Amy died from alcohol poisoning at the age of 27. Amy did go to rehab but relapsed. As someone who is an alcoholic and been to rehab, this song breaks my heart. Untreated addiction ends 1 of 3 ways. Institutions, Jail, & Death. She ended up in an institution - but after relapse & not trying again, her addiction killed her. I've seen it all too often around me. Grateful for being many years recovered now yet I have one day at a time. RIP Amy ❤🙏🏻 If you suffer from addiction, please get help. Personally, AA saved my life.
Beautifully said. Too many dying, too many in jails. Please seek help. There are many avenues available to help. God Bless to you all. You are in my prayers.
Honestly there's a point in ur life where u dgaf. Like ur cool with it not depressed but not happy like who cares. What's the worst that can happen... U die. Not caring is freedom tbh.
“I’d rather be at home with Ray(Charles). There’s nothing you can teach me that I can’t learn from Mr.(Donny) Hathaway.” Two of her musical influences…
Not Ray Charles she ment Ray Fenderline her exhusband who was a terrible crack and heroin addict .she said said she would only goto rehab if he went with her
Please react to Amy singing "Love is a Losing Game." It's about her doomed relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil(He was the reason that she wrote "Back to Black.") and he's shown in the video with her.....You can hear both the pain and the beauty of Amy's voice in that song more than anything else that she sung.
It's a true story, her Dad said she was fine & didn't need to go. Soon enough he realised he was so wrong. Meeting her husband (ex) was her biggest downfall. His name is tattooed above her heart. Listen to Back to Black 😔 RIP Amy, what a loss to the entire world 😪
@@michellebrodeur3880 yeah, she said so herself in an interview. Everyone wanted her to go & she was really close with her dad and he said "no, you're fine" 😔
This originally started as a joke between Amy and mark ronson, she sang it as a little jingle whilst walking through New York and mark suggested they make a song out of it, which she loved the idea of. Sadly Amy did go to rehab, but later relapsed. She was clean from alcohol for some time, then one night she drank a LOT and it was too much for her body to cope with as she’d been sober for a while. RIP amy!! ♥️
After watching the documentary “Amy” I almost can’t listen to the song anymore. “And if my Daddy thinks I’m fine”. Her Dad was a leach, and actually did put cold water on her going to rehab when she was at a crisis point.
They talk about this song a lot in the documentary. There was a really sad scene when Amy was clean and well in St Lucia after a really difficult time in her life and then her Dad turned up out of the blue with a camera crew for a reality TV show.
Her ability to make everyday events sound like a Motown hit is unparalleled! She was such a Legend! Burned too bright like Kurt and Jimmy then died the same age!
Some people have too much talent, too much soul and too much raw emotion for this world. I'm always so blown away by how her life and career were so similar to Janis Joplin. Two MAGNIFICENT talents who were too much for this world.
I always said the same thing! There's so much similarities in their lives and how they died and they were even the same age. Even musically, their styles were unusual for white girls to be doing at those times. They both paved way for a lot of female blue-eyed soul singers to make it big.
“You know Im no good” “Take the box” “Love is a losing game” “What is it about men” “Wake up alone” and “In my bed” are all must heard as well as many others. I loved Amy from the first time I heard her and I could just turn on her albums and let them play all they way through. Such a talented and beautiful woman and very missed.
”Frank” was unpolished, but sparkling. In ”Back to Black” her voice worked really well with the sound, and the album is cohesive, but her suffering made it difficult for me enjoying the album. ”Love is a losing game” is my favourite track by her, I think she uses her voice very well in it. ❤️ From ”Frank” I like ”You sent me flying” most. It’s so sad that she didn’t get the opportunity to evolve.
Amy was and still is a legend. Her story is so sad, you really need to watch the documentary film about her life, simply called Amy. She really needed friends who could pull her away from her husband and father who exploited her and introduced her to drugs and should have seen what was going on. Just like Freddie Mercury I don't think there'll ever be another Any Winehouse, she's one of a kind. There's a reason they put a statue of her in Camden Market, London where she lived and was often seen. They don't do this for just anyone!!! I just wish someone good could have been there for her, that's what she really needed to pull her out of the drugs and life and was into. I dread to think how big she would be now if that had happened, bigger than Adele I think. RIP Amy!!! You are very much missed and still in our hearts!!! ♥️
She was amazing. Once you get past the groovy beat, the sax, the drums, and the guy clapping his hands.....you hear the words and can relate. The pajamas the guys are all wearing in the video is cool too. Love her voice so much!
Whenever you watch a documentary or read about her, the common factor is the old man- arguably more so than the husband, who was basically a co-dependent lost soul. There was one about her on the TV last night, which said that her life started to unravel with the death of her grandmother who was her main stabilising influence.
Indeed- I get the impression that her dad made a mint out his daughter's life and death. He was hardly off the TV after Amy's death, playing the grief card, when I believe that HE was the problem.
@@rubypickles1836 I believe in the documentary it was her record company/manager that was pushing for her to seek professional help. Her life seemed so sad.
She needed to LIVE in rehab and record her albums from there. And to not be allowed to see any of the enablers she had in her life telling her it was fine.
Agree, Valerie is my favourite of hers. Mr Ronson is so talented and the two of them were a dynamite combo. He brings out the best in so many artists with his production.
@@Frank75288 I actually really like both, they sound very different. But it is a matter of taste and the Zutons wrote and sang a great song (well more than one.....). Get that they kinda get overlooked though because of this version.
@@EchoBravo370 her dad said she didnt need it, and was pushing her to go out and earn money - her manager too I think if she'd had the right support she'd still be here now - and yes i 'm sure she loved drugs but knowing you're going to die at 27 might temper that
We didn't let her go, we pushed her over the edge, at least our obsession with her which fed the paparazzi onslaught did and made her life a prison which she had neither the tools nor the support to deal with, causing her to escape to bad relationships and drugs. I see a certain parallel between what happened to Amy and what's going on right now with Britney Spears, and it's frightening how both lack of support and over zealous support can destroy a person's life. In the end we are all responsible for our own success or failure but well (or not so well) meaning supporters can be as destructive as haters. R. I. P Amy
Was listening to Amy, Adele, Sade and Nora Jones yesterday and it made me realise that Amy, as far as I am concerned, had the best voice, after all Tony Bennett wouldn"t sing with just anyone. What a tragedy, waste and loss to all of us. To that person who introduced her to drugs, what can I say!
Tony Bennett has sung with an enormous number of singers. That is not a reason to love Amy’s voice. Just have your own opinion and stand up for it, don’t qualify it.
Often overlooked in comments about her is the fact that she had a truly awesome set of players in her band. Very tight, very cool. Great R & B crew for sure.
I will never forget the day she died, i was like 11 or 12 and I didnt knew her but my parents did and they were very sad. idk why but thats a day that I will never forget
Amy was and always will be unique. That voice. Her effortless talent. The real pain in her songs. She left us way too soon but her body of work is and always will be remembered. I absolutely love “Valerie” and “Love is a losing game”. And you are right Jovaughn that sound on that track was epic. RIP Amy ❤️
"Love is a losing game" is my favorite Amy song, but all her songs are superb. She was born in the wrong generation definitely, probably the biggest talent of the 21th century so far.
Think it was heart failure due to getting drunk. She had already been told by the doctor one more drink could kill you. Really sad. Such an unreal talent. She was planning a reggae album that never happened although She did do the cover of monkey man which is 👌👌👌
"It seems like she's not even trying too much"... That completely nails it. I haven't noticed before, but this is indeed one of the major points why this song is working so well.
Amy was unique in every way. She was a gift to us all. I'm still heart broken over her death. If you want to hear a devastatingly beautiful song by her, listen to Love Is A Losing Game. I think it is her best work. She was even sick when she recorded it, but it is perfect. It draws out her raw talent, her amazing voice, and her precious vulnerability.
She was teased about her look with the beehive hairstyle, which I loved. It was different and her jazz influence was a refreshing change to the industry at the time. You know you're good when Nas features you in a song. Check it out Nas ft. Amy Winehouse , "Cherry Wine".
This was my first introduction to her.....the sound, the style, made me feel nostalgic yet it's so fresh!!! Her voice was one in a million, for true! Such a tragic loss.
As soon as I heard this song on the radio, I knew I had to get the CD. Amy Winehouse. A great voice, great interpretive skill and just a great presence. It’s just sad that she and those around her couldn’t figure out a way to get her strong and help her stay strong to overcome the “demons“ in her life. RIP ✌️💜
Exceptionally talented Artist. Wrote her own songs, knew how she wanted them to sound, didn't care about putting up a front and was just being her self. I remember in one interview she was like :I'm just a musician. Lovely video! If a song makes us do the face... It's a damn good song. ❤️🙏🏻
Everyone in a while there comes a singer with so much talent and heart. Amy is a legend. Gone way too soon xxx She paved the way for singers of this era including Adele, etc. She was a true artist. Produced by Mark Ronson with the Dap-kings. Check out more Amy please. Also Sharon Jones and the Dap-kings too. Gone too soon.
"Yes, I've been black" is a British expression for "Yes, I've been drunk". The line therefore doesn't have a lot to do with Amy's other song that you mentioned "Back to black". Also, "Rehab" was released prior to "Back to black". I like very much your commenting in general! You manage so well to highlight all those different implications by music, lyrics and the artists' biographies and to bring these together into one concise interpretation. And: you seem to not be ashamed of showing your compassion when it comes to tragedies or heavy topics. Thumbs up 👍!
There is a performer in California named Frankie Jordan. She sings as herself with her own band but also performs songs dressed as Amy Winehouse. It is astonishing how much she looks and sounds like her. facebook.com/dearamyband
I was away for respite in Grenada and had this as my ringtone. Everytime the phone rang people would stop and listen and demand I play it again. That made me laugh. In my darkest times, in a lot of pain, my mother would say "Put on Amy" and I had some peace and could smile again. My mother and that little girl saved my life. Miss you both always. ❤
When she says "Yes, I've been black.", my understanding is that she's talking about an alcoholic blackout. And yes, her daddy thought she was just fine as long as she was making money for him. I have a hard time listening to this one since she died. I wish she had had someone looking out for her that she trusted and would listen to . Who knows, she might still be with us today. How great would that be?
OMG you´ve got to listen to and watch "Body and Soul", her duet with Tony Bennett. ESPECIALLY before or after her a capella version of "Valerie" (video on a sofa chair)!!!
I assure you that you have never heard anything like it among the voices. Diana Ankudinova's voice goes straight to the soul. Among the reactionaries, Diana has long earned the title of queen of goosebumps. Fallen in love with her humanity, her soul, her voice, her personality, her talent, humor, intelligence, courage, ... ❤️ Recommend making reactions to Wicked Game, Its Man's Man's Man's World and other
YES...Yes SIR!! GREAT SONG! It broke me when she passed cuz it was like I FINALLY connected with someone who knew EXACTLY what I was going through and then she was just...GONE! She was my "friend" without knowing. No other artist has hit me the way she did and still does
Amy had an AMAZING voice. Did duets with the Great Tony Bennett. Something about folks in the U.K., they do the BEST Blue Eyed Soul and Funk. I'm a Philly girl, where the Philadelphia Sound grew from, and some pretty good Blue Eyed Soul came out of. But, DANG, the U.K. beats American Blue Eyed Soul, hands down! Sadly, Amy died of alcohol poisoning, which makes THIS song particularly painful to hear. She's one of the latest musicians to join the 27 Club.
Bad Kitty, have you ever heard of The Commitments? If not, you have to check them out! Btw, I'm from Camden NJ, born and raised. However, I joined the Air Force and lived in the UK and Europe during the 80s and 90s.
@@abmqa When I think of The Commitments, I think of a movie about a Bluesy Rock like band in the U.K., trying to get a break. Am I right? I've got memory issues, long story, not drugs or alcohol, so, I can't remember if I've seen it but, my brain keeps showing me a movie scene. Please let me know because, NOW I need to look that bad boy up, lol!
@@badkitty4922 Absolutely correct! The movie is awesome, a 16 year Andrew Strong is the lead singer and is incredible. Every song on the album is good. Especially Mustang Sally and Dark End Of The Street. Try a Little Tenderness and Chain of Fools. Destination Anywhere and Do Right Woman Do Right Man....gawd I forgot how good this album is! Listening to it now 😍😍👍👍😍🤩🤩💥💥
@@abmqa oh wow! Such wonderful, classic R &B, Bluesy, Rockin' songs, too! I don't know where you live but, have you heard of Robert Palmer (RIP)? Addicted To Love/ Simply Irresistible/ Didn't Mean To Turn You On singer. In his earlier career, he sang some amazing Blues and Funk. He was English so, yeah, Blue Eyed Soul. He also did a few covers, and although I usually HATE cover songs, Mr Palmer BROUGHT IT, if you know what I mean. Thanks, friend, for confirming what I was seeing in my mind's eye. I definitely gotta see if I can find and watch The Commitments!💖😘👍 ETA: of those 3 songs I first mentioned, Robert Palmer's Didn't Mean To Turn You On is my favorite.👍
@@badkitty4922 yes I was living in the UK during most of the 80s. The music in the UK during the 80s was off the hook 🪝😁😃😃. Robert Palmer was huge. Now I'm living in New Jersey, Sicklerville. I'm like 30 minutes away from AC
Amy attended the same Stage School (IE Performing Arts High School) with Adele & Jessi J. When she died at 27 she joined a list of folks who died at 27. Her, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Curt Kobain of Nirvana.
Amy was such an incredible talent; the production you're hearing is Mark Ronson producing and The Dap-Kings, Sharon Jones' backing band, with the classic R&B sounds. Remarkable album.
As always Javon, You got it! She died tragically of alcohol poisoning in 2011. There is an excellent documentary called, "Amy" (directed by Asif Kapedia), a really nice guy I met at the premiere in LA (at the Grammy Museum). Her dad was actually a POS that exploited her and her bf was the same. She was extraordinary but had no one to turn to. An AMAZING artist. Gone too soon.
R.I.P Amy. Gone way too soon. She was so soulful and deep. It was a sad situation, though. She performed "Valerie" while she was in the middle of trying to get treatment. I recommend that song for a reaction if you haven't heard it already. Just her and a guitar player sitting down together. You could tell she was tweaking some, but oh what a pained beautiful soul. She deserved more out of life. It breaks my heart for her to know she lost her fight with her sickness...at such a young age at that.
I'm extremely saddened by the fact that we will never be getting new music from Amy. Perhaps if she'd gone to rehab and truly got her life together she'd still be with us. Just think about what could have been. She has left us with a great music legacy though. RIP Amy.😢
The band playing with her is The Dap-Kings, who used to play with Sharon Jones before she sadly passed away too (RIP to Sharon and Amy). I’d suggest checking out Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings’ 100 Days, 100 Nights or their cover of Janet Jackson’s What Have You Done For Me Lately to hear them in their element.
You should check out the documentary called Amy on Netflix. I highly recommend it. Its very sad seeing her life spiral and we lost a rare talent. She didn't want the fame but the industry wanted her & she couldn't escape it
Take the box is one of my favorites by Amy Whinehouse. But, I love all of her songs. I think she said Dinah Washington is one of her faves which is where I think some of the raspy voice influence comes from. A lot of jazz and blues singers used that technique. Lol! The innocence! When she was talking about when she went black and came back, I’m pretty sure she was talking about blacking out from the alcohol/drugs and coming back from unconsciousness.
Two more Amy Winehouse videos worth watching (although they're all worth watching) are Amy WInehouse and Paul Weller singing Don't Go To Strangers on the Jools Holland show and Amy Winehouse and Tony Bennett singing Body & Soul. Her voice is just sublime.
Hello, thank you for the video. I would like to see your reaction to the performances of Diana Ankudinova. This is a young singer, she has covers of famous songs, as well as her own songs.
She referred color black to DEPRESSION after coming back from rehab!!!! ♥♥ But ya got the rest of it rite on it was over her man a toxic rel......she doesn't disappoint her music writing truly a rare gem!!!
I remember watching and loving this video and "you know i'm no good' while in London (Dec 2006.) I came home to the US singing her songs but nobody here knew her music yet. I was so excited when she finally crossed over to the US and they started playing her music.
I remembered when this song came out, is was living in London and I went crazy about her. I cried for days when she passed away. Check her songs (life is a losing game, back to black and Valerie).
There is a video, some where, where she sings this live without music, it will knock your socks off. The message you gave at the end, your'e a gentleman.
