The name Bobby Fischer, at least to Americans, is synonymous with chess. A prodigy in the 50s, a world class player in the 60s, the 70s saw Fischer at his pinnacle. He earned the right to challenge Boris Spassky in a title run without comparison, defeating Mark Taimanov and Bent Larsen with perfect scores of 6-0, and ex-champion Petrosian 6½-2½. Now the stage was set, and the only thing standing between Fischer and Spassky was Fischer himself.
The match was mired in political overtones, during the height of the Cold War. The Soviet chess system had a monopoly on the title since 1948, and the expectations on Spassky were enormous. While Fischer studied chess virtually in seclusion, Spassky had the full resources of the USSR. Victor Baturinsky, head of Soviet Chess Sports Committee, said: "Basically, the Soviet leadership and the powers that be in sport, were interested in just one issue: how to stop Fischer from becoming World Champion.
With the match set to begin in Reykjavik, Iceland, Fischer (who had not signed any documents confirming his participation) began to make a number of demands, including a percentage of television rights, a larger prize fund, and all manner of conditions covering everything from the lighting to the chair cushions. To satisfy Bobby's demands of a larger prize fund, British chess promoter James Slater donated a dazzling $125,000 to be added to the prize fund. Fischer still needed more convincing by Bill Lombardy (Fischer's last-minute choice as second), and one famously persuasive telephone call from Henry Kissinger. Mere hours before he would be forfeited, Fischer arrived in Iceland.

Most people are still under the impression that this match was a US vs USSR thing but in reality it was one man vs the soviet chess school of thought.

Fischer faced the Soviets more or less on his own, but he still represents his country. Despite him claiming being alone and not representing the US, he was an American hero. Not a patriot, but a hero. The USSR considered him being this close to the title as an American infiltration of their chess monopoly. It was less of their guy losing the championship and more of not letting the American get it instead.
@hillsideonly
@hillsideonly 5 лет назад
@Keith Alfred Anthony Donovan I'm saying Fisher may have won match or 2 against Tal, but I don't think he could have beaten Tal in a World Championships showdown. And Fisher Claiming he prepared alone??, I don't know Fisher so I don't know if he's honest or not, but I won't know whether to believe it or not, Every Country has a Chess Association, so normally, the Soviet federation would have helped their player Spassky to prepare with coaches and practise partners not the whole entire Soviet Players or Coaches not even the Top Players as they all had their life to live, but people saying he defeated or destroyed the Soviet school of thought, School of Chess is just so much devotion and hyperbolic stand given to Fisher's achievement, Of course Fisher is an amazing talent, but for a man that won the world Championship just once, was very paranoid and discomforting, didn't defend his title, even kept making false accusations about the Russians just to draw the sympathy of people as is typical of Americans knowadays, there's just no way it sounds safe and sane to call that man the greatest player of all time,
@humanrightsadvocate
@humanrightsadvocate 5 лет назад
Fischer just wanted to prove once and for all that he's the best chess player in the world. And he did it like a boss. Of course fucktards will take pride in the accomplishments of someone who happened to be born in their country. That doesn't mean Fischer represented the U.S. The world title is a PERSONAL title. How much did the U.S. government invest in Fischer?

I guess I don't know what three fold repetition actually consists of. The position on the board has been repeated twice. It would not be until Fischer makes his next move, Rook to E1 that the position would be repeated three times. Was he claiming three fold in anticipation of this next move?

Yes, Fischer was definitely a Wonderboy, and a master of the Classico time format. He wasn't going for Low Hangin' Fruit, he had a drive To Be the Best player in History. It's no surprise many people pay him Tribute. Picking chess as his career was truly The Pick of Destiny. Too bad The Government Totally Sucks or we might have seen him play again later in life.
