Exactly. Some of their songs could be considered disco but that would be just a very small part of their catalog. Definitely wouldn’t consider ABBA a disco group.
ABBA, one of the greatest bands ever! It was made up of 2 Swedish couples. Bjorn, the guitarist married Ag Ethan the blonde girl and Benny the pianist married Ani-Frid aka Frida or Annie the Auburn haired girl. that's where ABBA comes from, the initials of their first names. They were the first to make videos of their songs. They smartley wanted to preserve their songs and looks. This was way before mtv videos. They started it all. They have sold over 400 million records, only the Beatles have sold more! Huge cataloge. Try Fernando, Chiquitita, Take A Chance On Me, and another great disco song Voules vous. By the way after 40 years, last year they put out a new album called voyager. Incredible. Their voices haven't changed. They have a theatre in London where they put on concerts using avatars aka ABBAtars . So real. Not holigrams. Sold out every night
Perfectly said, nor would anyone with much knowledge of the Bee Gees tag them as a strictly disco group. They're two of the most talented, likable groups in history, who happened to produce great songs that were eminently danceable.🤔
@@rebeccalipps23 "Dancing Queen" is a song in the pop and dance genre, although many music critics and publicists also classify it as a disco song, despite not containing several distinctive elements of this genre. The melody is composed in 4/4 time, in the key of A major and a tempo of 100 beats per minute.
Nobody ever did It like ABBA. There's hardly anywhere in the world you can go where you won't hear one of their songs playing somewhere. True Music Legends.
Indeed. I had a good time back then, even if I didn't got the meaning of the: just 17 teasing part yet.😁 Was innocent 7 years young and up to today never a teaser on purpose. 😉
@@thisisitreactions One of the top-selling acts of al time and, AMAZINGLY, they have come back after a 40-year(FORTY years !!) absence. Please watch "Don't Shut Me Down" and see the lyrics video as the lyrics explain their comeback. "17" in England is ABOVE the age of Consent, unlike The USA. Anni-Fris with dark hair was born in Norway. They now have a 5 year "virtual" residency in a Theatre they built in London:)
ABBA has fans all over the world! They were TREMENDOUSLY popular. To date they have sold around 400 million albums and have remained in the British v charts CONTINUOUSLY for around 40 years.
@@thisisitreactions The age of consent in Sweden TODAY is just 15. So when they wrote this song in the '70s, it was probably the same age, or maybe even 14. So it's okay to get turned on by the lyrics, fellas.
Abba were the first group that made videos to promote every single they released on radio, they only made 2 world tours , just once in the US. Their promotion system worked so fine that MTV was born . By the way they were the first group to appear on a CD. Their video director has won 3 Oscars for some of his movies , it was the 70’s and the intention was to expose their image not to create a great video with an average/bad song , which is the case right now
I remember going to an ABBA concert in 1977. That's before they made it big on the world stage. Australia launched them, After they won Eurovision with Waterloo in 1974.
Indeed an amazing Popgroup, real grassroots top. I grew up with their songs, they made me happy, singing and dancing along. Was a bit sad that they split up (divorced) and no longer produced songs. Although Benny and Björn created musicals... together after ABBA was finished.
... they had LOTS of worldwide hits, including the USA, but this was their only single to hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 here in the USA!!! I think you guys would enjoy another one of their hit singles from the same time ... "Knowing Me, Knowing You" ... probably the most upbeat heartbreaking breakup song ever.
Sorry but as usual I can't believe anyone could have been on this earth for more than 3 or 4 years without hearing ABBA! They were big! The only song that will get people out of yheir seats and heading for the dencefloor in less than a minute.
ABBA is one of the most legendary groups in music history. They recently reunited for a tour and an album to please all their fans the world over that had been throughout the years begging them to get back together. :}
The song is not problematic. Teenagers have parties, and clubs. They went out to dance, and of course they flirted. They’re telling a story that doesn’t involve an adult and child, but teenagers. You could take it for the surface lyrics or apply double entendre, as many songs had two meanings. And even with the double entendre, no adults are involved. And though the song is talking about dancing, best believe this was played at the roller rinks. I have to partially correct myself. Somehow all these years I missed the lyrics, “looking for a lover”. That being said, it is still mild compared to what kids listen to these days.
'Gimme,Gimme.Gimme'','Take a chance on me' with a naively sexy video will be fine for you.Abba wasn't disco based.THeir main music ground was pop music with North European folk roots. But expiremented with glam rock, disco, reggae, classical music, dark synth pop .2nd best selling band in history only with Beatles above. Not that huge in USA but rest of the world MASSIVE.Abba was the joy of life for us here in Europe and they are still big deal.Estimated record sales of over 400 millions.
@@herrbonk3635 you are right,...neverthless for some people (USA wise) Abba were a kinda one hit wonder disco band.As Frida joked last May.. 'How saad",lol.
Yes, I never realised it, but there are some young girls dancing in the audience. So quite an innocent 🧡 or even peaceful feminist song. 🙏 No toxic 3d wave feminism back then. 😘
@@jaybee.b.L0VE.rEVOLUTION There was plenty of toxic feminism back then. Even in the late 60s, there was a strain of feminism calling for the eradication of men.
You will not find any group or singer with cleaner vocals than ABBA. They released a new album two years ago after not performing together in 41 years. They still sound fantastic.
Abba was basically pure pop music. In their whole discography of more than 100 songs only nearly 10 of them were disco. One was this from 1976,2 more followed in 1978,5 more in 1979 and 1 was from 1980.Despite the merciless and unfair critical abuse from the rock music media, Abba were adored from the public who put them on the map and built their kingdom.I'm pretty honoured f that you 3 black people coming from different music culture gave this legendary classic an approval reacting so positively to it.Thank U!Suggestions?Next disco-ish bangers,TAKE A CHANCE ON ME/IF IT WASN"T FOR THE NIGHTS/GIMME!GIMME!GIMME!/VOULEZ_VOUS
Hard do draw a line between disco and non-disco pop music though. "Disco" was essentially just funky danceable music played on a disc player, hence the term "disc-o". Abba had several pop/rock-ish (even new wave or fusion-ish) tunes with a disco touch, or vice versa. Also a couple of more purely funk style songs, like My Mama Said.
@@herrbonk3635 personally i love the funky-ness and the guitar interlude on 'MMS' and especially the glorious funk instrumentation in 'Man in the middle'Looove it.
@@christianoazzuro6711 I agree on the first one :) Most of their studio players had good jazz chops, although not showed off very often. (The MITM track feels a bit stiff or constrained to me. Recorded at a time when they often were in a hurry, having no studio of their own yet. MMS is much more relaxed, for some reason.)
@@herrbonk3635 I also enjoyed the jazzy air that Agnetha delivered in the alternative version of Thank you for the music(Doris Day version) no matter if she sounds more like Marylin Monroe to my ears. Also i get some soul n funky vibes in 'Lovers' from the VV album.
@@alexioverdo5225 Yeah, Agnetha and Benny :) I agree. And I also hear fusion-jazz in tunes like The Visitors. To me, that one sounds almost Weather Report-ish (although few Abba fans probably listen to that kind of music a lot).
ABBA won the Eurovision Song contest in 1974 (Europe ofcourse!). They were sensational at the time. Since then they have continued to sing, & still sensational. The song was called 'Waterloo'. I was a teenager then & LOVED ABBA. Ofcourse it was a very long time ago. They are still superb!
You have to remember this is back in the 70's, they didn't even start music videos on MTV until the 80's, and the first videos that came out were pretty different because no one knew what to do, they were too use to just being heard on the radio and in concert, the whole video concept was foreign!
As I said before and in another comment neither ABBA is a disco music group neither Dancing Queen is a disco song ABBA, and Dancing Queen, are Europop music but ABBA has a few disco-style songs, inspired by the hit soundtrack of "Saturday Night Fever" by the Bee Gees, among the best are: Summer Night City Voulez Vous Gimme gimme gimme Lay all your love on me they all have official videos, and are also performed by their avatars (ABBAtars) in the disco section of their new show "Voyage Concert" at ABBA Arena in London UK
Just to get a flavor of ABBA's amazing variety of styles. Do The Visitors, My Mama Said, Knowing me Knowing you, SOS, The Name of the Game, Lay All Your Love on Me, One Man One Woman, I can go on and on... this list is Endless. Oh and Gimme Gimme Gimme....
It was even number 1 there at the time. Pity that young fellow doesn't remember anything before 91. You missed most of everything then. ABBA were big here in Australia then.
Great that you do ABBA! They are the most successful band after the Beatles. Also, they did a lot of different songs and styles not onyl swedish disco , you may try: Chiquitita ( horrible video but one of the greatest happy/sad songs ever, Frieda and Agneta sind like angels!), Gimm e , gimme, gimme ( another disco tune), Knowing me, knowing you ( split up song), Waterloo, etc. etc...
There are a million songs from ABBA that are Great Feel Good 70's Songs, Check out - Does your Mother Know - Gimme Gimme Gimme - Take a Chance on me - SOS - Fernando - The Winner takes it all - Waterloo - Angel Eyes....etc.....
Hello guys, so nice to see you for first time, with a reaction to the biggest ABBA worldwide hit (a correction to You: ABBA wasn't a disco group, and Dancing Queen wasn't a disco music) These is ABBA, the iconic Swedish pop quartet, the best, most versatile and most important of the 70s, in the post BEATLES decade (the revolutionary group of the 60s) ABBA, as in its time BEATLES, was a musical and cultural phenomenon, and its legacy lives on ABBA is the biggest musical act in the history of both continental Europe and the non-English speaking world They are the first non-English speaking group to have considerable success in major English-speaking countries And is the first group to break with the hegemony of NorthAmerican, English and Australian artists in the music market dominated by British culture. ABBA is an acronim with the initials of their first names; initialy was two swedish couples too: A- Agnetha (blonde lead vocal) & B- Björn (guitarist and songwriter) B- Benny (pianist and songwriter) & A- Anni Frid (brunette lead vocal) (both couples separated before the breakup of the group in 1982) "Dancing Queen" is their biggest worldwide hit and ABBA flagship song it was #1 in a lot of countries al over the world in 1976, included the only #1 to ABBA at US Billboard in 1977 ABBA recording between 1972/1982, have a wonderful series of more than 20 worldwide hits, included nine #1 in UK: Waterloo Mamma Mia Fernando Dancing Queen Knowing me knowing you The name of the game Take a chance on me The winner takes it all Super trouper And after more than 35 years ABBA return to studio in 2017 and recording a full new album "Voyage" between 2017/2021 released in November 2021 and is a worldwide succes (with four nominations to Grammys awards 2023, two for the album and two for one of their comeback songs, among one before to 2022 edition) And in last May 2022 all four ABBA members asist to the premiere of the new Voyage concerts (with avatars of Theirself) in the new ABBA Arena at London UK (another greatest success,, with tickets on sale to November 2023) The ages of all ABBA members now is 72 Agnetha Fältskog ; 76 Benny Andersson 77 Björn Ulvaeus & Anni Frid (Frida) I hope to see more reactions to ABBA GOD bless you my best regards from Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷 South America
Thank you clarifying that ABBA was not a disco group. I'm learning more and more about this wonderful group. If you have other song suggestions, please let us know. :-)
ABBA was NOT a disco group, but disco was emerging and this WAS a definite nod to disco music. Later on, other songs had that specifically disco beat - namely, Voulez-Vous, and Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. They were not incorrect in thinking that Dancing Queen is a disco song. Where would the girl be dancing, when the lights are low, looking out for a place to go? She is the Queen of the dance floor, not a ballroom dance floor, but a discotheque dance floor. Their return with Voyage was after 40 years exactly.
ABBA has an extensive catalogue of hits and they still own their catalogue which not even the great Tina Turner does nowadays. Please react to their comeback songs "Don't shut me down" and "I still have faith in you" from 2021, celebrating 50 years as a band and 40 years since they stopped performing. They built their own arena in London where their high tech show is sold out since the opening in May 2022, the only band in the world to have their own arena. Thank you for a great video reaction'❤❤❤❤❤❤
The disco era began with Jive Talkin by the Bee Gees and the moaning of Donna Summer in 1975. ABBA's disco influenced tracks tended to be Summer Night City (with a rock twist), most notably Voulez Vous (featuring Earth, Wind & Fire horns) and the still popular Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight). The pop band ABBA have always been open to other styles of music: listen to the R'n'B influenced The Name Of The Game, the rocking song package Does Your Mother Know+Hole In Your Soul/Live Wembley 1979 (you'll blush with embarrassment) or the power ballad The Winner Tales It All. Have fun with all kind of good music👍✌
As a teenager in 1977, I was a die-hard punk rock kid. Totally into Sex Pistols, Iggy & The Stooges, The Clash, The Ramones, The Damned, New York Dolls, Buzzcocks and so forth. Rock 'n roll noise ruled my life! I was also a closet fan of Abba. A secret I never revealed to my "we-have-the-greatest-taste-in-music" buddies, hahaha! Blimey! ABBA sure knew how to write anthemic stick-like-glue pop songs like no other. Pop classics that will live forever!
One of ABBA's iconic songs performed with such energy! If I may offer one small correction, Agnetha's name is pronounced as "Anyetta" with the accent on the E.
Welcome to the world of ABBA! They were huge and I mean HUGE in the 70s and 80s. They were 2 Swedish married couples. Agnetha the blonde was my married to Bjorn the guitarist and Ani-Frid aka Frida or Annie the Auburn haired girl married Benny the pianist. They have sold over 400 million records. Only the Beatles have sold more. They were way ahead of their time making videos to their music. This was way before MTV. they have made a new album last year after 40 years! They also built a one of a kind theatre where they have started putting on concerts with avatars aka abbatars by their fans. Not holigrams. So real! They spent months wearing cameras to capture every movement so it's actually their movements. Sold out months ahead of time. Try their songs Voules vous, Fernando, Chiquitita, Take a chance on me, knowing me and knowing you. So many to choose from. Nobody and I mean nobody harmonizes like Frida and Agnetha
It's never been used in commercials, it was on the radio ALL the time, and a lot of wedding receptions play this and EVERYONE gets on the dance floor and EVERY ONE knows the words! She is only DANCING she is not looking for sex guys, geez! LOL! 1976 "that is old" Well that hurt! My second child was born in 1976 and I was 29 years old! After THE BEATLES, ABBA is my second favorite group ever. You can't go wrong with ANY of their songs. The stage musical and movie "MAMA MIA" are both FANTASTIC ( I like the movie BETTER, though) and all the songs in both ARE ABBA songs. It's a FUN movie and you should check it out. A sequel was made called "MAMA MIA: HERE WE GO AGAIN."
FUN review! Great to see you guys appreciate the signature pop sound of ABBA's most recognizable global hit . To continue yiur ABBA journey, I suggest another big dance hit by ABBA - " Gimme,Gimme, Gimme" "The Winner Takes It All" is an awesome power ballad and "SOS" is a more rocky sounding pop hit. There are literally dozens of other ABBA hits to review...
Oh that might like them too since it's more close to the American soulful genre and was also sampled by hip-hopers THE FUGEES for 'Rumble in the jungle' back in '96.
I love when going to a summer vacation to like spain and you're going to a pub with lots of brittish people in their 50's and ABBA is being played. They go nuts 🤣. Makes me proud 😁
Corey - You f***** have GREY hair!! HOW... HOW don't you know ABBA's Dancing Queen?!?!? This is a Pop era defining song! So, HOW?!?!? Even US Americans can't be that ignorant... 🙄
Classic!! Great Song & Loved The Music Video (this is before a music video was a thing) .. more Disco Classics: 1. "You're The First, The Last, My Everything" by Barry White .. 2. "Love Theme" (Best Instrumental of 1970's) by Barry White & His Orchestra .. 3. "Young Hearts Run Free" by Candi Staton .. 4. "How Deep Is Your Love" by Bee Gees .. 5. "I Love The Nightlife" by Alicia Bridges .. 6. "Rock The Boat" by The Hues Corporation ... 7. "Last Dance" by Donna Summer ... 8. "If I Can't Have You" by Yvonne Eliman 9. "Disco Lady" by Johnnie Taylor .. 10. "Keep It Coming Love by KC & the Sunshine Band ... Big Shout Out To: "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor {The Big Woman Anthem of the 1970's) ..
"Dancing Queen" refers to the queen of Sweden. The Swedish king, not being married, met her in a disco. As in the song she was at the age of seventeen. ABBA performed this song at the king and queen's wedding.
There sure are a lot of urban myths about ABBA and that's another one. 'Dancing Queen' was written nearly a year before it was actually released in 1976. It was first publicly performed at a gala the night before the Swedish royal wedding. Queen Silvia was 32 years old at the time. an she had first met the future King four years before. Although it was very apt for the occasion, the song title was pure coincidence.
Back in 2000, Abba was offered 1 Billion Dollars to do a reunion tour. Every member of the group would make a cool 250 Million. The group turned it down. Abba is more than just pop.
ABBA are huge in the uk and Europe Australia and Asia like Elvis,Madonna, Michael Jackson the Beatles huge They had 18 consecutive top 10:singles in the uk including 9 number 1 singles
I love ABBA now (didn't as a kid when they were current) but think of them as Pop rather than Disco. As for disco music - how about The Village People, Donna Summer, The Commodores and Kc and The Sunshine Band.
@@GodlessFiend "Hater"? "No taste"? Just because my favorite Abba tunes are not exactly the same as yours... Only a sn*wfl*ke would say such a thing. (And even trying to give orders as a master suppression technique on top of that...)
