The thing I love about this song is: she suffers so much through the rest of "Jagged Little Pill", once this song comes round, you feel she really, REALLY deserves this moment of happiness. "I've never felt this healthy before" is such a bittersweet lyric, sweet for the present and bitter for the past.

Perfectly put, and I feel that mix of emotions (bitter/sweet, rage/peace) is what Jagged Little Pill is all about. It's even in the album name: Jagged (rough, not fun to take) Little Pill (not too big to handle, healing). Over the past few years, it's become one of my favorite albums. Of course, I heard it growing up ('97 baby here), but it resonates more now as an adult.
@ToniMcGinty
@ToniMcGinty 2 года назад
@@Potpotpotcrazy I got in on the ground floor. I was 18 when it came out, and 19 when I saw her live (with Taylor Hawkins on drums, just after a set by Foo Fighters, which he had yet to join). Even though I'm a guy, the angst was all too real to me, especially in the song "Perfect". And then, when the acoustic album came out, we had both grown up a bit, and I appreciated her new perspective. It's the same feeling I get having grown up alongside Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in the "Before" trilogy (highly recommended). As for the title, I've always taken it as entirely negative. A little pill can become a big problem if it's jagged and stuck in your throat. Like a paper cut or a stone in your shoe. But in your THROAT.

"Head Over Feet" was Morissette's 7th charted Billboard Hot 100 single peaking @ #3 for 6 weeks in 1986. Between 1995 - 2004, she charted 12 singles on the Pop chart, 5 in the Top 10. I always assumed her biggest hit was the first one, "You Oughta Know" (it did win Grammys for Rock Song & Female Rock Vocal) but it peaked @ #13. Her highest charted track was "Thank U" (peaked @ #2) and "Head Over Feet" is the ranked as her 2nd biggest hit.

I remember the first time I saw her in concert. She was performing in a club, September 1995. As the show started, they turned the lights off, then you heard the harmonica playing. When the spot lights were turned on, we saw Alanis sitting on the shoulders of her bassist, with her hair draped over her face, while playing the harmonica as they launched into "All I Really Want."

I love how the director of the video was like "OK, Alanis, just do your thing in the verses and we'll do separate takes for the chorus later". Nope lol. For a great showcase of Alanis´voice, there's "All I Really Want", which gets voice crack (or yodel?) crazy towards the end! I just happened 2 read it was written when she was n a mental hospital when it came out, hence the title, otherwise I would've thought it was just trendy b.s.! Even tho I was n2 Hardcore & Punk, this album still makes me weep like a baby!😅 I hadn't heard it n prob 10+ yrs & took some shrooms 1 night not long ago & decided 2 re-visit it. It was late night. I took a shower & walked outside n nothing but a robe & wet hair as heavy snow fell n the moonlight. I laid down on the ground & closed my eyes & disappeared, comfortably numb n ecstasy & it was even more amazing than I remembered. I never cared 4 her other stuff, but JLP 1 of the GOATS! 2 hell w/ Nirvana, this is the '90's!!! ✌😎❤

Okay, a couple more Canadian women you should check out: Sarah McLachlan (Sweet Surrender, Angel-was also on the City of Angels soundtrack with Uninvited, Possession, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy), and Nelly Furtado (I’m Like a Bird, Maneater, Say it Right). Also, definitely dig more into Alanis’ second album. She shocked and moved everyone with her first album and the rawness of her feelings. But her second album is about personal growth and exploration that she did after Jagged Little Pill came out. And a non-Canadian female you’re going to enjoy is Fiona Apple (Criminal, Fast as you Can, Shadowboxer, Paper Bag, and so much more)

I love how the song is just her face. Sometimes she is singing, sometimes not. Fun fact is that the term "friends with benefits" was introduced into the lexicon from this song.

Alanis is so good! Check her out as a judge on the show Alter Ego, she has a fun personality. For Female Friday in the future, please react to Morissette Amon--Rise Up. Thanks!

Another 90s goddess is Tori Amos. She's a piano virtuoso, and hey voice is truly haunting. Cornflake Girl or Silent All These Years would be excellent songs to start with

How raw to stand that close to the camera with no makeup on was so brave.
