Today I reacted to À Tout le Monde by Megadeth from their album Youthanasia. I expected a bit of aggression with a name like Megadeth, but was pleasantly surprised. Grief, loss and surviving without a loved one is a tough subject. Let's come together here and support one another through the journey. It's a HUGE part of the mental health conversation.

Dave explained it in an interview that the song came from his sister telling him that their mother was sick in the hospital and had passed before he got there. But later found out that she was already passed before he was told she was sick. So he thought he was too late getting to her to tell her he loved her and carried that guilt for a long time.

Growing up in the 80's, many of our churches considered this type of music "satanic". It is a shame that so many people back then hear the guitar and automatically consider it satanic. They really needed to hear the message.

The only things that manifest evil in the world are evil intent, and complicity with those who exhibit evil intent. Dave singing ‘The Conjuring‘ just makes a bunch of lonely , dysfunctional kids (and older blokes, like yours, truly) happy. Keeps us from causing real trouble, like… I dunno…lighting possums on fire, or eating the neighbour’s dog-then next week eating the neighbour’s kid. And nasal sex. That’s the newest delinquent craze. Y’know-all the usual stuff naturally evil adolescents get up to.

Your interpretation is spot on; from what I understand, back in the 90s, MTV wouldn't play the video because they deemed it a suicide song. From the interview I watched, Mustaine talked about how his late mother came to him in a dream, wanting to tell him one more time that she loves him.

When my father was terminally ill, he had a nurse who explained that, when his final days came, he would know before anyone else did. The last time I saw him was 4 days before he died, and when I left I could tell he knew. No one else did. Until that moment, I thought I'd get another chance to see him, but he knew I wouldn't. So I said goodbye. I told him he did good. I think my ability to cope with his loss was much greater because I got that moment. We got to have closure on our own terms.
@MentalAmanda

I see now that my dad knew in his final days and especially his final minutes. He started getting together family pictures. And just before he passed, he told my mom "don't forget to come kiss me goodbye" before leaving for work. She was puzzled and assured him she would never forget that. He passed before she went back in to give him that kiss. You are lucky for that beautiful moment!

This is actually a pretty interesting reaction. You should react to Megadeth's "In My Darkest Hour". Pretty good song by them. Also Megadeth is another one of those thrash bands, similar to Metallica and actually broken off from Metallica after singer and guitarist Dave Mustaine got kicked out of Metallica. After that, he formed Megadeth and this is from one of their later studio albums.
@davidhabert
@davidhabert 2 года назад
One sad note about that song is that it was written during when Metallica's original bassist Cliff Burton was killed during a tour bus accident when Metallica were doing their *Master Of Puppets tour* in Europe. Dave Mustaine was good friends with Cliff at the time even when he got kicked out of Metallica.
@Eli76055
@Eli76055 2 года назад
@@davidhabert Yea. It truly is a sad story and a rough time to see Cliff go so young. Another little sad factoid about the song is that when Dave first heard about Cliff's death, he immediately went to do some dope, proceeded to cry and compose the entire song.

The demo version of this song is even more melancholy. Actually, they rerecorded this song in 2007 and had Cristina Scabbia (an Italian metal vocalist) as a guest on the song, and it's a more upbeat version. Lisa Marie Presley was slated to be the guest vocalist but Dave thought Cristina was a better fit so they recorded the song with her and released it on United Abominations.

It's been 7 years since I lost my mom to Adenocarcinoma (same cancer that took my father in 1979, when I was 15 months old), and this song was always her favorite, next to a slew of AC/DC, Metallica, and believe it or not, Type 0 Negative. This song, with Fade to Black, Give Me Something to Believe In, have gotten me through pain of her passing. It's another reason why I lean heavily on my Cherokee heritage (my dad was nearly full blooded and like 95% according to geneology). In Tsalagi, the Cherokee language, there is no word or phrase for Goodbye. We say Donadagohvi "Until we meet again". Dave Mustaine said that this song came about by a thought experiment of what would you say if you only had 3 seconds before you die.

I think the song can be interpreted in multiple ways and that's what makes it such a beautiful piece of art I love this interpretation though because it's such a positive outlook on death and moving on Also Megadeth is a unit of measurement of death, so it's a measurement used for atomic bombs... the band was very anti-nuclear war so that's why the name!

Thank you, Amanda, for a reaction full of insight. Some of what you were saying made me reevaluate how I thought about this song. This song is definitely from before your time : if memory serves, it's from around 1990-1992. I'd like to share some of the best advice that I received in dealing with loss. First, know that the wounds will become scars. There's no point in trying to "get over" whatever the loss may be, because that's not going to deal with it. Second, the most important moment in anyone's life is right now. Because it's only in this moment that anyone has the power to change anything. So focus on the now.

This has been one of my favorite Megadeth songs since high school almost 25 years ago. As far as lack of accomplishment- I learned that setting deadlines for Life goals can be a double edged sword. Great if you achieve them, but if Life throws curve balls (and it WILL)... Not reaching those goals can be twice as detrimental to your self worth. Instead, set a goal that's attainable with steps defined. Leave the timeline open ended; as long as one is constantly working toward a goal... it'll happen. We as humans tend to forget we are on a timeline other than what we presume to be Ours. Whether it be God you believe in, a higher power, the Universe... we are on that timeline. We can only control choices we make and how we react to others.

This whole album this song is from (Youthanasia) is really really good. I Thought I Knew It All is a good philosophical tune with some catchy refrains.

This record was their Black Album, imho, song writing and production wise. With Countdown being Megadeths AJFA, my other favorite of theirs. Then things went a bit down hill for both bands after those, my opinion again. As Pantera and Meshuggah carried the torch for the heaviest of metal, short of death metal, keeping metal interesting and going. 🤘
@BlackieNuff
@BlackieNuff 2 года назад
@@silvercloud1641 That's an accurate analogy/comparison (Countdown = AJFA ; Youthanasia = M5/BA), and I'm inclined to agree. The stuff after Youthansia (save for the Hidden Treasures EP) did not resonate with me quite as well, as Cryptic Writings seemed to lack whatever it was that pulled me into every Megadeth album prior, so I never got into it. Risk and everything else that followed, was probably better, but by then I was a bit too removed to really dive into the albums and get reacquainted with all the post-Youthanasia material. So I also concur with your "downhill" assessment. The only difference is, while I pretty much stopped buying Metallica albums (save for the Garage Inc compilation) once the disappointment that was Load happened, I would still buy every new Megadeth release, just to keep the ole collection up to date and complete ((Megadeth's "evolution" was not as much of a "transgression" as Metallica's was for me - at least Mustaine & Co did not cut their hair! LOL). However, with every new album, the idea of doing a "listening session" got more daunting, and my limited time did not make it any easier. I heard that Death Magnetic was some kind of "redemption" effort, but I was not particularly impressed. I guess my interest in Metallica has waned too much to really care about anything beyond the "classic" era of the first 3 albums, the EP, and the 2 "sellout" albums ; in short, I'm only interested in anything Metallica before 1992, with Garage Inc being the only exception to that cut-off point. As you say, that's all merely "imho", lol. :-) Cheers.

@@BlackieNuff "was not as much of a "transgression" as Metallica's was for me - at least Mustaine & Co did not cut their hair! LOL" Lols. True. But there is one thing I have to hand to Metallica. No matter what all these years they still stuck together. More like a true band, a family. Not just hired musicians. 'Through The Never' was solid and spot on even after all these years, if you haven't seen it catch it on Netflix. With the exception of Cliff's death and two other long standing members on bass, it has been the original line up since their debut record. That's a very long time. Like what 40 years? Most bands don't last 40 months or even 40 days, let alone 40 years. The ultimate road dogs!
@BlackieNuff
@BlackieNuff 2 года назад
@@silvercloud1641 Another good point! I've tried to think of another band with as many original member mainstays (departures-and-returns do not count) who endured anywhere near 4 decades, and I could not think of anyone. That's not to say there isn't any, only that I could not think of them. Despite my "vast" knowledge of bands and artists out there (whether I listen to them or not), it's still pretty limited. I think maybe the closest picks I could find only last as long as a decade or two at most with most if not all original members, and anyone with the same kind of consistent longevity has had a revolving door of session/touring musicians but no real official members. In the case of the latter category, I've completely lost track of who all has ever "served" in the ranks - and I used to be pretty good at memorizing the lineups of all the bands I listened to. Haha, eventually, with every new album by whatever band, I'd look through the little booklet and realize another lineup change, and I'd be like "Aww, jeez! ANOTHER new guy??" At some point you just throw your hands in the air and say "whatever... as long as they are tight and sound good". :-P

@@BlackieNuff Megadeth had a good thing going with CDTE and Youthanasia. It should also be noted technical skill isn't the only thing that makes a great band, otherwise everyone would be playing classical or jazz based music. Megadeth could run circles around Metallica, with Dave singing on top it. But Metallica was just always bigger and more relateable. It's like smooth vs. chunky peanut butter. Both are good really, but that chunky and slower tempo Metallica had seemed a bit heavier and more pleasing over all. I also think many prefered James over Dave on vocals. Megadeth is still one of the greats, but Metallica is pretty legendary. Cheers. 🍻

I feel like as long as I keep breaking down when I hear this song, I have more to do to help myself. I feel some... desperation when I hear it. Like the acceptance of and acknowledgment of imminent death is the most terrifying thing to me. I've stood at the edge of the void before, thought that was how I would pass. Didn't want to, but felt like it would eventually happen if things kept going how they were. Acknowledging that the path I was on would kill me was what prompted the biggest changes in my life. Sometimes I get a glimpse of that feeling I had back then in this song.

Great reaction Amanda. Keep fighting the good fight. I noticed In My Darkest Hour by Megadeth mentioned. Another Megadeth song would be Sweating Bullets but you have to watch the video. When dealing with death, I would recommend Cemetery Gates by Pantera. Lyrically and musically, the song captures the sorrow and anger that you feel when dealing with death. Keep up the great work.

I’ve always loved this song, thank you for reacting to it. Thank you for what you’re doing, bringing attention to mental health from your own experiences is a beautiful & brave thing. You, & all your followers have my thanks, & respect. As someone who deals with depression, & anxiety, & is currently helping someone I love dearly find positive ways to improve where they are I appreciate what you’re doing. 2 recommendations for you, the first is a topic that I don’t think people realize the gravity of it, & attention brought to it is a good thing The song is “Wrong side of Heaven” by Five Finger Death Punch. The second is by the same band, it’s called “Coming Down” I’ll warn you the video is graphic, it’s been labeled as graphic, & disturbing content. Labeling it disturbing I think just promotes the stigma, it is very real, & the topic is tragic.

My perspective on life has changed . A friend told me years ago . " why even consider taking your life ..find meaning by making everyone else's life miserable " . It made sense and I found purpose!! .. Everyone of us are so beautiful and special ,we are here for a reason . Many times I wanted to just close my eyes and said up smothered in love .Nobody wants to die , we all just want to be loved .. That is the origin of it all.. We want to be loved .and don't feel we are at times and it makes us withdraw . Depression and hopelessness swirls around us and doubt . By The Grace of God . I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Cancer three years ago and not expected to live the summer of 2020 out . My eyes opened and Love poured into my heart like a prayer . I became grateful to be sick . I am alive to testify to every child of God .. You are Loved as it you were an only child . Loved as if every star in Heaven was made for you . To anyone struggling. I Love You. !!

I was 7 years old when my grandma passed away and I was very close with her and I’m still not over the grief that I’m going through and i still miss here to this day and she was my savior when I was having suicidal thoughts at a very young age because my dad left me when I was 5 years old and I thought he left because I thought he resented me and didn’t want me. Im still having some issues but megadeth was an outlet for me getting through the sad thoughts and made me want to create my own music.

I would like to recommend you check out former Flyleaf vocalist Lacey Sturm who went solo a few years back. Her songs Your Not Alone, Impossible, Soldier and Life Screams are really great songs and very inspirational. Another little tid bit about her is that she at one time had planned on committing suicide and well let's just say she has an amazing story about how she never went through with it. Very cool gal, check her out you won't regret it!

When I saw this video my jay dropped. It's one of my Memorial songs before the fireworks. Your take on it was spot on in my opinion. I very highly recommend my all time favorite called how will I laugh tomorrow when I can't even smile today by suicidal tendencies. It,in my opinion,gives words to the agony that I couldn't find myself.
