First time applying vinyl wrap 

One tip if i may, I worked for a company that made display booths for trade shows, i have applied hundreds of yards of a similar product , don't take the backing off all at one time fold the backing under the vinyl then put down one or two inches of the vinyl start smoothing it out as you pull the backing away , give it a try it really works well,

It says it right on the title, applying for the first time! what ever way they would've done it doesn't really matter here, the end result is what its all about and it came out good. Now Those cars are what we need here! Flashback to the el camino/ford ranchero body style.

Nice job guys, a tip. strart from one side of the hood, dont peel all the backing paper and use strong magnets to hold the vinil in place, once you finish one side remuve the backing paper from de other side and keep it lift as you aplied the vinil with the sqeegee. Regards from mexico city.

I'm not really concerned about having a carbon fiber look, but I like the simplicity of a vinyl. Seeing as you've had this stuff on the car for a while now, have you had any issues with the life expectancy of the vinyl wrap? Fading, peeling or anything?

They struggle at the beginning and still pulled it off! That's why it says 1 time vinyl wrap . I'd say great job!

Ideally, you want to heat the whole piece of wrap(sized about 30-40% larger than panel) and use what I call a "drop wrap" technique that envelopes the entire panel (as much as possible). From there, work from the center outward as needed. It helps to have 2-4 people helping you.

I gave them a thumbs up for actually finishing the job nicely. They did say first time ever which shows. Technique was definitely lagging but it worked in the end.

just a tip I discovered when wrapping a truck, that the little plastic smoother leaves scratch marks, I put a sock over mine and used it that way, worked like a charm and didnt leave scratch marks

Not bad for a first go however let me share my technique with you, it will save you a lot of messing around. Basically you need to use application fluid, "right on" is a good brand. If you use fluid you can just squeegee the bubbles out no problem. You want to get the vinyl down as quickly as possible to stop any dust getting under it and showing through. You shouldn't keep pulling it back up because it creates static electricity which attracts dust particles. The right on fluid will allow you to physically position the vinyl even whilst its stuck down, then once you're happy give it a bit of heat gun to secure it. Obviously don't apply fluid near the edges.

I do this type of job for a living and no you don't need fluids , but you guys did well I just don't see why the two of you did it because that's a one man job

you need a felt on the squeegee to stop scratches on the vinyl.

Spraying a mixture of dishwashing liquid and water on the panel makes the adjustment and shaping of the vinyl easier. Lesson i learned from the experts.... Give it a try

I have a wrapped my whole body in this stuff and lost 40 kg and can run a quater mile 10 seconds. But now I have a skin condition.

wax & grease remover wont damage the paint, its even used for cleaning dry paint surfaces before the next coat. Its good cause it cleans & then evaporates away

doing it in a wrong way. you should not remove the whole protector thing. remove little by little while fixing the bubbles. like how i put screen protector on my phone

I suggest to keep the vynil firm in position with some magnets and then start peeling a small part on a side of it, once it is stuck on the bonnet you go on removing the rest of the backing.

@mitch6500 you will want to sand it and make it smooth first, because ur clear will continue to peel under wrap causing imperfections and possibly bubbles

100% yes I just did it with one, you dont want to overheat the vinyl wrap or it will stretch and leave warped marks. A blowdryer is a perfect amount of heat.

It did. But the rock went through the vinyl and chipped the paint as well. I brushed touched with some paint and its hardly noticeable.

Hey, that's a neat job there.. Love the finish a vinyl gives.. I would like to know, what is the shelf life of a vinyl wrap and how does it take up wear and tear in rains and hot climate conditions. Also, if i'm getting a custom paint vinyl for the car, should I get the the surface laminated as well, for longevity? Thanks..

If you put water with soup on the stiky side of the wrap and on the hood it will be so much easier so that you don't have to remove it alot ;) I tried it and its garenteeeed

LOL as a vehicle wrappen in the UK you guys with no experiance should use 3M carbon it has an air system so you do not have to keep lifting the vinyl or try a company called Hexis, you should also be laying the viny with a felt edge applicator to make sure you do not scratch the vinyl. Nice job!

I questioned the approach @ 1st but hey it came out good so good job. I tried doing 1 myself on my 03 maxima. Was not good. I can’t remove the washer fluid dispenser parts on the hood so will have to cut around. & I pre-cut the wrap too much down to size. & don’t have a heat gun. 🤷🏽‍♂️ paint in the back. I nearly had it all done but @ the front end I got very frustrated.

soapy water so the surface is slightly wet before applying the Vinyl, makes removing the bubbles a ton easier, then use the heat gun to stretch for the perfect fit, also you guys should warn against too much stretch when using a pattern, so you don't distort the pattern :) all the surface should be damp........from my limited sign writing experience with Vinyl anyway, never tried to wrap a whole panel like that tbh :P

I'm trying this for my first time on my CL55 AMG Kompressor- wish me luck! lol PS, the cool thing about plastidip is you can do things like grills flat black & it covers all those irregular surfaces that would be impossible with a wrap.. but then you just match the vinyl wrap to the same flat black or whatever color plastidip you are using.. (it comes in lots of colors now) .. So vinyl wrap the hood, boot, doors etc.. and plastidip on the bits and pieces etc.

never film the first time you do a wrap and put it on youtube as a how to vid, ffs.

given 2 people i'd peel the whole backing pull all 4 corners tight and pull it down over, start in the middle and work you way out. that way ther is minimal stretching and distortion of the carbon print, and also have a felt pad on your hardcard that way you don't scratch the vinyl

Most vinyl is guarenteed atleast 5 years by the manufacture of course that can vary on how much it is in the sun and other things. If you are getting vinyl on your car other than materials suck as carbon fiber or matte ect yes it would be laminated and yes that will make it more durable to weather conditions

No water. noob mistake! You'll fudge up perfectly good wrap as soon as it comes to curved surfaces, and you'll be getting cracked tension lines in 6 months of sun. Thumbs down!

What a lucky Novice, if any one want to do that easy way is just peal edges from one side stick them on with heat gun then gradually peal the sheet from inwards and stick it on with heat gun, don't go for it at once go bit by bit

this is true, but you have neglected to mention the additional wheel horsepower. typically, it's said that each sticker is worth about 5whp. the formula for a wrap is 5whp per square foot, so you probably got a noticeable power bump, too.

I was thinking of applying some carbon fibre to the custom car I'm working on. Just looking at the technique used and it looks very tricky. Would be slightly easier to peel part of the backing off, and stick the vinyl down then work downwards slowly peeling away the backing as you go? Anyway thanks for posting all the same.

Doesn't matter if wrap is scratched the great thing about a wrap is it usually heals itself after application as long as there is no memory on it

Pop your hood. The windshield washer nozzles are normally just clipped into the hood and have a rubber hose attached. Just take them off first.

Use soapy water on the hood before applying vinyl. Makes it a lot easier to move around and squeegee out bubbles.

What are the best or good wax and grease removers and when the underside of the panel edges is extremely dirty, grimey or greasy, how to get that perfectly clean and good enough for the vinyl to stick good under the panels or the hood in this case?

This looks great... I have a 2018 TA 392 Challenger with hood pins... How can I work around those? I want to do my hood, top, and trunk. I have the satin black package. Will the vinyl stick to that?

A friend and I installed vinyl wrap on the hood yesterday on scion TC 2015 60x72 it wasn't easy, make sure to get at least a little bigger than it.

Tips to avoid all what we saw. It's first time i know but you've to make your life easier. Tip 1 : Never remove whole of the protective paper underneath, remove the half of it and try to apply only the one side. When you do so, remove the rest of it and apply the part of vinyl that's left. Tip 2 : Never stretch because the vinyl keeps memory and it wil shrink to it's first morph so it will make rinkles ( hope to wrote that corrent !) Tip 3 : The most importand is to cut a bigger piece of vinyl than you are going to use. If you make mistakes and the vinyl is almost in the same shape of the part you are wrpping, the only sure is to throw it and use another piece of vinyl, which means time and money. Once i was too a biginner but those tips helped me a lot and i reached a good lvl i can say. I hope my advices were helpful !

i would not use this video as a good "how to" video rather as a cool project video cause my job is a vinyl wrap installer and lot of things could do to make it easier but! great job for first time im impressed!

i really like how the carbon wrap will make the hood lighter. have you considered applying some "type-R" decals to increase the horse power?
