Recently purchasing a new Hobie AI Island adventure kayak had the chance to put it to the test travelling 30 km offshore solo to an island to camp ,explore and get the gills wet spearfishing in tropical Queensland Australia . Totally length of the trip was 70km most of which was covered by the Hobie s awesome little furling sail. Coral trout are are on the menu before a return sail as well as exploring an Estuary filled with baby sharks and sting rays.

You might get some extra rudder pins if you dont already have some. I would also check all knots before launching every time. Also check all the mirage drive screws. I find something loose everytime, and have had some wild experiences with knots coming undone, losing hardware in the water, mainsheet flapping the 25mph winds, no boat control, cant paddle because tramps are out, broken rudder pins. lol

May I ask fellow commenters a few questions? (please) 1. If this kayak capsizes, does the rider flip the kayak upright in the same way that is done with a Hobie Cat catamaran? Can the frame handle that type of sideways stress? 2. Do the pedals and fins ever breakdown? I see you have oars ready, which seems wise. But, I never see extra oars in the Hobie advertising videos. :) 3. Despite the sail and pedals/ fins, are the risks of this craft the same as those of an ocean kayak? Please forgive my asking this stuff. I'm interested in the craft. But it seems (of course) that a rider will need to learn how to sail, how to use an ocean kayak, how to navigate, how to climb back on a kayak that has capsized, how to manage ocean waves/ current, how to get rescued, etc.
@markjvairy
@markjvairy 4 года назад
1.I have never had flip over after a capsize but the trick would be to fold up the armor that would go under the water and yes use a similar technique , I’ve seen some vids on you tube of this , they are actually really stable and had it in 70 knot winds
@markjvairy
@markjvairy 4 года назад
2. The peddles are really reliable and you just need to give them a service once a year but have a lot a faith in them , would you use the sail before I had to paddle
@markjvairy
@markjvairy 4 года назад
3. Yes someone learning will have to learn but stay close to shore ,research and don’t put yourself in dangerous conditions and you should be fine , these craft are easy to learn , I do however do not recommend do the trips that I do with out a lot of experience and knowing your gear , I’ve been around water my entire life and have full respect for what the ocean can throw at us... I have an Instagram or Facebook account if you want any information just message me there or you can just comment here , good luck with decision and would love to know how you go ?

What do the peddles do?
@markjvairy

marie Aitken-swift part of this crafts unique design, peddle like a bike which pushes the hobie along at around 4 km an (walking pace) which is much more energy efficient then paddling by hand, thanks for checking out the video 👏

You did it alone by yourself, please tell me tips for safety in spearfishing. Thanks

vanpersie berli spearfishing by your self is always a much bigger risk but it’s one I’m prepared to take as I take extra precautions such dive in shallower areas then you normally would , stay out of currents , stay closer to your boat then you normally would just in case a big set of teeth swim into your area and know your limits , I never push myself without a dive buddy so hopefully I can convince someone crazy enough to join me ... hope that helps and thanks for watching

@markjvairy 4 года назад
Rashid Qahtan Barwani hopefully I answer this correctly but I have a small anchor I carry onboard which you’ll probably see in a coming video when I talk about my gear , when I’m finished for the day I put on the trolley wheels to drag the hobie up the beach to safety for the night

Watch out the Chinese won't let you on their islands soon.
@markjvairy
@markjvairy 3 года назад
That would be terrible but lucky for us that they are only leasing a small percentage of some of them and national parks own the remainder of them , this particular video I was kicked off by the lease holders even though they had the camp advertised they had closed down 3 months prior and 12 months later there is a big issue with the locals and there rights and lease holders

When I was sailing around the world I came ashore on one for the smaller Islands. Not sure the name of it. I had a run in with some Chinese lease holders. They asked me to leave thinking I was on thier lease.. so I went around the island a bit further and they saw me again they weren't as friendly this time But I wasn't as persuade to leave as easily this time either.. I told them to go get fucked... apparently I wasn't on their lease either time. I came ashore... They come to America or Australia and think they own the fuckin place.
