Congratulations! Like others have already said, you are among the 2% of reactors that actually get this story/song correct. When this song came out in 1980 EVERYONE knew exactly what the story was. I don’t know why people can’t figure it out today. Maybe we looked at love and marriage differently back then. Nowadays people get married almost expecting it to fail. That’s a sad way to go into a “lifetime” commitment.

I agree. I understood exactly what the song meant the first time I heard it. I will concede that I knew what it means to place a wreath upon his door so that would be an advantage over people unaware of that custom. It still shouldn't be that hard to figure out.

I know what you mean. A few years ago I ran into an old friend. He told me he was married, had a couple of kids. Through the conversation, he said his next wife had to have a certain quality. I said oh I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were unhappy and going through a divorce. He laughed and said he was perfectly happy and not going through a divorce. He said I couldn't expect him to stay with the same woman for more than a few years. Confused, we said our goodbyes, but it always bothered me what he said. Recently ran into him again, and true to his word, he had a new wife and two more kids. He's still fairly young, I don't doubt he will have more new wives before he is done.

It’s not that they look at love differently it’s that they apparently can’t comprehend simple English. Country songs are pretty straightforward. The use of symbolism occurs but sparsely. This is a gripping and obvious song which is exactly why it’s so damn sad. How so many reactors miss this is stunning. This is a tragic love song made even sadder by the brilliance of George Jones voice and delivery. A legend and the greatest country song of all time. Bravo to this reactor.

The legendary country singer Waylon Jennings said, "If we could all sing like we wanted, we would all sing like George Jones.". Its also been said that when George sings the audience cries, the band cries and the roof leaks. So glad you gave the song the attention and respect it deserves, thank you. Great reaction.

At the beginning of the song, she left him. And she told him he would forget her in time. He pined for her his entire life. He never got over her and never moved on. He never received the love he needed because he was so hung up on the one that got away. So it’s even more sad than you think.

Legend has it, that after recording the spoken word part, he said disgustedly :" Nobody's going to buy this morbid son of a bitch!" It became his most popular song. Alan Jackson sang it at his funeral to him and his widow. Only time I've ever seen AJ crack while performing. He and George were long time friends. Worth watching- he does a wonderful job of it! Also Vince Gill and Patty Loveless singing Go Rest High on that Mountain.

Today Country is not Country. Don’t get me wrong. Because there is great music but it is not even close to the real Country music. Just the way with all of today music. @@williamjackson3617 Hey, William! I totally agree, this stuff today is not Country. Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Don Williams, etc., those guys were Country. George Jones was Country. Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, both Country. I'm from that era, grew up listening to them on AM radio for the most part. My main issue with George Jones is that he was an alcoholic wife beater. Reminded me too much of my stepfather. Kinda looked like him a bit, too.

This song never struck me as sad. It’s a testament to a man’s fidelity to himself. There’s something to be said about being a man of your word, “he said I’ll love you till I die”. It’s along the lines of being defined as what/who you love, not what/who loves you.

Famously George Jones had a very public relationship with another country singer, Tammy Wynette. Their relationship ended in divorce. George also struggled with alcohol for many years. His nickname was "No Show" Jones due to missing concerts because of his drunken state. However, he brilliantly communicated feelings of hurt and heartache through his songs. Many fans related to his struggles. Happily, he sobered up in his later years. His last wife was a woman of great faith and had a good influence on him. This led to a successful series of tours before he died.

That's the way it's supposed to be. My parents were married 65 years, until my father passed away last year. They still held hands, and she would say she wasn't old enough to cross the street by herself. In 65 years, they never spent a night apart unless it was something for church. She was holding his hand when he passed. Neither one ever had a drink of alcohol. Two wonderful people.

Back in the 80's George & his wife Nancy moved to my small Texas town. They built a big club & dancehall (Possum Holler) & a big outdoor music park. My parent's were their neighbors & worked for them as well as myself. That was the best most exciting job i ever had, everyone that worked for them felt the same. When George performed he'd sing this song next to last so Nancy would be backstage when he finished the show.

My late wife loved me sooo much, I would catch her eyes melting with it at times. After she passed, my biggest wonderment was "Where did all that love go?" At the time it seemed like it went off a cliff. Reflecting back, it didnt go anywhere, just beyond. I occasionally see a shadow dart across my peripheral, followed by a tingly ethereal hug.

Too many people only do one type of music so it was nice (don't let the haters turn you away from this music) I was born in Nebraska but in the biggest city (which is not saying much) but I was able to get to enjoy both country music and rock and roll. It was July 4th weekend and Martina was giving a concert inside the rodeo arena, indoor huge metal building, after the rodeo. I took our Daughter who was about 10 to sit on the on the arena fence so we could see. The arena was full of the rodeo horses. At the end of this song some drunk idiots decided it would be funny to set off cherry bombs inside this building. 😂 people were running and screaming, martina screamed, i fell off this tall fence, was trying to get my daughter down because the horses were running by her bucking and kicking. OMG! it was crazy! My daughter laughs now and says i jumped and left her!😂

I think there's something you missed. I'm not a George Jones expert, for a while he was married to female country singer and legend Tammy Wynette. I believe before this song was written, so I don't know of that has anything to do with anything, but George Jones, and then later George Strait, are often referred to as the King of Country Love Songs. Anyway, I don't know that I'm right, but I think that you're right that the song is about him dying, but I don't think it's necessarily as romantic as, "Aahhhh! He really loved her til the day he died! Isn't that sweet!" The part of the song that you're missing is that they once were in love, she left, and he spent the rest of his life not being able to get over it and move on with his life, just hoping that she'd still come back some day, which she only did at his funeral to pay her respect, but it's a song about a guy who basically waisted most of his life hung up on a woman that didn't want him anymore. Which to me, is even more bittersweet and depressing. The singer is basically describing that this poor miserable son of a bitch that he knew, died, and well, that's it. What a legacy.
