Wow! Very innovative! You may want to check with Bob Bennie about treating with Apiguard this time of year. I was going to do that last week and he told me it would shut down the queen and that's something that's not good at this time of year. Have you done mite checks? With all those splits you may have a very low count and not need to treat. Bob told me to treat with Oxalic Acid twice about a week apart. I think his last video(s) talk(s) about this. My last mite check counts were low but, it's time for me to check again. I'm also concerned with the lack of drawn comb in your hives. I know what its like to lose all your bees in the winter. I had to start over this spring. Currently have 42 colonies, most are double deep ten frame that have good food stores. And, I'm sure worried about some of mine that are still nuc size splits. Glad I found your channel, you have some really good ideas. Love the sugar syrup pumps system.
@JaredBeekeeping
@JaredBeekeeping Год назад
Thanks for the input Richard. I haven’t done mite checks but I think you’re right about the mites probably being low because of all the splitting, I also tried to oxalic vapor them when brood-less. Thanks to your advice and others I think I’ll just keep the apiguard for next year. It must be nice living close enough to Bob to ask him questions 😁 Thanks for the comment and good luck with your bees!

The transition from a hobby to a business is a lot of work and often having setbacks is just part of the process. I went from six to twenty-seven hives in one year and was feeding all summer to draw wax in a double deep setup. Some of the first queens were crap from poor mating but I'm replacing them as I get better at grafting.. About the sugar, I buy it all year long and store it in totes to have a good supply when its needed, I used Rural king, grocery brands and Walmart is the best price for me.

Save the wood plug when you drill the hole in your lid, use 1 screw and glue and put them on the wood blocks to cover the hole in the lid when you are not using buckets.

I worry about your 5 frame double stacks. You dont want any bare foundation in those going into winter and time is slipping away. They need to get those drawn out and full of stores in short order. I would make sure to keep the pollen patties on them which makes them want to rear brood and thus the need to draw comb. They will also need continuous sugar water being supplied. It takes an enormous amount to draw comb and store. I probably fed some of mine last year 8 gallons + from August into sept then 2-4gallons of 2:1. That allowed them to draw all the frames out build up a nice cluster. You mentioned they are only eating a gallon per week... mine can suck down a gallon in 2 days so im not sure whats going on there. I appreciate you taking the time to put the video out!
@JaredBeekeeping
@JaredBeekeeping Год назад
Thanks for the warning, I’ll continue to pour the syrup into them. My cell builder is a full size hive and will suck a gallon in 2 days, my nucs probably don’t have the numbers yet to do that but I don’t know.

Jared I think you will find if you cover your feeder bucket with another box and lid other robbing bees can’t get to them , the fact that they were leaking and bees could get to it started the robbing , lesson if you cover those buckets with box covers and lids problem solved ,also I think a lack of a nectar flow is why they were so hungry for it as well and yep they will rob the heck out of what ever they can find in times when nectar etc drys up or isn’t much around, bee keeping’s fun , and the bees are great teachers to shows we don’t know everything lol. Happy bee keeping .👍

I started back in 2017, I have seen sugar go up 78% since then. Equipment, on average, has gone up 30 to 50%. Every time I see a new startup beekeeping business, I wonder how they are going to afford it. Honey price has not kept up with inflation. Gasket on lids, very important. If you want comb, don't let the feeders go dry, every cell needs to be full plus their guts to start their wax glands.
@sunchaser325IS
@sunchaser325IS Год назад
so you paint? I see you have a drill, get a drywall mud mixer to mix your sugar, super quick and easy! I feed bout 80 colonies making sugar water exactly the way you do, have been for years, I use 2 gal buckets with lids with pour spout on the side the bees can suck those buckets dry. don't worry bout the seepage that's part of feeding with buckets. good luck in keeping bees!

I'm kinda worried about your syrup leaking problem. I'm also new to beekeeping and made 11 splits this year, but i lost 3 of them to the bees robbing each other out. I always put the little bucket that i used to scoop the syrup out of the barrel beside the hives so they can eat the rest of the syrup out of it. What i didn't think of was, that bees get into robbing mode when they find large amounts of syrup outside of theire hives. When the syrup is eaten up, the bees start to go after the other hives which can result in the collapse of some colonies (which seems the case for some of your colonies)

Best way keep those robber away is to get more empty boxes on top and inner feed. I know its more work and money, but its the best way. It will also keep the ultra Violet rays off thos plastic buckets.

@ronaldburleson1099 Год назад
Use a 1 15/16 bit to drill the hole it fits better an doesn't leak. When you wash your buckets don't take the lids off clean them from the hole they will leak around the lid if you remove the lid..

One thing to consider with all plastic foundations is when you scrape the wax off you can end up with shavings of plastic getting scraped off too. That was the determining factor for me to go wood frame with plastic foundation. Good content!
@fishmut
@fishmut 4 месяца назад
All I can say is plastic is an environmental problem ,why not stay with wax foundation and eliminate all the issues , bees don’t like it for a reason that’s why you got to cover it in wax anyway , if you use wax foundation the bees have no issue and buildup immediately no farting around , if it’s to costly maybe make your own foundation with your own wax and save money.
@noahG82

When you get your next frames/foundation you should reach out to premier and get the heavy wax foundation with them. They draw that out faster on syrup than any other ive used!

I have 13 colonies and am tax exempt for my bee business in Texas. We started off as a side gig and got a tax exempt number from the state for items used in the beekeeping business. I haven't tried using it to buy sugar at Walmart yet. I recommend check if you qualify for something like this in your state because it ask adds up over time.
@richardhyatt-beekeeping
