Singer was a Chinese competitive show where established artists were judged by each other, the audience and the television audience. Dimash was a wildcard invited by the Chinese to take part but not expected to make it past the first two rounds. Instead he took first place in the first two rounds and went on to become runner up overall, losing to Sandy Lam by a fraction of a point. He also lost his voice before one performance but still pushed through to the complete admiration of his competitors who did everything they could to support him. This is actually a cover, as is Celine Dion's version, of the 1975 #2 hit composed / written by Eric Carmen. Just want to give credit where credit is due. Thought you'd be interested to know this. Yes the singer is a competition show in China for established performers. However dimash was invited to participate as a wild card after some of the producers had heard him sing. This is the show that catapulted him to relative stardom literally overnight. He actually placed 2nd because in 2017 the show prohibited any non-chinese performer from winning the show.

I enjoyed your reaction to Dimash, as always. Thank you for your excellent comments and responses. I do think it was a bit disrespectful to Eric Carmen, though, when you introduced the song as "All By Myself" by Celine Dion! Since Carmen wrote the lyrics, recorded the original version and took it to a higher position on the charts than anyone else who covered it later (in Celine's case, 22 years later), it's simply a matter of credit where credit is due. Music industry people are quite sensitive about this and I would think Carmen would have a right to be a bit offended that the blood, sweat and tears he poured into creating this pop music masterpiece is being credited to someone else.

He does a killer cover of My Heart Will Go On also. It was done for a film festival but if you want to see some of his best, do some of his Kazakh stuff as well. Kieli Meken, Durdaraz are two of my favorites and have rock vibes.

This song is not by Celine Dion. Celine Dion had a hit with her histrionic cover of a song that was written and originally performed by Eric Carmen, who in turn borrowed music from Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto. I admire and enjoy Dimash's music hugely, but this arrangement was a travesty of the original, and the masterpiece that inspired it. Celine Dion must take some of the blame for his cadenza, which has sweet fuck all to do with the emotional content of the song. With great talent goes great responsibility, and this was not his proudest moment. Thankfully for Dimash, such horrible lapses in musical taste seem to be a thing of the past.
