It is better to avoid the video music in Metal. You go either with the studio or live version.

ZAPHYROS i second this, specially because metal tends to have longer songs and the official music videos are usually edited and cut short.

the radio part gives you chills once you understand what it means, the person in the mask is a soldier who had to leave his family and love to go to war, and he was blown up and lost his arms, legs, he became a vegetable, he couldn't speak, he wanted to die but science kept him alive, living in hell.

Don’t bother doing a reaction video if you don’t have the time or you are too tired to understand the music, and understand the lyrics. Often in Metal songs the lyrics tell a story. The background of this video directly reflects on the lyrics of the song. To disregard it that simply! Wow! You should probably stick with Justin Bieber. “If I’m just being honest“

If you play the regular song it doesn't have the movie clips. I Know it's hard but the songs words are tell the story... The song and movie clips are from the 1971 movie "Johnny got his gun". All the words are the "soldier in the hospitals thoughts". He was severely injured in the war. He lost his sight, hearing, speech, arms and legs. He has no way to tell the doctors to let him die... He is finally able to communicate with Morris Code..Here is something great to React to. I promise you will like it.. Davina Michelle's cover of the Adele song "Someone like you" or another title you like on her RU-vid channel. Best voice that I have ever heard... She posts a cover every week. All her covers are as good or better than the original.. Really incredible...

that "mumbling" in the background is fairly important. knowing what the song is about is one of the most important things about this song, not just the instruments. try to watch and understand the lyrics (as well as the "voiceover")… but I can see how it would be distracting in some sense

With metal songs, you guys should do lyric videos to help you understand the songs better. This is a great song about war and a soldier getting his arms, legs, and face blown off by a landmine. Hes in his own hell. He can feel pain but cant communicate what's going on and hes being kept alive by machines. Keep listening to new songs and enjoy your journey into metal.

My first introduction to Metallica was One back in 90 or 91. My older cousin had a stack of CDs and "And Justice for All" was on top and in the stereo on this track. I was instantly hooked, but it took 2 more years to circle back to them. You really should start at the beginning with Kill em All and work your way forward track by track (possibly an album review). That is truly the only way to understand and appreciate their unique and signature sound. Still killing it after 35 years!

Yo, a “Yank” from The States over here. Ya have to understand this song is an homage to a book by Dalton Trumbull, enticed “Johnny Got His Gun.” WWI, American gets blown up a land mine. Loses sight, speech, legs... etc. he can hear what everyone’s saying, but can only communicate using Morse Code with his eyes. The over-the-top instrumentals represent the sounds of actual WAR, adrenaline rush to kill or be killed and confusion. It’s also a metaphor of his conscience and indecisive thoughts. To make a bit more sense, the guitar riffs were meant to sound like machine guns. This may account for the overload you didn’t care for. The film clips were taken from a film of the same story. I suggest giving it another listen armed with this information. P.S. I go to Ireland every year and have somewhat of a love affair with it. Speakin’ of love... love me some Magic Mak. We dig that badass ova here...

I can somewhat understand your experience with it.. When I first heard this style of music, it mostly sounded like mashed up sounds. Hard to pick up a feel for it, and hard to distinguish what's going on, musically, throughout the song. Once I started to listen to the same songs, usually from bands like Metallica and GunsNRoses, I started to develop my musical ear and was able to pick up the feel for the rhythm and eventually was able to distinguish the chord changes and which instrument was producing what. Once I picked up the guitar and started learning to play, it made me appreciate and love the instrumentation of these songs even more. Learning the guitar also gave me a better musical ear and a little more insight on how it's actually being played. Unlike the commercialized music that the majority listens to today, these Metal/rock songs are complex and change pace a lot, much like classical music. I'm starting to even like some classical songs now. Lol

There's another music video for this song that doesn't have clips from "Johnny Got His Gun" playing in the background. They only used clips from it because the vocalist had an idea about a guy in the army who loses his arms, legs, sight, speech and hearing and is just a shell and someone pointed out that a book with that plot already existed.

The song and music video bus based on "Johnny got his gun" about a young man who goes to WW1 and in an injury loses his sight, taste, hearing, smell, and both arms and legs. He spends a couple of years learning to communicate via morse code with his neck and head where all he says is "sos help kill me" over and over until a friend of his from the war tells him that the military won't kill him because it's "not the military way" and he resolves himself to live not knowing if he is awake or asleep and dreaming until he dies a natural death

Try watching them play it live. I’d check out from the Seattle 1989 concert from Live Sh*t: Binge & Purge video. This video is the version intercut with the 1971 anti war movie “Johnny got his Gun”. But the live version or the album version is best ways to listen or watch.

Hey Drew, those video clips are of 1971's movie named Johnny Got His Gun. It is about young American soldier in WWI badly wounded like he is a quadruple amputee without his eyes, nose & mouth. As he unable to talk to his doctors, soldier is able to talk to doctors tapping Morse Code with his head.

The video just contains bits of the movie that the song is referring to. I believe it was also a book too.

The "radio" you are referring are actually scenes taken from the movie Johnny Got His Gun, which is based on the book, "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. The song is also based on this book. In the book, Johnny, having learned to communicate with his nurse through a system of Morse code, manages to communicate his desire to be taken to Washington D.C. and there presented to the people in order to show them the true horror of war. But the generals and the politicians refuse Johnny's request, because they want the war to continue. The book ends with the generals leaving Johnny in a dark room alone with his nurse to die, his request forever denied.

I’m sure some has said this already the radio part was just for the video. Actual doing doesn’t have it. The radio parts are from the movie/book this song is based off on. Album version doesn’t have it. If I am understanding what you meant by radio. I enjoyed your reaction. Meaning is really dope.
