He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones is considered the greatest country music song ever, you should listen to it. And yes, George was considered the King of Country Music for many decades....a true legend!!!
George is one of my top favorite artists, and I know many people say that about that song, but I personally don't think it's even the best George Jones song. Lol
He explained the meaning of the song in the song about these old country music legends and they're dying off and when they all die who's going to fill their shoes who's going to be able to sing a song and tear your heart out with it not very many anymore especially the way George himself can tear your heart out with a song!!!!
You got me thinking... at age 90, Willie Nelson is the only one mentioned that is still kickin' tokin' and making music... God bless that Texas boy....
George is absolutely a legend in country music. He had a drinking problem, was known for hot showing up for concerts because of that, and when they took his drivers license from him, he was known for getting on his John Deer riding lawnmower and riding down the roads near Nashville to go get more beer. He and pretty much all of the names he mentioned in the song are now dead. Willy Nelson/The Redheaded Stranger is still alive and just turned 90 this past week. He is still touring and if you pass his bus, he still has marijuana smoke coming out the windows. You might want to check out George singing He Stopped Loving Her Today. This is older country music. Then in the 80's country music took a turn with Alan Jackson, Alabama, Garth Brooks, and loads of other singers began a newer sound of country. Now days, the great Avi Kaplan is combining Folk, Country and Western sounds to make his own genera of music. Country music is mostly story telling and before it was Mountain Music and Blue Grass music. All of this first appealed to southern, mountain people. We came from Ireland and Scotland mostly, and our ancestors developed their own sounds and stories. We speak slowly, with a drawl and love southern cooking which consists of peas and beans with meat and cornbread and for years, our music was more appealing if there was tragedy in the songs as we had come from and encountered tragedy after arriving here. Most lived deep in the Blue Ridge Mountains and most were illiterate, but they could play a banjo, guitar or fiddle and they sang about mountain life, loss of babies and loss of loves.
I like all the references to the country stars. It is an encapsulation of country music legends. Man in Black, Folsom Prison = Johnny Cash Okey from Miscokey= Merle Haggard Hello Darling= Conway Twitty Wabash Cannonball= Roy Acuff Go Cat Go= Carl Perkins. He also wrote Blue Suede shoes I Saw the Light = Hank Williams And of course, Elvis is mentioned by name.
The song is about legendary artists' time moving on. Then, another batch of artists fills their shoes. Then, after a while, it happens again. That's why it's good to look back at these artists to keep the music alive. Btw, best song from george jones is "still doing time."
This is a tribute to some of the country and even rock and roll artists who did country songs of the past. Except Willie Nelson they're all gone even George himself. George was thinking about how great they were and what they gave to music and wondering once they were all gone who was going to fill their shoes and create great country music. Fortunately there was talent waiting in the wings like George Strait, Alan Jackson and lots of others.
The song "Choices" is among his best. And he is one of the most underrated. But he is among the top, original, country artists. And still is one of the top.
The meaning of the song is all the greatest artists are gone or retired from music so now who will sing great country...........Silence fills the room because today's country singers can't hold a candle to the ones George named in the song. It's sad but true. George could tear your heart out with a song, check out "He stopped loving her today" or "Grand tour" Or he could have you rocking with "White lighting" or "I don't need your rocking chair" just to name a few...my favorite is "Ole Frank" George was just the best, no one can fill his shoes.
George is considered by many to have been one of the greatest vocalists of all time and is a Country Music legend. The answer to the song title is unfortunately, "No One." George was not only one of the greatest singers of all time but he had a strong impact on a generation of stars that followed him. There are R&B stars, pop stars, and soul singers who give credit to George Jones and his influence on their work, not to mention the number of country stars he influenced. His passing marked the end of an era in country music. A fifty plus year career that will never be surpassed.
The artists who are no longer here. Who’s gonna fill their shoes? Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and many more. I believe no one, absolutely no one, CAN fill their shoes. That is how great they were, and will never be forgotten.
This is a great song, sung by one of the greats in Country Music. Sorry, you listened to this song now. 1st you need to listen to Country Music & learn about the singers. Then this song will make more sense to you. Classic Country Music is about the story telling. When you listen to a song, don't talk over the song. Always pause, then back up. If not, you will mess part of the story. Listening is very important in Country Music. If you what more of this music, it's a very deep well. So many wonderful singers/songwriters for you to discover. A few names to help you out. Of course more of, George Jones, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Merle Haggard, Eddy Arnold, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Sonny James, Don Williams, Dottie West, Kitty Wells, Charlie Pride, Barbara Mandrell, Crystal Gayle, The Carter Family Sorry, l got carried away. But there are so many more names l didn't mention.
He was a legend and so where all the names he mentioned in this song. Some great music made by these men. He's asking who's going to be the next big name that brings people joy through music❤❤❤
The legends that pretty much started it all when they die or are gone who will fill their shoes because they are big shoes. Todays artists in any genre has it easy the artists in the past traveled by car town to town and made music that was never done before no auto tune etc
George was a legend. The song was paying tribute to some of the greatest country music icons who have gone on. Some he named some he referenced by song or something they were known for
He was a legend. But Conway Twitty was the King until he died. Then soon after George Straiit Gained that title by surpassing Conway in number one hits.
George Jones is a legend. No one will ever fill his shoes or all the great legends he sang about. He struggled but the Lord pulled him out. George Jones and the ones he sang about made great music. They brought it to life. Definitely check out some of his songs and duets with Tammy Wynette. Definitely react to He stopped loving her today. RIP George. Thanks for the memories that live on in your music. Praise God you finally got straightened out. He never gave up on you and neither did your family, friends and your fans.
George is a legend. You would not go wrong listening to any of the artists referenced in the song. Others have already posted their names. A good good place to start IMO would be Johnny Cash's cover of the NIN song " Hurt"
Yes, George Jones is a legend in country music and everyone he sang about in the song are legends. Each one had their own style, but all legends. And sadly, all gone now. “Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes “?
George Jones is THE legend of country music. He's the Lebron James, Ric Flair, Babe Ruth, Wayne Gretzky, Tiger Woods. George has never had a bad song in his entire career.
The Possum. He was the one who most filled the shoes of those who’d come before. He laid it on the line. And took that place. There’s a great documentary series about him now
Yes, up until Jeorge Jones died he was considered to be a living legend. In this song you have a man that had shaped country music to what I believe its golden years. He has contributed a lot to country music. And being a legend himself paying tribute to all of the other legends that he names off in this song. Asking the question, Who's Going to Fill There Shoes??? At the top of his game giving credit to all the greats in country music.
Premise is George is paying homage to all the greats of Country, Rock, and Tv that passed away leaving a void in our hearts and the industry. That hole is rarely filled.
great review for not knowing who he is. But you did well. George was at the top 60-90 It is debated amongst the pros if he had the best country voice of all time. He was asking who are going to fill the shoes of the star of country since all the greats from his time have mostly passed away. Whose going to carry on their tradition. by the way I subbed to you because of your honest reaction. best of times to you and your family
But I'm glad you recognize George's voice.. George ..... the Possum.. nickname... and he's talking about all the greats from way back when... and it's their nicknames he's saying in the song.. not the real names.. like the man in black.. Johnny Cash.. Elvis.. Bluue suede shoes.. red headed stranger .. Willie... Hello Darlin.. Conway Twitty ...just goes on and on... Thank you Pol-Pop for teaching me all this old stuff
According to Garth Brooks, there is a holy trinity of country music. First and foremost, is Hank Williams Sr. His songs resonate with a lot of people, and still influence a lot of artists to this day. He is the grandfather of country music. Secondly, you got Merle Haggard. Merle is the kind of artist that artists would love to be. He lived a rough life, and hearing Johnny Cash while in prison turned his life around and inspired him to be a musician. Little did he know, he would inspire and influence so many that would follow after him. The last of holy trinity of country music is George Jones himself. He can bring you to tears with his songs, or get you laughing, and he sang perhaps the penultimate country song of all time with "He Stopped Loving Her Today". There are too many notable artists from their time to add, and there have been a number of artists that have carried their torch to the following generation, like "King" George Strait for instance. The common thread to all great country music is one simple phrase "Three Chords and the Truth". If that phrase applies to an artist's songs, chances are they are a torch bearer for true and great country music.
If you're familiar with the history and lore of mid-20th Century Country Music, this song can bring tears to your eyes. (and it's really not fair to ask someone who isn't to react-they have no basis on which to form a good reaction) The singer is lamenting all the great singers that came before, memorialized in the makeshift museum of the General Store/Gas Station. Back when George was married to Tammy Wynette, they were referred to as "The President and First Lady of Country Music". Both of them were huge stars. Mentioned in the lyrics: The Outlaw that walks through Jessi's Dreams - Waylon Jennings Red Headed Stranger - Willie Nelson Man in Black/Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny Cash Okie From Muskogee - Merle Haggard Hello Darlin' - Conway Twitty The Opry/Wabash Cannonball - Roy Acuff Blue Suede Shoes - Carl Perkins (wrote the song) Elvis Presley Jerry Lee Lewis Charlie - a Jerry Lee Lewis song "Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues" Go Cat Go - (song) Carl Perkins repeat Luke the Drifter - Hank Williams Sr Marty - Mary Robbins Hank - Could be another Hank Williams reference, possibly Hank Snow or Hank Thompson (eta-probably a Williams repeat, based on visuals) Lefty - Lefty Frizzel Visible in the posters/memorabilia/film clips: (not listed above) Patsy Cline Roy Orbison Ernest Tubb Webb Pierce "Hey George, what happened back there? I don't think you'd believe me, buddy." George was probably good friends with most if not all of the people listed above, and seeing all the mementos and signatures of his old friends long gone was like having a visitation with them all at once, at least as far as the video goes. (Both Waylon and Willie were still around, but they belong in this group)
This is country musics golden age. It starting going down the pooper in the 90s. The song is saying our predecessors were so great and now that they're gone which one of us is going to man up and inspire the next generation.
Hank Williams Sr.(Luke the drifter) is the father of country music and Little Richard is the father of rock and roll music(though Elvis,Jerry Lee,Johnny cash and Carl Perkins are occasionally wrongly credited for it).George Jones is probably in top 3 country legends ever.
im sure it was said already but whos gonna fill there shoes is saying when they are all gone whos going to make music like they did they were all legends , each one so unique and they moved you so much to your core being
Who's going to the fill shoes of those legends when they are gone? Many have been gone already and no one has been able to even start to fill their shoes, and never will.
I saw him perform when I was 12 years old (1962) on a makeshift stage that was being promoted by a rich land developer. It was next to the Trinity River and he sang White Lightning. I don't remember any of the other songs he sang. He had a drinking problem back then and I was glade he finally overcame that. He cowrote songs with Roger Miller who was a great song writer, singer and entertainer. Texas seems to have had a lot of country song writers and singers. Wonder why?
The Possum. I think that you would like his The One I Loved Back Then or White Lightning. I personally like The Grand Tour and of course He Stopped Loving Her Today. Good video.
If a rapper wrote who's gonna fill their shoes....it would be about Tupac and Biggie etc. He named the greats that have moved on from this world and left us in tears. Now George is gone. No one can fill his shoes.
Yes, he's a legend in country music. Started in the 50s and has had numerous hit songs both as a solo artist and with his one-time wife Tammy Wynette. He's passed away now and that's basically what the song's about. When these artists are gone who's going to take their place and will they be as good?
Good Video Man. The song is a tribute from One of the greats to the rest of the greats. Modern Country singers shoutout George Jones in their songs. My recommendation is go back to the OG, Hank Williams. That’s the Godfather of Country. A good song to check out as well is Texas Cookin by Guy Clark Studio version, not the live one, it’s not as fun.
Glad to see you checking out George Jones . You might say he`s the king of tear jerkers. I like a wide variety of music. Like Duke Ellington said, there`s only 2 kinds of music. Good music & bad music. And I like both kinds!
Thank you for this! I'm a 30 something and this makes me feel like a kid in the backseat again. My mom LOVED George J. and would play it for us on car rides.
Every one of the phrases in this song related to a particular singer in the past. These were phrases that were part of their musical history, or their person.
Waylon Jennings,my favorite of all time, once wrote a song with the line If we could all sound like we wanted to,we’ld all sound like George Jones.Waylon is the outlaw who walks through Jessi’s dreams mentioned early in the song
It was like seeing all the greats threw the years whos going to fill their shoes is who is going to be the next big stars. , Different people in music have that good roll , and are in the limelight for a short stay then gone , i seen his concert of 50 hits in 50 years tour , He started out in the 50s. And hit his stride in the 80s. , everything he touched in the 80 s to mid 90 s was big , He has possibly the greatest vocials in any music , He was know as the Rosye Royce of country music , He died a while back. Now their are only two icons left in country music that being Hank jr and Gene Watson, So in About 5 years country will go to the wayside , , it was hard for Geore Strit to retire because we dont have the quility entertainers around anymore , And Alan Jackson will be around forever because also no one will fill his shoes , , We need a strong voiced woman vocalist to just pop up in countrynmusic , and a few more tradional male singers to find nashvile or austin texas ,
This is a great song, but it takes a lot of its meaning away if you dont know what its referencing. He is singing about all the greats of country music!❤
