Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Marvin Gaye, Aaron Neville are some favourite Soul singers from 60’s & 70’s. Al Green has had my heart since I first heard his voice on the radio in the mid sixties, as a teen I never heard soul music until Sam Cooke, *Marvin Gaye💓, Al Green, later I discovered the incredible voice of Aaron Neville from New Orleans. To love soul music you need to become a Motown follower, it is something that just grabs you & never let’s go, it is with you for the rest of your life. The Temptations, Smoky Robison & The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Supremes, Mary Wells, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Lou Rawls, The Jackson Five ( letter Michael Jackson on his own & became a legend) - are people to follow.

This song was written by the Bee Gees and was their first #1 hit in the US in August 1971. They always said Al Green's version was one of their favorite covers of one of their songs.

More importantly, after the Jolly Green Giant's version appeared as an album cut on his " Let's Stay Together" , from hence forth the Brothers Gibb would use Al & Genius Producer Willie Mitchell's arrangement in their live set for decades. Barry Gibb, the co-writer of this gem, would change his lead vocal approach in concerts. That fact says it all in terms of what Mr. Green did with his definitive version.

This song is not a love song, it refers to the break up of the singing group The Bee Gees. "How Can You Mend.." was never released a single by Stax Records, later in 1978 Vogue released it as a 45 rpm. This tune was written after a breakup of the Bee Gees. “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart”, originally released by The Bee Gees, was the lead single on the Bee Gees album Trafalgar. Primarily written by Barry and Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, this song was the groups first U.S. number one hit! The song was written after a period of distance between the brothers. The writing of the song helped bring the brothers back together. Billboard ranked the track as No. 5 song for the year of 1971. Lyrically, the song is genius. Its central question about how to mend a broken heart is answered in one word never actually uttered by Robin Gibb: Love. Barry and Robin wrote the song as they were bringing the band back together after the Bee Gees had split up. It really is a song about the brothers and for the brothers but it reflects the universality of sorrow being vanquished by joy, the joy of love. This most human of truths will remain a constant as long as people live. Al Green's one and only number one hit was in 1972, Al Green went to No. 1 on the US singles chart with "Let's Stay Together," his only US chart topper.
