for covering that. I avoid Jack's channel, except to go over there and tell him to be nice to you. He usually responds with some racist derogatory comments, and wishes you would go back to Africa or something. :) Would love to learn more about the cooling heating system that keeps cell temperature nominal. that would be the hardest part to DIY.
Just doing some quick Math, if one module And you mean a 20 kilowatt module Then $1,300 for a single $1,300 for a single module would Only cost $89 per kilowatt And The cells alone I would imagine our high-quality so it's worth it
1054lbs = 478 kgs not 278 kgs as mentioned @ 1:58, If we consider the actual weight of battery pack as 278kg(which is more accurate considering it has a capacity of 80.5Kwh) on Dividing 80500Wh by 278 kgs we get 289.57Wh/Kg and not 168Wh/Kg
This is not the first tear down of the car or the batteries. There is a company in Michigan that tore down 2 cars after evaluating them. This was for an engineering evaluation of the cars. Here is a link to the video discussing the tear down. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CpCrkO1x-Qo.html
Dear Jehu, stupid question, you can tell me about the screws they use for connecting the modules? got for our od a 75/ 90kWh to change my Peugeot 306, but noone can tell me, what Elon put inside.. You found some torque data? or, just by you cool feelings? ;) BR, find me under Thomas Rappen on FB, too... good success brother..
I much prefer the smaller form factor Model S modules for home solar DIY. A 20kWh is too much for typical home applications and that >6ft long & narrow form factor is very cumbersome and doesn't work well for scaleable/modular home solutions. Re-purposing these cells into home solar storage solutions in the future, as these early mass EV power packs start transiting into their second lives, will be much more troublesome than Model S modules. It'll be much easier to repack Model S modules into home enclosures, maybe even scale-able modular enclosures (like mini 19" racks)
I'm not as sure as you that the car recyclers havn't already understood how much those batteries and Tesla parts are worth, go check for what prices crashed Teslas are going for currently.
@3:16 the two wire connection is likely CANBUS. It's the same protocol that the Batrium BMS uses for its LongMon/CellMon/BlockMon cell monitor boards. It's an awesome and high-speed serial bus.
Hey j, can you take a pic of BMS system. I would like to know which IC chips they have been used, are they active or passive balancers, if they can balance on any voltage or just on top balancers. If you can take a picture of the PCB board detailed I appreciate man.
Jack says that as well and gives a warning to potential viewers so that they will go away and let him get on with helping others that want to use his findings.
Glenn Howden well when I was working on a project I found it very helpful unlike some tv 📺 shows that have all the glits and glamour but no real educational value but learning something’s are long winded and slow it’s the same difference between doughnut media and other RU-vid videos that cover the same subject but with more meat and potatoes like Jason engineer explained
Glenn Howden jacks Been try to electrify the “ hot rod seen” longer than Garcia if I’m remembering right Jacks channel started in 2008 and his goals are different from mr.Garcia Plus they have different backgrounds and different ways of cinematography and viewpoints. Now with out the early adopters and people willingly showing how to do a EV conversions Garcia probably wouldn’t have his van working to where he could drive it same with other people “ I’m into cars but I’m not mechanically inclined “ and yes Garcia did say that once in a video as my memory recalls
Model S battery (original 85 pack) is 540 kg and has 80 kWh usable. that's 148 Wh/kg. So the Model 3 battery is only a small improvement in terms of energy density in terms of weight. I think it terms of volume the Model 3 battery is smaller.
So Jehu, why don't you do a comparison for the Enerloop batteries vs. the Amazon Basics battery. Someone suggested the Amazon Basics were made by Enerloop. You have the tester and can check the specs. Inquiring minds would like to know.
So if there are 4416 cells that means for 500,000 cars they will need 2,208,000,000 cells. I wonder how many 2170's the giga factory turns out. Also if they are 5000mah( 5 amp hours) then it would be 22,080 Amp hours. Assuming 3.7v that should be 81,696kwh.
The total annual output will be 35GWh. (from their website) "Tesla broke ground on the Gigafactory in June 2014 outside Sparks, Nevada. The name Gigafactory comes from the word “Giga,” the unit of measurement representing “billions.” The factory’s planned annual battery production capacity is 35 gigawatt-hours (GWh), with one GWh being the equivalent of generating (or consuming) 1 billion watts for one hour. This is nearly as much as the entire world’s current battery production combined."
Bummer the individual modules are so gigantic. That's going to be a difficult/expensive form factor to ship and install in a DIY environment. Was there a mention of the voltage of each module? That's important.
This was my thought as well. Real tough to shoehorn that module into conversions, particularly older/smaller cars. But if they end up being cheap they'll be great for DIY power walls at least.
Wow... I'd never heard of EVTV. Just went to their site and read a blog post called "White Like Me….". What an absolute knob head. I wonder if he's had to many electric shocks over the years. Thanks for your video summary Jehu! There's no way I'd have watched their shitty video (or will watch any future ones).
Glad to see you take the high road in your relation to Jack. Glad I watched his video, because you haven't said all that much useful. Pro tip: Play Jack's video's at double speed.
1054pounds that are 278kg?? 478kg . The leading 4 obviously had an accident getting short cut. Can't double check the math w/o knowing the chemistry or cell voltage. If there is only a 2wire connection between BMS and string BMS subboard it either means that those pins are used for subboard supply and communication of that the subboards are supplied by the battery string which would be suboptimal. It would be great if Tesla BMS could be reused because it's not easy to get BMS for high voltage batteries.
Hi jehugarcia and all ... has anyone found a BMS for the Model 3 so they can be used as a powerwall or is there a way to use the master and child BMS arrangement from the penthouse? Love to hear from you, I have the battery pack and am hoping I can find the BMS. 417K subscribers
Hi jehugarcia and all, still working on resolving the BMS situation for a model 3 battery module. At around 3:20 you comment on the 2 pin connection between to 'slave' BMS for the module and the 'master' BMS suggesting it must be serial in nature. I'm wondering if it's nothing more than allowing the master to monitor the voltage of each module and then telling the slave BMS to reduce the voltage of the module to keep all modules synchronised. Any thoughts?
Great Video Jehu! Have you seen "Wes the Tech Guy"s PowerWall. He like to use batteries like this complete in his powerwall. Wonder if he will ever get his hands on one of these. Wes has created some interesting holder for his wall for these type of batteries. Great Video!!
The final bid for the car was $22,600. poctra.com/2017-TESLA-MODEL-3/id-AvrXdpvR8FRZClYP/SAN-MARTIN-CA $10,000 for the drive unit and $12,600 for the battery. Seems like a lot but when you break it all down you can’t build those for much less. The price will come down once there are 500,000 4.6 second 0-60 cars in the hands of millennials.
Dear Jehugarcia, thanks for the video. I have question about the long flexible cables connected to the sub BMS. I need to get one, Do you know how I can get this cable? I need your help. Thank you
2:10 168Wh/kg is the overall energy density of the pack, which is very high. The mentioned 220Wh/kg of the Model S is the cell energy density (without casing, wiring, cooling etc.). The pack energy density of the Model S is probably less than 168Wh/kg given the smaller cell format (18650).
Hi Jehu, Autoline had a video/chat about M3 battery last month... They said "these batteries are glued together" @33:51 link here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CpCrkO1x-Qo.htmlm23s Pictures are @ 29:30 29:36 29:42 34:04 Chat about battery ends @36:40
but how do you use a 25 cell battery? and it is even worse that some are 25 and the other two are 23... these will be much harder to use than the 24V model s packs.
My Corvair would like to go electric. Only need 50 miles range, if that. Engine is tired and leaks oil like the Exon Valdez. 0-60 is 19 seconds, so the electric motor torque at 100% at 0 mph would help.
You managed to boil it down to just the essentials through your excellent editing skills. Thanks Jehu. I watched Jack do this one for the first time almost all the way through, having learned my lesson long ago as to how much time he wastes pontificating ad nauseum. I almost never visit his site, but had to for this one. I only wasted about an hour doing some skipping ahead thanks to You Tube's timeline images.
I love your take on Jack's video. I wish you could fix ALL his videos. I would like to revisit all his old episodes. But 1 time was enough torture for me. Even thou I love what he is doing.
To those complaining about the length of Jacks video, you can play them faster and fast forward them with the arrow key. Go to the settings icon and chose the speed you want, 1.25, 1.5, and 2. I play most videos at 1.5. I wish Jehu and Jack could just get along, the EV community is too small for these petty grievances. Jack may be a Curmudgeon, but he's smart and can afford to make blue smoke.
This is the only noteworthy thing I’ve seen him do in the last couple of years. No need to submit myself to his bitterness, I’ll watch from a distance.
Side note Elon announced yesterday that the dual motor model 3 begins production sometime in June? But the performance model 3 won't be out 'til later in the year. Battery sizes who knows.
AWD and performance model specs and orders from late this week for July production. Base model too once they hit 5000/wk (Q1report). Currently at 500/day (internal staff email). Air shocks and Right Hand Drive next year.
